Great!! I'm just a dumb rock bass player, but it happened that I'm blessed to make some nice music with a great singer and now this tune came to our setlist. So I was able to "not screw the song" - but when our jazzy pianist asked "bass solo??" - tilt ... no idea what's going on here. So I'm a fretboard guy, but things like chords and scales - I understand better on keys ... strange. So Your video opened my mind really. So first I understand this progression - great, and maybe I will be able to play _some_ solo on this progression (that is OK - hey, I'm just a rock bass player 😂) without screwing the progression. Hey Jonny... Love the videos. Just wondered. On AUTUMN LEAVES CYCLE OF FIFTHS you use F# MINOR instead of F MAJOR and E MINOR instead of E MAJOR. Is that just a different version of a cycle of fifths? 🤔
Surely using the harmonic minor over the last 3 chords would outline the Bm7-5 though? The melodic minor changes the Bm7-5 to Bm7 (i.e. the 2 chord of A major).
thanks for the tutorial! one question, the A melodic minor over E7 is really the E mixolydian b6 scale. I've heard often that this is not a good scale choice because the b6 goes a bit against the dominant sound. how would you the describe the feeling of that scale?
I've been studying piano since 2001, first 6 years, with a teacher … and i … agree with last comments for others there except KevinR ruiters, i'm not that crazy ! lol … when i want to to teach myself to go the next step in progression of piano playing, i'm Learning more in 1 minute of playin than in dozens hours of video on the web, or even with a professor right now… cuz, i'll seek to improve either harmony anderstanding and knowing ( knowing that I know is really knowing Something ) or dexterity ( swithching double into triples next riff ) checking if I'm warmed as i thought, or therefore, warming up more, or trying Something else then… by example, how fit the timber of an Instrument with the timber of another one, constructing a melody, and harmonizing it, then, orchestrating, using harmony knowledges in the sequencer… etc … ) it dépends of what you want to improve… for ears I bet on solying improvising waves… darkwave or not, swithching, what is important is to remember to chord name, to not miss in the position while arpegiating ;o) so many methods, why not, 1 per person as best, and others from other people than ourself, not bad at all !
this should be called impro with 2 scales over first 8 bars od Fly me ... since after these 8 bars the progression doesn´t simply repeat and these 2 scales might not fit into the new chords. Mostly they do though.
Cycle of 4ths and the cycle of 5ths are the same,, just different directions. I prefer to call 4ths because I associate forward movement with going upward, which is closer to how guitar thinks ( I started on guitar ). See my comment above. And no, Oyla, he's not making a mistake, he's just going down instead of up. When you say Am7 - D7 is a fifth, you are going Down from A - to D, ( A is a fifth up from D ) , but forward movement is A to D, so up a fourth seems the easier way to look at it, so I agree with you.
I know everyone likes to call it a 'cycle of fifths' but to get to fifths, you have to go down. ??? It is both a cycle of fourths and a cycle of fifths. Example, G is a fifth above C when you ascend. Count up C-D-E-F-G. But the octave C is a fourth above G when you count back down C-B-A-G. At first confusing but simply the same note! But the fifth note of the scale resolving downwards is the fundamental principle of Western music.

It took me 30 years and your videos to understand that Fly Me To the Moon is the ideal entry point into jazz piano :) - it’s almost too logical.
Actually I think Autumn Leaves is a better entry tune but Fly Me to the Moon and Shadow of Your Smile are close second choices

(A- to D7 is a movement of 4ths etc)
