I started watching Adam's videos when he made his first Wii U retrospective video. Revisiting his videos years later, I'm always so impressed by his usually very accurate predictions. I was still in middle school back then, now I'm studying at University. Even so, Adam keeps making high quality, entertaining and informative content, year after year. Most importantly, he's consistent and you can tell that he really cares and knows what he's talking about. Thinking back, I think Adam's discussions stuck with me from middle school and really ignited my interest and love of game collecting. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for doing what you do!

1. Change TH-cam policies (doesn't cost a thing) 2. Lower price of Wii U + Super Mario Maker package to around USD 200-250. 3. Make the console region-free (one small update: doesn't cost a thing) 4. Drop the prices on AAA games like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, etc. 5. Make commercials telling people it is NOT just a Wii with a gamepad.
+ApemanMonkey The only one I disagree with is droppping the prices. It would be a flat out terrible move to be dropping the price of Mario Kart and Smash Bros, two of the Wii U's undoubtedly best games, just package them in bundles, but those games are way too good and profitable to have their priced lowered, maybe after their next generation console, but now would be a terrible time to do so especially considering their limited game numbers they have for the system.
Even though I have the digital version of Fatal Frame V I still kind of want to import the physical version just so I can have a few more Wii U games on my shelf lol.
+DreamcastGuy I want it to be physical because the tiny 32 gig hard drive the Wii U came out with is almost full and I don't feel like buying an external HD for a dying console.
Get it while you can as it's officially sold out in all Game stores at the correct retail price of £50 and being a limited edition no more are getting made. It's on Amazon & eBay now for £80-£100. Soon it will probably cost more.

I remember having a Gamecube as a kid and at the time I liked it but I ended up getting a PS2 also to play games like Star Wars Battlefront, God of War, GTA San Andreas and Onimusha. Looking back, I wish I had continued to expand my Gamecube collection and picked up some of the rarer games like Gotcha Force, Baten Kaitos, Lost Kingdoms, Skies of Arcadia, etc.
+Stranker Nah, if it was like the Gamecube, I would have bought the Wii U. But since I only have the Gamecube, I don't see Wii U being as worthy as the Gamecube is. The Wii U reminds me more like the Sega Saturn, underrated and very hated on during the time of it's release.

+GH0ST250 That is so right. If they released Mario Maker rather than just the basic New Super Mario Bros. U, which was pretty much a standard Mario experience, then I know that I would have easily have played the Wii U so much longer after launch, whereas as it was I played it for a week or two, then went back to the Xbox 360 for a few of months until Lego City Undercover came out, played that for a week or two till I finished it and then I didn't even turn on the Wii U for over a year, literally April 2013 I had finished Lego City Undercover and the next game I bought for the Wii U was Bayonetta 1 & 2, and that didn't come out until October 24th 2014. If I had Mario Maker I would easily have been engrossed more in the Wii U in the early stages and maybe would have bought more games, although looking back at the early releases there really weren't many great releases, the multiplatform games were mostly games that had already been released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 and the early exclusives were quite lacklustre in comparison to the line-up after Bayonetta 2 was released with just Mario, Zelda WW and Monster hunter being any good, but I have only recently actually played those Zelda and Monster Hunter.
I've been comparing Iwata admitting NX is being worked on to Saturn Is Not Our Future since the moment he said it. Sure, everyone knows that new consoles start development the second the older one is released, sometimes earlier, but when you start talking about the new one, it kinda sends the message that the new one is coming soon.
+Indy The Great Personally that is true and I agree with that 100%. But for me what really was the last nail in the coffin for me was the Terrible E3 2015 presentation with there Nintendo direct and the fact that the games that they showed off where the games that they announced for other E3's prior to that minus a few games here and there the only two games that i got pump for at E3 2015 where Yokai Watch and Super Mario Maker even though I am almost 21 by the time this comment is posted. And another nail in the coffin that was nailed for me was when Nintendo's new president Tatsumi Kimishima said "I knew that the Wii U would fall" that to me translates to what Bernie Stolar said Back 18 years ago at E3 1997 "the Saturn is not our future" more fluently than back in March of this year 2015 because it sound more strait forward to me.
+Indy The Great I would go so far as to push the release of the NX to at least Holiday 2017. The difference between Stolar in 1997 and Iwata in 2015 was that Stolar got on stage, at E3, right where you're supposed to sell your stuff the hardest, and willingly admitted the loss of support to the Saturn, while Iwata basically was forced to admit the existence of the NX in an investor meeting, because to do otherwise could easily lead to even worse rumours. Add to that that we probably won't hear an official peep about the NX until E3 2016, which tends to start off a year of hype-building until actual release. A year, not a couple months. Finally, many developers only recently got kits for the NX recently, which they're supposedly suspected to use to build a whole game from scratch. Could they do that in a year? Probably not.
+Lord Beerus The WiiU (and most likely their next console) don't use x86_64 architecture but a custom PowerPC one made specifically for the GameCube. They need this in order to not break the hardware retrocompatibility and is one of the reasons that studios have so much problem porting existing games or creating new ones.
+Aaron Hazelton Stolar did not admit that "the Saturn is not our future" on the E3 stage. It was an interview that happened with EGM off-stage. Still, his statement did not change the sales numbers for the Saturn, as the average consumer had no idea about what was going on with Sega and the Saturn.

+SeepMan Productions Ive met several people at Gamestop who thought the Wii U was just a new controller for the Wii. The casual audience doesn't know better because Nintendo failed to market the console properly. And Wii U was just a bad name that confused many.
And you can't really blame people for that. People who aren't as passionate about gaming won't waste too much time researching these things, it's Nintendo's job to make it easy for everyone to understand what their product is, what it does and how it differs from previous products and the competition. They failed horribly outside of Japan to get any of these points across to the casual gamer.
The Wii U has been one of my best selling consoles since Mario Maker came out. I tell parents that you can download levels online so it never end, that it builds creativity because you can make your own levels and it has the nostalgia of classic Mario and they usually end up buying one. There will be a lot of kids getting a Wii U in Vegas this Christmas.
This video actually convinced me to go out and buy a wii u a few days ago, I honestly wish I would of bought it sooner, best exclusive games out there and I'm having a ton of fun with it. I know the NX is coming out soon but I had to get my hands on the exclusive titles.
TheDistraughtJuggernaut smh. TWWHD actually had some common complaints fixed (slow sailing and triforce quest too long). They won't do anything like that with SMS. The original game is FINE. And if they were to make a remake, it'd also cost 50$.
Likely not for multiple reasons. - PowerPC, the Wii U's architecture is dying. - PowerPC is also not handheld-friendly. This is bad because Nintendo wants a shared architecture across the board.
+Neoxon Actually they increases the possibility that they can. The NX handheld would, in this scenario, act as the gamepad. It's all highly speculative of course, we don't know any of this shit.
AdamKoralik That'd still require the PowerPC architecture, something that doesn't work very well on handhelds. And while Nintendo's software programmers are talented, they aren't on Microsoft's level to the point where they can get backwards compatibility to work with ARM (the likely architecture for the NX Platform across the board).
I finally got a Wii U this year for Christmas(yes I have a Switch got it at launch). And my God Adam is right. The Wii U is easily my 2nd or 3rd favorite console. I’ve wanted one since 2012. Thanks Adam for convincing me to buy a Wii U.

Wii U. That is a main part of the problem, IMHO. It's the same name as their last system with a U added. I know that I am making an obvious statement, so perhaps my implication is also obvious, but it is NOT good marketing. Too many people thought it was just an ADD-ON for the Wii for too long. "Ohhh, lemme buy this special controller with a screen in it" -- Nope. I dunno. Not marketed well.

***** I disagree. Adding "super" in front of Nintendo actually adds meaning. SUPER gives the implication of improvement. So a Super Nintendo is better than a Nintendo. However adding the letter U does not add any meaning that I can see. "U" is just a letter. It does not quantify or qualify. by name alone it barely changes the identity of the Wii.
No your right, when I first heard it I honestly didn't think it was a new & different system. And once I learned it was a new console I still assumed that it wasn't going to be any good since the Wii name was still attached to it. What sold me on was the recent game Mario Maker, that game alone is worth it 110% (just my opinion).
I know there are a lot of collectors who do not own a Wii U and games right now, but who will eventually do so after it dies, but I have a message for those people: "If you care anything about the videogame-industry and/or Nintendo, get a Wii U and games now. Support them directly instead of paying resellers later on."
I love the Wii U, so many pick up and play games. Have people over drink some beers and play 4 player couch co op games are and will always be better than online.

Mario maker really could have saved wii u. I checked a streamer playing the game, and I just got hooked. I watched his every stream for two weeks, to the point where I had no choice but to get it. So I bought a Wii U and Mario Maker. Not a bundle by the way, so I practically pay 350€ for a single game. And I did it well knowing about NX, and that Wii U had only a year left. That's how good of a system seller it is. It made me buy my first new game console ever. If I had just waited a year, I could have saved a lot of money. But I just NEEDED it right away. Had it launched earlier, even as a launch title, and marketed properly without new console looming in the horizon, it could have made people buy the console. Now I guess it is too late to make a considerable difference any more...
+Tyrisalthan Yeah... People keep on saying that Mario is the same game but no. Every single major Mario game has released the right game for the right era. What Nintendo needs to do is clearly define what era this is and where video games are going with every console, and say, "We're already way ahead of you. Here's this thing you never knew you needed. Had to rewatch this video in light of the recent release of Super Mario Maker 2. I'm curious as to how this game will turn out this time and how Nintendo will handle the online situation.
I own a Wii U, but when I look at my Xbox One and PC, I have very little reason to use the Wii U system outside of Nintendo games. They need a better online system, more third-party support and overall need to consider dropping their "kid-friendly" UI scheme.
I'm going to get a wii u for Christmas it's the only console of this generation of console that I'm willing to get and that's because I really want to play supermario maker and all the other supermario games out for this system. I'm actually excited about getting the supermario maker game and I haven't been this excited about getting a console and game since the n64 and supermario 64 and Star Wars episode one racer which are two of my favourite games of all time so far. I haven't played many sega Dreamcast games because I just got my first one last week and only got five games and they are all rpg's which aren't my favourite games to play but the ones I got with the Dreamcast are really great. Adam could you recommend some Dreamcast games that are really good and not rpg's so I can get some good smups and fighters to play .
+allan fulton There's Ikaruga. There's a bit of slowdown for the Dreamcast version. This isn't a bad thing though. I've heard that the GameCube version isn't playable for a lot of people because when things get too chaotic, that slowdown helps them out a lot. It seems to be a signature of Treasure's games. They push every single hardware that they are on to it's limit. It truly is the most beautifully done shoot 'em up I have ever played and I play a ton. Soul Calibur, Street Fighter III: Third Strike and Power Stone all must haves. Best 3D fighter at the time, won a ton of awards and even greatest game of all time from some video game websites. Third Strike is the most fluid 2D fighter. It's a little technique heavy but if you've got the reflexes for it you can turn the tide of any battle. Good luck getting Power Stone. I dunno what it goes for nowadays but it's probably a lot.

Personally, I love the first one more but that's probably because I put way more time into it. It's not a serious competitive fighter but a lot of people seem to like it more than I do. Oh! I think the most precise word to describe the Wii U is "disappointment" in general. Don't get me wrong, it has really good games, but you can count them with your hands. A lot of missed oportunities and posibilities with the gamepad but, it just seems that Nintendo realized too late all the flaws of their design.

It's because you get an average of 1 retail AAA game every 1 or 2 months, which it's not bad, but half of them turn to be disappointing it the sense they don't justify the $60 tag or are a complete waste of time and money because you can get better a better experience in older platforms (i.e. Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival). Also total disappoint for expected titles like Metroid or F-Zero that we know at this given point of time they aren't coming for Wii U. Sorry, but that's how i feel with my Wii U, it's the perfect example of missed opportunities.
Something that I didn't like about Rainbow Curse was I had to always look down on the gamepad (for obvious reasons) and never look at the tv. The game looks gorgeous on the TV, just not so much on an SD gamepad screen.
I want to start collecting for Gamecube but my tv doesn't have an S-video input. should I just buy a Wii, get all the games and get the game cube later or is there some kind of converter that I could use for S-video to VGA or s-video to HDMI. I've been looking for if such a thing exists, but I can't find one.
Yeah I'm Gonna say that the Wii U is the best Nintendo console ever(this is just an opinion) First of all Almost total backwards compatibility Free Online experience Multiple controller Options(Upad, Wii, Gamecube, 3ds, Pro controllers, 3rd party) Best Exclusives of the 8th Generations Nintendo's first True 1080p graphics and probably the best Nintendo experience you can get(I mean you can play with Gamecube controllers, play Wii Games on the Wii U, The Upad is such innovation, you can download old Nintendo game's thru E-shop store, best graphics that Nintendo has had had, and a great 1st party Line-up, Ect) You play on the Upad screen while someone else seen something on your Tv and Cheaper than the Competition
Agree with the fun and joy gained from playing the WiiU. I bought it back in February (first ever personal Nintendo console, not handheld. I have not regretted this decision once. Nintendo does such a good job at making captivating games that get that wonder pumping through your veins. The only other console which did that for me the same way was the Dreamcast, I was 7 when I owned it in 2000, but that shit blew my mind every time I played. The PS2 hardly ever got the same feeling gong for myself, PS3 was amazing until around 2012 I got into Trophies (not compatible with OCD) which started making games feel like a chore. The freaking Wii U, since the purchase, Smash4, Mario Kart, Windwaker HD, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, Shovel Knight (which feels way better with the Nintendo DPad) DK Country Tropical Freeze, Yoshis Wooly World, Splatoon, Mario Maker, Monster Hunter 3. I'm so excited for Xenoblades, I haven't been excited for a game since Red Dead... I don't even pick up games Day One since RDR because I don't give two shits, but I woke up for 7am for Mario Maker, gonna do the same for Xenoblades. Even the virtual console (although pricey) is a great place to catch up on stuff I missed out on. There's so much to this console and fuck... you're right... the feeling is way too familiar to the Dreamcast. I was far too young at the time to realize what I had lost, and this time around I am way too aware at the upcoming prospects for this loss. The worst is people saying its for kids, or its games aren't AAA. Sure they may be correct to a degree, but its a way better time than the PS4 (which I've avoided buying because I can't justify spending $400 + $140 on only two games I'm semi interested in)

I love Nintendo, the only thing I ask of them is to just give me a regular controller, the Wii U controller is alright however all I ask is a normal controller that will work across the board with all games on the system, that's it. Great video Adam, I appreciate everything that you do.
+Bo88y Beretta Be warned though, it's not all. Games like Kirby and the Rainbow Curse that require that gamepad functionality obviously can't support it. Games like Mario Kart 8 though, that works.
+Bo88y Beretta Pro Controller is awesome. feels just right on ur hands. the battery life is like 80hrs and it works on most games. I go almost a month or even a month without charging it.
The reason I bought a Wii U was Super Mario Maker. I attended Nintendo World Championshisp, and after watching gameplay of SMM, I knew I had to have a Wii U. I bought one two days later, bundled with Splatoon. I've been having a blast ever since.
Good video! I love my Wii U, it has a fantastic library of games I enjoy like Xenoblade, Splatoon, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Star Fox Zero, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, MK8, Smash, etc..etc. It's my favorite console this generation by a landslide, I hardly ever even play my PS4. I wish it sold better because it really is an awesome console.
Honestly man, people are so stupid... all Nintendo needs to do is make a console that runs at 4k 60 fps, add third party support and make a nice proper controller and BOOM people will defend the shit to the death. Exhibit A: Sony ponies defending the PS4 like their lives depended on it even though this year hasnt exactly been that great for them. They constantly bash the Xbox One even though Xbox has made a shit load of improvements and good exclusives this year.
+MudButtz95 Because 4K is nice and affordable, right? Almost no one even games on PC in 4K with nice settings. Simply saying 4K doesn't mean the games will look good. Making nice looking games in 4K will basically make it a high end PC in a Nintendo case. Worst idea possible. Maybe 1440P.
Nintendo has a history of using the holiday season(on years that don't have a new console) selling consoles better with pre-exsisting games. Many times a new Mario game, be it a platformer or kart game, has released in the summer and end up being a hot seller in the holiday push. It's very possible that Super Mario Maker could be Nintendo's gem this year. It is the game that finally got me to buy the Wii U. The game is good enough had it launched with the system, and the Wii U dawned a different name, the story of the Wii U could've been very different. If you own a Wii U but don't have Super Mario Maker I'm not sure why you own a Nintendo product. I don't own a Wii U, I own a Super Mario Maker Console.
I was still watching the video while writing my first post and had forgot about the TH-cam thing. Had Mario Maker been a launch title it would've taken place prior to the Nintendo strangle hold on TH-cam videos. the shear amount of revenue Nintendo would've made on free advertisement from Mario Maker videos pushing consoles, Nintendo may not have locked down TH-cam.
I love Nintendo but they are the most frustrating gaming company in the world. Their TH-cam ban is freakin' ridiculous and proof that the big wigs up top are no longer in touch with the world and especially with the internet gaming culture.
Let their reluctance to change send them to the brink of ruin. I won't feel sorry for them if they go under. If that happens, Nintendo stuff will be dirt cheap.
all Splatoon dlc is free and there will be console bundles with that game and smash for around $250 at least on black Friday. if there's ever a better time to get a Wii u, it's through that. I got mine a few months ago and still love it.
Question: Do you think that the lack of sales for the Wii U has been affected by the fact it's more "family friendly" games as opposed to the more graphic "shoot 'em up" games on the other systems? I am looking for a system, however, I will never be a hardcore gamer (I'm a bit older than most gamers) and I'm not particularly interested with the FPS games. At this time, I will more likely purchase additional gaming consoles in the future (late 2016, early 2017).
More like respect gained. Nintendo realized Wii u is a failure (in terms of sales and marketing) and their gonna get back up and make a new console. they owned up to their mistakes.

i got the Japanese R.O.B. the other day and he has that classic Famicom color-scheme. They could use it for the NX. One of many problems with the Wii U is that is looks so low profile. They could use faceplates like with the new 3ds.

You're spot-on about Nintendo: still among the best at pure game design but they just don't understand how to market their games in a modern context or proper online integration. Very frustrating to see sometimes.

I am Australian and I walked into my EB Games today and they had a Project Zero limited edition as well as regular editions sitting on the shelf. Clearly we have a very popular game on our hands /s
I haven't played any Mario party games and don't really intend to but I'll eventually get them all for my collection. Yoshi's woolly world is another game I'm looking forward to playing.
I agree with the Nintendo TH-cam issue, it really would/would've helped out a ton. It truly saddens me that the Wii U isn't/didn't live up to nearly the potential it should have.
I'm glad I got onboard with the Wii U, and I'll be holding on to my collection. Otherwise I'll just be re-buying all the stuff years down the road like I am now with other systems

They had 23 launch titles in the US and only a few games popped to peoples minds but not a system seller. Granted some games where good but also some where on the other systems first. 6:20 Sony and Microsoft were working on their next platforms at most 6 months after their 8th gen platforms. And so was Nintendo. Nintendo said in 2013 that they were already thinking about their next console.
Great video. I can see the Wii U becoming more popular in the future once the console is officially dropped by Nintendo and they release their new console. I can see it becoming another Sega Saturn or Sega Dreamcast like you mentioned. I picked up a Wii U a few years ago and I have enjoyed owning it. I wasn't expecting a console that would rival the PS4 or Xbox One when i bought it. I bought it for the exclusive first party Nintendo titles that i enjoy playing. Super Mario 3D World was really fun title and great entry in the Mario series. I enjoyed the New Super Mario Bros U/Super Luigi U. It was great sequel to the Mario bros on the Wii. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze was great but I really would have liked to see them bring back K rool and the Kremlings. It just didn't work as well for me when you think about the original 3 titles on the SNES. I would recommend getting the Wii U as a companion console to either the PS4 or Xbox One.
I don't know if this is just me...but I feel like the screen is cutoff by something in the top left corner. Just sayin I have never seen that before, but was just weird.
I was really close to picking up a Wii U till I heard about NX and its speculated soon to be released theories. I probably will still get it but with all the NX chatter I will probably hold off at least another year. Adam nailed it when he said the Wii U could have taken off with Mario Maker if its TH-cam policies weren't horrific.
Once the new year comes, I'm gonna get serious about collecting Wii U games. It's only gonna be more expensive from here on out. Great video as always BTW.
Oh yeah, Nintendo's website has refurbished Wii Us for $200 on their website. My friend owns one and it's practically new. I'd really recommend it for people who want to save money on it.
Your prediction for the Wii U in 2016 is that it's going to grind to a halt but that's not going to happen. That's more like 2017, but 2016 will be just fine as Nintendo is not going to pull a transition like they did the Wii to Wii U with roughly a year with no big games aside from Skyward Sword. Q1 of 2016 is already looking better for the Wii U than Q1 of this year, especially on the exclusives front. Mighty No. 9 - Feb Lost Reavers - Feb Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games - Feb Twilight Princess HD - March Starfox Zero - April Pokken Tournament - Spring (hopefully May) Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem - Spring (prob be pushed to Q2 though) Pikmin 4 (TBA) Project Guard (TBA) Zelda Wii U (TBA) Aside from third-parties, that so far is hardly grinding to a halt as all we got retail in Q1 of this year was Kirby and Mario Party. I think Twilight Princess HD and Starfox Zero are much more anticipated/exciting then those games, coupled with smaller tier releases in Mighy No. 9, Lost Reavers, and Mario and Sonic at the Rio Olympic games. Mario Maker and Hyrule Warriors will also get DLC early next year. So if 2016 is the final year the Wii U gets supported, wouldn't you consider that line-up to be better than the Wii's final year of 2012 leading up to the Wii U? So again, 2016 will be fine, 2017 is when first-party support will halt.

Essentially, there will be less and less releases in anticipation of the NX. That's different from having a bunch of releases to suddenly they don't make any more. Its amazing how similar the Saturn and WiiU are. From only being supported by (good) 1st party titles, to the sparse last year, to the Not Our Future style quote. As Saturn fans we even had the same problem getting good JPN titles over here (Fatal Frame 5 not getting a physical release as an example). Hopefully Xenoblade and StarFox end up being gems, Id like WiiU to have a Shining Force/Panzer Saga/Burning Rangers type finish as well.
I started watching Adam's videos when he made his first Wii U retrospective video. Revisiting his videos years later, I'm always so impressed by his usually very accurate predictions. I was still in middle school back then, now I'm studying at University. Even so, Adam keeps making high quality, entertaining and informative content, year after year. Most importantly, he's consistent and you can tell that he really cares and knows what he's talking about. Thinking back, I think Adam's discussions stuck with me from middle school and really ignited my interest and love of game collecting. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for doing what you do!

I remember having a Gamecube as a kid and at the time I liked it but I ended up getting a PS2 also to play games like Star Wars Battlefront, God of War, GTA San Andreas and Onimusha. Looking back, I wish I had continued to expand my Gamecube collection and picked up some of the rarer games like Gotcha Force, Baten Kaitos, Lost Kingdoms, Skies of Arcadia, etc.

+GH0ST250 That is so right. If they released Mario Maker rather than just the basic New Super Mario Bros. U, which was pretty much a standard Mario experience, then I know that I would have easily have played the Wii U so much longer after launch, whereas as it was I played it for a week or two, then went back to the Xbox 360 for a few of months until Lego City Undercover came out, played that for a week or two till I finished it and then I didn't even turn on the Wii U for over a year, literally April 2013 I had finished Lego City Undercover and the next game I bought for the Wii U was Bayonetta 1 & 2, and that didn't come out until October 24th 2014. If I had Mario Maker I would easily have been engrossed more in the Wii U in the early stages and maybe would have bought more games, although looking back at the early releases there really weren't many great releases, the multiplatform games were mostly games that had already been released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 and the early exclusives were quite lacklustre in comparison to the line-up after Bayonetta 2 was released with just Mario, Zelda WW and Monster hunter being any good, but I have only recently actually played those Zelda and Monster Hunter.

I've been comparing Iwata admitting NX is being worked on to Saturn Is Not Our Future since the moment he said it. Sure, everyone knows that new consoles start development the second the older one is released, sometimes earlier, but when you start talking about the new one, it kinda sends the message that the new one is coming soon.
+Indy The Great Personally that is true and I agree with that 100%. But for me what really was the last nail in the coffin for me was the Terrible E3 2015 presentation with there Nintendo direct and the fact that the games that they showed off where the games that they announced for other E3's prior to that minus a few games here and there the only two games that i got pump for at E3 2015 where Yokai Watch and Super Mario Maker even though I am almost 21 by the time this comment is posted. And another nail in the coffin that was nailed for me was when Nintendo's new president Tatsumi Kimishima said "I knew that the Wii U would fall" that to me translates to what Bernie Stolar said Back 18 years ago at E3 1997 "the Saturn is not our future" more fluently than back in March of this year 2015 because it sound more strait forward to me.
+Indy The Great I would go so far as to push the release of the NX to at least Holiday 2017. The difference between Stolar in 1997 and Iwata in 2015 was that Stolar got on stage, at E3, right where you're supposed to sell your stuff the hardest, and willingly admitted the loss of support to the Saturn, while Iwata basically was forced to admit the existence of the NX in an investor meeting, because to do otherwise could easily lead to even worse rumours. Add to that that we probably won't hear an official peep about the NX until E3 2016, which tends to start off a year of hype-building until actual release. A year, not a couple months. Finally, many developers only recently got kits for the NX recently, which they're supposedly suspected to use to build a whole game from scratch. Could they do that in a year? Probably not.
+Lord Beerus The WiiU (and most likely their next console) don't use x86_64 architecture but a custom PowerPC one made specifically for the GameCube. They need this in order to not break the hardware retrocompatibility and is one of the reasons that studios have so much problem porting existing games or creating new ones.
+Aaron Hazelton Stolar did not admit that "the Saturn is not our future" on the E3 stage. It was an interview that happened with EGM off-stage. Still, his statement did not change the sales numbers for the Saturn, as the average consumer had no idea about what was going on with Sega and the Saturn.

People who aren't as passionate about gaming won't waste too much time researching these things, it's Nintendo's job to make it easy for everyone to understand what their product is, what it does and how it differs from previous products and the competition. They failed horribly outside of Japan to get any of these points across to the casual gamer.
The Wii U has been one of my best selling consoles since Mario Maker came out. I tell parents that you can download levels online so it never end, that it builds creativity because you can make your own levels and it has the nostalgia of classic Mario and they usually end up buying one. There will be a lot of kids getting a Wii U in Vegas this Christmas.
I always watch you in 480P. So it feels like VGA on the Dreamcast.

Likely not for multiple reasons.
- PowerPC, the Wii U's architecture is dying.
- PowerPC is also not handheld-friendly. This is bad because Nintendo wants a shared architecture across the board.

AdamKoralik That'd still require the PowerPC architecture, something that doesn't work very well on handhelds. And while Nintendo's software programmers are talented, they aren't on Microsoft's level to the point where they can get backwards compatibility to work with ARM (the likely architecture for the NX Platform across the board).

Mario maker really could have saved wii u. I checked a streamer playing the game, and I just got hooked. I watched his every stream for two weeks, to the point where I had no choice but to get it. So I bought a Wii U and Mario Maker. Not a bundle by the way, so I practically pay 350€ for a single game. And I did it well knowing about NX, and that Wii U had only a year left.
That's how good of a system seller it is. It made me buy my first new game console ever. If I had just waited a year, I could have saved a lot of money. But I just NEEDED it right away. Had it launched earlier, even as a launch title, and marketed properly without new console looming in the horizon, it could have made people buy the console. Now I guess it is too late to make a considerable difference any more...

Yeah... People keep on saying that Mario is the same game but no. Every single major Mario game has released the right game for the right era.
What Nintendo needs to do is clearly define what era this is and where video games are going with every console, and say, "We're already way ahead of you. Here's this thing you never knew you needed. We love it and we hope you'll love it too."

Had to rewatch this video in light of the recent release of Super Mario Maker 2. I'm curious as to how this game will turn out this time and how Nintendo will handle the online situation.
I own a Wii U, but when I look at my Xbox One and PC, I have very little reason to use the Wii U system outside of Nintendo games.
They need a better online system, more third-party support and overall need to consider dropping their "kid-friendly" UI scheme.

I'm going to get a wii u for Christmas it's the only console of this generation of console that I'm willing to get and that's because I really want to play supermario maker and all the other supermario games out for this system. I'm actually excited about getting the supermario maker game and I haven't been this excited about getting a console and game since the n64 and supermario 64 and Star Wars episode one racer which are two of my favourite games of all time so far. I haven't played many sega Dreamcast games because I just got my first one last week and only got five games and they are all rpg's which aren't my favourite games to play but the ones I got with the Dreamcast are really great. Adam could you recommend some Dreamcast games that are really good and not rpg's so I can get some good smups and fighters to play .

There's Ikaruga. There's a bit of slowdown for the Dreamcast version. This isn't a bad thing though. I've heard that the GameCube version isn't playable for a lot of people because when things get too chaotic, that slowdown helps them out a lot.
It seems to be a signature of Treasure's games. They push every single hardware that they are on to it's limit. It truly is the most beautifully done shoot 'em up I have ever played and I play a ton.
Soul Calibur, Street Fighter III: Third Strike and Power Stone all must haves. Best 3D fighter at the time, won a ton of awards and even greatest game of all time from some video game websites. Third Strike is the most fluid 2D fighter. It's a little technique heavy but if you've got the reflexes for it you can turn the tide of any battle. Good luck getting Power Stone. I dunno what it goes for nowadays but it's probably a lot.

I think the most precise word to describe the Wii U is "disappointment" in general. Don't get me wrong, it has really good games, but you can count them with your hands. A lot of missed oportunities and posibilities with the gamepad but, it just seems that Nintendo realized too late all the flaws of their design.

It's because you get an average of 1 retail AAA game every 1 or 2 months, which it's not bad, but half of them turn to be disappointing it the sense they don't justify the $60 tag or are a complete waste of time and money because you can get better a better experience in older platforms (i.e. Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival). Also total disappoint for expected titles like Metroid or F-Zero that we know at this given point of time they aren't coming for Wii U. Sorry, but that's how i feel with my Wii U, it's the perfect example of missed opportunities.

Something that I didn't like about Rainbow Curse was I had to always look down on the gamepad (for obvious reasons) and never look at the tv. The game looks gorgeous on the TV, just not so much on an SD gamepad screen.

I want to start collecting for Gamecube but my tv doesn't have an S-video input. should I just buy a Wii, get all the games and get the game cube later or is there some kind of converter that I could use for S-video to VGA or s-video to HDMI. I've been looking for if such a thing exists, but I can't find one.

Agree with the fun and joy gained from playing the WiiU. I bought it back in February (first ever personal Nintendo console, not handheld. I have not regretted this decision once.
Nintendo does such a good job at making captivating games that get that wonder pumping through your veins. The only other console which did that for me the same way was the Dreamcast, I was 7 when I owned it in 2000, but that shit blew my mind every time I played. The PS2 hardly ever got the same feeling gong for myself, PS3 was amazing until around 2012 I got into Trophies (not compatible with OCD) which started making games feel like a chore.
The freaking Wii U, since the purchase, Smash4, Mario Kart, Windwaker HD, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, Shovel Knight (which feels way better with the Nintendo DPad) DK Country Tropical Freeze, Yoshis Wooly World, Splatoon, Mario Maker, Monster Hunter 3. I'm so excited for Xenoblades, I haven't been excited for a game since Red Dead... I don't even pick up games Day One since RDR because I don't give two shits, but I woke up for 7am for Mario Maker, gonna do the same for Xenoblades. Even the virtual console (although pricey) is a great place to catch up on stuff I missed out on.
There's so much to this console and fuck... you're right... the feeling is way too familiar to the Dreamcast. I was far too young at the time to realize what I had lost, and this time around I am way too aware at the upcoming prospects for this loss. The worst is people saying its for kids, or its games aren't AAA. Sure they may be correct to a degree, but its a way better time than the PS4 (which I've avoided buying because I can't justify spending $400 + $140 on only two games I'm semi interested in)

I love Nintendo, the only thing I ask of them is to just give me a regular controller, the Wii U controller is alright however all I ask is a normal controller that will work across the board with all games on the system, that's it. Great video Adam, I appreciate everything that you do.

+Bo88y Beretta Be warned though, it's not all. Games like Kirby and the Rainbow Curse that require that gamepad functionality obviously can't support it. Games like Mario Kart 8 though, that works.

The reason I bought a Wii U was Super Mario Maker.
I attended Nintendo World Championshisp, and after watching gameplay of SMM, I knew I had to have a Wii U. I bought one two days later, bundled with Splatoon. I've been having a blast ever since.
I think 2016 will be a good year for the Wii U, for gaming in general too.

I love my Wii U, it has a fantastic library of games I enjoy like Xenoblade, Splatoon, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Star Fox Zero, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, MK8, Smash, etc..etc. It's my favorite console this generation by a landslide, I hardly ever even play my PS4. I wish it sold better because it really is an awesome console.
Honestly man, people are so stupid... all Nintendo needs to do is make a console that runs at 4k 60 fps, add third party support and make a nice proper controller and BOOM people will defend the shit to the death.

Nintendo has a history of using the holiday season(on years that don't have a new console) selling consoles better with pre-exsisting games. Many times a new Mario game, be it a platformer or kart game, has released in the summer and end up being a hot seller in the holiday push. It's very possible that Super Mario Maker could be Nintendo's gem this year. It is the game that finally got me to buy the Wii U. The game is good enough had it launched with the system, and the Wii U dawned a different name, the story of the Wii U could've been very different. If you own a Wii U but don't have Super Mario Maker I'm not sure why you own a Nintendo product. I don't own a Wii U, I own a Super Mario Maker Console.
I was still watching the video while writing my first post and had forgot about the TH-cam thing. Had Mario Maker been a launch title it would've taken place prior to the Nintendo strangle hold on TH-cam videos. the shear amount of revenue Nintendo would've made on free advertisement from Mario Maker videos pushing consoles, Nintendo may not have locked down TH-cam.

all Splatoon dlc is free and there will be console bundles with that game and smash for around $250 at least on black Friday. if there's ever a better time to get a Wii u, it's through that. I got mine a few months ago and still love it.

Question: Do you think that the lack of sales for the Wii U has been affected by the fact it's more "family friendly" games as opposed to the more graphic "shoot 'em up" games on the other systems? I am looking for a system, however, I will never be a hardcore gamer (I'm a bit older than most gamers) and I'm not particularly interested with the FPS games. At this time, I will more likely purchase additional gaming consoles in the future (late 2016, early 2017).

i got the Japanese R.O.B. the other day and he has that classic Famicom color-scheme. They could use it for the NX. One of many problems with the Wii U is that is looks so low profile. They could use faceplates like with the new 3ds.

Sony and Microsoft were working on their next platforms at most 6 months after their 8th gen platforms. And so was Nintendo. Nintendo said in 2013 that they were already thinking about their next console.

Great video. I can see the Wii U becoming more popular in the future once the console is officially dropped by Nintendo and they release their new console. I can see it becoming another Sega Saturn or Sega Dreamcast like you mentioned. I picked up a Wii U a few years ago and I have enjoyed owning it. I wasn't expecting a console that would rival the PS4 or Xbox One when i bought it.
I bought it for the exclusive first party Nintendo titles that i enjoy playing. Super Mario 3D World was really fun title and great entry in the Mario series. I enjoyed the New Super Mario Bros U/Super Luigi U. It was great sequel to the Mario bros on the Wii. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze was great but I really would have liked to see them bring back K rool and the Kremlings. It just didn't work as well for me when you think about the original 3 titles on the SNES. I would recommend getting the Wii U as a companion console to either the PS4 or Xbox One.

I was really close to picking up a Wii U till I heard about NX and its speculated soon to be released theories. I probably will still get it but with all the NX chatter I will probably hold off at least another year. Adam nailed it when he said the Wii U could have taken off with Mario Maker if its TH-cam policies weren't horrific.
Once the new year comes, I'm gonna get serious about collecting Wii U games. It's only gonna be more expensive from here on out. Great video as always BTW.

Your prediction for the Wii U in 2016 is that it's going to grind to a halt
but that's not going to happen. That's more like 2017, but 2016 will be just fine
as Nintendo is not going to pull a transition like they did the Wii to Wii U with
roughly a year with no big games aside from Skyward Sword.
Q1 of 2016 is already looking better for the Wii U than Q1 of this year, especially
on the exclusives front.

Aside from third-parties, that so far is hardly grinding to a halt as all we got retail
in Q1 of this year was Kirby and Mario Party. I think Twilight Princess HD and
Starfox Zero are much more anticipated/exciting then those games, coupled
with smaller tier releases in Mighy No. 9, Lost Reavers, and Mario and Sonic at
the Rio Olympic games.
Mario Maker and Hyrule Warriors will also get DLC early next year.
So if 2016 is the final year the Wii U gets supported, wouldn't you consider
that line-up to be better than the Wii's final year of 2012 leading up to
the Wii U?
So again, 2016 will be fine, 2017 is when first-party support will halt.
+Bret Donohue I think you misunderstand. I didn't say it would grind to a halt and just stop in 2016, I said it would slow down and fade. Essentially, there will be less and less releases in anticipation of the NX. That's different from having a bunch of releases to suddenly they don't make any more. Or so I'm guessing that's how it will play out.
I agree the beginning of 2016 will likely be great, but it seems like they'll bury it shortly after they get all these already-in-development titles out the door. Though, I hope I'm wrong.
Its amazing how similar the Saturn and WiiU are. From only being supported by (good) 1st party titles, to the sparse last year, to the Not Our Future style quote. As Saturn fans we even had the same problem getting good JPN titles over here (Fatal Frame 5 not getting a physical release as an example). Hopefully Xenoblade and StarFox end up being gems, Id like WiiU to have a Shining Force/Panzer Saga/Burning Rangers type finish as well.
