- Mario Hoops 3-on-3, also known as Mario Slam Basketball in Europe and Mario Basketball 3-on-3 in Japan, is a Mario sports game developed by Square Enix for the Nintendo DS. It features Mario and his friends participating in basketball. This is the second time Mario has starred in a basketball game with the first being the GameCube version of NBA Street V3 along with Luigi and Peach.
In the beginning, it was meant to be an original intellectual property, but Square Enix felt that it would work well if it were a part of the Mario franchise, and so Square Enix contacted Nintendo, who then allowed it to use the Mario label. This game is the first in which Mario and Final Fantasy characters appear together as playable characters.
A follow-up called Mario Sports Mix, which includes not only basketball, but volleyball, hockey, and dodge ball as well, was released for the Wii in 2010 (2011 outside of Japan).
The main mode is Tourney mode, where a team of 3 is chosen and they compete against other teams for the cup, in generally 3 matches. Exhibition mode is like quick-play, as well as customizable.
Almost all of the gameplay in the game is controlled by the Touch Screen. The only exceptions are moving a character, which is controlled by the +Control Pad, and a special form of passing, which uses the L Button button. This can be switched around with the buttons controlling movement and the R Button button for passing for left-handed players.
There are many moves for offense and defense. The player's team of three is identified with a red circle below them, a blue circle for the opponent team's players. The player's team's basket is always facing ahead of them, and the opponent's team in the back, even when switching court. Therefore, generally, stroking up on the touch screen is used for offense and stroking down is used for defense. For more on moves, see the Practice section.
The match starts at half court, with the center of each team preparing to jump for the ball that Lakitu will release at the start. Matches are played in at least two periods lasting two and a half minutes. At the end of each period, each team's coin count is reset to 0 and another jump-ball at half court is initiated. Whichever team has the most points overall when all periods are played, wins the match.
Scoring is a bit different in Mario Hoops than in a real world basketball game. Each shot made is worth 20 points. Shots made outside of what is normally the 3-point line are worth 30 points (therefore, the basic shot is multiplied by 10 in Mario Hoops). Special shots, regardless of position are worth 40 points. To compound the points, coins also come into play. Players can collect coins by dribbling over the ? Panels scattered about the court. Regular coins add 1 point each to the score, and red coins add 10 points to the score. Every time a team makes a basket, their coins are reset to zero. Getting hit, either from items or other players, will result in some of the player's coins scattering on the field, which can be picked up by anyone, including the character who lost them. The limit to the number of coins one team can have is 100 (therefore the maximum normal score for one shot is 140, and for Jr. Street, the maximum score is 420), and the more coins one has, the more are lost on a hit. If the player make a shot with a lot a coins, the player can really go from losing to winning in a matter of seconds. If the ? Panels aren't on the field, then the shot value is divided by ten, making normal shots worth two points, three-pointers worth three, and special shots worth four.

That final battle in the rainbow ship was so damn hard to beat back in my childhood. I lost my copy of this game. But I feel like I could be able to beat it using some strategies
Can’t believe 8 year old me actually beat rainbow cup in hard mode
This was the very first DS game I ever played along with Pokémon Pearl I always got stressed out when playing the Star and special cup. When I found out that in order to unlock the three final fantasy characters you have to face at the end of special cup by getting gold in special cup I thought I was going to lose my mind, eventually I was able them along with most of the characters expect Cactaur which I just used action replay for that. Good times.
This game was dope as fuck. I played the hell out of it as a kid.

I litteraly came here very few minutes after completing this cup and getting the gold trophy in hard mode. To do it, I used Yoshi, Ninja and Peach, and trust me when I say that having to win while overpassing every opponent by at least 200 points is really hard. I'm satisfied now.
It’s difficult but it can be very easy if your a basketball fan by using an old school method called “triangle offense.” You’re by passing the ball and moving around to cause two CPUs to double team one player it will lead to an open shot. I would just go for dunks or layups and just stop them on defense. To beat the final game I won 40-31.
So yesterday my friend from school got his old 3ds out bc he was bored and started playing this game for no reason but we both started laughing so hard bc for some reason it’s so funny to see nintendo characters just do these ridiculous slam dunks doin like flips in the air and stuff. So I just wanted 2 mention that... this game brought so much joy and laughter that day.

Damn. As a kid, I was never able to beat this cup on hard mode. And to be frank, I still don't think I could :/. Who knows, I haven't played this for like 8-10 years.
i lost my ds back in 2016 and this year i finally got a new one. I was happy this game was in it because it was my favorite, and yeAH i can totally affirm that cup is the hardest. I can beat all levels,,, except that one
I got some tips, 1st of all get characters that while doing a special move, they do it very fast and getting the ball everywhere, i recommend waluigi,bowser and ninja, then get as many coins as u can then do ninja's special move, *MAKE SURE U DO THE SPECIAL MOVES INSIDE THE 2-POINT ZONE* then just like mario thoung did on the video, if they are jump stealing, just pass and shot, also collect coins aswell, for coin dunk i recommend bowser since his coin dunk is a tricky one, he takes the ball to the back instead to the front. Another tip is to get around 35+ coins if ur gonna make a shot or dunk
*also* when they pass, click *L* to change to the player the ball is getting pass to, so that way u get the ball instead

My L button (i think) died and i had to play like this. Actually, i was better without it.
Since i couldn't switch between my characters, i had to git gud.
It's pretty easy if you keep doing charge shots. Never go for the dunks.

You gotta do the triangle offense. It’s a simple of moving around and drawing a CPU away from one of your teammates to you. By doing so there are now two CPUs near you and a wide open teammate. Just go for dunks or layups on offense and play defense. I beat the final fantasy team 40-31. Very low scoring

man, that last match in the rainbow cup on hard is literally IMPOSSIBLE to get gold on
If you have a speedy team than it’s possible. The trick is to have speed and no powerful players. My team would be Ninja, Yoshi, and Cactus. They run fast and can stay on defense. Just play triangle offense to get easy low dunks and layups then be fierce on defense and you’ll be good.

I think you need a ridiculous amount of points in Jr. Street to unlock the Desert Court. After that, just play on the Desert Court and dribble on Cactaur's head until he pops out of the ground. Win the game, and he's unlocked.
