ATC: Groundhog 981, have they cleared you into the ramp?
Groundhog: OK, cleared to the ramp, proceeding across the runway & all the taxiways.
I was coming here to ask why it didnt get a number

100% atc fault.
At no time did they give any instruction to the groundhog.
He didn’t change frequency to Ground.
He was still tuned to Underground.
Lack of English skills major factor. Groundhog needs some language courses.

Yeah, when tower came back on and said she needed him to hold short of 9L, you could tell she was trying not to laugh. I swear you could hear people cracking up in the background for a second, too.

This would never happen in Europe, ICAO phraseology would ensure the groundhog maintained situational awareness regarding the position of aircraft on approach.
That, and we don't have groundhogs in Europe.

2:05 Sounded like Tower was rather struggling to keep a straight face (& voice) when issuing a go-around due to groundhog! 😂 For the next one they just straight up said it was out there which is awesome. This is great, makes a fun change from the usual restricted airspace violation a**holes et al... although I guess one has to consider it a restricted groundspace violation instead?! 😋

Welp, before we all know it, it'll be well below 60 Fahrenheit, with frigid wind chills, and most likely messy wintry weather in time for the holidays across North America. That groundhog definitely is a sign that summer is to be taken advantage of! (Thanks for this VASAviation!)

Wonder how big a critter has to be to shut down the runway and cause go arounds. Mouse-> Rat-> Squirrel->Rabbit->Ground Hog->Racoon->Deer We know the line is to the left of ground hog now...maybe to the right of squirrel? Would you go around in an airliner for a rabbit? Or just say sorry Bugs, you might get squished.

@@jaysmith1408 Or, if you're in a Alaska, seal or musk ox (yes, those have both happened.) Not sure if they've had a grizzly incursion, but I'd guess they probably have. Also probably one of very, very few places in the world where there has been a confirmed mid-air fish strike. By a 737.
I've cleaned rabbit remains (well, whatever remains after a rabbit goes through a JT8D) off of a runaway, so groundhog is probably the lower limit.

If a half pound bird can destroy a turbine, I image a couple pound bunny can cause some damage too. But I’m sure there is specification buried in a FAR somewhere.

Would a groundhog interfere with a landing or takeoff? I would think it'd just be roadkill
It could get sucked through an engine or its bones could cause damage to a tire
At high speeds could easily damage any sensitive part, even on the landing gear.
Any object hit with speed will cause damage. Remember a bullet is a small object travelling at speed. Even though the speed would be much lower, still dangerous.
