Hey Jeff, why don't you do a quick breakdown vid of my MMA Sparring Round and my Grappling Round with Korean Zombie since he fights tonight in Singapore UFC?
Your head movement, footwork and overall slick counters/combos are always a fascinating thing to observe Jeff!! Your creativity and mastery of the "flow" is what makes you such a technical inspiration to us 💯
Hey Jeff, nice to see that with all your experience and high level you still remain self-critical. That's exactly what convinced me when I subscribed to your channel back then and still does. Very nice sparring session!
I appreciate how you continue to be objective and humble about what happened and how you are accountable for your actions in these kinds of situation, I'm definitely guilty of mutual escalation with bigger sparring partners myself. But yes, big guys don't know their own strength 😂
I've got a fun story about this. When I was 15, I was 165cm tall and 60kg. I sparred with a lean 130kg, 190cm, 30 year old pro-kickboxer who knocked me a quarter meter into the air with a back kick to the liver. I don't know where the blood came from, but I spit a little bit up and almost blacked out. How did he respond? "Are you okay"? No. "Sorry about that"? No. He said, "Jesus, your abs are weak!" Now, I'm sure it felt that way to him, considering he was over double my weight. However, there's not a lot of physical pain I wouldn't take over that again, lol!
Nick definitely has power. He did start to feel the low kicks and stopped planting like an oak tree after 2:26 . 100% agreement. Stand and bang with a big opponent is never a good plan. Chop and evade! Eventually the tree will fall...
As a big dude, I especially love watching these types of videos before sparring! It helps me 1. Get ready for the movement of smaller partners & 2. Prepare myself to move like someone with a smaller body 😅 atleast that's what I'm trying to accomplish... Love the stuff Jeff, always referencing you to my Muay Thai classes 🙏
Sparring with a big difference in weight is always challenging! I completely understand that my 50% is a lot for smaller fighters, and I try to stay mindful of the weight and power gap while sparring. However, us bigger guys tend to be slower at a give intensity than the smaller guys, and when a smaller fighter is taking advantage of the speed difference to land shots it's a very similar situation to when we use our power. The only way us big guys can close the gap in speed is to increase explosiveness, which will increase the power of the shots. At both levels, there's gotta be a relaxing of ego. The best sparring is where both guys give and take IMO. Anyways, great sparring footage and great conversation fodder. Love the vids, as always.
That's exactly what I wanted to talk about. I'm a light weight and I know this gives me an advantage when sparing softly with a big guy. Cause I can boxe very fast without a lot of power. In the video Chan says the big guy should adapt his power... Well okay but then you should adapt your speed, otherwise it's easier for you to touch him. I think it's hard for heavy weight to go fast without power. When not doing competition it's always nice to adapt your level so both people can share a good time together.
@@faidutore Definitely harder for heavyweights to move fast without power! When your arms and legs are 2x the size of your opponent's, it takes a lot more power to get them going fast lol. And a lot more power to control the strike as it lands, as well. At the same time, I don't put blame on either guy. At a certain point there was a mutual escalation, and afterwards they both talked it over which is exactly the right thing to do. From my experience, the more you can communicate with your sparring partners, the easier it is to have mutually beneficial training sessions.
When I do headshots I relax before hit (maybe retract a bit to) so I can do fast explosive punches that only touch. Same with kicks to the body unless they catch and sweep me then I keep the power high and bounce off instead. Im around 71kg and this works well for me but Im not sure if this works for heavier dudes but I think it should. Example is try to hit the bag as fast as you can but as gentle as you can.
This one is like a bad relationship, things would be perfect if they could just communicate better😂. It offers so many valuable reminders and shows how things can escalate easily. We have everything on display in this one including desperation, misreading of an opponent, heavy telegraphing, failure to adjust to the opponents size and weight, along with a sickening amount of ego. I love it. The cornicopia of egos is of course offset by the display of phenominal cardio and breath control. You handled this one so well. You are absolutely fearless and this manifests in so many ways here. You hold your own impressively well, like a MA version of Optimus Prime negating the size/weight differential. You still manage to have an admirable level of fluidity and flow (think Optimus Prime with a lot of karate and jeet under the metal). Nick's nod is super intimidating! But also very cage rattling. He has a load of power and that power is consistent even after a few good hits. I like his pace. Initially I was hoping for one of you to dial it back and hoped that it would soon be followed by the other. Obviously I was expecting too much;) After the nod that changed to me wanting you to move in with an aggressive barrage. If ever Nick is ever in a street fight, that nod is going to be like waving a red flag at a bull;) It's one of those times where you sit down afterwards and realize that neither party intended it to be this way and that both opponents are nice and respectful, just a little ego reactive at times. This was a good one, ego filled but also very valiant on both parts, well done.
I really think you were in the bad here. Nick Is keeping really calm even after the really hard kicks you are trowing. Even if the big swing is trow and it feels strong he can still control the hit before landing. Also remember that this is your work and life, and i don't know if this guy Nick is just an amateur or doing this as a hobby. If you are more experienced you should be able to back of for 5 seconds and lower the tempo and control your energy. :)
Bro that is some hard sparring! You held your own definitely. I couldn’t keep this level of sparring up more than once in 2 weeks lol. Please stay safe out there…
Jeff really nice video. When youre in holland you should visit sokudo gym. Thats were the legend ernesto hoost started. He right now gives lessons there . I think u would love to do the a lesson when hoost is teaching and then the sparring start
Jeff, your combos, counters, head movement, footwork are amazing and very creative, you're technically better striker than a lot of ufc fighters, why did you retire you could make it to Ufc considering you're very popular on youtube
Beautiful flow man! Love Jeff’s style. I once said it’s like a clean Dominick Cruz lol other guy is like stone like Alex Pereira, scary and puts on pressure but not much head movement. Great vid, great spar. Hats off to both men💪🏼
I enjoy watching you spar, your technique, timing and flow are beautiful to watch. I can't understand how you spar so hard like that without getting hurt/injured!
Another great video Jeff! I really like watching you reflect on how things can escalate, even if the person who started it may not be doing it on purpose or even realize it. As someone who likes to keep it light and technical most of the time, it reminds me about the need to keep a cool head even if your opponent does something they shouldn't
Hey Jeff, why don't you do a quick breakdown vid of my MMA Sparring Round and my Grappling Round with Korean Zombie since he fights tonight in Singapore UFC?
Dont stand and bang is why in Wing Chun, we practice sticking to smoulder our opponents. Same principle for tai chi push hands, bagua push hands, wrestling etc.

I'm wise enough now not to get my ego involved, but there's a difference between that and someone who doesn't listen to a call to calm down, and then it's just a case of given some good, clean shots under control to help them comprehend. I had to do exact this last week, and they kind of got the message. Even then, our teacher had to explain to my sparring partner how one should acknowledge a shot rather than just ignore it and punch back (if you don't acknowledge, and pause momentarily you don't understand that a proper shit would have meant you could not have thrown that punch/kick/whatever). Good video and breakdown. Keep it coming.
2:50 Jeff. I realized that if you do pressure moves like the push kick, it makes opponents default to their original stance. I think he was hiding the left leg to the back as it's already starting to hurt, hence the change of stance. When you push kicked him, him changed to a different stance where you could quickly move in for another inside kick.
I was just chillin and watching nick throw those low kicks, I unintentionally twitched my left leg a few times to try and check the non existent kick. 😂

@@MMAShredded It was such a clean hit too, but maybe not full power. If you train to capitalize on that set up I think it could be a game changer for a low kicker like yourself. Great stuff as always
I like to go a lot more to the body. Jab and right cross and circle to their lead hand, untill I notice they dropping their hands. The karate style teep towards the abodemen also does the trick. Then my most fave combo is to jab the body and throw a right overhand, when they drop the hand. Catches them a lot of times. Im just to short to go headhunting.
I'm +/-73kg (160lbs) and most guys I train/spar with are 85 / 100. (187/220lbs) Usually employ your style of circling outside and blitz attack, but some days I just don't feel like being elusive. Then I stand and bang. Definitely not the smart choice, but it's what you said, they should be aware their attacks land so much harder! I take the bruises with pride 🤕😢😅
As a smaller guy who has had to spar bigger guys for the majority of my time. I definitely agree with the smaller guy should be able to go 75% and the bigger guy 50%. It’s only fair man.
Watched your video a couple weeks ago getting your blackbelt! Congratulations man! Well earned! I'm going to study now at a university, I hope I can have the same dedication in my studies as you have in your martial arts training 💪❤️
Jeff, I recommend you look into this technique I’ve never seen before. I recently got to know about a young Thai fighter by the name of Tawanchay. His teeps are the best I’ve seen by far. He uses them for offense, defense, close and long range. These teeps require insane amount of strength but once you learn it, I believe you can really overwhelm bigger guys like these in sparring. I highly recommend you look at his training footage. Oss!
Last year I visited Warrior Nation MMA, where I learned a valuable lesson: don’t stand and bang with bigger opponents!😂

Or a personal trainer, if you haven't done that already 😇.
Thanks so much for watching man!!!!
WOOOOO!!!! Beautiful my brotha! 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks man!
I miss that!!
Faking the leg into the same side straight punch is very interesting. I think you've got a sneaky KO in your arsenal with that.
thanks!!
Im just to short to go headhunting.
cheers!
I'm +/-73kg (160lbs) and most guys I train/spar with are 85 / 100. (187/220lbs)
Usually employ your style of circling outside and blitz attack, but some days I just don't feel like being elusive. Then I stand and bang.
Definitely not the smart choice, but it's what you said, they should be aware their attacks land so much harder!
I take the bruises with pride 🤕😢😅
true hahahahaha
Nice job!!Espescially at the end of the round!!!
thank you!
I interpreted his nodding as 'yes, that caught me good, that kick was good'
Who cares? the dude came right back and threw his own full power leg kick. Either way it was on after that.
As a smaller guy who has had to spar bigger guys for the majority of my time. I definitely agree with the smaller guy should be able to go 75% and the bigger guy 50%. It’s only fair man.
cheers!!
Watched your video a couple weeks ago getting your blackbelt! Congratulations man! Well earned! I'm going to study now at a university, I hope I can have the same dedication in my studies as you have in your martial arts training 💪❤️
thanks man!!
Bro your high kick was a form of art hahaha beautiful❤
Thank you!
What interaction did you have with him after? Also, is keeping your distance being just outside his range or outside his range in general?
Yes keeping distance is just being right outside the length of his arms. And nothing we just agreed to go lighter hehe
@@MMAShredded thank you very much
How tall is that guy? He definitely has the reach advantage, arms and legs. And not to go unnoticed but he has skills...
cheers!! and im not sure how tall
Love this Jeff Chan! Stay safe ❤
thanks man!
I love watching these, ty Jeff
no prob!!
That left head kick was excellent !
thanks!!
Oss!
yeah taiwancha is a beast!
really nice sparring. skillful, respectful🔥
thank you!
Good job Jeff
thanks!
