Eric Whitacre's Deep Field - A Tribute in Images

  • In 1995, the Hubble Space Telescope captured one of the most influential and humbling images in history - the Hubble Deep Field. The image covers a speck of the sky only about the width of a dime seen from 75 feet away. The exposure lasted 10 consecutive days, or approximately 150 orbits.
Though the field is a very small sample of the heavens, it is considered representative of the typical distribution of galaxies in space, because the universe, statistically, looks largely the same in all directions. Gazing into this small field, Hubble uncovered a bewildering assortment of at least 1,500 galaxies at various stages of evolution.
Deep Field was premiered with the Minnesota Orchestra & Minnesota Chorale on 8 May 2015 in Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis, conducted by Eric. The second performance & European premiere took place at the BBC Proms on 9 August at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Singers & BBC Chorus, once again conducted by Eric.
To create a sound worthy of the Deep Field images, Eric had the idea to take advantage of the speakers in the room - the phones of his fans. For a composition this ambitious in scope, Eric felt that he’d need to include everyone in the audience. So instead of reminding his audience to turn off their phone for the performance, he directs them to pump up the volume and play along.

I sang on this one. My name's in the credits at the end. This old lady used my cheapo cellphone and videoed myself in one take and sent it off to Eric. He is way ahead of his time! This video also resides in the Smithsonian Institute!

This has potential for a great sci fi movie and when the choir comes in. Goosebumps. Images are fantastic

Music that beautifully describes the human wonderment when considering the vastness and enormity of the universe......how small we feel...... yet our brains are the most complex thing we know ....and although the universe is vast.....it's processes are simple compared to us

I just love the music of Eric Whitacre. when I awoke after the last chords of 'sleep' , I was illuminated by 'Sure on this shining night', my choice of all his works. Classics such as 'When David heard' and. 'Cloudburst' haunt me! Thanks youtube once again!

For me it's one of the Eric's greatest pieces - I love those intense, ecstatic build-ups. I also wonder if Whitacre was in some way inspired by Gyorgy Ligeti's pieces such as Atmospheres or Lontano. Especially the timbre of woodwind/brass clusters sounds similar to me. Thank you for this upload!

I remember laying in the snow, making snow angels with my childhood friend, Theresa. I could hear the snow crunching in my ears as I lifted my shoulders and arms to create the Angel's Wing on the freshly, fallen snow. I could see the clouds partying in the darkened sky, and the wonderment of the beautiful stars twinkling from afar off, like diamonds in black velvet. It all seemed surreal. The cold, bite of the snow beneath me, and the beckoning light that flickered waaaay up there in the cold, deepness of space, saying to me, You are not alone. That's what this music reminds me of.

I have always enjoyed the music of Eric Whitacre, and this is a brilliant concept, which is quite enjoyable. I did feel however that the sequence of astronomical images faltered from time to time, and I have viewed much smoother transitions in other such inspired videos, but nevertheless an inspirational video :)

The coughing in this vid is nothing compared to when I first heard this and the woman next to me was talking over the entire performance. It took all of my concentration to not commit murder that night...

You should have turned around to the woman who would not stop talking and stared her in the eye ...and told her politely "if you want to have a
      conversation then go outside"
If not ...then shut the fuck up !!!!!

Hello Mr Whitacre yes it's me again. Look I'm going to go ahead and say what it is I have to say and I'm going to try not to take up too much of your time and hopefully by some chance you'll get a chance to read this or whatever the case may be. But what I'm going to say is that at some point you need to re-release this stuff or remaster it and put it back out there I know you had it on TH-cam and all these other online accounts and that's great but this stuff is got to go further than this and what I mean is that I know you have been noticing this world and all the people that you see in the fear and the fight that people are having with this pandemic. I have been in music and Ministry all of my life but it is something about the music that you write that keeps me and probably thousands of others coming back to, it coming back to it and for whatever reason that is I just don't know. But I will say this God has given you something special and all I can say is that I wish in my heart of hearts that I could write and arrange like you. but you know there's an old saying he who has great ability also has great responsibility!! Look whatever it is you have to do get this stuff to every planetarium to every IMAX theater to whatever you need to do because right now this is the stuff that people really need to hear . it puts you in the mind of being at Heaven's Door weigh and right now this is what people really need this is good stuff man it's great stuff please sir don't stop take this stuff man as far as you can take it!! as we say in my neck of the woods let the Lord use you!! look I'm done saying what I have to say and I hope I didn't bore you too much but I just wanted to say that because it was in my heart to say that to you you are probably one of the greatest this generation has ever seen and heard by all means man please keep it up Don't Stop we need stuff like this and we need composers like you because you give us inspiration. Look sir take care and be safe and to all of the choir members will the virtual or your singers and you to be safe don't let this pandemic take out any more of us than it has taken we got more work to do and at some point hopefully I get a chance meet you,, just shake your hand and say that's what I'm talkin about,,! God bless you brother keep up the good work.

omg, what a cheap creativity is done here by the composer. what a youtube-kind-a piece of music is this? huble telescope did first-rate job, not can I say about the composer. and what's next - to connect our blood vessels to the composer's computer and dream his dreams, breath his air? people are educated, people are smart and hate to be cheap.

As a composer of orchestral and choral music myself I am fully aware of what Eric has created here, and it is true to his creative soul and is a major achievement. I applaud him for capturing the harmonies of the spheres. You, Sir, have exposed yourself to be a pompous ass. "Pro" musician, hardly..
