I really like the titanium with gold trim. It reminds me of a lot of Parker pens like the Jotter or the Parker 45. That said I would go with your gut and anodize it! I'm sure it will look fantastic.
Hi DB! First things, first. . .anodize that sucker!! Will be so interesting then! What would have been a nice color scheme for that pen would have to used a blued finish on the furniture! Blue and gold two tone nib! After all, the ink windows are blue. The section also would look very nice in a blued finish. I have been a fan of XXF to F nibs for a LONG time. A really good one is a PLEASURE to write with. I recently bought my first broad nibbed pen, and, while its OK, I don't enjoy it as much as a good F or XF. Thank you for showing the Ti version of this pen, and PLEASE share with us how you anodize the pen.
I initially thought the same about the gold trim, but now that I've seen it in more detail I think it's really nice, very 50s and 60s flighter pens 👍 And no, you've already anodized lots of things, this one looks better as it is... But, it's your pen, do whatever you like with it, you don't have to ask anybody 🤣
I agree with you about the gold trim. It makes the pen look cheap or maybe garish. I’d like to see it with a matte black trim and nib. Don’t expect to see that though. Thanks for the excellent review.
Hello Mr Budd, yes please, please anodise the pen, it would look beautiful if you can get the colours of the anodising to be purple and gold, the gold being the operative idea to match the trim. Smiles c: Chelsea
I think the titanum and gold looks ok. But if it needs to look better you should make it black. Breferably matte black. Also the nib matte black. And put in it platinum Chuo Kuro ink for ultimate blackness.
With titanium a piston o-ring might not be needed if the internals have been suitably surfaced treated, for low temperature applications a plastic piston in a material like UHMWPE or Polyester is a perfect combination with titanium, even better if the titanium has been nitrided.
Interesting pen. I agree that the gold trim doesn't really work well. As to the ink in the threads: my trick is to use a toothpick. Works wonders too if some ink dried up between the threads or some dirty gets in there.
Titanium and silver/rhodium/titanium furniture would be better. But! for the price, it's pretty damn good! And I'd take the hammered finish because it's unique. This one is going on the list.
It would be interesting to know what grade of titanium this is, the ageing characteristics and cost change dramatically with the different grades. I suspect it will be Grade 5 rather than Grade 2, it won't be Grade 1 which is typically only used in scientific applications. Sometimes alloys can become available cheaply because they have a contaminant in the alloy. Grade 5 can be anodised to produce a range of colours, but controlling the result is not so easy, the result will depend on the extra alloy.
Maybe I'm unlucky but all three of the Chinese pens I've bought have needed nib adjustment as they were too dry (all really tight tines). One was the Hongdian M2 (F) which I got from 365Days Stationary (will buy more from them in future) as well as a Hongdian Black Forest (M) and a Moonman S1 (EF) that someone was onselling. I suspect the person onselling the Moonman was getting rid of it because it wouldn't write - it didn't take much adjustment and my spouse is now happily using it. None of my Japanese or German pens so far have needed adjustment but I have also never tried Chinese inks. I have wondered if perhaps the Chinese pens are intentionally dry and would pair better with a Chinese ink or at least a really wet ink. Or maybe I'm just unlucky lol.
If it's all titanium, the gold is ideal as it's probably titanium nitrided like a drill bit rather than some other plating, you could have the gold as a transition layer rather than a thin coating.
Of course we'll watch an anodizing. But it would also be cool to see if you can do something like electroplating or stripping the gold trim to get a different look. A cobalt blue would look pretty cool on that.
Just saw Nahvalur just released a retractable fountain pen as well. WIll be looking forward to your review of it. I'm pretty sure it comes with 5 colors and trim options and they are made out of aluminum.
@@Doodlebud Should be a good review. Happy they actually Offer a medium as well. Hopefully if it's a good pen and sells good they add stubs and broads to the mix.
Agree with you about the choice of the golden trim and clip. but anyway the pen is way to expensive for what it is. and it doesn't post, that's a no strait away for me. I still haven´t buy the Majohn P136 because it doesn´t post, for sure at this price range it's not a pen I will buy. at half this price I might consider it, if they switch the color of the trim and the clip.
For a machined titanium piston fill pen featuring an ink window with a #6 nib, this is very well priced. I don't know of any pens with all those features for anything close to this price.
Regarding you comment/critique on the piston seal: There is NEVER an O-Ring on the seal. Check Pelikan, TWSBI, Montblanc, Lamy ... pretty much any maker. No O-Rings on the piston seal.
I have one of her pens she sent be blank and I just happened to get a new laser that can do that type of laser engraving. I contacted her and she's going to help me do one of her laser jobs on the pen using my new laser! There will be anodizing too
I love Titanium pens. I am a bit shocked about the price. You can get a silver nib which would look better. The EF and F nibs are no longer available. Also the P136 wrench may not fit as the wrench is made of a thick brass. Can you unscrew the nib and feed assembly? Maintenance of the pen is key for me, especially at this price point. Very good review and certainly worth considering. I only wish the EF nib was still available 😔.
I'd like to ask your advice on a pen repair. I was given a Monteverde Catalina, and I dropped it on my unforgiving kitchen floor. Fortunately, it was capped, but the "cap on the cap" snapped off. I'm holding it together with scotch tape for now. What's the best glue to use? I have pretty good access to not only things like Gorilla Glue but also specialized hobby glues, for things like model trains and whatnot.
Do you know if the Bock nib has a Bock housing or did they just put the nib on the Majohn feed/housing? I ask because I have some Bock housings with BB nibs I would like to use. Thanks.
With silver trim and clear, uncolored ink window I would run for my credit card. The way it is I have to keep thinking. One question, Do jowo or bock nibs work as replacement for the Mahjon/Moonman nib. I do not want spend the money for gold Bock nib, but I also have a lof good Jowo and Bock steel nibs and usully prefer then over the chinese ones.
I haven't tried swapping those 1:1 yet but I think I've seen other YT folks do vids like that. Give a look around to see what you can find on the topic
@@Doodlebud Thanks for the reply. I will watch out for more info about this. With Chinese pens it used to be a nib lottery and therefore I prefer to have options to swap. In general I think Mahjong is onto something with this model. I hope now for trim and color variations that would make this perfect.
I have long, thin fingers (wear large size gloves), much like you- I think. While I like the P136 (gave one away and rebought one for myself), I find the section to be too thin, so I’ll pass on the titanium version. But even with my “large” hands, I am still nonplussed as to why others feel the need to post. Most fountain pen manufacturers, especially the CEO of Diplomat, discourage posting because the pens are balanced and designed to be used unposted- the exception, of course, being pocket pens.
I like the gold and Titanium, but really don't like the blue. I don't write with blue, but with that window I think it's the only thing really working well with the pen, so the blue window basically made this amazing pen a non starter for me. Super sad about that!
I'll pull out my old Ti-85 for that. But there's a better way than solving endless DEs. This guy was pumped to find out> th-cam.com/video/65yw9klPklk/w-d-xo.html
I am baffled with the idea that they would remake the pen in titanium but not make the tiny adjustment to allow the cap to post. It's not rocket science. I have an acrylic p136 that I dropped, broke, repaired and now it does post, and I like it a lot but I won't be buying another, titanium or acrylic. Mystified. Posting is a simple design decision.
To open the tines it is better to take the nib out and pess it to lower it curvature, normally it open the tines without flexing. I notice your plastic pen show a little bent up nib. Pressing the sholders of the nib has the oposit effect, it dries the pen.
I love the titanium and gold look. I'm really curious to see how it'll look anodized!
Maybe a dusty mauve-purple would look good
Imagine if the pen was anodised purple and gold, especially gold to match that trim.
I really like the titanium with gold trim. It reminds me of a lot of Parker pens like the Jotter or the Parker 45. That said I would go with your gut and anodize it! I'm sure it will look fantastic.
Yup like I said some will love the gold trim look. Does have more of that older classic look to it with the gold trim
I like it too the colors work well. Walk into a jewelry store and look at wedding rings you will see this color combo on many rings.
hammering version looks relly cool
i absolutely want to see the video of you anodizing this pen!
I just ordered one, I actually really like the gold trim. I think it looks good
thank you for the review, especially the comparison between the two!
Yes looking forward seeing you anodizing that beauty. 😊
Wow, the hammered version is absolutely beautiful. It must require some labor, too, because it’s nearly double the price.
