  • EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #131: HALSHAM
Our last foray into the East Riding this side of Christmas brings us to Halsham, approximately 4 miles west of Withernsea town situated mostly on the Southern side of the B1362. Halsham is a scattered farming village spread over some three miles of Holderness countryside. The land is very flat, which is a great advantage for a large agricultural area. Farms out here grow many acres of rape, barley, wheat, peas and beans. There are several pig farms as well as a number of cattle, sheep and chickens.
Building within the village is very restricted, as the land must be kept for agriculture. Every year a ploughing contest takes place here. Halsham once boasted a very fine cricket team, but that’s now disbanded. It used to have a post office and a pub at one time, but those too have both gone to the wall too.
The village doesn’t have much in the way of landmarks at its Southernmost or Easternmost extents, barring a butchers shop and a few minor buildings of note. However the Northwestern corner is a different animal. That’s the oldest part of Halsham, and it contains Halsham House, once an alms hospital. Its second only to the church nearby, for being the oldest building in the village. What makes this place really stick out though would be a massive mausoleum, built at the back end of the 18th century, to house the remains of one of the East Riding’s most prominent families.
    Let’s go check it out!
