Is 'Godfather 2' BETTER Than GODFATHER ONE?! (or worst sequel?)

The last scene with Michael's close up is incredibly powerful. It serves as a metaphor for life. We'll all be faced with that moment when we look back with doubt and regret.

A lot of people hated The Godfather Part II when it first came out and a lot of it was due to the constant jumps between past and present.
But now it is widely considered a Masterpiece within the same breath as its predecessor.
The time jumps in Part II are one of the biggest reasons why I love the Sequel.

Michael’s story in this movie is about how he uses fear to gain power but loses everyone in the end. Vito’s story shows how he uses respect to gain power. The 2 stories connect as it contrasts both of the dons. While I agree part 2 is worse, I still think it is an amazing movie with a different story and message.

This is a great breakdown of the film. I loved the film but could also see your perspectives. For future videos, there are two opening sequences that I love and would like to hear your opinions on them... if you focus on opening sequences. Touch of Evil, and Guys and Dolls. Those are two of my favorites! Love your channel! DW (subscriber)

Another detail was the symbolism pertaining to oranges. Everything there are oranges in some scenes like when Vito is gunned down whilst buying them, and another when he's in the garden with his grandson with that orange in his mouth before he dies. That's just 2 examples though.

    More complicated
its the only fillm thats both a sequel and a prequel. Not linear and requires attention. But a masterpiece.

Just saw the movie yesterday evening. Good timing I would say. I love your videos about The Godfather. Even if I don't agree with what you said about The Godfather part 2. But I respect everybodies thoughts when they are exposed in a nice maner. Also is nice to see some unpopular opinions now and then. For me this movie had everything from the first Godfather but better. The cinematography, the acting, the costumes etc. Personaly I love Robert Deniro's performance. But both movies are amazing in my opinion. Maybe Francci's best two movies (yes I saw Apocalypse Now). I'm very curious about your Letterboxd account. Have a nice day!

Again this was a great review, although I disagree with you about some parts.
it is true that first movie is just so amazing that nothing comes close to it, unless its godfather part 2!
Part 2 its mostly about past than the present time, the focus is to show us how a honest person and loyal husband will turn to one of the most feared Don's of all time without losing his honor and honesty and loyalty, how he can manage to keep his family and find powerful friends and earns the respect of everyone
    But
In present time we see that his son fails on every path that his father stood for, he loses friends (frank pentangeli) , family (fredo) and even his wife, his sister hates her and his men follow him only because they fear him.
Vito's friends were ready to get shoot for him (when he goes to take his parents revenge but Michael's friends are testifying against him in the court.
movie wants us to see how crowded was the scenes with Vito and how alone was Michael in a different timeline.
the scenes with Vito are generally lighter yet whenever it switches to Michael everything goes dark with so little light because its a darker era and a way darker character.
I like the fact that movie starts with Michael having problem with a senator (In part one his father wished that Michael became a senator rather than a criminal) so for that reason he really wants to prove that he is more powerful and smarter than the senator
so in the end the point of the movie is for us too see how he became everything that his father ever resented.
You are right about the fact that the flash backs and present time could've been two different movies but then we wouldn't had this amazing comparison.

I feel like the real difference between these two films is that The Godfather is a perfect film, but The Godfather Part 2 is likely the one that will resonate more. It's a sequel that elevates the first one while also building on its lore, characters, themes, etc.
The structure is brilliant, being both a sequel and a prequel while actually having a purpose: to develop the character of Michael Corleone through juxtaposition done through developing Vito Corleone.
The film is a lot like the first and it does seem to almost purposefully mirror the movie. Both have similar themes, similar endings, and entire scenes that feel very similar to each other. The theme related to America and the hypocrisy hiding under the "American Dream" is played with in both movies (the second one moreso), but the opening scenes of the movies show this flawlessly. The opening monologue does this effectively, but the second one arguably does it even better. It's a darker, longer, and more haunting look at this theme. Instead of hearing a character talk about this for 2 and a half minutes, we outright see how this plays out

I love part 2 more than part 1. The two stories corelated in a way that the empire that vito built from the scratch, is how runs by Michael now,..once when a local chieftan like Fanucci was a threat to now one of the most dangerous man in America continent Hyman Roth is now the enemy.
It shows where we've come this far, the contrast in Vito's treatment with his family to Michael's cold treatment to his..and many others.
    I love it.

GF2 is generally considered to be among the top three sequels of all time (along with Bride of Frankenstein and The Empire Strikes Back.)
I confess I’m in that camp as well. It’s a groundbreaking film on many levels.
Your disappointment might be due to the fact you were expecting something else, maybe something more conventional in terms of structure and scope?
Try putting it aside for a few months-or years-maybe read the book in the meantime if you haven’t already. Reading the source material will help you understand some of the bolder creative decisions taken with the screenplay. They’re actually incisive, not arbitrary.
Some of my favorite movies are ones I just wasn’t ready for the first time, and initially disliked or was ambivalent towards-such as 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Yours is actually a common gut reaction to GF2. Some critics in 1974 were initially cool towards it, only to recognize its true merit later. Roger Ebert famously amended his lukewarm review and embraced it as one of the greatest American movies ever made.
Like Citizen Kane, its reputation has grown exponentially over the years. Rightly so, imho.

4:18 Florida? lmao 5:40 I find Hyman Roth the most terrifying character ever put on screen. 8:26 That's a parade or a procession?
Said this, I agree that while many consider part 2 better, while I still think it's a masterpiece, it's still inferior to the "leaner" and more focused part 1. More importantly, part 1 is more COMPELLING, because it shows an actual downfall, not the continuation of one.
Nice to see more fishy observations.

Godfather part 2 isn’t as good as the original film, I do agree. It doesn’t come close. I think Part 2 is really good but I just don’t think it’s the masterpiece that lots of people call it. The Godfather part one is a masterpiece. And I love that film as it’s just rewatchable to me. Godfather part two is solid. Those are my thoughts.

You’re totally correct. Having it win Best Picture against Chinatown as well was a huge upset. In a way it felt like a weird money grab - it’s not that it’s bad, it’s fine, it just holds no weight to the original. So I totally agree

A quick yet thorough breakdown of some of the issues with The Godfather II that I wish more people were bold enough to express, as I've long felt the same way. The Godfather was an instant all time classic & I feel that to a certain degree Godfather II got by on its proximity & hype of its predecessor. By no means a bad movie that indeed at "moments" that were on par the the the greatness of the original iconic film but on the whole, a rather uneven film.
Particularly, I never felt that the young Vito flashbacks contributed that much to the film & only served to take me out of the film's main narrative. While De Niro would go on to be a legendary actor in his own right, I always felt that his turn as younger Vito did not hold a candle to Marlon Brando's iconic performance as the Don. Ultimately for me, The Godfather II is an uneven mixed bag with 'moments' of greatness worthy of the original.

It just depends on what you want in a movie but Godfather Part 2 is more of a thinking film. The cast isn't as good but to me, it has better moments.
