As a Tesla Model Y owner, and one who recently took a long road trip in it, I offer the following pros and cons. Pros: (1) Fun to drive; (2) charge cost; (3) security system, etc. Cons: (1) vehicle cost and constant changes in cost; (2) auto pilot/windshield wiper: (2) phantom braking issue; (3) poor supercharge locations, especially if used at night; (4) and definitely customer service or lack thereof.

here's few more Cons which I'm missing in the video: no radar/lidar (which mean much worse parking assistance, high beam assistant, etc.), no lamp above back seats (because you have the glass on top), the glass roof (you need to turn up the AC because of it), rough suspension, worse sound isolation (you hear much more bumps while you drive), no blind-spot indicators in mirrors, no adjustable headrest, opening back hatch is difficult without an optional and expensive keyfob.

Just placed an order for the Model Y. Thought about some others, but pricewise with the rebate, the others are all more expensive. I was a bit worried about not having the driver cluster, but when I thought about it, really the only one that I use on my car now is the speed. And it is close enough on the center console that I do not think it will be an issue. My brother has had a Model 3 for a few years and he said you get used to it pretty quickly. I will give it a shot. I usually change cars every 4-5 years anyway, so I can drive this for a while and in 4-5 years the tech advances and selection should be huge.

Except for the fast drop in range, I haven’t experienced those con’s as much on my M3. Service here in Belgium is top notch. Biggest con for me is the stupid automatic windscreen wiping. My 2014 Volvo does a much better job. Also would be missing the likely better performing proximity sensors on the M3.

I'll definitely take a look at your Top 30 Crossover video after hearing your points on the cons for the Model Y. I've ridden in a Model 3 a year ago via Uber and instantly fell in love with the smooth driving through the NYC streets and even more so enamored with the security systems and protective protocols it had as the driver was kind enough to inform me on it's specifications as that was the first time I've ever been inside a Tesla. After looking at various videos from owners and enthusiasts I eventually went to the Tesla website and finally made the decision to aim for the Model Y. Especially since I have a big family and the 3 wouldn't be enough space for everyone. Thank you for mentioning the handle issue with extreme temperatures - other videos I've seen never mentioned that before.

Agree with all pros/ cons with some exception to the door handle. Other automakers did the same thing to be more aerodynamic. I live in the Great White North (Canada) and the handles do get frozen. BUT, you can use the phone app to unlock and open the door for you. It is an inconvenience but not a deal breaker from my end.

I'm still on the fence about what direction to go for a first EV. Charging network has me leaning towards a Tesla even though I don't like their aesthetics, lack of physical controls, etc. Model X seems like a better fit for me than the Y, but I'd have to look at a used car in that case. So your video was timely for me.
Some of your cons are on my list, but as you point out are addressable with 3rd party products (instrument cluster display, carplay, physical buttons and knobs). Need to look into reviews however.
Comments on some of your other cons
    - Range - most cars (ICE, hybrid, BEV) don't have real world range that matches EPA's numbers. For the Edmunds review, the Model Y wasn't far off. And all EVs are impacted by external factors - many worse than the Model 3.
    - Customer service - I guess I've never had great customer service with any car in the past so I have low expectations. Maintenance and repair costs would be a concern, though. But the typical numbers for a Model Y that I see on CAREdge and other sites seem reasonable.
    - Door handles. I rented a Model 3 in London. Seemed awkward at first, but I quickly got used to it and had no problem opening with one hand. Just have to use the correct hand or your thumb is in the wrong place.
Biggest cons for me with the Model Y (and 3) that you didn't mention and that don't have good 3rd party solutions:
    - Boring to look at from the outside
    - Has the stupid "minimalist" look on the inside I don't care for
    - Is not all that comfortable
    - Rides lower than I'd prefer for an SUV
    - Has subpar handling for it's price
    - Doesn't offer leather seats (call it "Vegan leather" if you want, it's still pleather)
If the Model X were 1/3 less expensive, it would be a no brainer choice for me.

    • @harmony3138

Agreed. Model Y and 3 are like boring old Fords of the new EV world, a shaped box of plastic with doors and wheels on it. Build qualy of S and X not so good at those prices.
Even the interior of Tesla cannot be more boring. With that giant iPad in the middle. They make them so cheap; they don't even give you an entire wheel to use. Upper portion gone.
You cannot open the glove compartment without using the touch screen. They say, great software, but hits the kerb on parallel parking. Yup, super-fast they are, and most electric cars are, but who is going to go super-fast every time from one stop light to another with the back full of groceries or toddlers in child-seat.
Despite one of the biggest market and having resources, the US has never made desirable quality cars like Germans, Italians, Japanese and even Chinese now. And better build quality, no leaking trunks, no hitting the kerb on parallel parking, ghost braking, fudging customers, overestimation of range.
The big legacy companies, are coming around to desirable EVs, cars with character and style, with good looks, with far better build quality, proven record with pedigree, customer care, and superior engineering like Taycan, i4, iX, Mercedes EQs, Audi e-trons etc, and more coming - behemoths move slowly :)

      @Jackie-Brown 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

U won’t have issues with controls on the screen. Remember 90% of your controls are set and forget. Car reviewers have issues with these problems bc the first thing they do is change the ‘set and forget’ controls everytime they enter a car, which makes sense. We also aren’t changing climate and steering wheel telescoping everyday. You and maybe one other person will be driving your car so all of these small nuances aren’t actual issues. They’re issues to a small group of reviewers that are out of touch with what people actually care about.

Great review Alex and all your points parallel some of the experiences friends of mine have with their Model 3 & Y.
We drive an Ioniq5 and absolutely love it, had a Kona EV before this and loved it as well. My wife and I drive usually a 1000km every week plus road trips. Yes the CCS charging networks are far from perfect but we manage to do our road trips without drama, as usual most of our charging is done at home.
Will never go back to a gas vehicle and never a Tesla, wife hates not having an instrument cluster in front of her and loves the Heads up Display on our I5.
In any case after friends drove our I5 (Tesla MY owners) they loved the fact that the ride was smoother and no interior squeeks or rattles, on the other side when I drove their MY I liked the stiffer suspension and better road feel but it was far noisier than our Ioniq5.
Oh well, all good, nice that there are options and we can chose what we want!

Am looking into the Y but, have reservations. The range thing, so the battery use of between 20% and, 80% equals 60% of usable range & couple that with the cold where I am would equal 20-30% reduction so my real range is 40% of say 300 miles equaling 180 miles range which is a NO deal.

The reason I will never buy a Tesla, at least until they fix this aspect, is the fact there are no Tesla garages. With Kia and Hyundai etc you can drive your car to a garage for an appointment and have it serviced/repaired while you wait. Tesla simply doesn't have that.

Great video. Spot on with the cons, and the pros. It was the charging network - and its reliability in comparison to the CCS options where I live and travel - that prompted me to still choose the Model Y. it just works - and unlike a lot of CCS charging location, Tesla charges aren't usually in a back alley like many CCS chargers. The range is an old bugbear, but blame the EPA not Tesla, they are only publishing the results of the EPA test procedure, when you navigate anywhere the car shows you very very accurate information on range and takes you to any charging required. I actually needed the first service in over 18 Months of owning my Model Y this week, the passenger door window was slightly out of position, I arranged service using the App, an appointment was made for two days time, the Tech rang next day and arranged to come that afternoon, cost was zero, you can't get better than that! @@kevinn1158 I was looking at that and the Model Y. It is much cheaper. So I was not sure if I wanted to spend less and get less, or spend more and get more. Probably would have gotten the Bolt EUV, except that they did not have the one I want anywhere in the state, and they said I could not order it because they would stop making them before they could produce it.

We had no trouble buying our Kona EV a year ago and then buying an Ioniq5 AWD Ultimate about 9 weeks ago, along with my brother in law who bought an Ioniq5 off the lot 3 weeks ago.
I agree availability can be kind of stupid but it is getting better. And there is no more 2 year waits that I can see, my niece just placed an order for a Kia EV6 about a week ago, due to arrive end of September...

here are some more cons for you.
0-60 is actually exaggerated because they use rollout measurements that is a method that nobody use in the industry. you can add 20% more seconds to the claimed figure.
no 360 camera, parking sensors, rain sensor, front camera, BLIS on the side mirrors, air vents, wiper stalk (replaced by one single button and pop up onscreen functions), speed LIM function, free key fob, rear cross traffic alert

Tesla is the VW bug of mass produced vehicles. EPA rated miles are like MPG, you know your mileage will vary (greatly) Vehicle quality may vary (Hugely) Pay for the FSD and get shoddy Auto Pilot that likes to run things over for who knows how long. Have a Service issue, while we dont recommend right to repair however we also cant support fixing all the crap we are continually pushing out of our factories.. Security is good unless you dont like being continually monitored via video. These cars suck power even when they are not being used and Tesla doesn't care, its on you. (No, you cant turn this crap off) California has a huge volume of Lemon Law Cases right now with Tesla. It would be interesting to see how Tesla stacks up in manufacturer buy backs.
