Ahh cant beat the age. I’m in my early 40s and just picked up boxing 3 weeks ago. Last time I trained thai boxing for a year (started for the 1st time) was 17 years ago. Then I stopped excercising pretty much. I feel so old and I am so unfit. But it’s all coming back to me and I just love the training. I train 3 days in a row. 2 classes 1 class 2 classes and it takes me 2 days to recover. I can barely move. My back gets so stiff that if I want to bend down my body squats instead. I’m in constant pain. But by Sunday/Monday I can begin to move again and can’t wait for Tuesday to start training. I just love it. Wish I started 5 years ago. Always pleasure to check your videos.
If you can you should try going to the gym every two days instead of three days in row. It gives your body one day to recover between each session. That's what I do and I don't feel any pain despite the sessions being very intense.

Jeff, if your opponent is going hard in sparring without mutual consent before the round. Do you recommend to match their intensity or stop and ask them to go light/technical? What route is better long-term to become a better fighter? Thanks.
If I’m doing multiple rounds and I only have to do one round with that person I just use it as an opportunity to work on my defence in a more fight like situation and use my front kick a lot. You demonstrate excellent arm and head control. One of my favorite things about striking is the subtle grappling that's involved at closer ranges. So many of their punching or movement ideas were completely stopped by your control over their own arms
Your bag of tricks is endless and tested. I think that frustrates other fighters who may have the fundamentals down but are unable to mix it up the way you do. You see that with the kid. Once you turned slippery he lost the confidence in his combos. Always inspiring stuff, Jeff
This guy is very good, especially for his age, and his creativity and speed are pretty incredible for the first half of the round. Once you were loosened up and (possibly) more comfortable sparring him, he seemed to lose quite a bit of what made him seem so great in the beginning.

He is really young. At 16, you're not mature yet, so it's not uncommon for young kickboxers this age to have a lack of restraint. The prefrontal cortex takes until 23 to fully develop, and it's inhibited during the teenage/puberty years, leading to more impulsivity.
Light sparring only works, if the other person takes it seriously. I light sparred with someone, who was crouching and letting me hit him continuously. There’s no benefit to that.

2 days ago, I sparred with a 16 years old, he was half-Japan, half-Turkish, he was a young excited kid who tried to take my head off, he had no technique, just moving forward and throwing power shots to the head, his punching power, speed and athleticism surprised me, I think his ancestors were samurais :) I rallied on more technique, I moved around him, slipped his punches, mixed it up with body shots, I landed more shots but my lips bled a litte bit and my forehead got red, I was also pissed off and hit him with hard shots, we only went a round, our coach stoppe us, then we shook hands and he apologized me, I smiled and praised to him advised him to use body shots and feints to be more unpredictable
That dude is very talented for a 16 year old but his ego is going to get the better of him down the line and he's gonna make stupid mistakes in fights, though you handled it well and kept him working without fighting his fight💪well done Jeff🔥

Hey Jeff, there is absolutely no excuse for him being agressive, BUT, in Belgium and Netherlands it's really common to have hard sparrings, for us this is normal. As always, love the content brother

First time viewer. You going easy on that young kid and being selective with your strikes was impressive. I think you taught him something in those exchanges pimpen. Good shit :)
Everybody bashing about the guy. But here are some clues as of why he is sparring hard (lets assume the best in ppl): the guy is Moroccan and does Kickboxing. His favortie style is probably (99% sure) Dutch Style kickboxing (a lot of moroccan fighters in Netherlands) . Also he might already know Jeff , lets nt forget that Jeff goes hard too sometimes so maybe the Moroccan feels like Jeff can take the hits and can give back. Anyway, Light sprring is obviously safer, but some ppl that love the Dutch style Kickboxing want to do as they do (Hard Sprring)
It's not all gyms in the Netherlands but it's a dutch thing to go hard in sparring. My time spent at Mike's gym prepared me and some other fighters for actual fights and not cozy sparring. Injuries do happen in sparring and it's a fine balance when you have a fight coming but sometimes, and I mean sometimes, some real hard sparring is needed to develope timing och techniques that work in fights.
Is it teenage fighters that are usually too aggressive? It could just be their immaturity. I noticed that in my old gym. The teenager kids didn't know how to control themselves.
Love your energy and awareness of partners' level. I had a sparring with national champion yesterday. Guess what, he went hard, I could feel every punches he sent haha. After a combo of 6 he sent me out of the ring. Couldn't understand why did he go that hard. Wish I could practise in your gym.
man, you really added the side kicks to your arsenal, so cool. and about the kid, the little experience I have with muay thai, is always the young ones that gave me the hardest shots, we all were teenagers once and we wanted to prove something, BUT it's fucked up when they want to prove something using agression, how will you explain to your boss that you can't walk well because some teenager got heated up and got full baseball-bat in your leg yesterday? I was training with a boy, 17 years old, pretty tall, around 5'11 to 6ft very experienced, and really strong for his weight, and he tried to land some stupidly strong karate-like front kick to my face, I somehow stopped using my arm, but I could feel the force behind it, and I would lose a teeth if landed, coaches have to get a eye on kids cuz sometimes they are a bit too full of themselvs.
Nice! Some head-games thrown at that kid tho, that's for sure lol. Watching him fall for those traps you set so you could disrupt his forward motion were stellar. Considering the body maintains its physiological reaction systems late into life with a degree of efficiency, this is kind of a textbook for fighting younger fighters; feints, tempo disrupts, and solid counters. Great job sir
I can't fathom how you keep yourself from getting to that point, the point where you say, I'm going knock this SOB out. Props to you on that. I guess that's the control part of MMA that we all have to add to our arsenal. You got a good flow to your movements Jeff 👏
fantastic sparring. Been following you ( and learning from you) for years! What a progression. And despite some opponents trying some powerful lucky shot, you still keep you cool and control. Super pro ! thank you for these absolute honest expressions of your art.
I seriously believe the young kid learnt many valuable lessons that day. I'm convinced that he noticed how you maintain composure and poise, how hes full on pace doesnt give him what he probably wanted and how your technical fighting style is having an effect on him. I think he probably had one of the best fighting lessons he'd experience just yet, maybe he dont realize it now but he will.
@Slick i've read some Morrocans commented that its just the way it is with them, personally i think its foolish but apparently its all they know, go hard or go home. But the fact the kid towards the end of the match slowed down alot and became, to me, obviously more calm I think he did have a bit of self-evaluation (plus hes probably was tired). He was also watching the rest of the fights which were a lot more slower paced and less intense. He was definitely observing and I dont think hes dumb.

so unfit.

Jeff, if your opponent is going hard in sparring without mutual consent before the round. Do you recommend to match their intensity or stop and ask them to go light/technical? What route is better long-term to become a better fighter? Thanks.
I have the same question!
If I’m doing multiple rounds and I only have to do one round with that person I just use it as an opportunity to work on my defence in a more fight like situation and use my front kick a lot. I’m been training 4 years tho and it’s usually the newer people that go hard so I’m normally not really in danger unless I switch off.
