Love so much this Dutch version
This was episode 4 of BZ 2019, so Floor is already participating in 3 episodes: with Henk, Samantha and Rolf. She had already shown them what she was capable of, and they all tried to give a proper reply. Imo this is the episode in which everyone else outdid themselves, so their performances here are perhaps the brightest in the whole show. You've already seen Nemo, Strong and Our Decades In The Sun. You still have 3 :)
A beautiful "recipe" for the show, in which everyone strives to honor others, and not to compete with them.
it's such a cool concept for a show, everything else is really just a competition.
I believe Gabriel is on to something in his feedback to you. Floor made new friends for life in that programme, because she surprised them positively in any way. She was by far the greatest singer in the show, they discovered that pretty fast the hard way - but her personality and humble and caring being, stunned them, because Floor was nothing like they imagined a Metal singer would be - she was (and is) completely opposite. This is why Gabriel is on spot, saying the others performed the best in their lives ever - Floor encouraged them to do this, without knowing - because of just being natural Floor - so they wanted to make her happy.
That 2019 show, set the barrs so high on many levels - extra shows, guest stars, music price, radio shows and so on.
Floor influence through radio, social media and television are of phenomenal value, not only for Nightwish - but also on breaking down the walls between music genres, - and she has Henk by her side now in thos battle, as a gigantic supporter and brother in arms.
After you finish floor night, you may want to check Hank port singing “Noelia” for Rolf. The performance is really emotional and beautiful

True what you think she sings about. An apology to her parents because she sometimes doesn't speak much to them because of her busy life. But to let her parents know that she has a lot of respect for what her parents always have done for her, always protected her etc. which made her a stable person and got a nice adult and Successful life. Every season of this show seems to be a tearjerker. Helps when you have a dog in the fight. But this one, a Dutch-born German opera singer, is flat out stunning. I was really impressed not only with her emotional performance but her voice as a whole. She really did a great job with this song.
I am absolutely familiar with this song... This version is in a language I do not understand much of, but yet, the emotion is EXTREMELY relatable! If I had no Idea about this song, but was driving and THIS version came on the radio... Well it would be nice background music, on it's own. But the emotion in it causing me to find a place to pull over, if really listening. Very enjoyable and relatable by vocal quality alone! Kiitos to the band in this show for all of their wonderful performances, they have a hard job getting all this music right!

I have no idea what she was saying but I had to wipe my eyes more than once, which shows the power of music as you talked about.
Samantha is a kind of dutch Celine Dion. She very professional and she actually nailed every song she did through the whole show. Well, Floor did that too. As a matter of fact the diversity and talent of this whole group of singers is amazing. I only watched this because of Floor, so I haven't seen any other seasons, but I doubt that there have ever been a season to match this.

Samantha has a beautiful, husky quality. she does the song justice and pays wonderful tribute to the Nightwish and Floor
This kind of song always hits deeper in your own language: singing to your father and mother in your mother tongue.

@@I_am_Phil_Lee Everyone was impressed by them. Imagine the bandwidth of styles they played and the different vocalists they worked with - and they nailed it every single time. They said so in an interview that all of sudden request poured in, even international ones, in an amount they had not seen before.
Part of the beauty of this show format is that they put all of these artists on the island of Ibiza off the coast of Spain for a couple weeks to allow them to get to know each other. This enables each artist to learn about the others songs and musical tastes. They each need to find a song to honor one another with when their turn comes up. Samantha is a very good singer. She is very well known in The Netherlands. You can see the look of sadness and satisfaction on Floor's face. Floor and Samantha bonded during this show and kept in touch after it was completed. You should listen to this song from the "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" record. It is very touching and more about the feeling encountered when you leave home to do you own thing in the world. Also while you are doing your own thing your feelings about always have a part of them with you no matter where you are in the world and your longing to reunite soon. Wonderfully done my friend. Loved it and look forward to the next one. Maybe Nightwish' version of this song. Peace.

WOW, thank you for that, I was already emotional after hearing her performance of the song, but reading through the lyrics while thinking about her perfomance, made the hairs on my arm standup. it especially hit home while thinking about my own relationship with my Father before he passed. It has something of the lament of everyone who is forced by career or circumstance to live away from family or miss family events.
Most adults experience this to some extent, so it touches almost all of us.
Samantha did an outstanding job with this, and in some ways, the vocal part is more in her style than is typically Nightwish's, so was an inspired choice. Translating it herself was going above and beyond though!
Nobody comes badly out of that year's series, they all gained by it. The producers have to be congratulated at finding a selection of participants that were so different on the surface, by age or by genre, yet who all managed to step up to the challenge and cross those boundaries.

BTW, Samantha has been a singer for a long time, but her breakthrough really came a few years ago, when she was runner-up in the Voice of Holland. She was finally recognized for her singing and songwriting thereafter, and absolutely rightly so.
Floor and Samantha actually have become good friends during the programme :).

This whole season I was really loving Samantha’s voice, but it wasn’t until she did a Tina Turner song in the duets episode that I realized that’s who she reminds me of.
I was really, really happy to discover her through this show.
Interestingly, the song is a lot more positive as written by Tuomas. It's about how much of ones (good) parents live in oneself and how they have prepared you to go out into the world. It's sad that you have to leave, but you're ready. Samantha has given it her own twist that emphasized the sadness that she, personally feels. Clearly Floor was empathizing with her.

for me the original is more about longing to be with your loved ones. It is written from a touring musician point of view, your always away and what have you missed while being away. Samantha did a brilliant job.

Please, please, do a reaction video of Nightwish's original version. This song is a beautiful ballad that deserves more attention. Mostly because everyone tells you to only listen to live performances by Nightwish. They probably never will perform this song live. Every single band member contributed to its creation and it is so personal to them, being a homage to their parents (mother AND father!), that they had even problems keeping their act together when recording it. They're afraid that all of them would end up in a pool of tears while trying to perform it live.

You don't understand a single word she says.. but you feel it. :-) Be aware, English, Frisian, German and Dutch originate from their common ancester OldEnglish language around the North Sea, maybe thats one of the reasons you feel it and more or less understand it.
Only Tim and Henk somewhat knew about Floor. The others didn't know who she was.
But by the end, they all knew who eachother were and what they were all capable, I really like the format of this show compared to other singing/music shows.

Listening to them speaking Dutch makes me think that I SHOULD understand what they are saying. The reason for that is Dutch is nearly the closest language to English. The second language there is Frisian .. and Frisian is a West Germanic language related to the Anglo Germanic languages ...You can think of the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisian settlers in England after the Romans left .. or in another way (and yes I am paining this with a very broad brush) that Old English and Old Frisian were call it .. close cousins.
I totally get that, I spent a few years working pretty closely with some dudes from the Netheralnds while I lived in the CZ. There were definitley times when they spoke to eachother, I felt like I should be understanding what they said.

I Agree, the most technical performance can have little or no emotional power behind it and it will feel weird or missing something. Especially with something like music.

About your comment about them being sceptical.. you have to realize, this is a Dutch television show. Unfortunatelly Metal is'nt 'big' in the netherlands, you won't hear it on the radio. Traditional dutch people are pretty rigid in their views, and especially in the older generation metal and hardrock are viewed as trailer trash music (slightly exaggerated).. so that's their frame of mind before they heard her sing.

I understand Nightwish themselves will not and cannot do this live, allegedly the recording was difficult as they are all so close to their parents that the song had them all in tears from time to time and also at the first take there was silence from the vocal booth on cue; investigating they found Floor crying in the corner.
It's worth a look at the original and some thought to the emotion and impact of the lyrics.

You really HAVE to watch 'vivo per lei' by Emma Heesters and Henk Poort from the same show. From your vibe, I'm pretty sure you'll love it and the emotion it conveys. It's a very sweet rendition, feels like a proud grandfather with his cute grandchild. When doing this, you also have to keep in mind Emma Heesters is a youtube singer who got famous by making youtube covers of pop songs, so this is totally out of her comfort zone:

In general 'beste Zangers' is - in my opinion - a very strong formula, it's not a contest, but a bunch of talented singers together celebrating music and exploring each other works.
That being said, a lot of good music came from this show, but this particular season was, again in my opinion, the best of them all. Not just because of Floor, but because of the entire group and the song choices.
