- I've been on a Nintendo DS kick recently and what better way to continue this by playing a Mario sports title, Mario Hoops 3 on 3. This was one of the only times that Mario has played this sport, basketball, in a video game but it sure stands out for many reasons. Today, let's take a look what Mario Hoops 3 on 3 has to offer and maybe just find out if they should make another entry into Mario's time playing some basketball.

I LOVED this game. As a kid I couldn’t for the life of me beat the last cup on hard, and so going back to it years later, it felt so so good to actually beat and unlock everything else! This game was just such a hidden gem in the sports franchise and I’d love to see it again
I used to play the minigame with my cousin on that game from what I remember, but if it was only a dream then it was a good one..
When I heard the character select song, I thought the lyrics were "We are free!"
But they're actually "Three on Three!"
This game and New Super Mario Bros were the first DS games I played growing up. This was also my introduction to Final Fantasy.

I played the hell out of this game when I was a kid and I remember having such a hard time unlocking the Ninja, the White Mage and the Black Mage. That final level on the Rainbow ship used to be sooooo hard, but that's one of the things that gave me the most satisfaction after finally unlocking them. I also remember I was crazy to play as Dixie Kong because that was the first Mario sporty spin-off to ever feature her. My go-to team used to be Daisy, Birdo and Dixie and I miss those simpler times lol
I have actually wanted another one of these. Or another Mario Sports Mix, which was a similar concept.
Probably due to having the same developer.
Looking back at it as a grown-up man, Mario Sports Mix is kinda lackluster in comparison to Hoops but oh God, I played that game so damn much. I'd love to have either of them available for me to play again

This was my designated "sick day" game as I recall. Every time I was ill, I'd take my DS up my nan's and play this.
One of my absolute favorite DS games. A bit of a hidden gem of the marios IMO. Super innovative and fun! Love the special dunks, playing against the hardest COMs definitely makes the game challenging!
I loved this game so much, this and Diddy Kong racing were probably my most played on the original DS
I LOVE the black mage design in the game so much
I was obsessed with this game in middle school, it felt so good to dunk.
Never realized Sports Mix was the successor to Hoops, neat.

There's just truly something unique about mario ds games, seriously. Mario and Luigi series, Mario party ds, hoops 3 on 3? These games are still some of my favorite and Mario party ds is absolutely underrated.

My favorite way to play this game in on Wii U. It’s actually kinda neat to see this game out on the big screen, and it plays seamlessly without looking at the touch screen even though you use it the entire game.
Well probably never see it but I would love a NBA 2K Nintendo game. NBA Street Vol 3 had the iconic 3 become players. So a system like that but with the entire Nintendo cast would be incredible.

Hoops 3 on 3 and Mario sluggers were such fun underated games for Mario.
Wish we could get more like them or rpg like games like Wii sluggers to adventure around gaining allies
Mario and Final Fantasy crossing over to play basketball? This seems like the kind of weird game that I'd want in my collection. I absolutely must get it along with Pokemon Typing Adventure and Fortune Street.

The difficulty in this game spikes so much. Also this was probably my introduction to Final Fantasy characters despite for years not knowing they were Final Fantasy characters.
While I never played this game, I’ve heard many good things about it! I did play Mario Sports Mix on Wii tho, and that was a banger, so I imagine this would be to a similar standard
This unlocked good memories of my childhood, I dont know why this game is so little known today! the Underwater court was my fav, the colors were so pretty and chill to play

I remember owning and playing this game when I was younger but only about a while ago that I relized that it wasn't just some weird fever dream of mines.
The game came out with awful timing for me. Worldwide releases weren't commonplace back then and it was supposed to be my Christmas present, but it missed the date in Europe and was delayed to february 2007. Sadly, a PTA meeting held before then turned out to be so disastrous, my mother would put all of my game hardware in a box until the school year ended. It turned out only to do more harm than good thanks to what I found out only recently to be ADHD, as I only had my consoles in my mind back then and couldn't care less about studying. Also, until the incident I used to 100% all of my games, but "thanks" to this unwanted gaming-less 6-month period I now have an ever-expanding backlog (gaming releases went on, I didn't).
I haven't even finished the video but I have a lot to say about this game. I lost this game cartridge YEARS ago probably sometime in 2007 after having it for maybe a few months. I remember LOOOOOVING this game and playing it a lot before I had lost it. I even remember the little jingle where they'd sing "three on threeeeeee". Never found the cartridge (last remember having it at a neighbor's house) and for some really weird reason, despite even working at a resell game shop for years at one point where I could have easily secured a copy, I never bought or played it again. I also have not looked up gameplay footage or any videos on it until now, so it has only really existed in my memories for all these years. Glad to see someone has fond memories of it as well! Maybe I will make it a goal this year to finally get & play a copy.

The Square characters were so dope
Bro, that game right there is one of my favorite sports games of all time. I put it next to my Mt. Rushmore of sports video games next to NFL street 2, nba street 2 and super Mario strikers. My hometown team the Dallas mavericks made it to the finals the year this game came out so I’ve also had a soft spot for this game too

Aye, I had so much fun playing that game on the DS I even remember beating the game when I was 17 and celebrating it like I won the NBA finals as the rainbow tourney had a stupidly steep difficulty curve for me at least and I had to use my full strength to beat it.
I absolutely love this game and played it so much as a kid! Once I unlocked them my main team of 3 was Boo,Parakoopa,and Moogle. Plus some of the music is so good.
I remember a Penny Arcade comic for this where Gabe throws his DS and screams "NINJAS SHOULD NOT PLAY BASKETBALL!!!" Then Tycho comes in and says "So you smashed your DS?" And the Gabe says "That was your DS. I smashed mine this morning."
I have no idea why I still remember that.
Interesting fact: The composer for these games would go on to compose the music for FFXIV and FFXVI.

Hell yeah new video! I’ve been seeing more people talk about this game lately that’s awesome. I still have my complete copy I’ve had since a kid this game was great man. square needs to be allowed to make a new mario basketball game for the switch that would be great! Plus the soundtrack for this game went hard for no reason
My cousin had this and we'd play on my DS all the time. Still the most fun sports game to me along with strikers. Charged specifically, newest one is... Not quite my tempo

Honestly Hoops 3 on 3’s roster was really good. But it’s semi-sequel Mario sports mix’s roster sucked! Literally it has no unlockable Mario characters!

I used to play this game a lot. I got all the characters, stages and all gold trophys. Them I later lost the game cartridge. I wish this had online like Mario Kart DS.

I really feel like the Mario sports games would be better as a anthology game like the Olympic Sonic and Mario games. I feel like the only Mario sports games that can stand by themselves are tennis and baseball, maybe the soccer strikers game too, but I never played that one.

This is legit one the best Mario sports games, second only to Mario Strikers Charged.
I always used the d-pad and face buttons for the game, only using the touch screen for specials.

The game was named Mario slam basketball in the EU.
This game only managed to come out how it is, because of how desperate Nintendo was to get games for the DS, and since the gimmicks on the DS were touch it all played out somehow, but the reason why we will never see something like this again, is because Nintendo has tightened more on their IPs, but who knows since we are getting a remake for Super Mario RPG, its possible that they have mended their relationship with Square, and we may see a sequel or remake for at least Mario Spots Mix.
