    Excellent video, Ryan! Thanks! My riding buddy and I have had our bikes on order for a couple months now and I'm really excited to ride it when it gets here. Really excited about the improvements/changes that were made too. Inverted front forks for example. Great design used on some really great downhill forks (Carnutt, Lefty) for years, and gives us a sprung rather than unsprung place to attach our extra water! Nice! Glad they also include the bash guards--very important to protect the stanchions from damage that can mess up the seals. I've talked to Eddie about the bike an he's been incredibly helpful, including with dimensions of the triangle for ordering the frame bag. Glad they have nailed them down and you posted them for all. I'd love to hear your thoughts about shifting with the Pinion gearbox now that your are doing more MTB'ing with it since getting back from the GDMBR. The drivetrain sounds bulletproof, but I'm wondering how much of an adjustment it is for shifting on climbs, etc.? Thanks again for getting this video out and for working with the Priority, Pinion and Gates teams to put this machine together! Pete

    • @duzer
      @duzer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Pete!!
      Psyched to hear that you'll be rocking the 600x!
      Thumb shifters are a bit of an adjustment for mountain biking, cause you're firing through gears much faster than you would commuting. I got used to it while riding Durango to Moab last year for 7 days. Even on steep uphills, it's fine, you either shift before you hit the hill, or lay off for a micro-second mid hill and you'll be fine. You'll get the hang of it pretty quickly.
      Enjoy the bikes!!

      Adding a quick question. You mentioned that the dynamo hub has been removed from the setup. I (and I am sure there are others that agree) feel that a dynamo hub has value. I have used them for years and would want one on any touring bike I use. Will there be an option to include one? If not, would there be any issue with replacing the stock hub with something like a Schmidt (SON 28 15 110) front hub with the Wren fork? This might be a question for the guys over a Wren.

    • @duzer
      @duzer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really wanted the dynamo to be the solution to all my charging woes, but it just didn’t perform. There are more expensive models that might do the trick, and yes, you could easily add it on, but priority won’t have that option.

Watching your Great Divide trip I finally saw the bike I had to acquire. I had been debating with myself on the merits of buying a Priority 600, but when you previewed the 600X you sealed the deal I finally saw the bike that was going to meet multiple applications of a winter snow bike, bike packing, mountain bike, and extreme gravel.

Unfortunately, and you’ll have to blame John and Mira for this, I’ve placed an order with Salsa. I didn’t go with the Blackborow, but the Beargrease will do me fine. I gotta say it's a sweet looking ride. I'm not sure the extra one-kg (2.2 pounds) for the Pinion gearbox is worth it, but no maintenance on the ride is nice. Also I don't need the front shock. I have 27.5+ with 2.8 rangers. I run 10-15PSI on rocky terrain and I get all the "suspension" I need from that. The bike is really a good deal particularly when you compare it to co-motion which would be almost double the price. Good review!

We both have down-payments for the 600X, we expect to ride the Divide next year in July so your GDMBR video series was very enjoyable to watch. I have one obvious suggestion - so obvious that I don't know why I even have to mention it.... The model name of the bike is currently 600 X - kinda boring. I really like all of the work, improvements, and collaboration that came into this bike. I've been a reservation holder for a couple weeks now thanks to your videos and will hopefully get a copy of this bike when it comes in production in Q1!
    Personally I feel that this ticks all the boxes for the perfect bike and the modularity means that you can customize it. Eventually the plan is to electrify this bike when battery and motor prices come down a little. I think that the pinion and belt drive system can take the extra strain... But it's just an idea and I'm sure I'll find the pedal assist alone to be sufficient.
    Really think this is a game-changing bicycle that will probably be copied a ton by the big biking companies when the release is successful.

    I love the gear ratio from pinion, the simplicity of the belt drive from gates, and the many attachment points, and the wren forks. It's got to be a labor of love for you to design, test, and be able to give your final approval on a design that meets the everyday rider, as well as the hardcore enthusiast who spends hundreds of miles on trails. And you're right. It's a pretty penny. But you can't do better with the same options elsewhere. And keeping the setup as minimalistic and as reasonably light (and strong) as possible is great, for not only the potential heavier rider, but also for more gear to be stowed on the bike.

  • @ericpmoss
    @ericpmoss 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I love the Wren -- the Lefty's inverted design is part of what makes it so responsive.

    • @peglor
      @peglor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Running needle roller bearings instead of bushings for the sliding elements was what made the Lefty so good (Until any contamination at all got into the bearings and they started rusting). The Marzocchi Shiver is probably a better comparison as this has the benefit that the oil bath in the fork was permanently sitting on the fork bushings, so everything stayed as perfectly lubricated as possible. However, the Wren appears to be a closed oil bath fork, based on the damper, so lubrication may be no better than current closed bath right side up forks, so all you've got is the lower unsprung weight offset by significantly more steering flex, which is the reason most forks are not laid this way.
      A huge benefit upside down forks offer for bikepacking is that when you mount things on the fork legs they're part of the sprung weight rather than unsprung, so the suspension works better rather than worse as weight is added. The benefit to right way up forks in this scenario is that you don't need to change the suspension pressure to account for weight added to the fork legs. Other benefits are steering stiffness as mentioned earlier, and that leaking oil from the fork seals will take longer to contaminate the disk because it has to run down a lot more fork leg do get there, so it gives you a better chance of spotting it and wiping it away before an issue arises.
      All my forks die due to bushings wearing out and the cost to send them for bushing replacement, combined with the replacement charge itself is usually too close to the cost of buying another completely new fork to justify continuing with the existing one and waiting for a fatigue failure, so if replacing the fork bushings in the Wren is straightforward they might have another customer - the Wren website making no mention whatsoever of bushing replacement makes me suspect they're no better than anyone else in this regard. Old Marzocchi Bombers had fork bushings you could replace by hand with no special tools at all - a flat head screwdriver was about as much as was needed - if they're doing this then they'd probably be shouting it from the rooftops though.
      I'm really waiting for the likes of the Lauf leaf spring forks, which potentially are maintenance free as they have no moving parts, only flexing parts, to hit the 400-600 dollar range (Which shouldn't be a problem given their mechanical simplicity compared to everything else) so I can ditch all the overcomplicated shenanigans involved in telescopic forks altogether.

    2020 Is the year I discovered bike packing. Due to Covid-19 restriction and because I am a broke student I didn't have the money to go on a traditional vacation. I did two trips during my summer break. I cycled from the northern tip of the Netherlands to the south +- 300miles. The second trip was a few weeks later because I liked it so much. I cycled from Austria, trough Switzerland, trough Germany back to my home in the Netherlands +-620Miles in 10 days. If I had not found your channel I (and my cousin which I managed to convince to join me) probably wouldn't have gone on such a trip so, thank you for that. I did both trips on my 'Gazelle Medeo city 64-inch' city bike which is not made for anything of off-road, but it survived non the less. the Priority 600x looks like an awesome bike which I hopefully can afford one day. I just watched "Bikes of Wrath" last night about five Aussies who decided to come to the US to ride Route 66 described in John Steinbeck's book.
      On NUMEROUS occasions, their loaded bikes fell over! It became a recurring theme in the documentary.

    id love to fit a 36v 250w geared hub motor on the rear of one of these with the pinion gearbox and turn it into a camping beast. At like 52v 10A max, with a decent battery and conservative throttle use, you could get 2 days out of a charge and have a unique bike. I've been setting my 36v hub motors up with 52v batteries and controllers, but instead of running the original 15a max at 36v (540w), i limit the controller to 10A at 52v (520w). Gives a top speed of 43kph vs the original 30, but has less kick off the line, and smoother delivery, alongside less strain on the battery. It makes it feel more like a bike. With my 30ah battery, no PAS, and conservative throttle use i got 146km out of one charge over 2 days, and the battery doubled as a power bank for my lights, phone, speaker and tablet at the same time. When i get to my camp site, i can set up a few lights and run them off my battery for some basic comfort while setting up. It doesn't really make riding that much easier as its underpowered. I still suffer, but i find that i arrive at my designated campsites that hour or so earlier every day, suffer less cramps, and have a convenient way to charge electronics and lights.
    If i could find a torque sensor equipped bottom bracket, i would be over the moon.

    I am a Rohloff rider on a Surly troll, which is very good for off-road riding and touring thanks to low maintenance like pinon gear box.
    However, I find the Rohloff having quite a lot of friction inside the hub and is noticeable when spinning the wheel compared with a traditional hub.

    Great review Ryan!
    I live in a flat area and my suggestion to Dirk from Pinion would be to make a 2nd version of the Pinion gearbox with 12speeds BUT with closer ratios (less than 17% per gear). I don't need super low gears where I am so a "road version" of the Pinion box (in addition to the existing 'adventure version') would be great! All they need to do is change the ratios inside the box, very little extra R&D required. This could be a BIG SELLER for them if they manufacture it in volume and got it installed on some big manufacturers road bikes. If you could pass on my suggestion, thanks.

      It’s a great feeling to kick out the kick stand!

    So cool to have a Wren fork on your 600x. I have worked with him and Russ for a number of years at my festival. They have been super supportive at local little fests by supporting with donations and having a booth to inform riders. I would love to have a Wren fork on both my bikes as I feel they are way ahed of the curve and game in suspension. I would give my left kidney for one of these forks. Plus i amy have to sell my ht plus bike to buy the Priority bike

    Hi Ryan, first let me say that you've been a real inspiration for me. I can watch your videos for days. And I've learnt a great deai from it. So, my first real bikepacking trip was a huge succes thanks to you. The thing I miss is the "Get Out There" logo on your bike. I'd like to use it on mine and would like your approval to do so. I hope you agree.
