  • Today's video is an update on my 2018 hatchlings. These are baby leopard tortoises and they have been hatching over the past few months. As you may have seen in my tortoise tour video, I had 97 eggs in total from my 2 females (BB & Tallulah), so they've been very busy Mums this year! Out of all of these eggs, 52 hatched so far (with 9 more that are due to hatch in the next couple of weeks).
    In this video I will be showing you snippets on how I care for lots of baby tortoises.
    I have lots of other videos on baby tortoise care

      Hello & thanks for your support in Uganda! 😊 Wow - that would be amazing to see leopard tortoises in the wild (one of my dreams!) - Do you get to seem them very often or are they fairly well hidden?
      Glad you found my videos interesting 💚🐢

      happytortoises I only really see them when they are crossing the roads in the game parks. They live alongside the Bell’s Hinged Tortoise quite frequently and love a good rabbit, or aardvark hole to sleep in at night.
      There are also lots of captive bred ones kept as pets in Kampala.

    Hi, there. I have a question about heating and lighting. Does it require for a baby tortoise to have basking light and another UV light for the indoor enclosure? or is it enough for just the basking light on it?

    • @happytortoises
      @happytortoises  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! There are lots of different options/combinations.. They require UVB and temperature gradients so they can thermoregulate... examples of how you can provide this are a) having a UVB strip light and a separate heat source like basking bulb down one end (to create the warmer end where basking bulb is and cooler area at the opposite end to basking bulb) or b) having a basking bulb with UVB (this will provide the necessary UVB and heat in one area... and the opposite end will be cooler with no UVB) c) use multiple UVB basking bulbs if you have a large tortoise table/enclosure and/or you have more than one tortoise … (lots more combinations options are available too, but hopefully you get the idea!)😉💚🐢

    2:13 the one in the left is patternless or what ??

    • @happytortoises
      @happytortoises  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      😊 The one you spotted does have a pattern but is very faint (I think the lighting in my video doesn't show it up very well at all!)… 4:28 is the photo of the top view of each of the babies in this tub so you may be able to pause it (if you're quick enough!😂) to see the two hatchlings that have very faint markings!

    My enclosure has lots of tiny little flies! How can I get rid of them?

    • @happytortoises
      @happytortoises  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, it could be the substrate is too damp (or they were already in the substrate you were using) - I suggest changing the substrate & making sure it doesn't get too damp. Do you have plants in your enclosure? If so, these could also be attracting the little flies. Hope this helps? 💚🐢

    • @blanchybaby
      @blanchybaby 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      happytortoises Thankyou. I thought you were supposed to keep the soil nearly damp for humidity? Yes I have succulents and aloe vera in Leaf’s enclosure. I use a soil marketed at tortoise substrate, are you saying the bugs could be from that?! What would you recommend I use instead?
