In Iran, we also give frankincense as a gift to pregnant women. We believe it will make their child more intelligent. I always wondered if that's the reason why the Magis gifted frankincense to baby Jesus.

Myrrh is used widely in many Indian rituals. It is used for cleansing and invoking the higher energies. During my childhood I remember my parents burning myrrh in the evening. Now burning myrrh in the households is kind of a 'dead ritual'. Not many people burn it at home, except in special occasions or ritual purpose. But I am glad that I still burn myrrh. I just LOOOOVE that fragrance.... Sooo Divinely pleasant and warm.... 💕❤️

It should be noted that, especially in the context of this time and place, frankincense and myrrh were used in the incense offered in the Holy Temple (see Ex. 30:34 and B.T. Keritot 6a). I can't help but conclude that since these were regular offerings to God, that would have resonated with the Jewish audience of the time.

The quintessential background for understanding the magi's gifts in Matthew 2 is Isaiah 60.6. Couple that verse with Psalm 72.10-11 to see why Christians came to see the magi as kings.

Have I missed something? Mentioned (at around the 1:30 mark) was that pagans offered sacrifices to the gods and that Christians were forbidden to do so. No mention whatsoever was made of Judaism and offerings made to Yahweh. As a Christian who has read the Old Testament, I'm a little perplexed.

    • @KDawgKy

Stephen Gibson sacrifices were allowed in the Old Testament under the Law. Jesus gave his life on the cross as a sacrifice to bare the sins for us which negated the old covenant Law. Under the New Covenant, sacrifices are no longer required and is a sin in doing so. Pagans continued the practice of sacrifices because they do not believe in the Heavenly Father and that he sent his son to die on the cross, was buried, and resurrected in three day’s.

I only know what pomegranates are cuz I bought cashews flavored with them the other day. At the walgreens. While waiting in line. That's how I learn stuff these days.

For future reference, the plural of *genus* is *genera*, not "genuses." Everything else was still very informative!

that's actually a really cool fact.

Actually not true. English allows both forms as equally correct.
You see, "genuses" is the English plural form, "genera" the Latin plural, and both are OK. In the English language loanwords are allowed to retain their original language plurals, spellings, etc, but that doesnt mean they become primary, just equally valid.
I would actually RECOMMEND the English plural in most cases. Cactuses and funguses are much less annoying.

...Also, a lot of people are unaware BACTERIA is a plural, NOT a singular.
ONE BACTERIUM is a single cell (or maybe we are talking about a single species).
THESE BACTERIA are a group or population of cells (or a set of species).
This is because Latin neutral gender words (-um) get this plural ending (-a).
The English plural form ("bacteriumS" in this case) has gone extinct.

@@LexProntera I'd argue that "bacteria" has two forms: an uncountable noun referring to the organisms themselves, and a countable noun that refers to the type of an organism.
