Thanks allot for this video. Post leg up never worked for. For me it was an awkward move and i would rather hug my posts standing up with much better results. This makes much more sense.
I don't personally care for the vh, just a awkward stance for me. I'm more concerned about the post lean transition into action in front of the net, like a cross crease. great video.
When we leans on his glove side (left side) he has a hole above his shoulder. If he places the glove on the pad/above his pad he would get taller and cover that hole.
I could see how, at 5:45, transitioning from being into the 'fly from a deep angle and then leaning back to the post... but with the puck deep in the corner, I think the more popularized "dead arm one knee down" (where the post pad is high with the glove up top on the glove side) is going to be a more advantageous foundation to build from.
+StaubersGoalcrease staying on your feet with the puck in deep, maybe not against the corner boards but closer to the net, is going to leave you wide open to a cross seam or centre-bound pass. I think the foundation a goalie takes in this type of situation is what is going to define a butterfly, stand up, or hybrid goalie. A pure butterfly may do this post lean, a standup may do as your suggesting, with a hybrid opting for a dead arm knee up.
I've always had my glove and blocker sit on top of my pads. I don't really see why it's necessary to double cover down low when you could cover more area up top by simply not leaning so much to go all the way to the ice with the glove and blocker. Also couldn't that goalie just do one big knee shuffle to get back to the post rather than a small push? It just seems more controlled that way. It was a great video but just a few questions on
For when your goal goes down is it really needed to slide off the post? I see a lot of movement just to get to the post, it seems as if I was to do exactly what he did, it would have been the goal horn sounding. When he was in butterfly around the 5:45 mark, couldn't he have just dropped down and push over, and get the post between pad and skate? Also at the 6:02 mark, couldn't he have just dropped his leg, instead of coming off, and then making the push back on and leaning into the post? It just seems that there's to much movement in that? I realize it's in "slow mo" to show what he does , but it just seems theres a lot of movement there that causes too much time for an easy goal. Hopefully you can explain this :D
also aren't you able to push off the post, like Quick does instead of picking up your leg and pushing over? Even in the real situation it seems like there's a lot of movement for it.
Probably the best video explanation I have seen on the Post Lean. My only question is do you recommend this save selection for younger players (say 11 year olds) who might not have the height to cover the top corners?
We don't recommend to practice it too much at a young age...only in desperation moves to stop wraparounds, etc. Height is a factor, but mainly that if they get too good at sliding to post when young, they will use it as a crutch, because it actually takes more leg strength to move to the post on your feet. So we need to develop those skills as early as possible. Great question. That was supposed to be in the video, but we missed it during filming.
StaubersGoalcrease I know your post is fairly old, but what the heck, sooo, does this work ok for shorter goalies period? Like I am only 5'8 (adult, just short), I feel like good shooters not right up on me would pick it over my shoulder pretty easily...I guess it would be critical for me to make sure I stay as upright as I can to be as tall as possible in that position?
+Jim C I'm short I cant use that post lean. I need to use the leg up so I can get the glove up. As a short goalie you can't use the post lean on a guy coming out of the corner as they will roof it every time....I also like leg up because I can push off with my edge. I'm 5'6 so imagine my pain......I only use post leans on wrap arounds...
Jim C As long as the puck is quite close to the net, it's hard for them to get it over your shoulder. Taller goalies can use it from a greater distance, but anyone can use it when they are crashing the net at close range.
I'm just a Dad of a Novice goaltender and, in watching this, had no idea what VH (or Reverse VH) could possibly stand for. I was able to find a link on the InGoal Magazine site that explains this technique. ingoalmag.com/technique/v-h-technique-and-the-cup-winning-goal/
Jason Hunt It stands for "Vertical Horizontal" where the post leg is vertical and the other is horizontal. As shown at 2:17 where they call it "Post Leg Up" position.
Here is a great video which explains the pros and cons of reverse VH vs. VH as well. Depending on what kind of a goalie your son is, he may want to consider VH.
I don't really like the version with the glove touching the ice. It's unnecessary to make a double seal with the pads and the glove and you have a huge hole open in the seven hole. I prefer to keep the glove on top of the pads and close the seven hole. Otherwise nice video! :)
A experienced shooter would go across the cress or pick one of the many holes this guy leaves open, no experienced shooter would try to stuff it to shoot in short side when the goalie is doing this. If they did it would be when he is transitioning into it because he opens so much up. wouldnt use this lmao

jalebi man that’s what the leg pad is already there for. All elite goaltenders are glove on top of bad. This looked odd and that’s why. Glove on top allows less lean and better body posture.

Holy shit are those puck marks

Thats why you have a mask. You'd be surprised how many goalies actually headbutt pucks in those situstions
js_greene Yeah, I started to intentionally tilt my head sideways to take away the roof shot.
*You're supposed to lean your head in to seal the top.*
GREAT video. Very helpful. Thanks

only if the arena you play at actually does a good job. A lot of times you'll just move the net instead of yourself

I have a hockey trounment next week and I'm goalie I need help!
At 6:19 if u go down into a post lean the shooter may pass to the other side, and u cant switch side that fast if u r in a post lean.
Joel B unless u have Ur skate blade on the post
The pass is the defender's job
VH is Vertical Horizontal they are not the same as Post Lean
Once you go down, gotta get up

Feels weird on ice for me.

Holes! Holes! HOOOLES!!!)))
Dude it is 2017 now and that is not the VH
He doesn't use the VH technique correctly. It most situations the VH should be used. The RVH should only be used in the correct situations
😂😂😂

Patrick Bösiger ya but if u have ur glove down then it will block a wrap around or passes that r going to the slot

Shaan S. Or you can use your stick
johnny fazbear I dont think you understand this enough to be commenting. We are talking glove side above the pad. You would never use your stick there
@@johnnix_23 no you would use ur stick for blocking the pass and not double covering
