    Thank you for your kind words. To clarify for everyone, when he talked about "summoning the equipment", it was THAT part that I felt was not need at least at that time. My engine was still run - yes with reduced RPM - and I truly believed I was going to get to the field, taxi to parking, and take a look what happened. THEN things got worse, and I re-confirmed - in case there was any doubt - that I had a true emergency on my hand. You people that are complaining with the proper terms to use don't realize there is a LOT of shit hitting the fan, and I had about 15 seconds to make a decision WHERE to land, while flying over a very populated suburb. No fields. When I made my decision to ditch, the airport was SO insight I could almost see the runway numbers. But the Foreflight Glide path circle was showing I would be about 2.5 miles short. So, I made the decision to find a road. Thankfully a LOT of things went in my favor. About 15 seconds prior to getting near my landing location, the traffic light turned RED, giving me exactly what I needed - a HUGE break in the traffic flow. Making the decision to NOT try for the airport probably saved my life. You hear of far to many fatal crashes of planes "almost" getting there because visually, you think you can. But you are falling from the sky pretty damn fast while trying to communicate, navigate, and aviate.

      I just want to emphasize how it could've gotten a lot worse and why it's important to be comfortable with declaring an emergency at the first sign of trouble.

    Too often pilots are hesitant to declare an emergency because of perceived “paperwork”. I try to teach my students that when the engine quits, it doesn’t belong to you anymore, it belongs to the insurance company. Your job now becomes getting yourself safely on the ground.

    • @dalen.8413
      @dalen.8413 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@logicplague in this instance, the plane landed with no further damage. Often though, with an off-airport landing (think field, trees, hills, brush, etc) the aircraft experiences more damage and sometimes fire. Again, the pilot’s job is to get on the ground as safely as possible. The most survivable scenario in an off-airport landing entails that the pilot impacts the SOFTEST thing possible at the SLOWEST speed possible. Then get out and away from the plane as soon as feasible.

      Wrong - you shall not “declare an emergency” but rather use correct phraseology - and state MAYDAY x 3. If you listen - there are numerous calls doubting whether or not this is an emergency which precludes other transmissions - and even talks about subsequent paperwork - use clear and concise approved phraseology - that is THE lesson to be learned here

      @@flemmingstelling8079 How does saying the words "declaring an emergency", twice no less, mean less than saying "mayday" three times? The only reason he changed his mind is because he was getting pressure from ATC to NOT declare one. Having never declared one, he was quick to second guess himself when resistance was presented. He should have stuck with his initial decision even if there was a chance everything would have been fine. Better safe than sorry should be taken to heart in aviation.

    I am so incredibly proud of you in every way possible. Many people here don't realize the complexities of maintaining glide, speed, stall avoidance, obstacle avoidance such as power lines and traffic lights, automobiles, other souls. It's unfathomable that your communications would garner criticism. You kept the tower informed and proved were vigilant and attuned to moment by moment happenings -- which changed in the blink of an eye. Again, people who aren't pilots don't realize just how quickly things can turn on a dime. We can learn a lot from your actions. By providing detailed status, it tells me that you were also mentally going down the emergency checklist - doing all the things you were taught, but also reassuring yourself that you had the ability to see this through. On a humorous note, I love the final answer regarding the name of the highway: the intersection of two main streets! BTW, did you have any drivers or pedestrians come to you afterward?

The best thing is the pilot made it alive and well to be able to advise the driver about speed. I've seen much worse landings at airports with perfectly running planes. This was about as perfect as possible under the circumstances. I'm sure the pilot is glad to have the video for proof.

      What's not fair is the criticism of the road landing. I'm from the area, flown out of KANE many times. Where he started having trouble, it's nothing but suburbia and the only empty grounds are swamp/wetlands. He clearly assessed that Hwy 65 was too busy and then spotted 125th as less busy. ‘declaring an emergency’ seems to be a phrase used in the US for all sorts of situations, I wonder why PAN and MAYDAY aren’t used more. If this was me it would have been a PAN call with the nature of the problem and the intentions stated, then when the engine looked like it was finally failing fully, a MAYDAY. Unambiguous and efficient. (Oh and paperwork is the last thing to be worried about!) Great job on the landing.

    I've declared an emergency three times over the years, and I never had to do a single piece of paperwork.
    This pilot declared an emergency when he first contacted ATC... but ATC "talked him out of it" by asking THREE TIMES "are you declaring an emergency?" I was really annoyed hearing the ATC asking again and again, when the pilot had already clearly stated the nature of the emergency on first contact.

    Great job with the pilot with one exception, always stick with declaring an emergency. There is not "all kinds of paperwork". What you get by declaring an emergency is priority, airspace, and resources, that you desperately need when things have gone sideways in the air. You would much rather declare an emergency and not need the resources, than not declare it, and find out when you are behind the power curve that you needed the resources. But absolutely fantastic job getting that bird on the ground safely.

      @@alexanderschnittert2242 The FAA procedures say to call MAYDAY three times, the FAA procedures do not include this bullshit "declaring an emergency". But people think it's uncool or something, and it gets people killed. I've heard controllers talk over a rambling explanation, and specifically the one time the pilot said emergency. Then she gave him three instructions based on him having a perfectly working aircraft before she asked him if it was an emergency. They also need to understand the part where they have absolute priority. There was a turbine single that lost its engine over the water while heading north along the Florida coast and the controller gave them a right 270 "for spacing" to let a commercial jet get in ahead of them. The result was a very wet TBM. The pilot should have said "MAYDAY unable, turning left for visual runway ". At the time he had the altitude to make the runway.

    • @zachbell2270
      @zachbell2270 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@alexanderschnittert2242the US does use “Mayday” but there’s a significant stigma against using it. The pilot even said in this exchange “lots of paperwork” which is absolutely the last reason anyone should consider when deciding whether or not to declare an emergency. If this pilot hadn’t been able to stick his landing he might have delayed activation of emergency responders by precious minutes that might have cost him or others on the ground dearly.
      The pilot overall did an excellent job here but that’s a problem that more pilots need to be trained out of.
