    You just confirmed my largest concern with Sikkens (now PPG). The prep required in 10 years when I neglect to apply another coat in a few years! I used Cabot Astr. Timber Oil when I first installed my Cedar siding and it held up pretty well. Pretty faded 10 years now but I can't complain. One thing I do like is that it does not have a polyurethane or nail polish film. Going to be re-staining this year. What stain do you commonly use with good results that doesn't form a film?
    Great video by the way!! Much appriciated!

    Thanks for the content man. We bought a log home in the Appalachian mountains five months ago and I'm stripping and staining this spring. We loved the subtle VapCap plug 😏.

    May not see this but how would this process work with a metal roof? It wouldnt stain the metal?

    I currently have Benjamin Moore Arborcoat exterior oil-based semi-solid stain on exterior pine accent logs on my home. It has been on my logs for about 2 years. It still looks great, no peeling, no chipping, just some fading. I tried applying Benjamin Moore Woodluxe oil-based semi-solid stain over the existing stain in a test area, but it did not seem to cover well, after about one month there were areas that looked like it had washed off. All of the instructions for stains these days seem to call for removal of the existing stain, getting down to bare wood. This is next to impossible for for me to do.
    Is there an oil-based semi-solid stain that I can apply directly over the existing oil-based semi-solid stain without having to strip the logs to bare wood?
    Is it possible that the Woodluxe did not cover well because the existing Arborcoat is not sufficiently weathered to accept new stain?
    Any ideas?

    Great job! How much water does it take to strip the wood?

    After stripping do you recommend the Sikkens 123 (3 step process) or their SRD one-step?

    • @KuehlIndustrial
      @KuehlIndustrial 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t recommend Sikkens for any exterior wood.

      @@abrammatthew756 I’ve stripped way to many homes over the last 20 years that were failures with Sikkens. Also way overpriced in my opinion.

    • @KuehlIndustrial
      @KuehlIndustrial 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what your looking for as an end result. The 123 process is a film forming finish (like nail polish) that will flake and peel over time. The srd is a penetrating stain and will simply fade out and not flake or peel. Hope this helps

      @KuehlIndustrial 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@abrammatthew756 I would try wolman deck strip asr (acrylic stain remover). Yes the sikkens is similiar to the Australian Timber Oil.

      @@abrammatthew756 you can also try ABR -American building restoration products out of Wisconsin. They make a product called fast finish remover. It is really just a form of LYE. It is easy to work with on flat surfaces (decks) but vertical surfaces need to have the product continually applied (don’t let it dry).

      Not really- Cold water will work-just takes a bit longer and you will use more chemical.
