The new Zion church? I dont want to be that guy, but I went there when a buddy of mine was in school there and it was awful. Ribs were tough, brisket dry, just not good bbq
I've been a fan of Sam Houston since 2nd grade (the 80s) when we went to Huntsville on a field trip. There are also "museums" and buildings in Virginia (birthplace) and Tennessee. I need to do some more traveling. One of my ancestors worked for Sam (involved in the Revolution) and was a big admirer of the General.
I have lived in Huntsville for 10 years now and I can tell you I love this town. Small enough where we all get to know each other well but big enough to where it ain't boring.
My grandparents live here. My grandfather was a physicist and graduated from SHU (he passed in 2016). He and my grandmother donated some thier land from their ranch to the schools astrology department. They recently opened the new observatory there named the Dominey Observatory.
Thanks for the tip for Church BBQ now Holy Smoke BBQ it’s a place I would have passed by it was really good well worth more visits. This place reminds me of the long gone icon Leon’s BBQ in San Francisco a small hole in the wall that often had a line of people waiting to get in.
This is nuts. I just learned I'm a 7the generation Texas on my mothers side. Apparanty, my 5th great grandfather JW Sandiford was at the Walbarger event where he was scalped. I mean I just learned this. I'm so blown away and couldn't feel more Texan than I do now :)
It's about time you mentioned texas prisons. One of the most archaic system of incarceration ever devised. Every little town you go to in Texas has a Walmart and a prison that keeps the population alive. They locked me up as an adult at age 17 and sent me to prison for Marijuana and made me a felon for my whole adult life. And I'm white. I can speak on the ammoutnof racism in the Texas legal system and I witness a whole generation of black and brown people locked up forever behind minor drug offenses. That state that I grew up in will hopefully have a reconing one day. Yall still practice slaves with your prison system. No museum can make that look nice. So ya definitely don't mess with Texas. And I'm so glad I got out and will never set foot there again
I've lived in Texas my whole life and I couldn't be prouder. The whole American prison system has evolved to make money for free labor. It's an awful fucking practice but you shouldn't write off any state because of it. Be pissed at the govt that put you there,,, not the state itself.
I mean I lean further left than the Democrats and I don’t have a problem with his statue. I might be biased as a relative though. I also think that statues are totally fine being kept up as it’s just part of American history. If don’t people learn about the good AND the bad then they’re just gonna be poorly educated!
Sam Houston does not belong to the right or left. He belongs to all Texans. And you clearly don’t know anything about his politics with this comment. You do know he was the only Southern governor to vote no on succeeding from the Union right?
I'll be darned, I just subbed today and thought it'd be cool if you did a Huntsville episode (where I live) and here we are!
_In loving memory of:_
*Richard Temple Houston* (November 12, 1931 - February 25, 2021)
As a Bearkat l, I love this episode
I don't know how I got here.... I live in Huntsville but I never been to the Huntsville State Park... Thank you for sharing...👍
It’s worth making the trip to Huntsville for Church BBQ.

There also the prison cemetery close to the college in Huntsville

Welcome to the club 🇸🇴🇵🇱
That shift mentioned Dallas underground you need to go see what that's all about
I just looked the homestead up for Huntsville says it’s permanently closed cause I would have traveled to check that place out
This was done in 2011 when I lived there.
Suggest you missed out on veterans museum next to hinville prison museum. It is the best I ever visited
I did 35 years in Huntsville state penitentiary
Looking at your thumbnail, I thought you had invited actor Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights) to portray Sam Houston. 😉
