I wish I could give you a hug right now. This saved me hours of troubleshooting and frustration. Every little step you revisited in the beginning was identical to what I did before I hit a dead end. I really appreciate you empathizing with others like us out there who know our audio gear, and yet failed to get the most basic functions to work out-of-the-box. I have a feeling this is a common result from the manufacturing/QA/packaging process. It'd be really easy to hit a few stray buttons and leave them armed by mistake. But discovering how these routing options work actually taught me a lot about the board - I can see myself using these features to quickly toggle between aspects of a mix or things I don't need to monitor while tracking. Massive thanks for putting this and many of your other Tascam Model 12 videos out there. Going to be revisiting your channel often in the early days with this thing!
I felt so stupid not understanding what was wrong, until I saw your video and how many others here were in the exact same situation as me. Thank you so much for your explanations!
Very helpful. Thank you so much. Kinda silly how they designed the default settings with this out of the box. You answered questions that the manual didn't address
Wow, thanks for making this video. I swore all the buttons were good when I checked but when you pointed out specific ones, I was shocked to discover solo buttons pressed down and I totally skipped over the AFL button. Thanks so much for saving my night!
This a lifesaver video. I would have been so confused/frustrated. I returned a TASCAM 24 recorder because of its unnecessary complexity. Just because you can invent it doesn't mean it's a good idea. Then I bought a Model 24.I'm learning at this point. Thank you for having the persistence to keep looking and the kind insight to realize others might be ready to tie the noose.
Many thanks for this clear, systematic explanation. All it took was one of those buttons to be in the wrong position, even though it wasn't on the channels I was working with! Really appreciate it.
Thanks again, just got my Model 12 yesterday and now can't make the reverb work. Had it working for a while them deleted my first voice test recording and cannot get the EF's back !#@$

As someone else here commented.. although I banged my head against this brick wall for 3 hours before finding your video (stubborn.. should have just looked earlier) I probably learned a lot that I won't forget because of the 'busted knuckles' syndrome. Thanks for the very helpful video and greets from Dallas!!

hi, many thanks for all these great tutorials. everything you upload and explain is very clear. There is just one question I have and maybe if you get the time to answer it, it would be highly appreciated. Have I understood it right, that the following happens when choosing PFL SOLO MODE: when pressing the SOLO button, the signal gets routed to the headphones section only, before the fader. It is not sent at all to the MAIN-channel (even if the main button in this channel is pressed), which means that you can only hear the soloed signal in PFL mode if you listen through your headphones. thanks again =)
PFL Solo mode allows you to listen on headphones just the channel that you solo, without effecting the main mix. Here is my explanation video th-cam.com/video/dhusEJb-pQQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=cE1SgIeg2VjEW365&t=204
the problem i'm still having in using tracks 5 and 6 as an fx buss by running the sub outs through my pedalboard and into them is that 1) when everything is set to afl (red light off), the mix in my DAW switches to mono. only by keeping it in pfl, where only the faders on my DAW matter, do i get a stereo signal. and 2) i can only hear the fx via MAIN, going out through my studio monitors, but not on headphones, even if the SOLO button is pressed in
Any reason you can think of why this marvellous and clear set of instructions works for line 11/12 (I have the Model 16) but not for line 1? I have one synthesizer plugged into line 11/12 and I can hear in through the headphones, but I have another synthesizer plugged into line 1 and I can't hear anything playing from that one at all.
Hey there, I was wondering if you would maybe do a video on the proper way to set up an external preamp with the model 12. my attempts have been giving me less desirable results than I've had with other audio interfaces. Thanks. Your videos are great!
Mic into the external preamp, the line output of preamp into a line input of any channel. Make sure you have done proper gain staging of the input levels. th-cam.com/video/RdrAKWxEaio/w-d-xo.html
I did all of that and still can't hear my headphones. I just checked my headphones on another device and they do work. My mixer is plugged into the pc with usb cable, and all the other things you mentioned are exactly as stated. What else can it be?
I assume you’re trying to listen to audio from your computer. Make sure you have Ch1&2 faders up, Main selection on both channels. This is because audio from your computer is sent to only channels 1&2.
my PFL/AFL light is still lit even though none of the Solo buttons are down, and the AFL button in the FX section of the main faders is up. super weird. the only way i can hear my audio through the headphone outs (and see the main meter beside the screen) is when the Solo button is pushed down on the channel.
was a about a split secomd from sending it back......thx ..but how can i get my zoom effects pedal to aux 1 .to use on mic 1 ( plate reverb i like better ) ..insrt didnt work ??? no sound ??? .... disappointed no effect or aux send receive for stereo..like analog mixer ...but MTR makes up for it
Thank you for this video. I'm trying to mix a live band and what you're using the main outputs for I'd for your studio monitors. I'm able to use the main outputs to the speakers facing the audios, but have been unable to get sound for monitor for the band. I'm using an instrument cable from aux 1 out to a mackie thump speaker. I had this same problem for my Model 16 and this was a huge help. HOWEVER! When I record into my daw (garageband) I can't play back the recording and hear it through the headphones connected to my mixer. Do you know what might be the cause of this? Also, any effects I add to my tracks on the mixer don't record into the daw. Maybe I've got the wrong device for what I'm trying to achieve...? Any help is greatly appreciated as I'm about to get rid of this thing out of sheer frustration.
I was recently watching a video talking about doing the final mix using headphones only. The idea was a lot of people can't mix through monitors because they live in aptartments or have family's and have to be quite. They suggested using a headphone amp, and open back headphones. the amp they suggested was Rupert Neve Designs RNHP 1-channel Precision Headphone Amplifier because it gives the highest quality purest sound. have you heard of this?
Spend the money on good known brand reference open-back headphones. The difference an amp will make compared to the available headphone output is minuscule. Unless the headphone had higher than the normal 32-50 Ohm impedance. Some headphones may have 250 Ohm and may require more powerful amps to drive them.
Try to listen back to the mix over speakers at some point. Mixing exclusively through headphones doesn't give you a "room" mix - balance and volume can sound drastically different from headphones to speaker.

Sad that i have to do this and hope it always fixes that issue that i still have from time to time. Thought it was me, but it was'nt. Now my issue is no audio from my PC. I get the signal on my model 12 from the PC, but no audio in my headphones nor my monitors. Usually when you forget the main, bus buttons or afl and get no audio, you don't have the green meters by the LCD screen flashing, but i have everything in order, the 2 green level meter working as they are suppose to, but no sound. I even tried setting the 9/10 channel as the PC return channel, and when i raise the 9/10 fader, the green meters go higher as they should, but still no sound. I just hope it's not another issue like when i need to power off and on again to get the channel signal working. It's annoying when you're not sure it's you or the machine.
