A Viking in the Norse sense, means someone who seeks out bays on foreign shores... The raiding was called to go in Viking... as was the trading. To go in Viking meaning setting upon bays of foreign lands. The ones who had traveled to these areas before, was usually consulted, and depending on their experience, the expedition leader would either seek trade, demand ransom, or just raid and pillage, all depending on his expedition's size, and how the locals responded.
I am predominantly Irish, but also one sixteenth British, one sixteenth French and with strong Scandinavian traits. I have read and own a small library of Irish and Viking history books. Reading and deep research is the only way we can truly learn history. It's homework.
Interesting, I remember watching the Chariots of Fire and in watching the people as they saw the Scottish runner going through his turns I kept wondering to myself how many of them looked like my Norwegian grandfather. Also looking at pictures of my Dad as a young man he was the spitting image of JFK. While in Ireland I found the Viking folk had mingled with the Vinkings.
Thanks for this informative video , My Mother was an O'Brien . Her family came over to Canada during the famine. Very interested in the history of Ireland .
The parts of Greenland settled by scandinavians is indeed green. Granted it is very rocky and covered in only low bushes and other hardy plants, but it is green. The ice cap is not immediately vissible when you are there in person.
There was a mini ice age around 500ad in scandinavia, it caused massive starvation and famine and death, desperation probably set off the first viking raiders even though we traveled and traided far and wide in early bronze age already
Karolus Magnus,a german leader of the german Franks, later converted to cristendom and called Francia, but please do not be confuse with modern france, they are not the same and neither is the territory they illegally occupied today( Occitania,Catalonia,Basque Country,Corse) etc.
Thank you for excellent and entertaining description of a complex period. I appreciate your comments "the debate continues" and alternative interpretations. So much mythology is perpetuated as historic fact when things are best kept as working theories or paradigms until better ones are made. THAT BEING SAID I'm currently reading Rutherford's Princes of Ireland. Although it is fiction it gives an interesting human perspective on the many events that swept through Dyflin. I never considered the idea that pre-Viking monastic centers were initially in remote coastal areas to avoid depredations by native Irish. I had assumed that was part of the white martyrdom ascetism, Cambrai Homily, etc.
Interestingly my family heritage is 100% Norwegian yet when I did the genomic test my haplogrouo is Ireland/western Scotland. The family farm is still present in a fjord east of Alesand. The name is interesting, starting with Fin ending in nes. I speculate that Fin originates as Irish.
Ragnar Lothbrok was the father of Ivar The Boneless, and Ivar was the brother of Olaf The White. But was Ragnar also the father of Olaf? Olaf is mention as son of the king of Lochlann (Rogaland), a county southwest in Norway). Aslaug Sigurdsdottir was the wife of Ragnar Lothbrook
I never thought about vikings arriving in ireland and definetly not that they had such success, I knew they became friendly with scottish(?) And took england
There’s a really cool book called “Lion of Ireland” about King Brian Boru… it’s a fiction historical based book but it really goes into the interactions with the Norse and Irish people at the time and demonstrates how by the 9th century Vikings were an inevitable part of Irish culture and history. Vikings made their own kingdom (Dublin) which fully competed politically with the traditional Irish nobility of the time. Eventually the same thing happened to the Norse that happens to all of Erin’s invaders… they get pulled into her family and become just as “Irish” as anyone else born there😉
In my family oral history the fionn Lochlannach arrived silently in the mists in search of plunder, slew every living thing, and their land ran red with blood.
France did not exist as a nation at this time. He ( Charlemagne) was king of the Franks, not the same thing. At the time that the vikings reached Greenland, the climate was far more temperate. Some of the "facts" being offered in this presentation are just regurgitations of old ideas.
Ah but... Irish blame British for absolutely EVERYTHING. interesting history. If indegious Indians Canada n American have been found to not be Orginal inhabitants where does that leave scandanavian or Irish origins. Research also shows island of Ireland was coastal erosion of coast of Scotland, England, Wales which could be why mixed heritage was part of Irelands fabric.
My blond hair and blue eyes came from my great-grandfather, who left Ireland to immigrate to the United States... probably some Viking Blood in our family
Lots of native Gaels have and had blond hair. I do and I come from very old clans that have been intermarrying for two millenia who are either mostly red haired or Black Irish from Cork, Kerry and Tipperary. I'm actually red blonde, sometimes called strawberry blonde, with gray-green eyes. I very much doubt any remote Viking ancestry has much to do with this as physical descriptions of my people from long ago describe them in a similar fashion. My people have a closer connection with Galicia in northwestern Spain than Norway. For odd reasons I was raised in a Norwegian Lutheran church so I've known a lot of Norwegians. I definitely didn't blend in physically with my friends my age there. I do however blend into the background when I visit my relatives in Ireland. This is an interesting sensation as my area is heavily Asian American and Mexican American so usually stand out. I place this stereotype in the same garbage bin as the old English shibboleth that my father, my brother and other Black Irish are so dark because of descent from "survivors of the Spanish Armada". Utterely ridiculous garbage for a hundred reasons.
Theres very little scandinavian dna left in the english, and they had more settlements longer in england so probably wasnt alot of mixing between irish and vikings either. But sure theres a chance.
@@neuroleptika Yes there absolutely was MUCH mixing of a Irish and Vikings… so much that eventually they were considered their own RACE at the time. In fact Irish RED HAIR is from VIKING DNA. Most Irish were dark hair or blonde.
@@neuroleptika I disagree with that account. There is still a decent amount of Norse DNA in middle part of the UK. All of Northern England was entirely a Viking Kingdom for hundreds of years with their capital in modern day York. They become so intermixed with Danish Vikings that most of the place names in Northern England are from Danish language. I know this because my ancestors are from Norman people who settled in Northern England😎
Someone should correct that 495 date. Unless there is some new evidence we haven't heard before.
Thank you very much for this video! I have been looking for a resource exactly like this.
Excellent lecture.
Am half hour in to the talk, very interesting so far! Thank you!
very interesting and comprehensive talk

It’s like calling people who take hikes say “let’s go hiking”. Or bike riders “I’m going Biking!!” 🗡 🚲
Excellent, well done. Clap, clap.
Excellent! Thanks for the great work Sean!
Enjoyable video, I notice everyone else knows more, given their replies, your lecture is as good as anyone elses.

Not sure British, French, and Scandinavian are "real" heritage links?

What evidence for mingling with the Vikings did you find?
I recently realized the Irish name McAuliffe = Son of Olaf. O’Rourke = Rorik . McGyver 😎 Son of Ivar
So much Irish culture is fused with Norse
Rourke comes from "Ruarc" an Irish name. They were an Uí Briúin Bréifne lineage.

A lot of O’Brien in county Mayo

795, not 495!
When I seen 495 I had to click to see why it said that ha. It is a misprint I presume?
hi sean, whats your sources for the story of the capture of Thorgius?
Hi! I can't find any contact information for Sean beyond his email (seanmurphy630@gmail.com). Your best bet is to email him directly.

Very interesting video why does waterford claim to be Irelands oldest town as Dublin has a much longer history
Think they claim it’s the oldest Viking town but yes Dublin was older, however it did have pre Viking history but was not built up until they came
495 likes on this one at the moment. Perfect 🙂

Your genetics could be mixed up with the slaves taken back to Scandinavia
Could be either Irish Slave or Royalty.
Alesand? Do you mean Ålesund maybe?
@@charliesieben5695 yes that's right Alesund
Why would you have to Speculate on the internet what Fin means? Look it up 😄. I’m pretty sure in Celtic it meant “Blonde Haired”
