Do you use the Jargar Superior strings on your cello? What are your thoughts on them?
special note: background music in the intro and outro is an original composition for a Theater Score I did in October, 2021. I recorded all of the parts using the Pirastro Perpetual Soloist AD and Cadenza GC setup from Episodes 01 and 02 of this series.

Such a helpful episode! I also really enjoyed the Perpetual Soloist Strong A and have been curious to try out other strings that have similar sound/feel so glad I stumbled onto your series. No one else goes into this much detail so I appreciate the content. Would really love to see a continuation of this series, especially a comparison with the Versum Solo strings which are my all time favorite strings so far!

Revisiting this video- super helpful, especially since you include the tension equivalency across string brands!

Thanks! Glad it helped! I've filmed a bunch of other string review vids, but dang it's been hard to find time to edit them all! hopefully I'll get some more published soon 🤞

I think the sticky feeling is common on new strings because they tend to put a powder finish on them. I usually wipe my new strings with a microfiber cloth until the cloth comes clean. It happened to me yesterday with a new string. I noticed it then I thought : oh I forgot to wipe the powder off. It stopped as soon as the powder was off.

Thanks for the video,..... very informative !
I'm on Jargar Classics and looking to explore different tension from the Jargar range on a 7/8 size Intermediate instrument ?

You cannot compare tensions across different brands because they depend on the free vibrating length that is 690 mm for Pirastro and 700mm for Larsen. So you have to increase the Pirastro tensions by 3%.

Feel free to do all of that math for each string maker and each individual string and then post it here so we can all see the corrected tensions! 😀
I still think comparing between brands and mentioning the brand’s labeled tension is helpful and gives you a very good idea of the the intended tension performance from string to string. Plus there’s no way I’d be able to remember off of the top of my head who measures their tension to 69cm and who measures to 70cm.
But in the future I can try to write that down and mention it in addition to the tension.

@@bgcellozone As far as I know, only Pirastro uses 69cm. What's your opinion about CG Passione? I'm contemplating buying them (I use Obligato at the moment), but I'm afraid they don't sound like "proper" gut strings (Oliv, Eudoxa) and are not as stable as metal strings (the worst of both worlds).

@@semiot8305 If I remember correctly, the intro music for my video was recorded with Passione heavy gauge CG!
Short answer is they Do Not sound like a traditional gut string. They sound like a very powerful (at least heavy gauge) modern gut string. Maybe the closest that a gut string would sound to a steel string. Still some warmth and depth that you want from gut, but they are much more stiff and have a completely different more modern low end sound. I recorded some videos on those and just haven't gotten around to editing them yet. But when I do, I'll ping back to you so you can hear them.
From what I remember, they were more pitch stable than Eudoxa and Oliv, less subject to temperature/humidity changes - but I need to go back to my notes and the footage to confirm that.
I thought they sounded awesome though, and were really rumbly with power for a low gut string. The biggest issue I had on my setup was that their response (especially the heavy gauge) was really sluggish - I had trouble playing fast notes, especially on the C string, it just didn't want to move. So I eventually switched away from them. But for a little while I used the heavy Passione GC with the Oliv AD for a "powerhouse modern gut setup" and it rocked.
Didn't try the medium gauge, maybe the response would be quicker with a slimmer version of the string (one would hope)
