Thanks for reminding me "I aint got no IPhone" exists. I totally wanted to hear that again, and definitely didn't cringe myself inside out every time you played it.
When I was a kid, my school was super supportive of the DS. During first 5-ish mins of school, and the last 15-20 mins, we were allowed to play DS games together while we waited for the busses. At the beginning of class we didn't have enough time to do anything other than maybe swap games. In the afternoon while waiting for the busses we'd duke it out in all the PvP Mario games like Mario Kart, Party, and the 1v1 mode on NSMB. This wasn't even limited to our class either, we could use pictochat to talk to surrounding classes to organize a time to swap games in the morning, or set up a match for PvP for the afternoon. Of course almost everyone had a DS. The 3DS was maybe a year or two old, which meant it was possible to get the DS Lite and DSi fairly cheap, making it accessable to most of the students. At one point I even gave a half broken DS lite (the hinge wouldn't keep the screen in place) to a student who really wanted one. Sharing Flipnotes was a HUGE thing too. If you made good Flipnotes, you were immediately cool. Flipnote meme sharing was always the best part of my day. I wish this generation of elementary school kids could experience this. I can give my kid a 3ds with a flashcart full of games I loved as a kid, and even more that I wish I had, but I can't give her the same experiences I had.
I was never talented at making flipnotes, still; I was so sad when my DSi's touchscreen broke, because I wasn't able to draw messages in the Hatena-chatrooms anymore and lost like atleast 3 good friends. 9 year old me was fucking sad, so sad even, that 2-3 years later when I got my first smartphone, I searched for a Hatena-app on the PlayStore and actually found one. I managed to message my old friends on there, but I am pretty sure that they never received them, because they probably weren't even using it anymore & I'm not even sure if the app was legit. It's been around 10 years and I'm still sad about this. Fuck my life.
Ooooooo, Flipnote was awesome. My brother and I used to make Matt portraits, swords fights, and sometimes fake games when we got bored. It pretty much helped me understand how animation works.
Oh man The nostalgia is real! I remember I used to take this stick fight animations and add effects and color into them! I think Flipnote is definitely the reason why I buy the biggest SD card for every device I have. I think the one in my DSI that I used was 500MBs and that was a huge deal back in 2010 or 2011. I honestly don't know how I got my hands on that back then but it felt real nice being able to download anything I wanted from Flipnote.
I was very active during Flipnote Hatena. I witnessed the birth of sudomemo and was an active user for about 6-7 years, while sudomemo is still alive and I visit it every once in a while, it's sad seeing how the community drastically shrunk as the years went on. Flipnote Studio will always hold a special place for me
the DSi was such a creative golden age! the combo of Flipnote and WarioWare DIY on a device you can fit in your pocket... I imagine so many devs, musicians and animators started there and that is so damn cool to think about. this video was killer, keep up the awesome work f4mi!! #BringBackFlipnote 🐸
i got a DSi from my cousin back in 2012 and got addicted to FlipNote immediately. unfortunately, before i properly got into it, despite only creating copies of flipnotes made by other users, flipnote hatena was discontinued. i still remember two titles from that console: Jar of Dirt, and Banana Phone! i replayed those like crazy and had so much fun! haha
Hatena was my introduction to internet culture and I’m so glad it was through the well moderated platform. Platforms like the dsi’s sudomemo and 3D’s Kaeru Gallery make me happy because it shows me that the community is still thriving. I still draw in Flipnote 3D to this day and it always makes me happy when others tell me my art made them feel nostalgic. Very good video yo!
I always knew about Flipnote, but I upgraded straight from a DS Lite to a 3DS wayyy back in the fall of 2011, so I never got to experience it. The passion of fellow Nintendo game fans never ceases to amaze me, even if this isn't the first service that they've revived. It's more than Nintendo has revived. 😉
Yooooo I freaking loved Flipnote Hatena back in the day! It honestly feels like the kickstart of my personality and I'm so much grateful for it. Amazing video btw but I wish you talked a little bit more about the community, the different channels with their own niche (Flipnote Italia ftw) and the interaction between users that even though was limited af allowed people to communicate to the point of having drama between users. Also the stars the freaking stars! I believe the designer of China's social credit score himself must have designed the star system on that thing, remember the praise people with purple stars had? The first flipnote I ever watched to was called "Disegna Mario cantando" in the Italian version ("The Mario drawing song" was the English title). It was a celebrative flipnote made by Nintendo and I still remember that catchy song...
flipnote hatena it's sure one of the best things that happened to me, thanks to it I started discovering music for my own, I learned so many things about animation and drawing (I still love to draw and it's part of my college's career) I really hope Nintendo gives us a chance and release it for the switch.
being realistic due to the touchscreen of the switch it's so different from a DSi they need to release a special stylus or a tablet for it, I don't really care if it is so expensive, the nostalgia and hype will sure make me buy anything to animate on Flipnote again. thanks for the cool video:)
Flipnote wasn’t just an easy to use animation software, but it was almost like TH-cam before TH-cam. I recommend watching a video by CS Ghost Animation about Flipnote and the friends he made and eventually lost when Nintendo discontinued Flipnote.

For the longest time I thought the front facing frog sprite had a giant smile but now I know it's a stomach. I knew it was a belly on the side sprite but not on the front sprite somehow.

You're not giving Flipnote 3D enough credit, I still use it today. It is vastly superior to the original, yhe interface's design actually inspires me. (Make sure to turn on advanced settings or whatever it's called, I also get rid of the frog in the corner and sound.)
I remember back in 2019 remembering flipnote from my DSi (which I no longer had) and after doing some research, discovering flipnote 3D. Because I didn't know how to hack my 3DS and didn't want to buy Nintendo points, I managed to discover that by playing Mario Run, you could earn enough points to get Flipnote 3D. Surprisingly, it worked! Good times...
I have a Lime Japanese DSi, I really have so much fun on it, mostly I raged so hard because I failed to finish the final bowser boss on the SM64 DS. Also I fell in love with the aesthetic of animal crossing wild world. Ito 2011 that time I got my own DSi. It was the best thing than my PSP not gonna lie. Messing with flipnote, trying to record music with it was my own thing, letting my friend make weird crap on flipnote and yeah. It was such a fun memory till it’s now partially working

This video is fantastic. It might just be nostalgia but Nintendo just felt so special in the 00s, I think it might have been the peak of their creativity, with games from the GameCube, GBA, Wii and DS still holding up super well today.

Hell, I live in the UK and think all of GameStops practices are quite scummy. The UK version, GAME, has a similar problem. They stopped selling older games long ago, and don’t stock games from the seventh generation and lower. I do have a local CeX, that stores all kinds of old games, but man, GAME was nostalgic for me. Also, I searched up “sick music with awesome lyrics” and didn’t get anything of note. Yay.
You can make your own sprites in game builder garage which looks a lot like flipnote. I wonder if you can animate with it (probably not but if you can that would be dapper)
