  • Willys Jeep 4 speed swap! It’s time to upgrade from a 3 speed to a 4 speed in the old Willys CJ3B. Deeper gears means a lower crawl ratio and more control on the trails. These swaps have been happening it flat fenders for decades. It will be a lot of time and effort to do this swap but the final result will be worth it all!

    I have thought about this swap for years, so I am really looking forward to watching you do it. Now while you have the tub off makes sense. Thanks for making these great videos!

    I have used both T-18s and SM420s in Jeeps and PUs. Both worked out fantastic. I also put an SM420 behind a Buick V6 in a Nissan 720 4x4 PU-- again that Grandma gear is very useful. I have run both mated and divorced T-cases. I would collect these transmissions and had a combination of SM420s and T-18s stored in my shed. When living among loggers in Idaho, Dana 20 T cases were eazy to find because Loggers would put FS Ford running gear under their Jeep PUs-- and toss the Jeep gear boxes.
    But with age there came a point where I sold them all -- and the buyers were sure happy to find one. I had an aray of vehicles that were Buick V6 powered-- with granny Trannies--- just fun to build!

    Aw, dude!! When I saw the 4-speed swap in the description, I thought you were gonna do the M-21 Muncie swap like I did so you could go racin' people on Friday nights! Haha, I'm just kidding...we are on different ends of the spectrum with what we want to do with our Jeeps. My little dauntless/ M21 is just a street cruiser. I think your idea is great for what you want to do. It's fun researching stuff to swap things into out old CJ's, isn't it!! I love it...keep up the good work Jacob. And you are absolutely right...the tub is off, now is the time to upgrade the trans!! MUCH easier that way.

      I swapped ford toploaders behind Buick V6s back in the 1980s--- super-strong transmissions that shift smoothly. Back in the day a Pacific Northwest machinist at now gone Hoosier Machine Works in Pendelton Oregon created main shafts and adapters for Ford Toploaders to D18/-20 Jeep Transfer cases.

    I can't wait to see all the technical stuff with this swap, I think it's cool to mix and match different drivetrain pieces to make the Jeep fit your purpose!
    I have an SM465 in my CJ-7 and really like the 6.5:1 low range, I put the 4:1 tera-low gears in the Dana 300, with 4:11 gears I'm right around 100:1 crawl ratio.
    Still somehow manage to break axle parts though haha 😄 🤦

      You can still find an SM420---they often work for a million miles. There is a bellhousing used in Jeepsters especially for a T18. You likely have to modify your driveshafts too. And there were a few Jeepsters that had the Bell housing/T-18 and Dana18 from the factory. These can still be salvaged, but very rare at this point in history.

    • @stevenredinger9972
      @stevenredinger9972 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SevenBarSalvage Yep-- on the SM420 or 465, the shifter is so far forward it comes out under the dash. On the SM420 I would bend the shifter and hold the shifter with a large soft spring so it would not bang around-. This is not a new problem when doing tranny swaps-- for example, when swapping to a Ford top loader, the shifter emerged behind the driver's heal in the Jeep conversion--so the shifter bar would need to be long and modified. A T-18 shifter further back on the transmission is not so problematic. Those with GM engines in their Jeeps used to go with an SM420-- and more recently 465--- Ford V8 folks a T-18. Again it is possible to find a bell housing for a Buick V6 for a T-98 or T-18

      @@stevenredinger9972 Thanks for the info. I waited 6 months for a bellhousing from Advanced Adapter. I finally had my original V6 bellhousing and the 465 input shaft retainer machined to fit. The 465 plus d18 Aadapter added 2 1/2" so both drive shafts had to be changed.

      In the early 2000s in the Large wreaking and scrap yards in Denver Colorado, I would come across SM420s and divorced T-cases often. I also came across a number of Jeepsters with T-98s and one or two with T-18s factory equipt. I used to buy old T-98 or T-18s for 50 dollars--- and from salvage yards that dealt in scap-- SM420s for the price of scrap. That was twenty years ago, however. Any Granny Tranny is a wonderful addition to an early Flat Fender Jeep---the crawl ratio is fantastic-- make a Jeep into a tractor, Great for navigation among large rocks and very rutty trails.

    Sadly soon all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
    In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
    on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!!! (BABBVEN LAWS AND TEBBVEN ORDERS)!!!!!!!!

    3speeds suck

    • @stevenredinger9972
      @stevenredinger9972 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they are OK, but a Jeep needs a granny gear.
      A T-90 really just has one gear--- and that is second gear. In third or high the main shaft just locks up and it is straight through. Second gear shifts on synchros. Then the main shaft disengages and a flat cut star gear can engage for first and reverse. They are super simple gear boxes-- and cheap to manufacture and maintain. The next generation of transmissions that had three actual ratios are far more complex and much more expensive to manufacture. A farmer with feeler gauges can disassemble a T-90 and repair it--and reassemble it on a barn workbench. Even old Willys cars and Ramblers used versions of the T-90 that were cheap to manufacture but worked to drive a car on a roadway. A 4x4 with low gears is still another matter-- or a heavy truck that needs more gear ratios.
