Some commenters believe this is a novel/"concept" design - but it's actually a very old Japanese design (like the C4 and the Q1). They're called "yatate" pens. The fountain pen yatate is a 'modernization' of the original brush pen version. I love that Majohn is taking these mechanisms/designs and bringing them to a wide audience.
@@NameLikeNobodyElse I get my info from Bruno Taut of Crónicas Estilográficas. "It was used by merchants and educated people who had the need to write on the go." " With the apparition of the fountain pen, those traditional “yatate” became obsolete. However, the name was rescued to describe a particular type of fountain pen. On them, the cap is almost as long as the pen itself-nib, section, and barrel. When closed, the pen might look just like a rod of ebonite, but upon opening it, a full size pen show up."
TBH pretty much all pens share similar design queues. But this one is pretty unique and does have some queues from other models that arent too common or have gone out of style. A strange one but a fun one
I wasJUST thinking, why cant any of my pens pour shots??? Ive spent how much with sailor and not one has produced me a single cocktail? Werent they the ones that came out with cocktail themed pens? Thank you majohn for righting this wrong!
Just speculating here, but they might be going for the cigar crowd. I enjoy the occasional cigar and some of them come is glass tubes for preservation and presentation. Just a thought. 🖖😁.
I LOVE this thing. It’s original…very odd… but original. The biggest cap with the smallest clip is a hilarious choice. They make so many functional reasonable pens, I love that they made something ridiculous and fun.
To me, the cap protects the entire pen which I think is quite clever. I’m always nervous that I’ll scratch my L’Amy AlStar but this design you wouldn’t have to worry. I definitely like it. Embrace the uniqueness:)
I think the idea is getting rid of a step down and/or Threads between body and grip section. With the long tube-cap-thing you'll have that out of your hand. And they might have though: now we have a long cap, which is looking weird, why not make it even more weird by counter that with a very short clip?
I guess the clip was inspired by the Sheaffer military clip of the 40s, it was developed as the military required shirt pockets to fold over themselves and not show anything that was in the pocket (more or less it's what I know), but in the end it's just a weird roll stop. But c'mon, they really got their objective and now everybody is talking of this pen 🤣
I have another Majohn that gets ink in it you can’t reach to clean. I leave a little water in it while letting it dry and the water worked it’s way around to the ink and out the pen. It’s left with a tiny residue, I know will be gone with one more “water dry”. Thank you for reviewing the underdogs. While the Chinese are great at cheap copies, the Indians are innovating with stack titanium nibs and other nib variations. Love to see innovation in new or established companies.
I was curious about it and made an assumption "oh I bet this will dry out quick." However, assumptions are just that - a best guess. It wasn't as large as I thought and it seems to seal well. I even see some condensation sometimes so thats a sign of a good seal so I don't think nib dry up will be an issue with this one.
Is different but I think I like it..😊 This is one of your bests videos just because the stoichiometry crash curse. The whole body cap is for floating purposes maybe..

Its just such an odd move from a design point so I had to play around with how is this useful. The shot glass to-go option just earned the pen a few points 🍹
I think this is the same idea as a concept car. It's meant to push design ideas rather than strict functionality. That apple pie looked tasty btw. And for silicone grease, I always use Super Lube brand since you can get a giant tube from just about any auto store. I use it for pens, lights, and just about anything I want sealed.
When your ink bottle is too wide and too low on ink to fill properly? I think it makes sense to pour what little ink is left into the cap and fill the pen that way.
I do like the pen, but after some time I've noticed that evaporating ink can get all the way down to the back (body) of the pen and into the threads as there isn't a seal up by the nib/section. I think a revised version should have a seal up by the nib/section
I see this pen as something an artist make after having an argument with an engineer. Made mainly to be a fashion message. I feel like it's kind similar design to a moonman pen. If that's the case, the butt being a base makes sense.
Well, this pen solves one of my major gripes with Chinese pens- the fact that they are often shameless copies. Interesting + inventive design for sure. I do have an affinity for pens that have a great ink capacity, and this one delivers on that mark as well. Is it a #6 nib? The sleeve cap would make it a good pen to stick in my pocket for when I'm wearing a t shirt rather than the western cut pearl snap shirts that I usually wear. The sleeve cap could take the abuse that my knife/keys/snuff box would otherwise do to the pen barrel (can't have that!). Re: density of alcohol. It is less dense than water, but not by much. As I recall, that Ol' Smokey apple pie raw whisky (I can't comfortably call a taxed spirit "moonshine") has quite a bit of sugar in it, which is likely the cause for the density disparity. As always, great video Doodlebud!
Yeah I was thiniking about the sugar content afterwards taht could have made up the difference. I might have to do another test to see. And then do it 10 more times to have some good data points to go by 🤔🙂🍹
I have the C4 with a similar "clip." I'm guessing a roll stop in the form of their logo, a dripping nib. Looks big enough for a #6 nib to fit well. Yes, I would be one of those who would be annoyed by ink leaking into the cap, thanks for the acknowledgement. Thanks, DB!
Shot glass we had the same idea, in the name of science of course. Conversation piece no doubt about it. Crazy design, hope this starts a war with the competition.
There have been a couple of pens that have had this design. I know of an OMAS, and the MB Moctezuma off the top of my head. It is more of a vintage design I think, as some vintage pens had this same concept. In this case the cap protects the nib + the barrel, so that is a plus.

Hey Doodlebud. I got the Jinhao X159, the dimensions suit my hand perfectly but thanks to your other video on the moonman p136 (I believe?) I'm gonna give the dimensions of a Montblanc 146 a go. I think that's a special purposes pen. I can imagine this on a desk, where a queue of people have to write or sign up something, using this instead of the usual pointing down sign pens, or cord ballpoints, that we had some decades ago. But then again, that would be useful back then, not in today's tech era. Nowadays, i can think of it used mainly in schools, as a student pen, so you just let it uncapped pointing up, during the whole lesson. Btw, i was expecting from you to test, if that big golden part on top is magnetic. That would be a nice feature. Have this pen secured in a metal, it could give it special uses, and extra functionality.
Because science! :D I think the design is interesting but could be improved upon. 1) There should be a spring-loaded inner cap to prevent drying out. 2) Clip seems more like a roll-stop but you did prove that it's almost functional as a clip as well. It would be better with a spring-loaded clip or an Italian style wheeled clip. 3) Better weight distribution could be achieved by further reducing the weight of the knob by making it hollow or using even lighter material like magnesium. On the other end the metal ring at the section should be made heavier by using tungsten. You could use a heavier but still relatively safe metal like uranium as well but that would come with serious export restrictions. I've seen one or two odd pens with similar designs by independent pen makers -- and there's of course the Montblanc Moctezuma.
After using it for a while dry doesnt seem to be an issue. I actually see condensation appear in the cap fairly quick which is indicative of a good seal. Lots of tweaks that can be made but of course there's the trade off with price. The more I've used the pen the more I'm like "yeah ok, its kinda fun to use" Its unique nonetheless.
Hi DB! That is for sure a pretty weird pen! The clip reminds me of one that is on my Sheaffer Tuckaway, which has a LITTLE ITTY BITTY clip. This Majohn is not really my taste, guess that's why I don't have a TWSBI pen, either. Not that fascinated by seeing the innards, I guess.
Great video, thoroughly enjoyed. I have to wonder if there is an adapter piece that turns that tube into an eye-dropper body, but of course you'd need another cap for that. Crazy but interesting. Functions as half a shot glass.. Lol
No adapter piece for that. That would require a HUGE step up to be able to screw the "cap" onto the section of the pen but then like you said, now there's no cap. The volume from the super fill is pretty impressive though
When turning that big metal end cap (no way it could be called a "blind cap") to remove the sleeve, what's the risk of engaging the fill mechanism and winding up with ink all over the place?
I've been searching for a flip-open lid pen case like the one you have here on your video. Can you tell me please, who makes it and where I can get it? Thanks.
I would say it's a great design for traveling. It seems to me that it's a plane decompression prouf pen. I would love to test it actually, but over here I can't find it.
I like it ngl the see through reservoir and a see through pen ...cap uhh... ginormous cap. i understand the confusion but it is aesthetically appealing. i could use a longer clip though
I think im one of the only ones here who likes the uniqueness of it. It works well as a pen, and it has a unique abstract design. It looks like something precious behind a glass bell jar. Capless was weird when it came out, just saying. However i hope there is a version 2, beceause from a design perspective it's s actually a shame that the housing and nib section isn't one piece like the twsbi eco (dont mind the gold rings just the threading).
Ha-ha. That's a lot of engineering work for what I consider a novelty pen. Maybe I'll take a "Shot." 😜....even though those inky finial threads irk me some.
If it was any bit more normal, I'd get one to try it out. I just know I'm not going to like it. Instead, I spent my pen budget on a Jinhao 9019 since they finally got #8 nibs in Medium. I'd like a B or BB if you're going to have that kind of capacity. I'm buying a Chonker of a pen, I want the option for it to write like a marker. Let the Kaweco sport with its Int'l Short handle the EF nib range.
The short clip is so that it will not show in a pocket with a flap that comes down. I believe it comes from military uniforms where they're not allowed a clip to show.
V1 pen is designed in the fashion of the Abditus by Franklin-Christoph. The stowage of the pen is different but there is nothing particularly divergent from a conventional pen. I like the concept of withdrawing the pen from its sheath, much as a sword is withdrawn. Which is mightier? Is the sword in the hands of the obedient like a pen without ink? It makes its mark, but not as intended.
Great review, but my head is spinning at the idea of wearing a dress shirt without a pocket. Is this a BC thing because you don’t need somewhere to put sunglasses???
No idea to be honest. All depends on what kind of extra stuff I decide to do in a video. Playing around with the shot glass random idea and displacement, and super fill added extra time. The editing I just do a little bit here and there when I have time. I do it all on my phone so editing is sometimes done while my kid is in her swim class or stuff like that. 10-15min here and there when I have spare time. This just works for me and my schedule etc. So its tough to actually know how long it takes as its spread out over a while in small segments.
@@Doodlebud oh wow you edit them on. Your phone? I can't imagine doing that on a small phone! Tho mines also pretty old. Thanks for this :) I've been thinking of starting a channel of my own that's why I asked!
Looks a lot like the Franklin Christoph 33 Abditus model to me... Another Chinese copy design... looks like they made some changes and did a good job with the filling mechanism. But I think the FC model will seal and work much better because it would have been designed with more care and thought.
Yup, was thinking the same thing. The Franklin Christoph also looks decidedly more functional and less silly. In my opinion of course. But at least they didn't straight up copy, so there's that.
The only way to test that claim is to have a "seal off" competition. I should actually put this in my vac chamber to see how it does. So far it seals really well
@@Doodlebud agree, but you can already see ink in the cap that has crept into the cap finial threads... 🤔 I'd love to see a comparison, but the FC pen is not cheap... Another factor that plays into the whole shebang!
Huh... Probably a Chinese style us in the West will not understand. And the clip? The size and lack of functionality is reminiscent of the Sheaffer's Tuckaway. Basically a roll stop for a lady's purse pen.
Glad somebody agrees with me i was begining to think i had missed something with this pen. Then pen itself looks big until you take off the 5inch demonstrator cap, then you have a small 6inch nail with a chincy gold coloured nugget on top & the clip isn't even the same colour they must have had surplus to use from other Majohn pens
The problem is that when Chinese pen manufacturers copy Western designs everyone moans and criticises. Here we have something a bit different, a bit innovative and not, as far as I'm aware, a clone of some European or American pen. That said, I don't like it! The V1 is an attempt to reinvent the wheel except it's not the shape of a wheel. I am guessing this is a design that some people will fall in love with. It is unique and some concerns may not be such a big deal after all. I accept it does write well, has a huge ink capacity and is good value. For me the "cap" is the main issue. I take notes at home and at work. I am constantly removing and putting the cap back on my pens. Such a long tube makes the process somewhat cumbersome and awkward. Good review as always Doodlebud.
This would probably be the one to use for longer writing sessions, especially with the large ink capacity. Maybe a good travel pen since you can use the cap to mix a drink ;)
Interesting design for sure. The clip seems to act more like a roll stop, but as you can stand the pen upright, why bother with the clip at all? Aesthetics? What I didn't think about was the weight of the piston knob. I am guessing it is made from aluminum which would reduce the weight. My hands are medium in size and I would probably find the pen to be back weighted. Still the pen does hold a decent amount of ink. Worth considering? Possibly. An every day carry? No. Decent writer? Yes. Value for price? ???? Great review
Aesthetics aside, the pen writes well, has a huge vacuum fill ink capacity sporting a very unique design… and the cap doubles as a half shot. Montblanc’s Moctezuma pen is another such pen whose cap covers the whole body and acts as a sheath to the Atlatl inspired body design.
And if I look on the Lotus site they have a bunch pens that look very similar to so many other pens out there too. You could argue for example their Shikhar model looks like an Esterbrook Etsie. Seems if manufacturers outside of China make pens that looks similar to each other its totally fine. But if a Chinese manufacture makes a pen and shares any detail that some other pen has its now a rip off copy of that design 🤔
@@Doodlebud I’m sorry. I love your reviews. I should have added that the Lotus Pen was not in fact an original design but it has been made for years by Lotus. I think original design was named a safety pen as its design was an attempt to prevent ink accidents. But I could be totally off base. Again sorry if I offended you.
@@raclark52 didn't offend me at all and sometimes over text it's very easy to not give the right message. I just notice specifically with Chinese pens there are tons of comments to show design features that are "stolen" from other pens but that doesn't happen with non Chinese pens. To be fair, there's no shortage of Chinese pens that are pretty close copies to well know pens so I can understand why. But there does seem to be a bias for sure, and I'm no doubt guilty of that too. All good my friend 👍 I think I'll actually do a video on the topic. It will no doubt stir up a lot of debate but maybe help with perspective as well

It looks pretty cool 😎 if it writes well good conversation starter 😂 I might just put one in my cart
If it was a #6 and had a standard clip, I'd love it (o:
I strangely like it and I normally detest gold accents.
I think they also just have a plain silver anodize as well
@@Doodlebud they actually do, I checked after the video. It is nice.
Noticed you had a majohn a2 in that pen case, review?
Yup in the queue
nice :)@@Doodlebud
I played around with that to see if you could get an "accidental discharge" and there didn't seem to be anyway to make that happen
LOL. Trust the science. If it's got some Old Smokey it can't be bad.
I believe they indulged in ‘ Architect’s syndrome ‘ and designed something different for the sake of being different at the price of impracticality
I love it so much because it looks so silly! Clicked on this primarily to see if it posts 😂😂
They should have made it thread to post to make it completely insane!
I've been searching for a flip-open lid pen case like the one you have here on your video. Can you tell me please, who makes it and where I can get it? Thanks.
I would say it's a great design for traveling. It seems to me that it's a plane decompression prouf pen. I would love to test it actually, but over here I can't find it.
that clip is just a bummer. they could've just went all in with a clip that's longer...you know for proportion.
Lots of odd design stuff on this pen
Sensacional!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)))) Enquanto você usa a caneta para escrever ou desenhar algo, a tampa da caneta é um copo para um drink!! :))))
Ha-ha. That's a lot of engineering work for what I consider a novelty pen. Maybe I'll take a "Shot." 😜....even though those inky finial threads irk me some.
Since its only half a shot your have to take 2 ;)
@@Doodlebud I could always acquire TWO. AH, the good Tequila Mockingbird. Have to cut the worm in halfs.
Lol, you're funny, "possibly the reason the nib writes so well, its because it is super quality"
There's quality, then there' SUPER quality!
What an curious pen! I kind of like its oddness, not enough to buy one, though. :)
This looks like that montblanc montezuma
What? It doesn't post? What were they thinking!
I know... crazy! LOL
Heh, careful. You might loosen the glue in the finial threads with the alcohol. 😅
Slightly more serious thought, the cap protects the entire pen rather than just the nib. Not a pen for me though.
Just have to make sure not to let the booze sit in there for a long time which is no problem for me!
What's the name of that sexy little silver number in the middle in that box you had in the beginning?
Lamy Aion. Here's the review
th-cam.com/video/juB24lvx7DM/w-d-xo.html
The short clip is so that it will not show in a pocket with a flap that comes down. I believe it comes from military uniforms where they're not allowed a clip to show.
Why???? why not? Its different, its a pen to get people to buy it, I want to try it.
An interesting pen, rather cool but a bit weird. I would get it as a novelty pen, just to have an out of the norm pen. Thanks for the review.
It stands out for sure! Odd but also fun
Well, you did say they should do their own designs. 😃
Yes I did and they came up with something that does stand out!
I'm pretty sure this company bought the moonman C1, or the company that owned it.
A single cigar sleeve.
Can we get TWSBI Vac Mini?
We have TWSBI Vac Mini at home!
Great review, but my head is spinning at the idea of wearing a dress shirt without a pocket. Is this a BC thing because you don’t need somewhere to put sunglasses???
I dunno but most stores you go into or when I get shirts made don't do a front pocket anymore. More of a change in style thing
Random question: how long does a video like this take you from recording to finish?
It looks like a cigar tube
Redundant leak protection for travel?
Does that design makes this the most airplane-proof fountain pen?
it would make a good pocket pen, the piston knob just stops it.
Yeah nah this just doesn’t cut it for me. Some odd balls have character. This one I’d use once and then into the spares drawer.
It's not a clip! it's a magazine! get your gun terminology right! hahahaha
I like it, but I still don't get it.....
But... will it post?
Yes.... with some glue
Lotus Pens having making a pen like this for years. It’s on their website and has been for years. So yes it’s a copy.
It will no doubt stir up a lot of debate but maybe help with perspective as well
Sir Doodlebud... You don't understand?!? ..😂.. stop lying to us.😉.. one thing is if you don't like it bu you know it is a design choice, and I happen to like it accely I some time ago were brainstorming about a new pen design and inspired by the pilot elite I came to a design just like that..
Maby they can balance the pen with a heavyer section.
Well anny way it is a cool pen.
