    I played Harry as truly repentant of his past and tried to stay sober. But needed to get drunk to help through a skill check and the guilt I felt when Kim found out I was drunk hurt on a deep level. Never has a game made me feel actual depression from the character I was playing

    I think there is something to be applauded in those 'reviewers' who decided to play a narrative-driven CRPG game and publicly complain about having to read too many words. Imagine having the self-confidence to write such things and post them online for everyone else to see. That takes a lot proverbial balls! These people... Just... Wow.

      To be fair there are definitely a lot of games both eastern and western that are so wordy yet say absolutely nothing of substance. However, Disco Elysium is definitely not one of them, I’m excited for the expanded edition existing owners are getting as a free update.

      The fact that you're forced into one extreme political view VS another kind of took me out of it, since I didn't feel like any of the responses they offered me with regards to either ideology was something I would've bought into. You're generally shoehorned into being either a militant communist or an amoral capitalist, and then as Grimbeard mentioned, the game kind of makes fun of you for falling into either extreme, despite not really giving you another option besides complete indifference.

    • @TummyRubz
      @TummyRubz ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@KyokujiFGC Either? There's 3 others you haven't mentioned, including a 'militant centrist'. They do make fun of you for any choice but I saw that as a comment on the character's current mindset and desperation to escape his pain by following ideology down to it's extreme conclusions. Is making fun of us playing a downside? I loved that about it.

    I gotta do this for all the dyslexic people: sorry Grim Beard, but your opinion on whether or not it should have voice acting is factually incorrect.
    I haven't and will likely never play Disco E. because my dyslexia type makes reading legitimately physically painful, and time consuming. What might take you 10 seconds to read takes me 17+, which means that since time only progresses in dialogue, I'm permanently, in every playthrough, disadvantaged. Not to mention the anxiety that comes with that.
    While I may agree it shouldn't be required to be on, it should be an option, because having to use OCRs(on screen readers) for every moment of the game is honestly unplayable? Dyslexia exists and voice acting is literally its accessible option. Without audible, I would not read books. It's as simple as that.
    It's not an artistic thing, it's access. Love your stuff tho!
    Also while mods may exist that connect ocr into games, not every game has a modding scene, or have these mods.

    I actually really liked how you had such a differing opinion of Evrart from me. Where you see a guy getting shit done, I see senseless power grabbing. Where you see a guy guaranteeing benefits for his people, I see a guy strangeholding an entire neighborhood for the wealth of his personal clique. Where you see a guy who is open-handed and kind, I see a sneering manipulator who gives favors with the expectation of big returns. I don't think you're wrong in your assumption of Evrart, I think he's very noble in some areas, but the fact that you came to such a different conclusion from me about him while still going through the critical thinking to prove your statements about his character as logically strong speaks to the depth of the games writing and why its so much better than pretty much every game story on the market.

      Nothing about Disco is supposed to focus on combat, that's why there is none. I bet putting it in the game was never in their plans. There are physical checks, sure, and one 'fight' i'm aware of, but as you know the "builds" are actually the character's psyche, their entire psychological atributes and some of them are kinda characters themselves, talking to you and arguing with each other over what course of action you want to do next. It's totally a case of apples vs bananas but to me that concept alone is a thousand times more interesting than any kind of rpg builds. I hope this team makes more games like this, building up from that same idea.

    • @leftovernoise
      @leftovernoise 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@tabernaclejones6115 I feel like combat would have ruined this game. The story has nothing to do with combat. I feel like them caving to people wanting combat would have made the game they set out to make, less effective at achieving their artistic goals for the project. There are thousands of games you can go play if you want combat. But there are very, very few games like disco elysium.

    • @TayTayMakesBeats
      @TayTayMakesBeats 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      If there was a combat system it would most likely be pretty basic and not particularly satisfying. It'd also necessitate an already small team to take a bunch of resources away from the main focus of their game. One of the only complaints I hear about Planescape is the combat. I've haven't played it yet but I assume from what I've heard that it might have been better off ditching the it entirely. Even if it turns a lot of people off of the game some experiences are best without certain systems. It"s like putting long ass dialogue trees in a Call of Duty campaign.

    One point I like about the "ex-wife" part of the story in the game - there is a certain inclination that it might not be all self-indulgent phantasy of the main character. There are certain tidbits dropped about the Goddess character is viewing his ex as actually having an equally omnipotent husband. Husband that we learn much less about, yet that shares certain characteristics with our quite unfortunate protagonist. So there is definitely that implication that this whole dream sequence at the end is merely a figment of imagination, version protagonist wants to believe. After all, we can call the ex through quite real landline and have a proper nothing-out-of-ordinary awkward dialogue about past relations. But there still lingers that small possibility that there is a lot more to this. Especially if you put together some of the more provocative scenes, like having the dialogue with the embodiment of the City itself due to dancing too hard in the Church. City pointing out that protagonist's role is quite a lot bigger in the whole story, past and future, than he would like it to be.

    Here from current day
    The Final Cut is a fantastic experience and all the voices add so much to the game. There's something to be said for experiencing some of it in silence but IMO that gets vastly outweighed by the wonderful performance pretty much every VA gives, and being able to rely on your ears over pure reading I'd imagine makes it more accessible by people who are less a fan of books.
    The one thing I'd add is don't be afraid to save-scum one or twice. DO NOT do it constantly, failure is 100% part of the experience, but if you've exhausted every other avenue and feel you're actually stuck don't feel bad. The game will just be happy it keeps being played.

But that's to be celebrated, and I understand that some people won't like the ideas or simply the amount of reading to be done, but the fact that they're not willing to engage with the ideas or the amount of reading already tells me a lot about who they are.
    I've personally never felt so many emotions while playing a game, it has been a journey and a much more memorable experience than 99 % of what I've played.
    Great review.

    I don't get all the hubbub about this game. My version didn't look or play anything like shown here in the video so it's pretty weird. I put in about 10 hours and just couldn't look a blank display any longer. Terrible graphics and gameplay, game wouldn't run on my high-powered shoebox monitor. My actual PC is made outta leaves. My rig is biodegradable and 100% recyclable! It's fed rich nutrients thought it's root tubes. This baby is fully grounded! Most games seem to play just like this one, though, so maybe video games just aren't my thing.

    I was a play tester for the post released version of this game. Interestingly, there were not much issues with it, it is a solid piece of engineering. Honestly i found it hard to do my job properly. Once you get into the story, you get really lost and stuck in the world so i was more playing it in full details in order to check the "localisation and audio" then anything else XD It gave me real emotions, that sucked and is not a normal occurrence for me, but i figured that is what the devs wanted... ;) Reptilian brain guy has one of the most awesome voices i have ever seen. Anyways, i stalked around and hid the body in the fridge. Then i played the game and kicked a racist in his stupid head... I can understand why some people find it boring, i personally don't like games without active combat and probably would not have given it a chance if it was not my job at a time. It is a good thing i was kind of obligated into it and i think it is one of the warmest and most private and sad stories ever told. On the other hand, i am a Slav and we love our comedic depression simulators! XD

      For too long games have tried to emulate films as if the movies are the pinnacle of artistic expression. Games, gamers and gaming have always had this inferiority complex regarding the medium.
      But, as it turned out, games-as-movies wound up ploughing the same shitty field as cinema...money above all else, lowest common denominator, throw-away content.
      Games-as-literature seem to work out better.
      Sure, they don't make millions, they get shit on by gamers who think gaming is a dexterous activity which starts and ends at the fingers.
      But for some of us, games like this mean more than a good K/D ever will, because the things we feel and learn are applicable outside of gaming, in the real world, inside ourselves.
      I discussed my experience of this game with other people online and none of them called me a faggot, or attempted to apply a gross misreading of darwinism to my existence.
      It was refreshing.
      I realised that I'm done with paying a hundred dollars just for the experience of killing imaginary people, while a maladjusted twelve year old threatens to rape my family via chat.
      The little fucker didn't even elaborate when I questioned his proposed method. He just said he had a roadmap.
      All that hype, and nothing happened.
      I've been gaming for 30 years, been literate for slightly longer. This game affected me as if it were a woman.
      I still think about it, two years after I last played. And when I reflect on it, I cant help but reflect on myself.
      It's really rather good

    • @rexrip1080

      @@carlpotter1926 That last part of your reply got me, not gonna lie! I am generally chill so things don't really get to me but this one hurt. It is weird how the game translates well to match the players personality, I felt shame when fucking up and sadness at the end. I generally cared for some characters, even to the point of save scuming, just to keep them safe. Honestly, I love single player games (and rarely play mp) but if it was not mu job, I would probably never have tried Disco. After playtesting it for a month I started looking for more games like it (that is more open RPGs...). I still like survival games more but I played a bunch or RPGs as well. Also, a road map to fucking your family is comedy gold XD

    • @carlpotter1926
      @carlpotter1926 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rexrip1080 I am jealous that you were so closely involved with the game. Play testers generally get treated badly, especially by AAA producers, but I hope your experience was different.
      As for the joke I made...I was doing my usual thing of trying to be funny because I felt I'd made myself vulnerable with the rest of my comment. Weird how making people laugh is a gentle form of coercion.
      The fact that you, and the devs are slavic is way more pertinent than it first seems, I think.
      People criticize the game for being nihilistic or depressing, or too 'socialist'. But I think it's easy in America and Western Europe to forget that the slavs have lived through and survived the ideologies which were thrust upon them. You've watched your ideologies die, ours just got better at lying to us and we cling to it because we have literally no alternative ideas.
      Nihilism isn't the disappearance of ideology, it is the reappearance of humanity.
      Honestly, the last time I felt so affected by artistic creation was when I first read Dostoevsky.
      And it took me two attempts to play the game before I could do it honestly, without doing what I thought the game wanted.
      I'd stop playing, go to work, and then have an argument in my head with something a character had said to me three hours earlier. Then I'd rush home after work to 'get closure', as the Americans say.
      The fact that a game can do this, and the fact that so many people have similar experiences is beautiful to me, even as it exposes so much of my reality as a fraud...I am not a unique and special individual, who deserves everything and who's pain, love and reality is much more painful, lovely and real than anyone else's.
      What I'm saying in my usual self- indulgent way, is that I felt different after playing and engaging with other people who played. No longer certain of myself, but also no longer alone in my certainty.
      You apparently played a part in helping me feel that, so I thank you. Genuinely.

    • @rexrip1080
      @rexrip1080 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@carlpotter1926 We worked with some AAA companies but there were a lot of indie companies as well, it was a balanced diet. The pay was shit but the office and interactions with devs were generally stellar so I can't say I had any of the typical problems that you see reported on. Most of the devs were good people and treated us well. Ubi people were dicks... I am a level designer and I just skip them when I am looking for work...
      I think being Slavic only helped because most of our media is a combo of comedy and tragedy so the theme of the game got me good. If you look at a few of our movies (both Balkans, Ukraine and Russia), you will see the same pattern: Someone is doing something funny and then they die of tuberculosis or something like that. Then its happy and then someone dies again XD
      Also, if you have not tried, play the game with high Shivers. Take Visual calculator as secondary. Then walk the streets and see the past, present and future! Also save spam to kick a racist in the face, I once got lucky and got a crit on a first try on really small physical instrument skill, guess my actual will to kick him translated to the game XD
      The game changes everyone I think, it makes you feel warm and then hits you over the head with a club like a baby seal. It made me not trust people! Also to take mushrooms so I can do a shivers build irl XD
      All kidding aside, this talk kind of hyped me up, it's time to replay the game again. It is nice to remember some of the fan parts of working that job as well. Thanks man!

      I've seen a few, but they were either modern 'shock ' films ie. Nightwatch/
      Daywatch, Serbian film etc or old artistic films like Solaris or Battleship Potemkin.
      To be candid, my interest in Slavic art stems from a relationship with a Ukrainian girl and my inability to connect with her on a soulful level.
      She once told me that smiling made me look like I was 'mentally deficient'.
      Since then, I've wondered how the slavic mind works.
      In the 'West', we easily judge reality through ideology.for you guys, ex Soviet, post-glasnost etc, ideology must seem absurd.
      I dont wish to suck at your brain, so I will leave you in peace.
      But I feel good about connecting and talking to you, whoever you are. And I will think about your words and treat them with reverence.
      Just know that, in our small communication, I felt a feeling of value, of talking to a person.
      I wish you well, I hope you keep doing things that send a wave around the world.

    disco elysium was a beautiful thing released at the perfect time that cannot be replicated due to the path of the industry and culture that moves more and more pass the cooments you read
    in one playthought i discover if you play a racist you discover lena worst secrets and in other i contacted an airship, theres so much secrets if you play different skills and accept the randomness of events, if you reload and succed in all you block from events that unlock if you fail certain things.
    that acceptabce of chaos and still going on made me realize of one of the song harry listens to "life gets hard but we go ooon" and that stuck with me thats in part the message of the game and i found more symbols of it, thanks for the video i will now ramble avoid all the meaning i found
    the description of innocences is the best mocking of both religious and enligthment figures since that rethoric of the great man is trashed when is put before the "they only accelerated things that would had happened anyway" not for nothing dolores had the lungs of fire as depiction since the lungs is what process the source of life, air, but they don't produce it, in the same way that she was imposing the rules of life, of the new order, the fundamentals of the moralitmen that rule the world with her civilizacing and the fire of her armies, regulating it but not being able to define it to their pleasure. is not coincidence that the phasmid is on martinese and on the island that as joyce mentions doesn't had bloodshed during the conquest because there was no man there, in other words, was never civilized, and on the specific archipelago were the soldiers never accepted defeat.
    The event on the island with the phasmid and the real last communist not being able to see it has for me different symbolism, him clearly blinded by hate and ideology at the past to the point of repeating several times that he is an ideological officer, his position is due to the injustices and the cruel reality of the world after "history ended", that supression of colective will that he could not retaliate against drove him to the point of not having joy or being able to let others have joy like his hate for the girl enjoying with the merc or the brothers for not changing things immediately even if they clearly had the strike plan for years in the making to expropriate the port. in the exact moment when you are forced to see what appears a depressing description of a permanent reality by him you see the phasmid, a magical moment that shouldn't exist, a proof that surprises still occur that his analysis is fault that "life gets hard but we go oonnn, baby" a proof of the wonders of life that can still be experienced no matter how fucked it is, or put in philosophical terms harry faces the Nietzschean last man in that last communist living by choice alone, in hate, exile and misery.
    harry with his lost memory, is like the phasmids, doesn't have a reason for hate, he is able to experience the world without the bonds of morality, of history or shame he experiences joy and anger, experimentation and defeat until ot completes the journey to become the übermensch when he manages to talk to the phasmid, other being with similar conditions to harry current life, that event with him only being able to talk to the creature since kim can't listen the conversation for me was a methapor that one needs to let behind the past and the hate its consequences cause and act with joy, only that way one can overcome everything no matter from what side it comes, is not coincidence that those like mañana and gaston who are the most joyful and non align but neither centrist figures share the same technic and lighting in their portrait paintings that the phasmid does.
    the message was clear that we need to move on, to embrace life and to find new ways to struggle and face the injustices of moralitmen because otherwise we end like that deserster on the island.,Another proof of this is that if you directly antagonize joyce with mazovian rethoric and not help evart because you consider him a revisionist you miss the only path to convince joyce to surrender the port to the workers union, if one gets fixated on the past and rescenment one loses the opportunity for the future, to avoid what will be a losing war against the company and help the workers. the conditions for change are always there because life is change itself, but that movement for change cannot be any of the ideas of the past, none of them had the might necessary to defeat the moralitmen airships or artillery in past and they have far less now, it also cannot be inaction. it needs to be what harry becomes when it loses his identity, past, memory, moralism and experiences, life without preconceived ideas, with childlike wonder. a new kind of man. a übermench
