    I’ve seen tests when they use a higher pH cleaner on ceramic coatings that it actually makes them perform better and that’s because it’s cleaning everything and just leaving the ceramic coating.

    I know this may raise some controversy, but watch the video all the way through. Is PH really that important? Really? Who can really know everything when it comes to the ingredients in detailing chemicals other than the manufacturers? It's not a big deal! Don't overthink it.

    • @i4nic256

      You are right about pH not being the primary concern. There is no "free lunch" when it comes to cleaning chemicals...our technology still has not advanced for enough for most chemicals to be "safe" yet still effective enough to tackle the hard stuff. There are many "toxic" ingredients in cleaning products ( SLS SLES, amonium, phospates, etc) that help clean well but that can also strip vehicle surfaces of their natural oils. High alkaline and strong acids can also strip away too much from vehicle surfaces.
      Clear coat is just "plastic" and has necessary oils in it. If you use strong products that can make traffic film, grease, and grime more soluble then it will unfortunately also be effective at stripping away some of the oils from plastics, rubber and other surfaces. Don't get too crazy with the chemicals, kids.
      Take for instance- Meguiars Wheel Brightener, it is a highly effective acidic cleaner but that comes at a penalty. It is powerful enough to take care of the brake dust and grime but will definitely be stripping some of the wheels clear coat oils with it, guaranteed. Plus the vast majority of wheels have scratches, curb rash and weak spots in them that the acid will attack and weaken over time.
      One main concern with using harsh chemicals is, most vehicles spend a lot of time outside exposed to UV and this definitely starts to deteriorate the finish on cars especially as the years progress(oxidized plastic, rubber, and clearcoat). If you use strong chemicals on those finishes and keep stripping away more of the natural oils in the finishes, It may become a problem depending on how long you keep a car. I always use least aggressive methods first and then work up to stronger products.
      A perfect example of over cleaning: most people clean their rubber tires with aggressive cleaners regularly thinking it's beneficial....in reality aggressively cleaning tires especially with strong chemicals are not good for them. The rubber has UV inhibitors and oils that you are just stripping away. I only do an aggressive clean on my tires twice a year, after winter and end of the summer. The rest of the time I use very mild detergent and sometimes just a little warm-hot water and a brush. My advice is keep your car garaged if possible to limit UV exposure, always start with the least aggressive methods/ products before resorting to the aggressive stuff. YMMV

    I followed some advice of a couple of TH-camrs that warned me about road film and bonded contaminants and convinced me that washing my car with pH neutral soaps was a total waste of time.
    I took their advice and was using Purple Power RV and Boat Wash, and/or pre-treating with APC’s.
    I believe them when they say it won’t hurt the clear coat, as long as we rinse thoroughly. However I’m convinced that stuff really killed my black plastic trim. My Subaru was nearly new and the trim was still nice and black but after using aggressive soaps and pre washes it turned gray very quickly.
    From now on I’m using a boring safe soap, and claying and polishing as needed. If the paint feels smooth and looks good. I’m happy. Not losing any sleep over the terrifying road film that is landing on my car.

    • @i4nic256
      @i4nic256 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Using chemicals that can effectively make traffic film (oils, grease, etc) soluble have the side effect of also stripping some of the essential oils and additives in rubber, plastic and clear coat (essentially a type of plastic). Use the LEAST aggressive methods and cleaners first and DO NOT just take TH-cam advice as gospel. Do your research on the chemicals you plan to use and also the surfaces you plan on using them on. Strong chemicals should never be left to dwell on any surface too long and especially DO NOT let them dry. If using a strong chemical, use them only one panel at a time or on a moderate section that you can monitor and reapply or remove as necessary without it drying. Most videos show detailer's applying products to the whole car but realistically unless you are in an indoor environment the drying times of these chemicals can vary greatly due to environmental conditions (humidity, wind, heat, cold, dust, etc).

    • @MirandaDetailing
      @MirandaDetailing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s true. That’s why I don’t always use strong soaps.i will use APCs on the paint if needed to clean better but I found that even PH neutral soaps clean very effectively and will remove road film and grime. I’m not sure why some guys say it doesn’t. I’ve washed so many vehicles using PH neutral soaps as the surface was just as clean as when I used stronger soaps.

    Sooooooo is it important to maintain the wax or sealant on your car or do you think it is more important to keep your car 100% or close to it clean and free from traffic film. What's your opinion on that and thanks for the ph demonstration.

    • @MirandaDetailing
      @MirandaDetailing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I forgot to mention that, I thinks it’s very important to preserve the protection that’s on the vehicle. I don’t do a ton of maintenance washing on vehicles, the vehicles I work on are pretty gross. So that’s why I do an APC or degreaser rinse before we Foam and wash. It dissolves the hunk before I hit mitt to paint. I know that could be done with a stronger soap but it’s the procedure and it works great. 👍🏼

    • @TerrificFlow
      @TerrificFlow 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, if you put a coat of natural wax and use a high ph soap, it will strip it faster. So in this case, you do need to think about it if you want to avoid wasting your time and money on wax. But if you just wash and quick detailer your car every couple of weeks, without having a protection on it, then any soap would do.

      True. I thought it was interesting that the PH was so different when mixing both soaps that have a PH of 8. But mixing it with water I think also changes the chemical make up just a little, making it a little more alkaline. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I've noticed Chemical Guys really did some damage to the industry with there radical brand of marketing. They literally have 20 different car soaps...then came out with 4 different types of polishes with that V-series...at least a dozen different types of dressings LOL. I think it just causes a lot of confusion with beginners and DIY'rs
    Now I realize companies need to keep coming out with new products...but they just keep reinventing the wheel over and over again. There is nothing "cutting edge" from them
    But hey, there opening store all over the place now, so they might as well just keep doing it if people are buying.

      A measure of acidity or alkalinity of water soluble substances (pH stands for 'potential of Hydrogen'). A pH value is a number from 1 to 14, with 7 as the middle (neutral) point. Values below 7 indicate acidity which increases as the number decreases, 1 being the most acidic.

      High alkaline’s dissolve oils, greases, and fats, wax and polymers are actually considered an oil or grease so they dissolve with high ph. Acids can also dissolve wax and sealants. So anything to high or to low are not good for maintaining wash’s.
