- The giant panda cub, born in August at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, D.C., is a star attraction, with an online audience via the zoo's "Panda Cam." xiao qi ji 小奇迹. She made the effort and did pronounce the tones of xiao qi ji right, which is as rare as panda for a non-Chinese speaker.

@Andrew Riela yeah, you are right that they are under contract - it’s China’s “Panda Diplomacy” (long history, if you Google it), it’s suppose to express China’s goodwill internationally by sharing their National Treasure these Pandas to the world.

Just curious. Why is China willing to put forth so much effort to protect pandas but not tigers or pangolins? And not just China. Everywhere really.

They are so precious! How come they are in such a small pen, devoid of any comforts or greenery?
Actually the size of the den matches what the Giant Panda choose in nature sometimes in a hollowed out bottom of a tree--they are most protected there. The Smithsonian is choosing to simulate what conditions are chosen in nature. Actually he and his loving mama have access to larger rooms and a rock like playpen area, where she can take him to nurse and leave him for a while as she goes out in the mornings to a more outdoor area to have acess to her feedings of bamboo and nutritional leaf biscuits as well as other healthy treats - she can hear her cub if he needs her to return to check on him. That is like when they have a lair as the cub can be stashed for safety (in the wild) while the mother forages further to get food as the cub grows. Trust that the Smiithsonian is doing an outstanding job in simulating both the natural habit and letting the cub be nursed by his mother with lots of cuddles in a protected and monitored enviroment.
@@kennethmarks1625 - I wondered. But, there are no obvious soft spaces at all. Dirt & grass may be harder to clean, but they are probably much more comfortable!
So weird seeing the baby and mom behave like human baby and mom. Baby follows mom and mom hugs baby but it baby gets too annoying mom put him down and go look for snacks :D
Where was this support for the san diego zoo when they had 6 different panda babies? The national zoo isn't as good as san diego. I'm glad reasurch is continuing but its because of the san zoo that the national zoo can do anything
