FUNCHAL, MADEIRA - Welcome to Funchal, the little known capital of Madeira, Europe's most breathtaking island. Funchal is packed with history, beautiful architecture, vibrant bars and best of all, delicious food. In this video I will give you a walking tour of this amazing city and show you some of the BEST food and places to eat in Funchal. The food on Madeira Island is so good and I cannot wait to show you. I begin the day with breakfast and coffee from a cool little cafe. I try a couple of local pastries, a queijada (sweet cream cheese pastry) and a pão de deus (a sweet sticky brioche).
Next, I head to the fish market, stopping off on the way to try a famous Madeiran spiced honey cake which has been made the same way since 1893.
After wandering the fish market and strolling through the Old Town of Funchal which is filled with street art, the temptation for grilled fresh fish became too much. I found myself a little snack bar to try some fish from the market. I spotted the chef looking through the fish market, so I knew the fish was fresh and it did not disappoint, it is the best place for grilled fish in Funchal.
After a little more sightseeing I stopped off to try the traditional prego (steak sandwich). Crispy stone-baked bread, garlic butter, juicy steak and salad, the best prego I had tried in Funchal.
Finally, I needed something sweet, I visited an artisan chocolate shop who make handmade chocolates and ice cream, inspired by Madeira. This was simply the best ice cream in Funchal, maybe even ever.

@@hungrytoexplore the best food, im portuguese by the way, but i had never been to Madeira.I went to the places you mentioned and more, i stayed at Enotel.I had snacks at "tapas y copas".Had the best lapas at ocean lounge at Porto Moniz.
Dined at A vista restaurant, had lunch at "St Antonio Restaurante" at estreito de Câmara for the best skewer in all Madeira.Had dinner at "A Gruta"at the marina.
Dined at the Restaurant with the best food ever, with a hell of a chef "Restaurante Lá ao Fundo"
For the best biscuits went to "Fábrica de Santo António "

You're going to love it. It's such a beautiful island. For me, the best food is outside of Funchal though so make sure you venture out.
For meat, try La Vaca Negra (a bit far from the city centre but it's worth it). For unique old fish recipes, Jaquet in Rua de Santa Maria. For picados (Madeiran Tapas), Banana's Pub.

A very enjoyable romp through the eateries of Funchal. Can't wait to return, possibly at Christmas if the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. You have reminded me that visiting the more rustic places for a snack or meal can quite often be better than the glitzy glass and chrome establishments. Well done Joe . . . .

Live this video, a few familiar places plus a few new ones to try on our next visit, I so need to try thise chocolates.
We loved Bar no 2 when we stayed at the Pestana Carlton on our first trip to Maderia, considerably cheaper than the hotel bar , with a great vibe, and as you say the Prego is just delicious .
Also check out Bar Caracas in the old town, a fantastic tiny locals bar, we drank lots of Coral Tonica, the dark beer, and were plied with free pork tapas . Can't wait to return.

I'm traveling to Funchal in three weeks, appreciate your food tour! I think I'll be trying all of your recommendations, but maybe not all in one day as you did (too many calories for me, lol). Planning on doing a lot of hiking also, to work off all of the good food, and thanks for sharing, good job!

Hiking is definitely something to do when you are there, the levadas are stunning.

Hey - thanks for the kind comments, it is great to read such positive words. It was actually my first test video and I used a GoPro Hero 9. I think it is ok to get a feel for vlogging like this, but you definitely need a more capable camera. I have got myself a Canon M50ii and just arrived back in Madeira, so will be making more videos soon.

I spent the whole of 2020 here and then regularly since at different times. There isn't a bad time to visit. October will be fantastic - don't worry.

Awesome! Well, breakfast is a tricky one because it isn't really a big thing there. Most people just have a quick coffee and pastry. So any bakery, including a confeitaria in the video is a good option. But Prima Caju is also nice, it does nice pancakes and muesli bowls. The Loft is another which does similar things. Same with Three House, which does great coffee too and has a wonderful view. Art Corner Cafe may also interest you. But there isn't a 'traditional' Madeiran breakfast as such.

Haha no! I’ve never paid for any subs or views! Everything has been organic. I had the five star chicken video blow up and give me a lot of views which I think damaged the balance of the channel.
the only thing I can see on there is the channel category is wrong... it is down as "people" when everyone else is down as "Travel" despite me categorising every video as travel
the only thing I can think of beyond - "YT hates me" (which isn't very constructive) is that that huge viral five star video messed things up in a big way, but also many other videos which properly took off. essentially with people only interested in that one video. So my core audience is actually very small. so when I post, it recommends it to people who just do not care anymore, stats drop and it doesn't push it out to find a new audience like it should

In general Madeira's food is terrible. It looks great but it is completely tasteless.
That is a bold statement, I think like anywhere, you need to go to the right restaurants. But there is certainly good food to be found here.
@@hungrytoexplore I am not so sure. I am convinced that local ingredients are of good quality but every time we tried anything in different places of the island it was average to low. Most of the times dissapointing because they use almost no vegetables and spices.
@@Succuub You are right that the local ingredients can be really good quality, especially the fruit, veg and the fish. I agree with you that I would love there to be more exotic spices. It is strange there is not more in the food culture given that Portugal had a big influence on the spice trade. But this culture is not about that, it is about simplicity, and when you have good quality ingredients, it is delicious. I am back on the island and will be making more videos of the places I really like, so maybe keep an eye out and we can compare.
