Got the A7siii but I'd like the FX6 for the ENDs and the professionalism form factor not to mention the dedicated filmmaking form factor, added weight for more steady but still nicely cinematically shaky handheld feel
I went with the FX3 (financial + availability considerations) although I'd love to get an FX6 once we're sure that the world isn't going to lock down again. But the FX3 is great for a lot of smaller client and personal work and I wouldn't get rid of it.
My fx6 came with a protector/ hood for the monitor. Great video. Your short film last yeah got me so hyped about this camera when it came out last year.
Totally. All FX6 raves and reviews are meaningless if you CANNOT ACTUALLY BUY ONE! Have a friend who has been looking to buy one for 8 months, he really needs one for his business and paying clients. I told him to just screw it and buy an FX9 instead. More $$ and larger but at least you can get one. Have heard rumors that there will not be many, if any available until Spring 2022, although that could be a BS rumor too.
I just finally got one after checking google daily for months. I opened it up and emount lens eject pin is stuck in place so lenses do not click/lock into place. Had to send in to sony for warranty repairs having it less that 24 hours 😩.

Been working with the FX3 Cinema Line for mainly documentary films and it´s been a real joy. Powerful and reliable, amazing camera for professional work.
I lucked up and got an FX6 from a little shop in PA. I’ve had the EX1, EX3, FS5, FS7 and a few small mirrorless cams. The FX6 is the best ca,era I’ve ever worked with. It’s not perfect, but it checks every box for me.
I had an exact same conversation with another filmmaker recently! He went a brought an FX6 because he was shooting some more high class clients and didn't want to turn up with a mirrorless! AUTO ND....Thats just blown my mind, Dead handy feature I bet!
that comment about the look of the camera is so true! those who look at your gear and judge you on your gear over skill are total eggs and often aren't as skilled themselves. Loved the review! im on the fuji system but if I was a Sony boy I would be shooting with this bad boy
In my experience, I am often hired by a huge LA Production company. It's simple, you either have a C300 MKII or III, FS7 or FX9, or they won't hire you. They have an established workflow for all of these cameras, they even give you a .pdf on how they want assets formatted and archived. For them, it's not a matter of impressing them, it's a matter of they only want shooters to use what works for them and their clients (Discovery, Netflix, Food Network, etc.) It's funny, the FX6 is "Netflix Approved" for commissioned projects but you can't use it to shoot their EPK and BTS work. Because you don't get hired by Netflix, you are hired by their production company provider. I asked my producer and she said, "No, only the four cameras I named above." Even if you have an Amira, they might still hire you but only at the rate for the cameras listed above, no bump for Arri. This is the real world of how this stuff works. My friend who has been searching for an FX6 for months has a different problem. He has a group of corporate clients and they will only hire Sony. FS7, FX9, FX6, F5, F55. No Canon, no Panasonic, no BMD, no mirrorless of any brand, at least as A camera, although they will accept on a gimbal (he owns Panasonic A cam so he has had to keep renting FS7s for their shoots and he wants to BUY something, but he is set on an FX6 over a used FS7). So for his clients, I would have to do the same if I were shooting for them as I have the Canon C200 and 300 MKII. That's just how LA is. Everyone only wants what they want. Little flexibility. I really want an FX6 but it would cost me $15k because I have 14 EF lenses for my Canons. So I'd have to buy an FX6, all accessories and at least three of their Zooms which are close to $10k. if I owned E mount high end lenses, the FX6 would be a no brainer but I don't so adding one would be costly for me.
@@danbrockettDOP No doubt on larger high priced jobs you'd have to use their camera of choice! Its the same in New Zealand. Broadcast is the Sony fs or fx unless you go through a product house that has their own established requirements.

Tried the Komodo which I don’t really like and having two image-wise identical cameras makes a lot of sense. B-Cam and so on. Think I‘ll get one, keep on making these enjoyable videos! James, are you saying, that between the three cameras, a7S3, fx3 and fx6, that if you can't afford the fx6 get the fx3 otherwise get the fx6, but if you can afford the fx6 and one of the other cameras, get the a7S3 along with it?

"it's not about the gear you got...but" - It is TOTALLY about the gear you've got, I am a pro musician and back in the day if you showed up with a ratty guitar and amp they wouldnt even give you an audition. It may seem cruel, especially to those that do not have pro gear but gear doesn't make you a better artist, it just shows others you are serious.
Great video James - I’ve worked with the FX3 and it was my first experience in the Sony world. I’m building another kit now from scratch and I think the FX6 makes so much sense for my “A” Cam - but is it worth going FX3 or the 7siii as “b” cam. Of course for a third camera that can do photography, I’m feeling like the new a7iv can be my photo cam, plus a “C” cam for video if/when needed. Does this add up well to you? Have any thoughts or ideas/advice? Thanks in advance!
Honestly even for weddings I’d prefer evnd than ibis… idk ibis is cool but I think the less you worry about your lighting situation the better. This is coming from someone who is primarily a photographer though. Fx6 and fx3 is the dream team.
This is a great review. It gave me lot to think about. I am currently on bmpcc4k and sometimes i feel like i want an upgrade. The footage out of blackmagic is killer but the form factor and lack of internal nd filter is something i want an upgrade. Ive tried pocket 6k pro but barebones its heavier than my pocket 4k with tilta cage, 15mm rods and vlock plate. And the huge wide body shape is just too annoying.
Yeah, codecs and image quality is what has me confused as well. I've been debating this for like 3 months lol. FX6 has every other box checked, I just really like that BM image versus Sony
@@dna8269 yup. Its really really annoying to use bmpcc4k on daily basis(plus my touch screen display started to malfunction yesterday... BM has quality issues) but once you load your image to timeline you forget it all.
Great video as always James! I know you prefer the Blackmagic for filmmaking, but how do you feel about the FX6 for filmmaking if that was your only camera? Do you think the image quality is that much lesser than the BM or whats the flaw in comparison for more creative projects?
Hi James, regarding your point of client perception of having a bigger camera, has that affected the number of jobs you get or have you been able to get higher paying clients? Because if it hasn't, I think it's a moot point
Really enjoying these vids and how you approach filmmaking. Having just finally got hold of an FX6 I'm a bit intimidated by all the log shit. Any chance you could describe how you navigate all the different shooting modes? Do you just choose one and stick with it? Matt Johnson does a pretty good comparison between Slog3 and Cinetone, but man I think hearing you talking about that stuff too would sort a lot of heads out. Not going super technical, but like you I favour ergonomics and having a good feeling about a camera, you get your best stuff that way, so sweating about colour profiles seems to take me out of that mindset. Any thoughts on how to reconcile those things?

FS5ii with shogun inferno is my Camera to wow clients 😂. Everyone thinks it’s a RED with the vmount attached. A7SIII is my Run and Gun camera with the k3m
I don't understand the excitement of having internal nd filter. from the xdcam the internal nd have always been disgusting ... and it is nothing new ...
Those who are looking for information about the camera they already know: 1) Which batteries can be used and which ones should be used !!! 2) Ergonomics of the camera, many people know about internal ND filters and manual control. 3) Everyone knows what profiles the camera uses and everyone knows about double ISO. The review is not interesting, there is really no information, there are a lot of such videos. Wasted my time. I do not want to offend the author or be rude. But let's already tell information about which it is not known, otherwise you say all the same words.

@@danbrockettDOP Is any of your EF glass Sigma? If so the mc-11 adapter + Sigma EF glass works really close to native AF

You don't need IBIS the fx6 saves gyroscope data in video metadata so you can finely control stabilization in catalyst

Sporting the BM 6K is good for what I do... but auto focus on the FX6 would defo be ideal for interviews etc. 👌🏻

Great video as always James! I know you prefer the Blackmagic for filmmaking, but how do you feel about the FX6 for filmmaking if that was your only camera? Do you think the image quality is that much lesser than the BM or whats the flaw in comparison for more creative projects?
Hi James, regarding your point of client perception of having a bigger camera, has that affected the number of jobs you get or have you been able to get higher paying clients? Because if it hasn't, I think it's a moot point
Really enjoying these vids and how you approach filmmaking. Having just finally got hold of an FX6 I'm a bit intimidated by all the log shit. Any chance you could describe how you navigate all the different shooting modes? Do you just choose one and stick with it? Matt Johnson does a pretty good comparison between Slog3 and Cinetone, but man I think hearing you talking about that stuff too would sort a lot of heads out. Not going super technical, but like you I favour ergonomics and having a good feeling about a camera, you get your best stuff that way, so sweating about colour profiles seems to take me out of that mindset. Any thoughts on how to reconcile those things?

Man if you own an a7sii or a7iii and look for next upgrade~ FX6 is the better upgrade. You will not regret for the investment
FS5ii with shogun inferno is my Camera to wow clients 😂. Everyone thinks it’s a RED with the vmount attached. A7SIII is my Run and Gun camera with the k3m

@@peterchan518 nothing right now can replace FS5II and FS7II. They took out Cache Record on the FX line. If you care for that type of feature

The FX3 does not have variable ND which is a deal breaker.
ahaha variable ND is actually not that new: Éclair had auto-ND on some models of Cameflex (aka "the gas mask") back in 1946!

Those who are looking for information about the camera they already know:
1) Which batteries can be used and which ones should be used !!!
2) Ergonomics of the camera, many people know about internal ND filters and manual control.
3) Everyone knows what profiles the camera uses and everyone knows about double ISO.
The review is not interesting, there is really no information, there are a lot of such videos. Wasted my time.
