About SUN-AIR of Scandinavia (from Wikipedia):
SUN-AIR of Scandinavia A/S, usually shortened to SUN-AIR, is a Danish regional airline headquartered in Billund, with its main base at Billund Airport. It operates scheduled services as a franchise of British Airways using their name and corporate design as British Airways - operated by SUN-AIR of Scandinavia A/S. The airline also offers charter flights, air taxi services, specialist aerial work and aircraft brokerage services.
About Fairchild-Dornier 328JET (from Wikipedia):
The Fairchild-Dornier 328JET is a commuter airliner, based upon the turboprop-powered Dornier 328, developed by the German aircraft manufacturer Dornier Luftfahrt GmbH. It would be the last Dornier-designed aircraft to reach production before the company's collapse during the early 2000s.
The 328JET was designed by Dornier in response to negative feedback from some customers on the marketability of turboprops against the more appealing turbofan engine. It was a relatively straightforward re-engining of the existing 328, being originally designated as the 328-300 prior to being rebranded as the 328JET. During 1996, early on in the programme, the financially distressed Dornier company was acquired by the American aerospace firm Fairchild Aircraft; the resulting corporation, named Fairchild Dornier, continued development of the 328JET. On 20 January 1998, the first 328JET prototype conducted its maiden flight.

Danish person here: Billund Airport serves more than half of the danish population. Copenhagen airport is far away from most of the country, so Billund is much closer. It is indeed in a small town, but serves as an airport for multiple of the biggest cities in Denmark. ✌🏼
That makes sense!
A similar situation applies to Atlanta's airport - there's no system of airports like there is in LA and London so it's a major reason why that airport is the world's busiest in terms of passenger traffic.
danish people very friendly and world grateful for carlsberg
Billund is a small town but it has a noticeably large employer. Toys of some sort.
I love small towns!
Big towns tend to be a mess
It’s a privately owned franchise company of British Airways, called Sun-Air of Scandinavia. Started my career in that company and have about 2000 hrs on this nice little Aircraft. And same on the prop version
How cool!
@@NonstopDanVlogsI mistook that Dornier aircraft for a BAE-146
@@michaeljohndennis2231 Didn't count the engines, huh?
@@michaeljohndennis2231 BAe-146 has 4 engines and an aero part under the rear fuselage.
@@NonstopDanVlogs Sun-Air is a company from denmark and main hub is in billund airport which is also my main travel airport as a person from aarhus denmark
I flew this airplane for Midwest Connect out of General Mitchel in Milwaukee. Our customers loved this aircraft. We even had an oven on board and baked chocolate chip cookies for the passengers. What a great memory!
Aah, a straight wing jet with deicer boots!
The Dornier 328 jet is also used as a Business jet . Flew that to the Masters one year. Nice plane.
Deicer boots painted silver to look like a hot wing lol🤣.
Worked for ME out of PHL 2000-2001… such a neat airline with great memories! Flew on that AC several times… neat AC!
@@stuartzeigler331 Totally agree!!
If a jet can be referred to as "cute", then this plane deserves that appellation. 😊
I've taken the London City to Billund route on this plane. Actually it was a business trip to visit Sun Air as we supplied them with a piece of software to manage servicing and parts of their planes. We were on standby and ran out of spaces by one, but the owner of Sun Air was actually flying that flight and recognised my colleague so allowed him to fly in the jump seat
hah! thats funny ive done that route aswell
Don't try to fool us - you went to buy Lego ! 😀
I used to fly for Nordic European and Deutsche BA out of Cologne and Düsseldorf (as you can tell, a long time ago! ) and at times we had crew transfers to other domestic airports on the Dornier and I LOVED it! It felt really special! So lovely to see it in your vlog!
Private Wings(Germany) also operates the Dornier 328. The Turbofan and the Prop....😊
I flew this aircraft for 2 years and it was a huge favorurite for us pilots. TOGA To Ten because of the the off thrust. Just great memories!
Please do more of these vlogs! It was a really fun video to watch!
Loved having Oscar provide his direct commentary in this video!!❤❤
I sure miss flying Sun Air. Keep hoping they will re-open the OsloBillund route, but it doesn't look like that will happen. Always enjoyed that small airplane, not to mention the impeccable service on board.
Cool video. I flew on a 328 from Chicago to Albany, NY, about 20 years ago. The passenger load was light and they made us move around for weight and balance. But it was a beautiful day, and that high wing gives every window seat a fantastic view.
I'm flying on this aircraft from London City to Billund and then to Manchester next month, I can't wait for it! Fantastic video!
I flew those from Manchester to Billund a few years back it was nice to have a window into the cockpit.
Billund is a lovely airport too.
I used to work this aircraft ( the DO-328 Jet) as a Flight Attendant with Atlantic Coast Airlines, dba Delta Connection, out of our CVG and BOS hubs. Loved working it, with the galley and lav in the back and decent headroom. Thanks for the memories! :)
I used to work MX on these in BOS for ACA. The one in this video was formerly one of ours N426FJ, so you may have flown on this very one :)
Used the fly the BAE 146 many times on the commute from London to Zurich and back - this reminds me so much of that aircraft.
I flew on this plane in China on a flight from Xi'an to Yinchuan circa 2005. I believe it was Hainan Airlines. We probably flew into windshear right after take-off. The sinking feeling lasted many more seconds than one would like so close to the ground! I like that jet more than the EMB-145.
We have SAAB 350 (REX Airlines) and Dash 8s (Qantas Link) aircraft, with the same seating configuration , which fly between our regional Australian airport and the major cities. I’ve clocked up,1000s of air miles in them with work trips, medical trips and heading to the city for international connections.
We flew the Dornier from Denver to Roswell, NM a while back on Denver Air Connection (Key Lime Air). Service was amazing for a short flight. Can't wait to do it again. Oh, and great video as always!
Dornier 328 would be perfect for London City Airport...it reminds me of the BAE 146 that used to operate from LCY.
The 328Jet (DoJet) is a lovely aircraft, grossly overpowered for the size making its performance phenomenal. It was already a great aircraft as a prop. I flew on one back in the early 2000s between Boston and JFK when it flew for Delta Connection operated by ACJet (part of Atlantic Coast Airlines) who had a substantial fleet of these. I paid less than you for my flight as I was a member of staff of ACA at the time. We were also supposed to be the launch customer fpr the 428Jet, which of course was cancelled. We were all quite disappointed when the 428 never materialised.
I saw some of the training flights for the 328Jet at the airport where I worked and I can tell you with only two pilots on board that thing was a veritable rocket. One time they rotated and shot up at about 30 degrees nose up, not something you see often. Certainly has a lot more character than the CRJs.
All the Dornier aircraft were designed for STOL and short field operations, which brings with it the need for plenty of power. I saw a Dornier test pilot do an unrestricted climb in a 328JET at an air show, and it was quite a sight !
I love Espresso House! Spent a lot of time warming up in many of them (in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo and Bergen) during our month in Scandinavia this past December. We met so many wonderful people (locals and expats from all over the world) with whom we struck up long, wonderful conversations as we shared tables or sofas together. EH's are so much cozier than the big franchise coffee houses in the US -- and the coffee and pastries were so much better, too.
I really enjoyed watching your video it was really good. And yes please more of your mom. Keep up the great work. Thos was my first time watching one of your videos, I definitely enjoyed it. I will continue to watch them.
I flew from Dyce Airport, Aberdeen to Heathrow. It took about an hour to get stairs to get us off. My main flight was to Mumbai was shown to me PDQ only to be stuck on the apron for four and a half hours due to several f ups with ground staff. People were so scared they got off the flight to fly the following day. I was upgraded free of charge on my return trip six weeks later.
I’m watching this as you’re going through your research about that plane. I told ya- planes in the Midwest US flew in this manner when you were connecting from one small airport to another- like Iowa to Champaign, IL. And- I flew it when it was a turboprop- it was terrible. I thought I was gonna die.
Omg!
Turbo props are extremely safe - the bits inside the engine turn *much* faster than the blades on the outside !
I went though Gothenburg Landvetter Airport 4 times in May/June this year and it’s a lovely airport - I even enjoyed the tree covered walkway from the car park to the airport buildings in such lovely Summer weather - it’s clean, the staff are lovely and it’s got a great airy atmosphere for quite a small airport 👌
I love it too - very easy and convenient!
It's fantastic and - like Dan - we have a routine of one final korv and Troca from 7-Eleven before security, then one final kanelbulle from Pressbyrån after, then a couple of Gotland ales at O'Leary's. Not tried the MAX yet, it's been closed a couple of times we've come through.
The Menzies staff were fantastic last summer when BA lost our luggage. Can't fault them. The border staff could be a little more conversational, especially when I try my hardest to use my pigeon Svenska, but there we go.
The wine carries the same branding as the plane: Dornier
Horizon Air (QX) which is owned by Alaska was the launch customer of the 328Prop. They didn’t like the aircraft and dumped them from the fleet a couple of years later. Billund was built in the Jet era so this is maybe why it is so capable. It’s also one of the few airports in Denmark not built by the Germans in the early 1940s.
It sucks that Oscar and Dan never show any affection or acknowledge their relationship in their videos, but I guess it works for them. I love these vlogs!!!!
Weird comment.
The history of the airline reminds me of Loganair of Scotland: a business bought planes to use in their business and decided it made economic sense to offer the aircraft for mail and charter services in the off-time. Loganair was once also a BA operator.
Finally nonstop dan is uploading videos
Cool report! Got the chance to get onboard the Dornier 328-100 (turboprop variant) a couple of times, as it's the aircraft that Private Wings operate for Audi/ Volkswagen Group. I have taken in it from Ingolstadt (Audi hq) to Braunschweig (VW hq) and Györ (Audi factory in Hungary). They used to have 2x daily and 4-5x weekly respectively, mainly aimed at those in Germany to take day trips to the other sites.
The reason the middle seats in club were released was due to the closure of UK airspace because of a NATS glitch caused by a mis-filed flight plan. The situation should never have occurred but tbh was out of the airline’s control. In extreme circumstances like this BA have a policy to release the middle seat in club to allow as many disrupted passengers to get on their way as possible. But this absolutely should be communicated and you should be entitled to claim some points as compensation for the devalued product.
There is no contractual obligation on either BA or Sun-Air to block the middle seats, because operational contingencies always override passenger convenience. In such circumstances, BA should always offer points automatically - a polite phone call should fix it if they do not do so.
@NonstopDanVlogs
This is such a fascinating video to watch as I'm currently an American living in Denmark! And obviously an avgeek!
I flew out of billund airport a few months ago, felt sad walking past this cool jet as I went to board my Ryanair flight 😂
What might explain the size of Billund Airport as well is because it is surrounded by the LEGO Campus.
Love espresso house! Found it when visiting Stockholm..and yes, better than any chain here in the US. There used to be an airline flying these from Cleveland lakefront airport to Cincinnati. COVID killed it.
Really enjoyed this video, might be my favourite one from this channel yet, This is the coolest plane I’ve seen! I had no idea Billund Airport was OP for the town its in.
Also 22:12 as a Londoner I must agree. In fact I’m relieved someone else despises Heathrow as much as I do, everyone thinks I’m being a spoilt brat but I have a super long list of things I hate about this airport, number 1 being trying to get literally anywhere around this airport just plain sucks. Took me an hour once just to get from Terminal 4 to the central bus station (don’t get me started on that bus station). Much prefer Gatwick even if the views coming into land aren’t nearly as cool.
Hi Dan & Oskar and Dans lovely Mum. Billund is the home of Lego! IIRC. Always wondered about Billund, seen the Dornier at LCY
many times. Sun Air/BA often have a Dornier parked up at MAN, with a daily flight to Cambridge. Looks like you had a great flight..
Hey Dan,
If you like the Dornier 328, you should try the turboprop version. RNA (Rhein-Neckar-Air) based at Mannheim City Airport (MHG) in Germany operates them for flights to the Island of Sylt (GWT) in the North Sea 😊
I flew the D38 from MKE to GRR and back in 2006. The most interesting thing about its history is that both the turbo prop and jet equipped models carry the same designation, Dornier 328. I can’t think of any other like that, usually they’d at least change the number.
The turbofan version is known as the 328JET. The standard abbreviation on booking systems is 32J as opposed to 328 for the turboprop.
I knew about it it was originally a turbo prop changed to jets to enable it to land at London city due to high glide slope angle of 3.3 degrees instead of the standard 3 😊😊😊
The change from 328 to 328JET was due to customer (airline and passenger) preference for turbofan over turboprop engines, and had nothing to do with London City airport (LCY). The glidepath angle at LCY is 5.5 degrees, and there are plans to allow suitable aircraft to use RNAV approaches at 7.5 degrees.
My stepfather used to fly from Manchester to Billund use rewards miles frequestly - he always loved the service... Also Billund is the home of Lego...
Fly out of Alaska. You’ll see planes like this. Also, there are some planes like that in the Midwest, USA.
OMG! I'm so sad to see this! I work at Billund Airport and I love your videos so it would have been so fun to meet you! 😭
Oh no! But I loved it - hopefully I’ll be back🏃♂️
I flew on a Dornier 328 Jet back in 2003 on Great Plains Airlines from Belleville, Illinois, to Midway Aiport in Chicago!! I also thought that it was a nice little jet!!! Great Plains Airlines didn't last very long, unfortunately!!!
This was so much fun!
Hey I think a quick map somewhere in the beginning would be helpful
I discovered it on flight radar thinking it was c17 from the shape
Fun Fact: I live near an airport in England. Whenever one of these take off (normally once per week), they always look as if they are well a bit bigger. Surprised they are that small!
The 328 jet has been around for a long, long time. I’ve known of it’s existence, it’s you who didn’t!.
definitely some similarities with BA/Sun Air and the system of United and Delta using Skywest/Air Wisconsin on smaller CRJ esque flights
True!
I imagine all the Lego fans yelling while watching the video ‘it’s for the Lego fans’
Like that Swedish saying you mentioned, we have a similar riming phrase in English: "If it's free it's for me"
really been meaning to fly Sun-Air of Scandinavia. i have only flown the prop version with FLYRNA in Germany back in 2019 was quite a nice ride.
I think Lego had a toy plane like this in the 90s. 😂
Ahh makes sense now after i heard you saying who built the airport
I do remember that aircraft and it's turboprop cousin when they were used in the US years ago. Pretty cool to see it's still flying. I always wondered what happened to them.
Denver Air connection still flies them around the upper Midwest pretty cool to ride on
I have flown on DO328 when I was a child back in 2001, The only thing I still remember on that flight is me and my mom look out the window see the aircraft was banking on one side while the water in our glass is still level, we were like "what, gravity dies out here in the air?"
I only remember this because now I'm a airline instructor (sadly not on this type). And every now and then I'll still need to explain this myth to my student.
Can you please explain ? Thanks
Billund is one of my favorite airports to travel to in the world. Easy to use, great staff and so many connections.
Working with vendors in Struer I was always happy to travel there. And as one who grew up with Lego…and became an engineer as a result…yes of course I did go to the OG Legoland!
British Airways by Sun Air is an interesting experience.
I used to work on the turbo prop version of that plane for U.S. Airways.
Reminded me immediately of a local to Northwestern Ontario Airline - Bearskin Airlines out of Thunder Bay - they fly Fairchild aircraft exclusively.
Only smaller than the 328Jet - they fly the 19 passenger Metroliner.
I said the first time I went up in a Cessna, I was a large plane gal, the Metroliner, while a decent flight on a not so turbulent day, just didn't have enough window for me. But then again, I've yet to find one, among the 25 aircraft I've flown on between Newfoundland and Winnipeg over the years, that does give me the amount of window real estate I want when in the air.
Hi Dan, hello to you and your lovely Mum 😍 you have a new Irish subscriber 🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪😍I know that BA fly this aircraft type from London City to Dublin in my native Ireland (although I’ve lived in Manchester 21 years at age 52) - a similar aircraft type is in the King’s Flight (RAF) - I do try to go home to Ireland as often as I can to visit extended family there, although I go SailRail on the ferry from Holyhead - I do know that BA and our national airline Aer Lingus share flight numbers on their London to Dublin Flights (Codeshare) but I think this is between London Heathrow to Dublin - I don’t know if it’s still going on though, as I would be talking about pre-Covid ❤
I just bought tickets on that!!! Will do the video for my channel too! 🎉🎉🎉 thanks for review
It is not a British Airways aircraft, it belongs to Sun-Air (Sun-Air of Scandinavia), which is a Danish regional airline. Sun-Air is a BA franchise - it is a completely separate company from BA, but all its operations use BA branding and livery. Flights use BA codes and appear in all the various booking systems as BA flights. This allows BA to acquire extra passengers for its international flights without the expense and risk of running regional operations itself, and it allows Sun-Air to attract passengers who have onward connections for their flights. BA uses a pricing scheme known as OD (origin and destination), which means that the combination of Sun-Air and BA is usually cheaper than its rivals.
The benefits of franchise operations are very much mutual. Unfortunately Sun-Air was hit hard by the pandemic and was forced to scrap all its operations in Germany. It has a very good reputation, so there is reason to be optimistic that it will recover.
1 Day away from when this second - channel was created! Also nice
Hi Dan.. Just want to say congrats on the launch of your new channel.. Really enjoy your content.. Keep up the great work..! From a Canadian fan!
The US still have a couple of operators for the Dornier 328Jet like Denver Air Connection and Advanced Air.
I knew BA has a D328 because it also flies between Friedrichshafen (FDH) and Düsseldorf (DUS) as well as Düsseldorf and Billund and I saw it relatively often. However I couldn‘t find any flights even on the Sun Air site. So how did you book your flight?
Pronounced DorneeA 328, sometimes called the DoJet. Key lime flies them in Minneapolis to random small towns on subsidized government contracts.
I live in Minneapolis
Fun fact, they also made this Dornier as a turbo-prop
4:10 When i flew from Billund to Helsinki i changed in Amsterdam bacause it was cheap. It was my first time on the E295. But you can just fly nonstop if you want.
I love the E295!
@@NonstopDanVlogs My plane was only 1 month old when i flew it!!
Back in 2011 me and my wife flew BLL-BRU-AUH-MEL//SYD-AUH-MAN-BLL, with BA/Sun-Air as feeder from/to BLL ✈✈. Great fare, baggage checked through all the way out and back.
Loved the Sun-Air experience 🙌😊.
I think Billund has such a big airport for its size because of the proximy to LEGOLAND...
It is also kinda in the center so people from surrounding cities can fly from there.
Legoland doesn't attract THAT many people year-round, but it definitely helps.
@@NonstopDanVlogs I think it's the main reason for a tourist to go to BIllund.
It’s the main airport for Central and Southern Jutland.
The main reason the airport is big is because it is within 1.5 hours driving from 9 of the 12 biggest towns/cities in Denmark.
However the airport was build by LEGO.
Fun fact... until they were cancelled before the pandemic both Turkish airlines and qatar airways had direct flights to billund long before gothenburg flights
Great video. Billund is the hometown of LEGO. Legoland is just outside the airport 🙂
A Delta Connection airline (can't remember which one) used the 328J back in the 90s. I flew one from Columbus, OH to Somewhere in Mississippi. Loved that plane!!!!
So cool!
It was ACA (Atlantic Coast Air) before they morphed into Independence Air which was an attempt to set up a new airline in the USA.
@@erik_griswold Thank You!
I was an FA for Shuttle America for 10 years. I worked on the EMB 170-175. The Dornier 328J though a 1-2 seat configuration was much more spacious then a EMB 134-45 or a CRJ anything. It was a very unique aircraft that I had the pleasure to fly on.

Plane is trying to act like baby c17 lol 😂
I always spot next to this little airport called CBG and I see theses planes every week, very cool
I flew on this cool little plane with Delta about 25 years ago, BOS to BGR.
Just wow, superb!
I haven’t seen a Dornier in a long time. I flew on a British Airways one on my first ever flight from Scotland to London in the 2000’s.
Wtf was that BA Club Europe experience? Apparently they just put someone in the middle seat when they’ve had a cancellation etc. Not acceptable!
"This is the kind of experience that you get to have when you're with Dan" reminds me of the same energy as to when Oskar answered "I didn't have a choice" when it was his turn to answer why he joined the Morocco trip 😅
HAHAHAHA!
fun fact, that airplane also has a turbo prop variant
Similar to the BAE 146, lovely aircraft
This is just amazing!!!!!!! A nonstop Dan Vlog AND with more Oskar on it?????
Aww this comment made us both so happy!❤️
D328 have turbo prop and jet version.
We have them here in Nigeria
Legolaaaand. Thats why.... I saw kids in Riga airport with Lego trolleys, getting ready to fly to BLL for their first Legoland visit.
Have you tried the Dornier to London City if it still Operates to there.
Loving this new channel! I also love the Wiki-wormhole you disappeared down into 😂 Can’t wait for more 😊
Key Lime Air operates as Denver Air Connection out of Denver. They fly the Dornier 328 and a few other random small planes like the Metroliner and E145. They operate services from Denver to tiny airports in the middle of nowhere on EAS routes subsidized by the US federal government. They also codeshare with United and maybe some other airlines to connect people in these small towns to the rest of the country.
Flown on one for these from North Las Vegas Airport to Grand Canyon Airport
Great vid nice couple btw 😊
That's one plane I have always wanted to fly on!!
Great video
You talked about the sun of the grounder of lego. Well in Billund you have Legoland. The first and only original one. But I have never been there. There is also a Legonland in southern Germany.
I know this airline! It operates the same aircraft in the same BA drag outfit from Manchester to Billund. Interesting here because it is the ONLY British Airways international service from Manchester (the biggest UK airport outside London).
We, the whole earth population, didn't know rhe 328jet existed. Thank you for your enlightment.
I was at the CAP 3000 shopping centre in NIce France on the 3rd July 2023 and from the terrace area they have some great views of the end of the runway at Nice airport and I think it is the same plane you were on OY-NCM was at NIce airport around 1pm. Not sure why BA would fly the plane here unless it was a charter, maybe an incentive trip for AstraZeneca.
