    "Fishwife" is UK slang for an annoying woman. It's pretty archaic now, not something you hear too often. It comes from the idea that the wives of fisherman have to spend long periods without their husbands and that this causes an... independent streak that many men found to be disagreeable. The more common usage these days is to describe a gossip, as in "gossiping like fishwives" but ironically this is most often used to insult gossiping men, as in "you're worse than a bunch of fishwives".

    I've always assumed the demons hate salt thing came from the seasoning's uses in ancient cultures. Earliest human society was built on salt in a lot of ways. Stuff like salting meat to preserve it and then they didn't get sick when they ate it later. But they didn't fully understand the process of food rot and certainly had no idea about bacteria so it must have seemed to them like, "The salt drove the evil spirits out of the meat!" Something like that.

    • @chaost4544
      @chaost4544 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You're not too far off. In a lot of religions, salt is represented as incorruptible purity and immutability and in some sects of Christianity it's still put in holy water. Probably the ability to preserve food with salt had a lot to do with how the mythos around salt was created.

      @ma-ri-ko ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Salt as a purifying and sacred thing way predates christianity. it’s been associated with the ocean and birth waters for a long time, and therefore rebirth. But ancient people definitely knew that salt stopped microbial activity as well. They conjectured about the mechanisms behind it using the lens of their culture and era, same as we do now. As someone who works in the health field, I think the amount of practice that is based on theory would be startling to most people. Technological progress is not necessarily linear

The interminable Ethan Rayne back again causing havoc. A decent little episode and great fun.

    when it comes to the whole 'secret govt camp' thing, i think it's really important to keep in mind that there is absolutely no way to argue in favor of incarceration that doesn't also apply to current and historical atrocities. 🤷🏻‍♀like, full stop. my grandma's entire generation of nikkei people was incarcerated for having japanese heritage while living on american soil. my great-grandfather didn't even see the inside of camp til after the loyalty questionaire was distributed, he was disappeared to a DOJ prison less than 24 hours after pearl habor. if i want a copy of his 'enemy alien card' from the national archives it'll run me about $100. it's not really a theoretical discussion, campy show or not. ya can't say 'well if aliens come blah blah blah' without also describing a time where entire groups of people were being inhumanely treated as inhuman. it is literally, word for word, the same arguments.

    You're right that not all demons are bad, although it's hard to fault others for not knowing it.
    There has been a lot of development in this area of slayer lore. In the beginning, everything Buffy had learned and was told said that demons are bad and it's the slayer's job to just kill them.
    Things changed in Angel's season one episode though when Buffy's life was made infinitely more complicated when she learned not all demons are bad. Before it was simple, she was a warrior. In that episode, she learned the true nature of the slayer was as judge and protector. It's easy to see the scene where she dropped the crossbow and presented her neck to Angel as a young girl with a crush putting faith in the guy she likes, however naive. Instead, what she really was doing was judging Angel worthy of death. She did this again in the 3rd season when he returned. That tear rolling down her face when he remembered her name was because she was so relieved she didn't have to kill him. A big part of the reason why she never told the scobie he was back was because she was judging him as the slayer. Initially, she was all but certain she was going to have to kill him again and she sti hadn't told anyone Angel's soul was back when she killed him the first time. So her locking him up and frantically checking into the mysterious deaths was her desperately hoping to find a reason to judge him not worthy of death.
    Still, while Buffy leaned all these things on her own, she has faced resistance. The Watcher's Council definitely has different views on the subject. Like the initiative, they view all demons as evil and worthy of death no matter if they pose a threat to humans or not. In Angel's episode, Giles was just as surprised as Buffy that a demon could be good. Kendra similarly was stuck on the idea that Angel should be killed no matter what. Same with Faith. That very issue ended Buffy's relationship with the Council, as they refused to provide a cure for Angel, saying it wasn't their policy to keep a vampire alive no matter if he had a soul or not.
    So, we can't really blame he Initiative for having a similar view.
    Still, knowing what we know from Angel so far, it does present an interesting view on things. We know there are Powers that Be now, higher order beings who manage the various players fighting for good. They were the ones that sent Angel to Buffy to learn how to be a warrior for good in the first place. We also know that the slayers have been pushed into a particularly harsh view of the demon realm by the Watchers. One that isn't really in line with the Powers that Be. In fact, Buffys realization that she is a judge and holding to that responsibility rather than continue to allow the council to push her to to against that role is one of the things that really makes her unique in the history of slayers. It's also something that appears to be of note, something to keep in mind going forward, as it's something she keeps having to deal with.

    It always annoyed me not that Buffy assumed that Giles knew (when he was hurt and didn't go when everyone else found out about Riley), but that spending the day with Riley was more important. Its just another key moment in the theme of the season: the division of high school vs college and whether or not high school relationships can carry over and survive.
    I was waiting for The Normies reaction to "oh bugger, I thought you'd gone" and chasing Walsh while Giles was as a demon.
    Buffy has this attitude of bad guys lie because they're bad guys mentality. After dealing with Angelus (and now a reformed Anya), I've always thought that a naïve take on life that shows her age and character well. This carries over to defending Riley in Initiative matters. Soldiers follow orders, so his reaction now that he has questions (seeing 314) need to be suspect, and what his bosses are doing need to be suspect.
    No one questioned if Rana was OK with Willow and Tara. They questioned her denial of it going to happen.
    Buffy knew it was Giles by looking into his eyes. Its why there was a closeup on them just after she stabbed him.

Her family was together until after the events of it split her parents, albeit off-screen between the movie and the first episode, not counting the pilot. So it wouldn't be for most of her life. 26:00 LITERALLY the entire plot and somewhat motivation of Batman v Superman: Ultimate Cut with how the world is reacting to Superman, an alien among us. Which is why I will always die on the hill of that film being one of the best modern comic book movies ever. ❤

    They really should have kept Ethan Rayne showing up once a season to do something goofy. Need a ridiculous concept for an episode? Ethan Rayne is here!

    Mark 7:29. "40"?! Oh okay, that's what I thought. I had been giving her the benefit of a doubt, like with Joyce. But to me she either looks older than 40, or Buffy got the age wrong, or she's just plain, and not as cute as Joyce! 🤔

  • @jimmiegiboney2473
    @jimmiegiboney2473 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Mark 2:34. "Spoiler Alert"? 😁 SMG, is in a movie that has other cast members doing nudity, especially in an orgy scene. But for her sex scene, she has her clothes on just like she does in this series!
    But she had more fun in the scene in which she gets to roll around on a made bed covered in real cash! (The producer explained in the commentary that he hated scenes like that in which the money is obviously fake movie money! So he keeps real cash in a vault just to be used for such scenes! He makes sure the people are clean, dry, and in soft apparel so no harm is done to the cash so that it can bd reused. I think it is $10,000.00? 🤔

    I read/watch a lot of supernatural stuff before watching Buffy and I agree with Rana, casting magic was just like that. I didn’t pick on anything between Tara/Willow until it was spelled out for me.

    • @troikas3353
      @troikas3353 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Partly by design. They deliberately slow burned it through small moments and subtext so the network censors wouldn't realize what they were doing until it was too late to stop it. That said, the sparks and chemistry between them right from their first interaction in Hush are so painfully obvious I really don't know how anyone misses it.

    • @Merilirem
      @Merilirem ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@troikas3353 Yeah they had to be very careful since it was touchy. Faith and Buffy's chemistry was blocked entirely earlier in the show so they knew it wasn't something they could get away with unless they were careful.
      The people that miss it are the intended people to miss it. The people who are like the censors and won't notice.

    How about instead of making people pay for Patreon you edit your Angel episodes and put them on TH-cam like your subscribers actually want? Your previous poll was clearly wrong and you continue to prove it by having to reference Angel almost every Buffy discussion.
