Honestly, I feel like every time I've gone to GameStop over the past year, the people inside always seem a bit more dead inside. Whatever passion may have been there is gone, and a simple purchase turns into a game of twenty questions for an upsell. The relationships or genuineness that I felt before has sort of fizzled away, and now knowing a little bit more of the inner workings, I suppose I can understand why. I knew it was their job to push certain products, but given this dynamic, I feel really bad for people who have to conform to this soulless approach.

yes & gamestop will fall like blockbuster except sooner it's 50/50 digital games are the wrong direction because there discriminated product if you get caught modding or hacking xbox you get your digitals games taken away but they cannot do the same for disc games which is very wrong & is why they want digital games more so can to control us & maybe one day try to control our digital games like making them unavailable during a update or something.

    This happened to me once.
I recently picked up a Nintendo switch and was looking for some new games. I thought “Why not try Pokken.” I go to gamestop and find pokken. I go up to the register and say “I would like this please. Oh and can it be a new copy?” Do you want to know what they said? They said “I really don’t think there is a difference between new and used copies. You’ll be better off with a used copy.”
So to all those people who think he is making this up, he isn’t.

I share your pain man. I too was an assistant store manager at one time and I was forced out because they realigned the district and wanted me to go back to being a GA. When I refused to lose my position I was later fired for "penciling in counts" which was completely untrue. They told me they had it on camera but when I asked to see this supposed footage I was told "that's not important". So yeah, they're not on my good side since then.
The pre order thing made me crazy too, why would I want someone to pre order a game that they will hate? It was nonsense and whenever I brought that point up I was shut down. That is not catering to your customer base, it's catering to your own pocket.

Had a terrible issue with Gamestop and the Nintendo Classic Edition. They had it in stock and would not sell it until Friday morning. I called throughout the week if it remained in stock and management told us they won't release it till Friday morning. At least twenty of us waited in line from 3am til opening only to be told they sold consoles the day before. The explanation given to us was that too many people was calling complaining to Corporate and the district manager was contacted by Corporate and told their store to go ahead and sell what they had in stock. Gamestop is full of shit!! The employees gave us a number that was supposed to be Corporate and I was damn near on mine for an hour and a half before anybody answered my call. So I talked to a customer representative that sounded like they were from India Who could not help me out and told me that they can only email a district manager and was unable to be in contact with Corporate. So I asked him how was it possible that people were able to get in contact with Corporate if you the customer representative can't even get a hold of Corporate? Right at that moment I knew the fucking game stop manager was lying and were holding the system and sold them to their friends.

Finally! Someone who actually worked in the same position I did is actually making an educated point about this.
I used to manage a GS as far back as 2002. Even back then, they were pulling this kind of shady ass shit. Our employees were hired because we all knew our shit and specialized in different genres. Eventually, they started pushing this type of crap with used games. We pushed back because they got to be super excessive about it. As time passed, the merger happened to buy up EB, everything changed. Our district was wiped out and replaced with kids who knew NOTHING about gaming except for your CoD, BF, Halo, and GTA games. Ask them about anything off the beaten path and they stare back at you like a deer in the headlights. Gamestops benefit with that is they paid them only minimum wage, didn't have to worry about anyone going against shady practices, and made nothing but profit off of their backs.
I haven't shopped there in 8 years. I refuse to go back. Especially since now you can get games cheaper and not have to deal with someone jamming an Edge card in my face. Power Up Pro or whatever it is now.

This is why I don't shop at gamestop anymore. As someone who is knowledgeable on video games and what I want, the last thing I want when I go to the store is someone hounding me to buy shit I don't want. Their practices are driving away dedicated gamers who are going to spend way more in a console cycle than someone who knows nothing about games and only goes in once or twice a year. I used to leave with something every time I entered a gamestop a few years ago, but now Best Buy and Amazon get all my game business.

There was an employee near me who was trustworthy and was just a GOOD employee. I was wondering why I haven't seen him in 2 weeks ( I go there pretty often too just to look around). This video probably tells me he was fired because he wasn't a "shitty" employee. I guess they like bad employees just because the bad employees get them more money. Still hoping gamestop will go out of business one day.

I used to work for GameStop. For every X amount of transactions or amount of money you sell, you have to meet an X amount of percentage of services sold, Pre-orders or Game Informer subscriptions. When you didnt meet with them, you got disciplined by the manager and were forced to watch instructional videos to help you sell it. But i never remember being forced to push pre-owned merchandise. You can suggest it to the customer and it was better for us but, it was never a priority. For us, it was Pre-orders and GIs.

Our version of GameStop in Canada is EB Games..they must not have these policies here because they actually try to push the new system here and have never bugged me to get used games. They have segested it but never push me into get it used. The only thing I find they push here is the warranty on games and I just tell them no and they drop it.
Maybe that's why it's a different name in Canada also because me and a friend of mine were wondering that today.
I was even in the store back in November and the guy was trying to push the Switch then instead of a used system.

I used to work at Harvey Norman in the computers department and we sold video games there. I would earn commission based on the amount of profit I would make for the store when I sell something. On a computer, or phone, or camera, or a lot of other things in the store there were huge profit margins that I could earn a lot of extra money on or have the flexibility to give customers big discounts if I just felt nice enough to not be concerned about the commission.
However what I soon learned is that in the video game department, there was practically no profit margin at all. The games would usually cost us $95 to stock and we would have to sell it for $100. Pretty much the same with consoles. On a computer, we would usually get it wholesale for $1000 and be able to mark it up to $2000. Meaning that I could discount it all the way down to $1300 and still make a nice $30 of commission for myself.
I think game publishers are just too greedy expecting such high wholesale prices. So it does not surprise me that stores that have to sell only video games, have to resort to all these sneaky tactics to stay in business.

I interviewed for a key holder position, interviewed with the district manager in the Alhambra CA area. Wow disgusting views, terrible interview. Pretty much turned into an argument of him calling video games useless luxury items that no one needs with quite some disdain In his tone. I asked the guy if he even played video games he said maybe just call of duty or Madden. I made a point that he may as well call all music, art, culture, useless luxury items and got out of there. This latest stunt doesn't surprise me. Boycott this place, there are some great indie stores out there, give em some love.

Still going on, did a store pickup order for a new Wii U Pro controller. Got the email that it was ready and when i went in they prepicked a USED controller. Not a fan of used controllers.....asked “hey its not new?” The worker was a young guy and it maybe was an honest mistake...but $50 wasnt a used controller price...he checks the order and goes oh its new...looks on the floor...nothing...goes to the back and bingo they have one..hmmmm. They were going to send me 30 minutes away before I asked to order one in. Funny how the computer didnt show one. And then i got the used sales pitch.

Instead of Penalize, Incentivise. Where I work which isn't a game store, it's a bakery but it is still kinda relevant we are told to always offer loyalty cards and Upsell most of all, as an incentive we would have competitions of who could give away the most loyalty cards and who could get the most Upsells by the hour, this not only motivated us to do better, but it got customers coming back and it got customers to try new products, through this we could earn the business more money, oh and if we came last we would never get in trouble at all, mainly because the managers knew we all tried our goddam hardest, and that is a good system

Felt like they were still doing this ten years ago, which was the last time I ever went into a Gamestop store. The employee kept pushing the "store display" copy on me, when I just wanted a brand new, factory sealed one. Fuckin' horrible customer service, and like you said, I had no reason to ever spend money there again.

    • @Ninkyo893
      @Ninkyo893 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep. It's like driving a new car off the lot. Once the seal is broken, it loses its value. If Gamestop wants to sell people so-called "new" games that they're taking out of the packaging and handling, then we should be getting a substantial discount off of the price.

  • @matthewlinton1260

Oh this is only the half of it, Gamestop now has an employee policy that if your Circle Of Life score is below a certain percentage for a month, you get a final (3rd) coaching, even if you haven't had any warnings before. I've been here for 5 years and it's ridiculous what they've become. If it weren't for needing the little bit of a paycheck I get I wouldn't be here dealing with this, and what's with all the "loot and collectibles"? If you haven't been into a Gamestop in a while, a majority of the store is taken over by toys, Pop figures, plushies, t-shirts, and all sorts of miscellaneous merchandise. I'm sitting here right now looking at a wall full of Star Wars-themed mugs that haven't sold in months, because nobody comes into a gaming store for that, but that isn't what GS believes. Rant over, good watching!

I cringe with a tad of anger watching this, as an Ex-GameStop employee. I got into a fight with my boss at the time because they were instilling the usage of an iPad, which caused you to be up in everyone's business immediately when they walked in, and I was against it. As a Gamer, it wasn't right to force memberships, ThinkGeek, and reservations, as well as the USED policies down a customer's throat. You go to GameStop for games, not corporate bs. Ever since I quit, I haven't shopped at a GameStop since, and nor do I plan to.

What I always found so funny about GameStop corporate is that they have absolutely no understanding that the customer can always say NO. Even when you try your best to sway them on the card, pre-orders, etc, if they ultimately say no then that's that. But corporate simply won't accept that and blames the employees, which of course is complete bullshit. Doing that simply encourages bad behavior by the employees and doing things to ensure they don't get fired for simply accepting no as an answer.

This is the reason why i support moms and pops stores. thier used games won't cost you alot and if you trade in your games you get a fair price. May not be alot but its more than what gamestop would offer you.

In 2010, when I was in the military a fellow service member gave me a ride to the nearest gamestop which was about 30 minutes away. I wanted to buy Final Fantasy IX. The guy who helped me said they only had one copy. When he grabbed the game I noticed that he looked at it in a strange way and then immediately placed it inside of a bag and began to ring it up on the register. I paid for it, said thank you and left. I never looked at the game until I got home. Then I realized why the gamestop employee stared at the game in the store. The back of the cd case was damaged as if someone hit it with a baseball bat, however the discs were in mint condition. I did not have a car to drive back to the gamestop and I did not want to inconvenience my co-worker so I just kept the game. Gamestop left a bad taste in my mouth.

I can understand why everyone would be up in arms based on hearing some of these things. But the thing is, I have seen/heard of bad management, and at my store we don't force anyone into anything. Hours don't get cut or anything like that. The program is a really good one in my eyes. I'm sure there are areas where the hours got cut, people might get wrote up due to poor management, but that's what it is, poor management. In my area we have a great relationship with all of our supervisors and at no point have I ever been asked to lie to a guest on new or pre-owned games, nor have I but told to force pre-orders or the Pro card on anyone. They are all offers we have that we tell our guests about. I used to have a bad manager that diminished moral with cutting hours if they didn't like you or you didn't get this or that with things that were going on. But now with our new Store Manager and new District Manager things are going great and everyone loves coming in. I am sorry to hear that things apparently aren't the same all over though. Hopefully it all gets sorted out and everyone can settle down, take care and happy gaming.

Well I asked for the game and ths CHILD demanded my ID. I asked for the manager and they came out of the back, and was maybe older then the first person but not over 23. I asked again for the game and was asked again for a damn id. I explained I came to get the game used wifes debit card to get cash for the game and didn't grab my id. Altered Beast 7861 They freak out because the pro-order quota is very high and hard to sell. Also when you cancea pre-order it doethurt the employee who made the initial pre-order, it hurts the employee WHO IS MAKING THE CURRENT TRANSACTION. So now by just having the misfortune of being at register during a cancellation, now that employee has to work extra hard to bring their preorder quota back up, which is the dumbest business practice I've ever seen. Its like if you are driving and someone stole a car and hit you with it and you get set to jail for getting hit. Its stupid and it creates a toxic work environment to constantly fear your coworkers.

maybe if GameStop wants to encourage more sales , they should consider reducing their margins for used so they can move more volume. Rather than lie to customers. After all they will need some customers to buy new so they can later capitalize on used sales down the road. It is a business and they are in it to make money, but making second hand sales your primary source of income is a long game and needs to be played like one. As far as my local GameStop, they've been good to me, but I do not support this position at all. Maybe they should incentiveize employees to hit high sales goals and such rather than emphasize used sales. Getting customers to spend money means that later on they'll spend more if you made them happy about it.

And now to hear some more bullshit going on like this a game stop. I've been buying video games since before funcoland was around. And I swear to God I've never heard of bullshit like this this will seriously make me not want to go to game stop anymore. Not that I go in the first place because now I am on Steam and I get my Xbox games digitally. Fuck this place +30% of the people there are genuinely nice people Who get treated like shit anyway. The rest of them are these guys to swear they know everything there is to know about video games and are only going to push the games that they like in your face and if you don't like the games they like then the resort to the game stop game of the month that they have to push fuck that no more I'm done

Without new games to spend store credit on, nobody is selling their games, and suddenly you dont have a decent selection of used games any more. There goes your bread and butter. I flat out told a local shop this, but they just kept saying they dont carry many new games because they dont make money off them. They are gone now.
