Its hard to say Final Fantasy V is completely forgotten. There has been a dedicated and growing community of people participating in the Final Fantasy V Four Job Fiesta every summer for over a decade!
Awesome video! I rented it (in France) nearly 25 years ago, and I was surprised to see a Final Fantasy OVAs. I'm ashamed to say that I copied it onto my own VHS before returning it, and I watched it several times after that. It's not the best story, but at the time it was magical to have an obscure anime in my possession. I never realized it was a follow-up to Final Fantasy V, as I played it a year later. I just assumed the story was somewhat similar, but nothing more. Cheers from France!
Really surprised to hear we ever had it in France, since I think the first Final Fantasy game we got there was 7. (And afaik the first official French translation was with the GBA games.) How's the French dub?
@@shytendeakatamanoir9740 Yes you're right , it's weird that we've had a VHS release before any game in France. I think FF7 was released in 1998 here, and thanks to emulation and fan translation, I played Final Fantasy IV, V and VI in French as early as 1999. I think it was also in 1999 that I discovered and rented the VHS. The French dub is not great, you can hear it on TH-cam (search for Final Fantasy La Légende des Cristaux VHS).
I remember finding this at Blockbuster Video shortly after playing FFV in ‘98 or ‘99. I was ecstatic that there was a sequel to (what would become) my favorite game of all time. But-I only found the first video, not both. I recall being upset that major characters were killed off after FFV proper. And I still have no clue how it ends.
>Which resulted in the confusing renumbering Wet streets cause rain. FF4 had already been renamed to FF2. FF6 was renamed to FF3 later. The real reason the numbers got screwed wasn't because of 5, it was because of 2 and 3.
Yeah, I remember these OVAs. I wish I had purchased them on VHS when I had the chance but I didn’t have the money as I was just a broke high school kid at the time. I probably would have loved it. FFIV also has a sequel called “FFIV the after years” that most people kinda forget exists. I think it was a digital only release. I still have it on the Wii. Lol
I can remember seeing previews for this on old Urban Vision anime VHS tapes. Only until recently did I actually watch it. I thought it was a decent OVA! Great video!
I played it as it was first coming out. It was great to see the progression of expressiveness they were able to achieve during the SFC era. Each game out did the last and it was such a great time to be an RPG fan before the 3D came in.
It's not a true Final Fantasy V sequel unless the characters look nothing like their concept art. The concept art was always "off" in the NES and SNES games, but FFV was the one where you actually need labels to have any idea who is supposed to be who. Only Krile and Galuf bear a passing resemblance to their concept art. No one else does. You know, most Final Fantasy games have some pretty world-changing events at the end of the game, so I'm kind of surprised that more of them don't have distant sequels. Final Fantasy 3, 5, 6, and 7 all have events that massively change the geography of their respective worlds. 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 have massive geopolitical changes. The first game sees the whole planet getting a 2,000-year cosmic ret-con that makes you wonder what the new/restored timeline gave us and how our heroes will adapt to their new world. Or maybe it was their original world. Who can tell?
Final Fantasy concept art is so useless, I heard that when making Final Fantasy 6, they designed the sprites first, then told the artist to make concepts of the already existent sprites. And even then, they couldn't get some of the characters right.
@critterwyatt Hahah thanks! I remember going to the theater to see it on day 1 as a teenager and walked out at the end like "What the frik was that trash?" Lol
Don't spread it, it's literally a delusion you (and possibly me, or "us") is having. While creating animes sounds good, it's better to make stuff like this in the current time, by saying this non-anime existed in the 90s it'll make you delirious. Wouldn't be so bad if it came out in modern times, but this is apparently a re-dressing, it'll fuck ur head up. Becareful man, trust me. I destroyed my brains with drugs and acid and its not brain damaged im just enlightened so listen to me
Just binged this, had lots of laughs from the entertaining and likable characters, or the just bizarre moments that kept it from being boring. The animators and dub actors seemed like they had a blast making this. Thanks for spreading awareness of it!
It was also one of my first animes! 🤩 I had never even played a FF game before seeing it (FF 7 was the first game to get a release here in Australia) but I adored this weird cartoon and watched it over and over again, without even understanding its link to the games.
Just happened upon your channel while looking to get back into FF classics, and I wanted to say that your content is very entertaining 👍. Subs will definitely come. Subscribed.
I remember watching this in my friend's house when I was in middle school. I hadn't yet played FFV, so I thought it was just this weird, unconnected thing. The fan service REALLY threw us.
I had the VHS tapes for these too bag in the 90s. Anime was hard to come by for me back then so was excited when I saw the VHS tapes for these at an EB Games in my local mall.
I am pretty sure I owned it back in the day on VHS when I was in maybe sixth grade. I'm pretty sure it was a set of two, with maybe 4 episodes total? No idea where it is today. it was pretty cool besides some of the awkward parts... eventually I put it together that it was based on FFV, which I had only played on rom back then using some partially finished translations. I tried playing the playstation version but I couldn't get into it. Want to try again at some point.
This was one of my favorite things as a kid. Before this, FFV only existed to me as a soundtrack as my Japanese wasn't really good enough to grasp the full meaning of the story, but this brought FFV to life for me. Still holds up to this day, and I watch it after every playthrough of FFV that I do.
God, I remember seeing this YEARS ago from I think a video rental. I didn't even know FF5 existed. I just saw Final Fantasy, and that's what made me get it
This really brings me back! My friend snagged this from some store and let me borrow it (it was the first volume) and I remember watching it and just being confused. I just got into Final Fantasy when I saw it and played Mystic Quest and 3 (6) not knowing anything about the earlier ones and seven was just nearly around the corner. I do remember seeing this in Suncoast(again, the only place I could find Anime in my area) and I was already starting to dabble into anime, but never got it because they only had the first volume (they didn't have the second one, I always assumed it was just a short movie). I finally got around to playing FFV when I started dabbling in ROMS in highschool (early 2000s) and still never knew it was connected to the anime. A few years ago I remember reading that the anime was connected and my mind was BLOWN!
Wow. I'm so glad there is SOMEONE with a deeper appreciation for the pre- golden era titles than me (FF III (the original and the ds version) & FF V are my second and third favorites respectively). I never would've believed that one of my favorite final fantasy series had a sequel in the form of an anime. I'm guessing this is why FF IV got the After Years treatment moreso than FF V did 😮💨. I will most definitely be giving this a watch. I would've loved if Square would've took the budget they had behind that atrocious 2001 adaptation & put it into marketing & if possible... Formed this sequel into an actual video game. Clean some sides of the story up & make it official canon to FF V' timeline. One can only wish though... 🤔 Anyways, beautiful story my guy. It's amazing how influential Final Fantasy can be when appreciated under a certain limelight & your story has given me an even greater appreciation in my most coveted franchise since watching my Mom play FF I on the Nes. Much love and praise 🖤🤍💛🤝, subscribed also!
V was a pretty good game, even if the balancing was a bit funky at spots. III I could never really get into because it was SO random. Having 9 mummy fights in the first real cave which could single turn kill you if you were unlucky enough to encounter them was a major negative factor for me. I can't even imagine playing through the game on original hardware with no save states/fast forward and just praying that each fight was not guaranteed death.
I've replayed FFIII PR three times already, + the original and the DS version (and PSP again for the MogNet content). I'm not sure why I'm so drawn to this one (not as much as IV though). And I also completed V countless times, both on GBA and in the computer (PR and, with emulation back in the day).
I have this on VHS somewhere. Oddly, I don't recall realizing it was a sequel, might have been before I played emulated fan-translated FF5 some millions of years ago.
I watched this anime decades before I ever played FFV. I think I rented it from Blockbuster in either 1997 or 1998. I absolutely enjoyed it, even without getting all the references to the FFV lore. I guess that's why FFV felt so familiar when I played it a few years ago 😀
I loved this ova back in the day. There wasn't nearly as much Final Fantasy stuff coming out back then as there is today, so it was pretty cool getting my hands on series like this. Made me really happy when FFV came out on playstation so I could finally experience the story that let to this.
Funny, I actually found out about it and watched it a couple months ago. I think it had potential, but nothing will blow you away. The characters don't really evolve in any way, the story is just what you'd expect, etc. But it does look nice and pretty short so you won't loose days off your life to giving it a try haha Wish they would have make more of these sequels in anime form. It probably could have happen if this would have been more successful...
I love that you love this movie, and I love that you’re making this video. FFV became my favorite Final Fantasy game after getting it from from the Anthology release on PS1. I was about 12. A bit later my brother and I rented Legend of the Crystals from Blockbuster, not knowing what it was, and we were pumped to realize it was a FFV sequel. I also totally relate to you about anime being less common: we really had to work had to get anime back then. Surprisingly, this anime really holds up, both in story and in animation. It almost reminds me of Nausicaa in terms of art style. I lost my VHS tapes of it. Not that I own a VHS player anyway! I hope it is uploaded to a streaming service eventually!
Gonna be real with you. Final Fantasy V is my favorite game in the franchise. The characters are charming, and the story is earnest. V taught me JRPGs and their mechanics. I'm floored they continued it in some way, thank you for sharing!
I remember this OVA! I recall seeing it in a local rental store in VHS format at some point in time but that was well over 20 years ago. I remember looking at the cover and the back and just thinking how incredibly cool it was to have a Final Fantasy anime but I never got to watch it in full. Now I think I've got the inspiration to do so and unfortunately, I've never beaten FFV, only played very little of it.
I remember this animation well. For the longest time, I thought I'd imagined it, rented from my local blockbuster. Like Josh Kirby, Time Warrior, which is also apparently real.
Man thanks for sharing this video. My first FF game was 6 (or FF 3 as I knew it) but once I beat that I immediately found an English rom for FF 5 which became is my favorite game in the franchise and made me fall in love with it. Never knew about this OVA. I'm gonna have to give it a watch. Also cool sword.
I loved this short when I was a teen! I never knew it was a sequel but It was the closest to the games, beside advent children but sadly I had to watch the bad ones first besides this, so when the others came out I was disappointed. this 4 parter had amazing and unique art as well
I remember getting to rent volume 1 at the video rental store growing up, however at the time I had no knowledge of the actual Final Fantasy V. So this is a cool fact to learn and I need to find it to watch in new context because at this stage in life FF V is one of my favorite FF games.
Fiesta fans will never forget the game. But I did rent this on VHS back in the day. Couldn't tell you anything about it other than at one point the Mid ghost is a perv
Thanks for sharing. You're probably a few years older than me. Video games were how I initially got interested in Japan, which then led to my later interest in anime and watching shows on Toonami and the old Tech TV. I miss the art direction of older anime like this one and of course the fact that it is pre-digital. If you don't mind me asking, how long did you live in Japan? I was over there 6 years before coming back. Love the language and culture.
@Triface-s9s I lived there for 2 years preaching Chrstianity 7 days a week that whole time with no days off, no movies, video games, no dating etc. Haha. So I was able to learn the language really quickly with brute force. 😆
I only learned of this anime sequel recently, but I first played 5 a long time ago on an emulator. Definitly going to watch it, now that I know its just on youtube.
Suncoast... man you brought back some memories when you showed that still of that store... miss those days of going there buying anime, movies, and all such of things. SUBBED!
This movie is great! Its simple and fun and the perfect amount of depth! I bought this movie from Suncoast because it had Final Fantasy on it! I still revisit this 15 years later!
Probably even less remembered is that Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals was featured at Otakon 2000 for Mystery Anime Theater 3000. That is most likely lost media now, and as far as I ever know, it was only ever showed at Otakon 2000.
Loved this Anime. Got into "Anime" when it showed up on the 3 show special (Robot Carnival, Lensman, Vampire Hunter D) on Sci-Fi channel, when it was more....well more Sci-Fi. Later on down the road I learned I had already seen some anime in my youth( I was like...8...maybe 10ish...shh I am old.), Warriors of the Wind, which later re-released with it's original title several years later, Nausicaa & the Valley of the Wind. It was around Y2K (year 1999/2000) Xmas time that my mother had decided to get me a crap-ton of random anime from an online store sellout. Final Fantasy Legend of the Crystals was one of them. Having played every western release of Final Fantasy at that time, I enjoyed it greatly.

There was also another FF anime but it's even more obscure
I know alot people do not like this OVA but i think its so charming! Rintaro director of anime like galaxy express 999 the film, x/1999, and metropolis is the director
DAMMMN THE SUNCOAST PIC THO
I think that's where I got my first anime on DVD
Haha the brotherhood/sisterhood of the Suncoast! 😂
Final Fantasy V is GOAT
PREACH!!!
never !
Awesome story! I remember the fine art of copying tapes back in the day! Lol 😂
Really surprised to hear we ever had it in France, since I think the first Final Fantasy game we got there was 7. (And afaik the first official French translation was with the GBA games.)
How's the French dub?
@danielevans7439 Oh man you gotta go watch the rest!
@@imaginator85Will do! Btw, I noticed you know Japanese but still called him “Galoof” despite it being がラフ. Old habits die hard I guess. #Aeris #Reina
>Which resulted in the confusing renumbering
Wet streets cause rain.
Lol
I've always wanted to play After Years but never did even though I love 4. 😢
I can remember seeing previews for this on old Urban Vision anime VHS tapes. Only until recently did I actually watch it. I thought it was a decent OVA! Great video!
@ZombeeJohnny Oh man...those Urban Vision preview reels were iconic!
@@imaginator85 I sunk my teeth into those! Wicked City and Vampire Hunter D are classics released by them!
heh i remember too, we old. love japanimation
@@martymcintosh5026 Not old just vintage 😆
So true about the concept designs. 5's massive discrepancies are off the charts! Lol
Final Fantasy concept art is so useless, I heard that when making Final Fantasy 6, they designed the sprites first, then told the artist to make concepts of the already existent sprites. And even then, they couldn't get some of the characters right.
This was not forgotten. I have it, English subbed and all.
That spirits within cash grab call out was gold!
FF1-3 then 9 & 10, then 1-6 on GBA, screw spirits within.

@genesisrhapsodos3151 Oh man that's excellent to hear! Glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's really fun!
Played through 5 during quarantine, one of the first JRPGs since I was a kid that I actually finished without taking a break or stopping entirely.
@@ix8750 That's EPIC!
It was also one of my first animes! 🤩 I had never even played a FF game before seeing it (FF 7 was the first game to get a release here in Australia) but I adored this weird cartoon and watched it over and over again, without even understanding its link to the games.
@@irvyne6111 That's amazing! Crazy that 7 was the first one there!
Just happened upon your channel while looking to get back into FF classics, and I wanted to say that your content is very entertaining 👍. Subs will definitely come.

@fleiteh Oh heck yeah! Welcome my friend! Great to have you!
Was a great OVA. And enjoyed hearing Tenchi’s VA as the main character. It’s a lot better than Final Fantasy Unlimited
I remember watching this in my friend's house when I was in middle school. I hadn't yet played FFV, so I thought it was just this weird, unconnected thing. The fan service REALLY threw us.
@PowerPandaMods Haha yeah all the fan service was a strange thing for me to encounter at that age too. 🤣
I remember I got this on VHS at Fye after beating ff7. Was not a happy camper lol. Had no idea this was connected to anything let alone 5! 😮
@@individualywrappedcheeseslices 😄 🤣
I remember stumbling on this a long time ago.
My stepbrother owns this on VHS. I borrowed it from him several times. It’s a good OVA.
I still have this on VHS from when my local rental place sold off their VHS. Somehow this made it to the US and not the game.
I still have both VHS tapes, watching this made me realize that there's more people out there that even knew about this.
@@matthewovercash8432 Right? That's been my favorite part of making this video!
@MooglePower Holy crap that's so epic dude! Nice name BTW! 😄 KUPO
@@imaginator85 Haha, thank you! Not enough moogles in Legend of the Crystals, though. :P
Not forgotten. Watched this back in the day. Loved renting it from Blockbuster
Never forgotten. I always loved Legend of the crystals. Still got a copy in my closet.
You're a LEGEND!
@blahlbinoa Haha that's a great story! Thanks for sharing!
I still have my VHS copy I picked up at Suncoast Video. Can 100% relate to this. Thanks for sharing.
@@jimkincaidz Love that!

Totally!
Anyways, beautiful story my guy. It's amazing how influential Final Fantasy can be when appreciated under a certain limelight & your story has given me an even greater appreciation in my most coveted franchise since watching my Mom play FF I on the Nes. Much love and praise 🖤🤍💛🤝, subscribed also!
This comment is everything! You took all the words straight out of my head! Thanks for the support. 9 is my all time favorite but I LOVE 4 and 6.
Exactly! It was a different time then.
Lovely video. I was not aware of another anime based off FF apart from UNLIMITED!
Funny, I actually found out about it and watched it a couple months ago.
I think it had potential, but nothing will blow you away. The characters don't really evolve in any way, the story is just what you'd expect, etc. But it does look nice and pretty short so you won't loose days off your life to giving it a try haha
Wish they would have make more of these sequels in anime form. It probably could have happen if this would have been more successful...
@lightbright4996 I know right? Maybe one day...
Loved hearing your story!
Thanks for sharing this. Always good to learn more about final fantasy
Gonna be real with you. Final Fantasy V is my favorite game in the franchise. The characters are charming, and the story is earnest. V taught me JRPGs and their mechanics.
I'm floored they continued it in some way, thank you for sharing!
@bengalofdaeast1050 Absolutley my friend! You gotta give it a watch! FF4 is the game I cut my RPG teeth on.
I remember this anime when it first came out. I ordered it in at my local comic shop/bookstore
@BleedForTheWorld I have never beat FFV either! I really wanna go back and give it a try again though. Wish they would remake it!
Thank you much, friend!
