I have an interesting story about this. considering i live on a small island in the Bahamas, I didnt have many friends and i was the only one who had a DSi at the time. as a kid who doodled in the back of his books constantly, i still remember the day i downloaded flipnote studio using wifi at the local library. i would go there every single day and watch and create flipnotes. some of my favorite artists there were Squirt and a lesser known K66Gunso or something like that. and i was devastated when they took it down not too long later cause i was just getting my own name out there and starting my own little community. it was the only real form of social interaction i had with kids my age who liked the same things. i wonder if you can make one of these for Colors!3d as well, a lot of the people i knew from flipnote ended up migrating there after the release of the 3ds great video btw!! sorry for this long ass comment 😅
I am SO friggin glad I finally found a video of someone who experienced the same thing I did. This was literally the only thing that kept me alive during my edgy times in middle school XD

Also you using a pencil as a stylist really bothered me. Great video Greg as always. I love seeing your new uploads
It amazes me how that for a service that died a decade ago, looking at the content today emphasizes how dated internet culture had become. While 90% of it is mostly ripped audio from the likes of Family Guy and SpongeBob, or a plethora of popular music (the greedy music companies will never hear the end of it), there was no denying that at least you get to see a creative take on the source material. For me, finding out about Hatena's closure came unexpected. As prior to me finding out, I found myself not logging into the service for quite some time. Logging in just to see the death screen sometime in late 2013 felt like a small part of me died. I get it, the 3DS was a hot new thing and all, but the fact that it wasn't readily available from the get-go is what killed the momentum. At the end of the day, while the tools can be limited, I at least can be thankful that Flipnote Studio helped some creators get into the world of animation. Surprisedly, radxflipnote is a channel that still makes flipnotes to this day, so at least it's good to know some creators are still kicking juice. I'll definitely miss the service for what it was, but I'll always be thankful for it being our version of TH-cam. (Er... I guess TikTok before TikTok.)
I am so grateful I was lucky enough to get my hands on flipnote hatena and flipnote 3d when I did. It’s insane how they made it an exclusive, I loved hatena and sudomemo and imma miss it hella. I’m glad to see that some people still make flipnotes and I love that you made this video recently too ❤
Flipnote Hatena was such a beautiful experience. Society was transitioning from dial to wifi and i got to experience Hatena and its downfall alongside exploring wider ever reaching internet. Thank god for the more universal TH-cam i found many more communities to be a part of. Flipnotes will be missed dearly but we can broadcast ourselves literally anywhere now
I remember watching so many flip notes back then and making my own. I loved it so much. I was so excited for flipnote 3D. My dad even took me when the dsi and then the 3ds after to get it when it came out, I was so sad to hear it got delayed. But still so stoked to see how it would be especially with that sample video they used with the plane. It looked so much better because of the different layers. I waited and waited. I was even a club Nintendo member. And I waited. Sold my 3ds for a better console and then never knew it came out. I thought they canceled it. I then got a 2ds but couldn't remember my login to my old Nintendo account so I was never able to download and use it. It is sadly but seriously one of my biggest regrets. I would love to just use flipnote 3d once lol
@@GregCubed lol yeah. It was like you said lightning in bottle. Great video and commentary. I thought of flipnote and looked up flipnote out of nostalgia yours was first to come up. Cool to hear other people had the same love for such a simple program.
Aw man this brought back a lot of memories. I was actually an active user of Sudomemo in 2016-17. Even though my flipnotes weren't ever that big on the platform, I loved making them and Flipnote was very influential in fueling my passion for animation. I was especially active in making flipnotes during my middle school years, when me, my sister, and a friend of mine would all make flipnotes on the same DSi, and later 3DS. Many bus rides to and from school were spent making funny and stupid flipnotes, and those are some of my most cherished memories from those days. Together, we had built a whole world with lore, characters, and running gags through those flipnotes, which was pretty cool come to think of it. It was like our own TV show! I still sometimes make flipnotes today, except now I upload them to TH-cam rather than Sudomemo (mostly because my DSi's SD Card slot broke in 2018, which promptly caused me to switch to the 3DS version of Flipnote). Despite not being as big as it was during the early-2010s, the Flipnote community is still around, and I'm very grateful for Nintendo's fun little animation app for developing my art and animation skills, and for fueling my current passion for creating.
I pray Flipnote comes back. I was there back then and I loved the community back then. All the animations people made and Nintendo animations made by legandary animators back then was a gift. I hope it can come back strong one day.
I remember the comic book style of the app. I used to always read through people's illustrated stories for hours and hours. My brother was into the stick fights. Good times, good memories.
INCREDIBLE video!!! love to see videos on this topic as flipnote hatena was sorta my entire life as a kid and i'm glad to see other people share their experiences with it as well! i do think it is worth mentioning that stars did have *some* value... or at least some of them did. there were 5 colors, and while you could add an infinite number of yellow stars (it was VERY tedious as you could only add 10 at a time, and in order to add more you had to exit the flipnote details and reenter in order for the button to work again) the other colors of stars were mainly obtained by spending money...and it was a bit of a gamble. they were green, red, blue, and purple in order of rarity (never saw a purple star once, they were that rare) and when you bought star packs it was up to chance how much of each color you got. they could also be used to buy profile themes iirc
I remember the day I got a Flipnote Hatena account, if you were under a certain age (13 i think?) you had to mail in a physical permission slip from your parents. I waited a week to get my account and then realized I could've just lied about my age when I signed up lol
I grew up with flipnote, but not the online part. Due to strict parents and receiving my dsi at the ripe age of 6, my dsi was never connected to the internet and years later when i went to connect it, the internet was restricted with a long forgotten parental code. I did enjoy it tho, i didnt grasp the concept of animating so i would make mine in more of a slideshow style and the audio would be me singing opera. Idk why i loved singing opera but
I remember waiting for Flipnote 3D to come out in 2013 just to be depressed and disappointed that it got delayed as long as it did. And to make matters worse when it did finally come out there was no online. The memories I had on hatena both on the europe and US servers stayed with me so I made some flipnotes on Flipnote 3D. But after a few months and life went by I lost interest. Without a community to share them to or to see other people's work, I moved on. If nothing else Nintendo are masters at disappointment.
Tbh, this was better than the SpongeBob music video in my opinion. Good job. I hope you could do more history or what happened videos of cartoons and games.

I remember a certain series about Mario and Luigi that was created by a user named Ronald (and a set of numbers that I forget). I remember that he made them until the every end of Flipnote. I used to go on Hatana everyday hoping he uploaded the next part. He had two flipnote series that were essentially high quality animated Mario and Luigi fanfiction. The story, especially in the 2nd series, was actually really incredible. And I thought that maybe since I was like 9-10 when I first saw them I had rose tinted goggles, but rewatching it as an adult... no they're actually insanely high quality. The animation, mainly in the 2nd half of the sequel M&L series, was no joke, some of the best I remember ever seeing on Hatana. And I'm saying this as someone who is in animation school with my secondary hobby being writing. Even as a little kid, I actually made an effort to download all of the episodes of those two Mario and Luigi series from Ronald. Unfortunately, I waited until the last second was only able to get the 2nd half of the second series. But I actually managed to perserve the entirety of the said second half and the whole first series. I'm pretty sure that outside of the OG creator, I'm the only person in the world who has preserved the majority of his Mario and Luigi fanseries. I really hope at least one other person knows what I'm talking about. This flipnotes were MASSIVE on Hatana back in the day, and I remember them having insanely high star ratings. Even as an adult when this was over an decade ago now, I honestly still think about those M&L fan serieses Ronald made. I geinunely wonder what that guy is doing now. I honestly think his two series is partially what got me into fanfiction and drawing at that age in my life. Him and his series definitely has had a lasting impact on me even over a decade later. Ronald, if you're out there, I hope you're doing well for yourself.
Yooo I love your videos I'm so happy to see a new video!! I completely forgot about flipnote. I never had my DSI hooked up to the internet, so i unfortunately never got to experience all it had to offer. I didn't know it was such a big deal at one point.
Also, apparently there was an online feature for Flipnote 3-D, but it was only in Japan and got shut down there is a revival project for it just like flipnote Hatena on the DSI, but neither of them feel the same
I wish I'd saved more flipnotes back in the day. I remember how I'd watch them before going to school in the morning, and while most of it I probably wouldn't be able to watch now without cringing due to how outdated they are (And the fact that most were made by children), I still really miss it. I *have* Flipnote 3D, but I've hardly ever touched it cause it really just doesn't feel like there's any real point. (Also, BosS still uploads, just on TH-cam instead. And my god, his work is still ridiculously impressive)
I never had a DS so I found out about Flipnote studio only recently and learning that Nintendo shut down the online services only in 4-something years after its release reminded me why I hated them. But then I realized that even if they kept it running and even released a compatible app for 3DS, it would probably die anyway cause smartphones were becoming more and more common so why would anyone use the limited Flipnote when they could use a proper animation app, upload to TH-cam and reach a larger audience? So yeah, you're absolutely right about "lightning in a bottle", if you weren't there to witness it, you won't witness anything like that anymore.
There were also the sprite library flipnotes that people could use for their animations and it was pretty cool too. It's funny watching them because they go max speed with a random song. But they did deserve some stars. Another one was there were orange and green stars? And the green stars were you have to pay or trade them like bits in twitch and those are the star beggars beg for Edit: OH I ALSO REMEMBER the hack where people tell you to put the sock on top of the ds mic to make a pop filter while recording from your desktop computer or something
One kind of funny artifact from flipnotes is how for some reason everyone would always speed up their flipnote after recording their voice, resulting in a high pitched "chipmunk" voice. I guess it's because people were too embarrassed to show their real voice? Or maybe they just thought the high-pitched voice was funny? Idk.
flipnote dsi and 3d still has online services made by nintendo fans :D there’s sudomemo for dsi (all yous need is to go into wifi settings to get hatena back) and kaeru world gallery (you need a hacked 3ds/2ds) :D
Back in 2019 I decided I wanted to get flipnote for my 3DS, it was a convoluted method and kind of confusing but I watched a tutorial and managed to download it for free using platinum points, that being said, now that the 3DS eshop and online servers have been shut down you can’t get it that way anymore, in fact, you can’t get it at all unless your 3DS has been modded (not that i condone that, Nintendo) , which really, really sucks because I wanted to help my friend download it only to find this out. Flipnote was done so dirty and it’s really really sad! Flipnote and pictochat equally, because they were so iconic:( Not even doodleswap works anymore with the severs shut down💔
Hey, I love watching these new flipnote videos. I am trying to find a long lost hatena animator as well, while searching for videos. I liked the video, it shed light on what flipnote was without being deep in detail.

All this to say, I'm about to turn 20 literally tomorrow, and this video hit my recommended at just the right time to hit me super hard in the feels.
I have an interesting story about this. considering i live on a small island in the Bahamas, I didnt have many friends and i was the only one who had a DSi at the time.
as a kid who doodled in the back of his books constantly, i still remember the day i downloaded flipnote studio using wifi at the local library. i would go there every single day and watch and create flipnotes. some of my favorite artists there were Squirt and a lesser known K66Gunso or something like that.
and i was devastated when they took it down not too long later cause i was just getting my own name out there and starting my own little community. it was the only real form of social interaction i had with kids my age who liked the same things.
i wonder if you can make one of these for Colors!3d as well, a lot of the people i knew from flipnote ended up migrating there after the release of the 3ds
great video btw!! sorry for this long ass comment 😅
legend has it that those two ronald mcdonalds are still fighting to the death to this day....
and then along came gamblecore
I am SO friggin glad I finally found a video of someone who experienced the same thing I did. This was literally the only thing that kept me alive during my edgy times in middle school XD
bruh i was obsessed with flipnote hatena lmao. I remember I got into the band Hollywood Undead because I saw a flipnote that had their song "Young" on it lmao. Gizmo was one of my favorites too lol. Also you using a pencil as a stylist really bothered me. Great video Greg as always. I love seeing your new uploads
Great video. Definitely a nostalgic topic for me.
Raxdflipnote: who said it was dead 🗿
I am so grateful I was lucky enough to get my hands on flipnote hatena and flipnote 3d when I did. It’s insane how they made it an exclusive, I loved hatena and sudomemo and imma miss it hella. I’m glad to see that some people still make flipnotes and I love that you made this video recently too ❤
Flip note hantena brings me back to my childhood 2009-2013 I remember people like Boss, Gizmo, and Anthony.
Part of me feels the same way but since there was no online functionality, I don’t feel like I missed out on much lol
@@GregCubed lol yeah. It was like you said lightning in bottle. Great video and commentary. I thought of flipnote and looked up flipnote out of nostalgia yours was first to come up. Cool to hear other people had the same love for such a simple program.

“Aw dang it!”
I'm an 01 kid shout-out to all my fellow flipnote enjoyers I'd watch that shit religiously
I remember the comic book style of the app. I used to always read through people's illustrated stories for hours and hours. My brother was into the stick fights. Good times, good memories.
Flipnote is BACK baby. Thanks to raxdflipnote
Superb. Brings back memories.
I remember when the Flipnote 3d announcement came out and they said the new online service would cost a $1 fee, everyone lost their shit!
Phenomenal video, glad to hear people had the exact same intro to internet culture via Flipnote Hatena as me haha
Stick fights were my favorite. 100%, B0SS, Clash of The Titans, Red. It was all so good
You're so good at this type of video essay. It's surprising you don't have more subscribers. 10/10 video :)
It’s honestly a blessing that sudomemo exists
I remember the day I got a Flipnote Hatena account, if you were under a certain age (13 i think?) you had to mail in a physical permission slip from your parents. I waited a week to get my account and then realized I could've just lied about my age when I signed up lol
Excellent video Gregory! However at 6:03 I believe you meant to say "all sorts of other internet humor that is still hilarious to this day"
Excellent point, however I am inside of your walls
And now its back baby
The worst part of flipnote 3d is that it’s actually pretty damn good. Had Nintendo not pulled a Nintendo, it probably would’ve done really well
Amazing video as always, love you greg
I grew up with flipnote, but not the online part. Due to strict parents and receiving my dsi at the ripe age of 6, my dsi was never connected to the internet and years later when i went to connect it, the internet was restricted with a long forgotten parental code. I did enjoy it tho, i didnt grasp the concept of animating so i would make mine in more of a slideshow style and the audio would be me singing opera. Idk why i loved singing opera but
Raxdflipnote: Nah I'd I'd win
Raxdflipnote is bringing it back!
it's actually not that complicated... Flipnote died when DS died... it was a natural cause of death... it came and went, just like that
I remember having a DSI gifted to me from my fav uncle and i didnt know who this app really work,i only had 3 games and when i got bored i used flip note, all the things i did on it werent so good,i didnt really understood how they work, but i liked the sound it make when u draw, the frogs on the starters screen bring back memories,i just liked to stare at the frogs sometimes ,idk why but i liked it very much even if i didnt understood the program,i didnt know how to connect the internet on my DSI so my option were limered, when i grew up and got a good phone that had a solid battery life and choud work i fured out how to connect it,but when i watned to do that,i lost my DSI and i stll did not fiind it :( rn i want to start a channel on soxial media with animstion, but DSI dont sell anymor and a 3DS is expensive like a switch, love ur videos and i wanna fiid my ds and try again
We got something closer to it, flipaclip. The problem is: they don't know how to make the app better and most animators of the community are dead.
Ronald, if you're out there, I hope you're doing well for yourself.
more people should be talking about this
Yooo I love your videos I'm so happy to see a new video!! I completely forgot about flipnote. I never had my DSI hooked up to the internet, so i unfortunately never got to experience all it had to offer. I didn't know it was such a big deal at one point.
The stick fights on flipnotes hatena were pretty amazing.
I had so much fun with flipnote hatena! I am so glad I was able to experience flipnote Hatena.
The creator Anthony still animates! Infact i believe he's a cleanup artist for the helluvaboss team
7:31 Damn that unlocked a hidden memory
Man I remember just opening up my DSI and opening up flip notes and it just didn’t work a sad day in my childhood
I have flipnote studio on my 3ds. I downloaded it by redeeming my Nintendo points or whatever they’re called
Also, apparently there was an online feature for Flipnote 3-D, but it was only in Japan and got shut down there is a revival project for it just like flipnote Hatena on the DSI, but neither of them feel the same
I never knew all of this. I'm so glad someone took the time to explain this all. It makes sense. 🎭
And it's a bit heartbreaking.
flipnote hatena was goated, at least us real og's got to experience it while it lasted.
Finally some Flipnote love
What’s crazy is I remember all of this. For me it was popular in late middle school to early hs. I graduated 2015 and loved this app on the dsi.
until raxdflipnote and zanelittle revived it
I wish I'd saved more flipnotes back in the day.
As someone who was born in the late 2000s, I'm sad that I never got to experience Flipnote firsthand.
And the green stars were you have to pay or trade them like bits in twitch and those are the star beggars beg for
Edit: OH I ALSO REMEMBER the hack where people tell you to put the sock on top of the ds mic to make a pop filter while recording from your desktop computer or something
Idk.
Nintendo really likes screwing over their fans
I miss flipnote hatena so much
my life isn't complete until I can access every Fred Blankenburg Flipnote. His acoustic parodies of songs were golden
Wonder if Flipnote Studio would have a Switch release
In remembering flipnote, I’m gonna go watch cup of dirt
"do you like waffles?" no.
everybody: enjoying the video
me: watching his eyebrows
flipnote dsi and 3d still has online services made by nintendo fans :D there’s sudomemo for dsi (all yous need is to go into wifi settings to get hatena back) and kaeru world gallery (you need a hacked 3ds/2ds) :D
Oh... Right in the nostalgia...
I was hoping it would make a return. In fact, I think it would be perfect to make it one of the Nintendo Apps
The youtuber compulsion to unnecessarily hold the expensive Mike like a magic scepter.
I am trying to find a long lost hatena animator as well,
while searching for videos.
I liked the video, it shed light on what flipnote was without being deep in detail.
