The cool thing about those classic four pin relays is the way they fit into their home two different ways, upside down or right side up. The clever design allows them to work perfectly fine, either way. Those four pin relays are protected from accidental wrong insertion by always having the load side power diagonally across from the load side ground, and the same for the control pair. So, you can safely assume that a four pin rectangular relay will have diagonally opposing partners, although you don't know which is which. In those specific relays, that makes it impossible to accidentally jump load power to computer ground if you avoid any jumping that is not diagonal. And it makes tools like your AES tool work fine across many different platforms.
This is what makes YT the best source of knowledge in 🌎 ( ya we know internet also has it's bad side ) but SD videos are a gold mine 👌 Sorry for your friend's loss 😢

Hi I just have time to see this video and I am sorry for your student loss. You are the best teacher Paul I wish I could be your student in precense, but I am your student on TH-cam, thank you very much. Every time I am in trouble with a car I say "what would Paul do?" And it works! I work only with some basic tools, you are so blessed to have so many things to do the job. Regards
Paul you are an amazing teacher. Im sorry for your loss brother. I have learned so much from you. All your knowledge and hard work is greatly appreciated!
So watching this video brings back memories for me being in class at Toyota and Mercedes Benz there are few teachers that can bring it down to an easy understanding as you do from the stand point of being a newbie and so young. There was 1 in Toyota and 2 in Mercedes that had that ability. Being taught by my shop foreman at Toyota he gave me the insight and ability to ask the questions in class to get things started, there were times that the class was for better words not going anywhere and I would ask the teacher a question i already knew the answer to because I fixed at the dealership already and they had to research for the answer calling sometimes the engineers to find the fix. Hey if you are teaching you should know how to come up with the conclusions I did sometimes spending hours to trace it out pulling interiors apart to find said bad crimp connection. These were on brand newish cars too. Later on they would find a DTB for said problem back in the day when computers were not used as they are today. Retired and love watching your videos and I can say some of the things you teach gave me better ways to diag then before, you put a different spin on it and we look at the problems differently and come to the conclusion and fix. Rest in peace Flip many of my friends to are doing the wrench turning in the afterlife or just looking down at us laughing from a better place.
Well thank you. You have taught me so much. I also pass on the knowledge you have given me. I have solved many, many issues with the skills you pass on. I so wish I could meet you. My dream would be to take your classes and do case studies with you. God bless you and yours.
Thanks for the vids Paul, even though I am a 'backyard basics' kinda guy, and most of your vids are too technical for me, most of what I have learnt is from you and your lessons at Rosedale Technical and also Pete's. It is indeed a humbling honour to see you, Cameraman Caleb, your brother, family, Pete, students and everyone else as I learn basics. Thank you so much to each and every one of you. God bless you all, take care and keep safe especially in these days.Hooroo for now from sou-west Sydney Australia.

Another excellent teaching video. I'm glad you expounded on the need to do final testing on the starter itself, even though your testing up top pointed to the starter motor. The work flow of professional shops is to make the diagnosis, get approval, order parts, and a few days later get it all done with parts in hand. The tech who does the work may not even be the guy who made the diagnosis, and they could easily lean into it and do what was planned with no final testing at all. Disappointingly, we see that here on TH-cam as well.
Feels great to support your stuff, Paul. One of the many genuinely fantastic techs and all around Genuinely great human beings in this industry. Thanks for all you do!!!
Such an awesome addition at the end. Honoring your friend. Sorry for your loss. Thank you for doing what you do I just found your channel but I can def say I feel like it was a blessing to do so. Starting my journey now and I can’t imagine how many times I’ll reference ur vids. Thanks

Great video and explanation on how the starter system works. I wish AES Wave would re-introduce that tool. I know they are supposedly revising it but it's been several years since it has been available for sale. RIP Flipp.
Awesome video. I haven't used the 12v incandescent tester, but I get an audible clicking when the ignition is turned to start with the panel lights flickering. No corrosion on studs/nuts/eyelit. Did the screwdriver trick and heard a "whirl" each time where I'm thinking it is the clutch that gave out. No crank each time, however watching this video I think I needed ignition key to be on run while I did that?
That's a fancy way I'd just swap the starter relay for the one that sits Wright next to the one your working on the one I seen on the left is the relay for the 4 ways if u look both relays are exactly the same so if u switch them it starts or the the 4 ways don't work after u switch them then it's a bad relay always check your fuse boxes for relays like the one in question most manufacturers youse the same throughput the vehicle its 50/50 if u find one you don't need to do anything elts just get a new one and it's fixed nice video 😉
I recently fixed no crank no start issue on a 1999 Volvo V70. I first tried to jump started it, no go so it's not the battery. Then I pulled out the starter relay and hot wired pin 30 and 87, it did start the car. This ruled out the starter. I tested the starter relay and it clicked, so it's not the relay. I took out my test light and test pin 85 and 86. Pin 86 lit up when I cranked with a key, so I knew it's not ignition switch. Then I ran a wire between pin 85 and negative terminal of the battery. I was able to crank and start the car with a key. Problem solved.
I’m not in your classes, but when you are asking the questions to the students, here’s me feeling under pressure to answer correctly and not let you down.
HEY SD, Paul, for the scan tools that you use and if they show the total number of modules once the full scan is complete, can you please show this in all future videos. In this case, at timestamp 0:40, there are 12 modules listed at the top of the scan tool shot, this way if we have this vehicle with less than 12, we can figure out what is missing as not all scan tools show a module that has no comm and we don't memorize these bits of info but a few of us do take notes of many YT videos. I also have noticed that YT is showing these CHAPTERS just above this comment section, it seems that you, the content provider are giving the timestamps so that is you or your son taking even more of your time to improve on your processes. Hello, my good colleague, I am happy to use your valuable experiences and to get to know you. I am from Iran with pride and with hot internet and many problems, I don't know if you are aware of it or not... I have a question for you. Because of the sanctions, we cannot have the wiring diagram of the cars, any car from Toyota, Hyundai to Dodge, Cadillac, etc. I do it like the cars of 50 years ago without a map, that is, I look at the color of the wire and open the adhesive tape and take the wire trace. I'm sorry if it's typed badly, because I'm using Google Translate because my English is not very good, thanks
Pleas help me
I recently had a 73 ford truck that would not crank, but the headlights did not dim. Checked (attempted) cranking voltage with a voltmeter and was less than 10v.on the battery terminals - not enough to engage the solenoid. I suspect a shorted cell inside the Optima battery which is a potentially dangerous situation. Battery voltage was 12.3v with no load.
Thank you for the video

I was told that today in vehicles from 2010 onwards it is not advisable to remove the relays to perform measurements as they can cause misconfigurations.
How true is that?😀
Not true at all. Who told you that?
