Agreed. Working on older cars like that is like putting out fires only. Only call when something is emergent.

I prefer working on equipment. The clientele doesn’t typically give any fuss on the bill because they need the stuff fixed to make money. My car clientele is a small list because I’m not for everyone. I’m for the people who value good service and want their vehicles fixed right.

For whatever reason a large portion of automotive mobile mechanics are working for pennies.
Recently my neighbor asked me to give him a quote on his Enclave after cracking his oil pan. He told me shops wanted anywhere from 1800-2400 to do the job.
I told him I'd help him out and get back to him with a quote: 15.6 hours according to book time. I said I'd do it for $600 over my downtime, which he felt was to much.
He found a mobile mechanic that came out and did the job for $400, including parts.
The guy came out 3 days in a row to work on it. He left oil stains all over the driveway, but otherwise seemed to do the job.
I have no idea how these guys aren't struggling.

I feel your pain .Its the same deal with residential air conditioning .The cheapest to get it running then it turns into call backs cause they didn't want a replacement. I usually don't even bother with people like that .

The newer gm ecotechs coolant systems I hate. It seemed like everything with the plastic coolant lines just crumbled. I refuse to deal with them any more.

my dad was a mechanic, he would always say "if you cant get close go long". i normally only think of really long extensions after everything else fails.

Same thing I’m going thru. I do some mechanical at my house. Guy left his vehicle here over 6 mo. now & hasn’t paid me nothing. Sister dumps a towed vehicle here 6 weeks ago & hasn’t given me parts or $ yet. One Nissan I worked on I replace both headlights because they were sunburnt & u have to take bumper off to replace headlights or bulbs. He didn’t want to put new bulbs in!! WTF! 😮

My least favorite it a chrysler 300 always doing work on this one that the lady never has the money for parts let alone for labor. And she gets up set when I fix one part the others start making noise and I have to keep telling her it's cause there is so much that needs to be don3

Charge your time. If it takes 2 hrs, by all means charge it. That car would have gone to a shop and waited until they were ready to work on it. Working for broke people will keep you broke too.

My least favorite is European cars. Overly complicated in many cases. American, Japanese, and Korean cars normally are pretty good until you get into ones that have a lot more electronics in them.
