David Draiman is a classically trained vocalist with an incredible range. For me, it's a shame he doesn't do more 'power ballads' but he's generally happy with heavy metal, so this version of Paul Simon's classic song from the '60's is an extraordinary excursion for David and the band. Others have mentioned the bands' amazing live performance of this song on The Conan Show and they're probably right. It's just astonishing how his vocal control has been mastered, even at the very top of his range.
Listen to Disturbed's catalog my friend if you have not already. A Reason To Fight, Hold On To Memories are just a couple of original "ballads" they did throughout the years and aside from Sound Of Silence, they also covered Shout (Tears For Fears), Land Of Confusion (Genesis), And I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (U2), If I Ever Lose My Faith In You (Sting) and a couple others.

Yes! Paul Simon, the writer, now said the song belonged to Disturbed because they depicted the song as he wrote it. What an honor coming from the writer as the BEST cover.
All due respect to the studio version, David Draiman's performance of this song on Conan really showed the true power and range of his voice IMHO (no retakes!). Despite being sick that day, he delivered an epic performance, complete with an orchestra. One for the ages...

That's personal preference. I like the video version much more as that video also tells a compelling story, and his voice sounds much better.

You said exactly what I feel and go through too. Can't hear it without crying, realizing we didn't take the prophetic warning seriously. And now we're paying the price.
I tear up every time I hear this version and I don't know why because I try to watch every reaction video to this song and I am wiping away tears every time. I guess I'm a softy or a music person. I am actually fine being that person. I feel I am getting more out of something that others man never get, and for that, I'm blessed and thankful!
My tears from this song primarily come from the "magnitude of truth" and prophetic content of the lyrics. For me, it is thought provoking and to an extent "convicting". Along with that though, I think it is the incredible facial expression with powerful voice and perfect backdrop of illustrations that make it hit home for me.
You're not a softie. Your reaction is absolutely right. Whether you understand it or not, something in you recognizes that this is not just a song. It's a message. One we missed the first time around with the original so long ago.

1. David Draiman's vocal coach is Melissa Cross, WORLD FAMOUS for dozens of bands and lead singers. 2. David Draiman has taken OPera lessons for years (I follow these things.) 3. I've seen them in concert 7 times, and David controls the band and gets the BIGGEST mosh pits going that you've EVER seen (if you EVER get a chance to go see them...PLEASE GO.) 4. If you like THAT version, look up the LIVE version on TH-cam from Conan O'Brien, I believe it was THE MOST watched video that year. 5. Google other songs from Disturbed live to see his range of vocal techniques, particularly rock.
David Draiman was raised as an Orthodox Jew and his amazing voice is due to the fact that not only was he born with it, but he is also a trained Cantor.

he is in fact a formally trained Cantor(Jewish religious singer of scriptures/verses) AND IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT if you watch the Conan version he was sick that day and had a sore throat and still delivered a flawless performance.

David Draiman was raised to be a Jewish Cantor so his vocal training began at an early age and damn does it show. Disturbed's The Light was also recommended as a follow up reaction and its amazing. Spiritual without being religious ... it's my go-to when my darkness threatens my peace.
Some of your reactions will be downers. Monsters by James Blunt tore me up ... on the floor crying for my mommy. The Light brought me around & still does. (David sings with amazing passion and the musicians play the same ... The Light a good example)

Hello Ladies, Just came across your reaction to this song. Not sure if anyone informed you what the song means. So it was written in the 60s by Simon and Garfunkel. The song is talking about how no one was communicating with each other, they were all engulfed in their television. Same is today how we are are always on our mobile devices and not talking with one another. In the song it reference the Neon gods, that is referring to the TV.
AND…that is why David Draiman will forever be my Rock crush!!! His voice is like butter!!
Hats off to their ability to create a unique arrangement that equally matches Draiman's voice.

Be advised ladies, David is one heck of a vocalist. He has training. He has a great vocal range and power when needed with a lot of tone & warmth. I think you two should do more disturbed....

Nothing against the studio version, but today's music technology ensures that it all sounds great. If you really want to get an appreciation for what David Draiman's voice is capable of, you need to watch him sing this epic song live. His performance on Conan, for example, was one for the ages (although the duet with Myles Kennedy is also exceptional). Complete with an orchestra, and despite being sick that day, Draiman's performance was so phenomenal that Conan celebrated it in 2020 as the first video from his show get 100 million views. If you get a chance to react to this version, it will not disappoint.

Well, the Conan version is also touched up. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE the conan version. But Conans team auto-tuned it. This isn't news, but i'm guessing you might not have known, since you made the argument; "today's music technology ensures that it all sounds great".

That may be true but much more can be done in studio to a track than can be done while performing live on a stage in front of an audience. It's like night and day.

David Draiman started his vocal training at an early age when his parents had an idea for him to become a Jewish Cantor. That dream was derailed when at the age of 16 he found his girlfriend after she'd committed suicide. His ability to touch the rage that brought out of him of course lends itself to metal music and a star was born. In this cover u can hear the righteous anger of Paul Simon because no one listened to his warning 50 years ago when this song was written. In fact Paul Simon has said this song is now Disturbed's ... that's how impressive HE thought their cover was.
I'd recommend The Light by Disturbed...its spiritual without being religious and imo shows the group's growth without losing their metal roots.
Another incredible vocalist is Geoff Tate from Queensryche. Honestly I can't wait to see your faces when you react to Silent Lucidity lol ... especially if you've reacted to Take Hold of the Flame first lol
great reaction guys! David Draiman (the lead singer) certainly has one of the most powerful voices ever and this song was truly a masterpiece (782m views as of now) and in an interview said they never had any idea it would do anything like this. I know a few people have suggested the live version and it is excellent no doubt but I couldn't tell much difference from this, but what do I know? If you want to do an impressive female metal singer, check out Jinjer, any of their songs really but you might want to start with "Pisces Live" ... anyway have an awesome day, I'll be checking out more of your reactions!
Technical comment, when you talk (and there's nothing wrong with commenting as you go), the audio level on the video drops, which kind of breaks the immersion. Your comments are great, but it chops up the song a bit.

In case you don't now nightwish is a symphonic metal band with a lead female vocalist.

Being a hopeless romantic, and having a fascination with the Chinese Historical Drama scene, and most of all having Dimash giving you all the emotional background, well, what more could you ask.
