MADEIRA, PORTUGAL - MadMarket restaurant serves some of the best Portugal food in Funchal, Madeira and is one of the best places to eat in Madeira.
Tucked away in an unexpected location, an old shopping centre, it would be easy to turn away or miss it all together. You aren't just going to stumble across this place, you need to know about it and trust me, you definitely want to know about it.
The inside of the restaurant is beautiful, so don't be put off as you walk through the dreary shopping centre.
It's a restaurant, food market, gift shop and wine store, but you should be coming here for the food, because it serves the best Portuguese food in Madeira and portions are BIG!
The menu showcases regional Portuguese food from all over Portugal, not just Madeiran food. If you want to try something new or just have a great quality meal, this is the place to come.
    Dishes I ordered:
    Cheese & Sausage Board
    Grilled Mussels with Coriander
    Alheira Sausage
    Roast Octopus
I finish up with a tip for where to find some delicious ice cream.

Joe, you are such an incredible food connoiseur. You bring the dishes vibrantly alive...the subleties of the colours, tastes and textures. This is so precious for me as due to a healthl condition I am now fed through a NG tube so no longer have any these culinary pleasures for myself. No need to feel sorry for me though. I am so grateful to the medics for being alive.
I love the way you take your time with eating the food, savouring the flavours. You are so articulate in describing the dishes. You have such amazing vocabulary.
You are the best foodie on You Tube. I always look forward to the next download. Please keep up your global adventures, bringing us tasty delicacies from around the world. X

thank you! I am happy you enjoyed the video and you cannot connect with it, although these were my first ever videos and a little cringey. I hope you enjoy the newer ones too, there are plenty more to come from Madeira too once I leave Asia. South Korea next... then back to Europe

Hi Joe, I am coming to Madeira with my wife next year and we will be trying out all your recommendations. Keep up the excellent work, I really like your composed and laid back style when you talk about the food, and you always find the right words to convey the taste. Cheers!

Wow, MadMarket restaurant is a hidden gem that shouldn't be missed! This video does a great job of showcasing the beautiful interior and mouth-watering Portuguese cuisine that they offer. It's refreshing to see a restaurant that goes beyond the usual tourist fare and offers authentic regional dishes. Kudos to Joe for highlighting this gem in Madeira and giving us a taste of what to expect.

Hi Joe just ate at this restaurant following your recommendation on our first night in Madeira, while family really loved it! We will definitely come back at least once more before we leave, thanks for showing us this hidden gem, it’s really tucked away!

Hi Andrew, I am very happy to hear that! Glad those old videos are still of use, if not the most polished and high quality haha. I was certainly learning the ropes of filming and editing then (I am still now haha). It is a great restaurant. I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay.

Another great video Joe. I love Indian food and ate three times at India Gate in town centre. Tried other stuff on the painted door street and my sister joined us one evening (won’t mention the restaurant name). She chose something with pork and a pasta mixed with breadcrumbs. She wasn’t too sure how it would be but in her mind she imagined something nice. The look on our faces when this plate arrived with a huge lump of (to be blunt it looked turd shaped) stuff and a third of the plate a mound of what looked like thick mango pickle. That was the pork in some kind of sauce. My sister nearly threw up at the sight of it. To me it looked like hard work to even have a mouthful. The turd shaped thing was the mashed pasta mixed with breadcrumbs and sister said it just had this heavy paste texture that was not pleasing. The waiter could not understand when my sister said she could not eat it. He offered her to choose something else but she had lost her appetite. Even now thinking of it it makes me a bit queasy. How she longed for the India Gate. The chef came out and then the owner who said she would not charge for it. We were the only customers! She ended up having a McDonalds! It gave us a story.

Thank you for the positive comment again, I am glad you enjoyed it. I haven't eaten at India Gate, perhaps next time. Haha that does sound like quite an ordeal, there's nothing worse than a bad meal. That is why I try and show places which cook with passion and love. It makes my day to have a meal like that, hopefully it helps make yours too.

haha my expanding belly isn't thankful for it. I used to feel guilty if I didn't finish. Now I am smarter and take away what I don't eat or just leave it. In those videos, I was eating it all haha. Glad you like the videos. Those old ones right at the beginning are a bit cringy for me. The newer ones are far better haha, I must go back to Madeira and film again. I hope you enjoy your trip, it will be awesome.

Alheira never is made with pork. Usually with poultry. It's famous as the "Jewish" sausage.

    • @hungrytoexplore
      @hungrytoexplore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey! Thanks for the comment. I don't think it's never made with pork, you can definitely buy it at the supermarket with pork, and I just went by what the waiter said for that dish. But... Your comment made me look into the history in more detail and it is fascinating in how it originated, next time I show it, in its whole form, I'll certainly offer that story as narrative, so thanks for making me aware. Merry Christmas.

Alheira can be made with many different types of meat (rabbit, chicken, partridge, etc...) except pork.
Alheira is a "sausage" invented by the new Christians in Portugal (Jews).
