    Oh, here's something else I would like to mention that saves on waste, expense and time when testing wick sizes. This relates to the section of your video where you turn the candles upside down on the rack and put them in the oven to melt them down. Don't attach/insert wicks when you pour the test candles. Instead, poke a hole in the center of the candles with a metal skewer stick once they have completely hardened. Measure how tall the wick needs to be, cut the wick tab off and insert the wick (right side up cause some wicks are directional and won't burn properly if you insert them upside down). Of course you only want to do this with jars that are at least 2.5" - 3" deep, otherwise after 2 or 3 test burns the wicks will be falling over. This way, if you test a wick size and it is definitely way to large or too small then all you have to do is pull the wick out while the wax is still soft. Then hit the top of the candle with the heat gun to level the top off again and let it harden. Use the metal skewer again to poke a hole in the center, insert a different size wick to test. You can keep repeating this with the same candle till you find the best wick size and you can also top off the candle with more wax mix too once it burns down. Once you find the best wick for that jar, wax and scent mix then you can make a new test candle with the winning wick properly attached and do a test burn all the way to the bottom of the jar.

      I do have a question about test burning. I am not including any fragrance or color in my candles. After the burn test I extinguished the flame and allowed to cool. Can I now perform a performance test on these test burned candles or should I start from scratch with a new pour with the best performing wick? My candles are beeswax:coconut oil in a 2:1 ratio poured into WECK canning jars, I am working with the straight sided, 2.25" diameter, 3" tall. The best wick so far for this size is #1 square braided prewaxed tabbed wick. I do have a little wax hangup and hope this resolves during the performance test. Any advice or comments are greatly appreciated!

      Once you've determined the best performing wicks, I would recycle everything else and start from scratch.

      @@TimberRidgeGifts Thank you so much for a reply! I decided to do a performance test on this candle I mentioned and not recycle yet, I am on the 3rd burn on this candle - the second test it performed well but still having wax hang up, it didn't catch up. But now on the 4th burn the flame is tall and dancing. I quites down then starts dancing again. Ugh. what now. This is due to heat convection currents in the jar? any comments or recommendations appreciated! I just watched the video for the 4th time :)

      I can't find much detailed information on the wax/oil combo I am creating, I think I need to test the temperature of the wax blend as it is melting in the candle. Then start looking for wicks which perform well for this temp wax? Am I looking in the wrong direction?

      using a digital read thermometer I burned the candle awhile to get a melt pool, blew it out and stuck the thermometer in the wax pool. I get 140. Any thoughts on this and how it might be impacting my results? TIA!

    I have learned so much from your videos! Thank you so much!! My current challenge is getting the wax to have a smooth top (no sinkholes or roughness) as well as having the wax adhere to the jar with no wet spots. I’m just testing different pour temps for now to see what happens and hopefully I’ll find the magic number. My husband thinks it’s the wax itself.

    I had to read comments and found only one that mentioned what I hoped you'd point out. Wicks are woven or braided and if you insert the wick in the wrong direction, you get a trio of mushrooms at the top after an hour of burn. I was hoping you'd show a close up of the directional placement of the wick for a clean burn. Wick packaging used to do that, but now that so many come from overseas, directions are neglected. Wire core wicks stand straighter for filling containers, but again can be placed in the wrong weave direction.

    Amazingly detailed video-thank you!
    What if your wick is mushrooming a lot but the candle struggles to reach the full melt pool? Seems like such a contradiction because a wick that's too large would create a huge melt pool, but it doesn't fully, yet it mushrooms :( and this is with the minimum amount of f/o 😓

    Hello! Can you help me figuring out what kind of wick I can use to provide a slow burn for mold candle. The candles are small about 4-5” and I’m using coconut soy wax and alil of beeswax to harden candle. ? Please help

  • @chrisharris5497
    @chrisharris5497 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for this video, as a new candle maker I’ve been pulling my hair out when it comes to wicks, I thought I’d cracked it the other night when I finally got a decent hot throw and a nice consistent flame but the following day when I lit it I then had a much poorer hot throw as well as a majorly dancing flame. To say I was disappointed was a major understatement
    May I ask a question though please buddy, in that bag of wicks I’m guessing you’ve got wicks for soy wax as well as paraffin wax, maybe even for a parasoy blend, I’m not sure what wax you’re using but do you use the wicks aimed at your specific wax or do you just try a few sizes of every wick whether they are aimed at your wax or not? I’m in the UK and our choices of both wicks and waxes is far less than what’s available in the US. Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer

    2 questions. What do you suggest if you perform a wick test and don't have a "ideal" result. One size created the mushroom effect, while the size directly below it, caused a small melt pool and tunneled. Also, when you accidentally mix too much wax and fragrance, can you allow it to harden in a container and reheat it at a low temp to pour later?

    • @TimberRidgeGifts
      @TimberRidgeGifts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      First question: I would run the test again using a couple of each. It could be likely that there was a defect or other unknown factor that could have affected the wicks or the candles and gave you less than desirable results. I would run it back again just to make sure.
      Second: I'm not a fan of remelting and reusing scented wax. Not in products for sale anyhow. The reason being, that as the wax melts, some or all of the fragrance oil will be burnt off, but there is no way to know just how much. So when you reuse the wax and add more fragrance oil, without knowing what the starting point is, there is no way of knowing what your final fragrance load is. Too high and it could potentially cause aesthetic or performance issues, or even fire hazards.

    If you are using a jar with the same exact same 3" diameter but one is taller than the other (essentially moving from a straight sided 12 oz glass jar to the exact same width jar in a 16oz size) do I need to do this entire process again or should the wick that works for the 12 oz also work for the 16 oz even with the added height of the jar?

    • @TimberRidgeGifts
      @TimberRidgeGifts  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The height will not affect anything. If the glass composition is thicker, it could reflect more heat and need to be wicked down. But more that likely the same wick will work just as well. since you are changing jars, I'd make a really small batch at first to test just in case, but after that I'd run with it!

    this has been the most helpful out of all the videos ive watched and with mass testing. What diameter are the jars there and how much wax do they hold? What wax is that also? I have been testing on 3 and 3.5 diameter opening jars and getting frustrated. Ive used soy 464 with eco 8, 10, 12, 14 and 12 seems like the best but once you blow it out and re light them, theres wax on the walls so it starts to tunnel. Also how long do I let the candles cure for before testing properly?

      Fast Break Sports Network Great question! I am not a fan of the mysterious and sometimes harmful contents of fragrance oils. And scent is of less importance to me as incorporating too much EO make everything way more expensive, sooo, just a few drops to simply enhance the experience and infuse with energy/intention. IMO

    Thanks for the video Tim! We are testing both 464 and 444 wax. We are also testing a variety of fragrance suppliers as well as varying our wicks. Our candles look great on first pour, however after we burn them, the wax is becoming pitted post burn. The once smooth surface has craters . Any suggestions?

    • @TimberRidgeGifts
      @TimberRidgeGifts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can actually be fairly common to have that happen. I've chased that problem around quite a bit and came to the conclusion that there must be certain additives or solvents in some fragrance oils which cause it to bond to the wax molecules in a weird way. It's best just to accept that soy wax can be stupid some times. I can accept the fact that it may look a little weird after use...after all, you are setting it on fire. :)

    • @TimberRidgeGifts

      yes, very much so. Different wick series are designed for different types of wax. Some burn hotter and brighter to compensate for the higher melting points of different waxes.

      hmmm, have never tried to completely reuse it. Might be good to reuse in chunk candles, but I don't think it would be as good as using virgin wax.

    I'm confused. The HTP 83 is smaller than an HTP 104 correct? But the HTP 83 has a better melt pool than the HTP 104.
    I just started making candles GB 464, 10% FO from candle science and had a melt pool that barley reached the edge using an eco 10 wick in a 8 oz jelly jar so I then tried the HTP 104 and it's even smaller.
    By the looks of this video and how the HTP 83 seems to burn better than the HTP 104 do you recommend I try the HTP 83?

    Great video! Question.......How big of a room do you test in for that container, and for a 16 oz jar do you test in a bigger area?
    What do costumers expect out of a mason jar or a 16 oz as far as hot throw goes?
    Or is it all subjective...

    • @TimberRidgeGifts
      @TimberRidgeGifts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jessica Bell DeWitt it’s fairly subjective, but basically you don’t want a tiny candle in a huge room. The rooms I tested these 8-ounce candles in were about 15x15. Most customers seem to understand that room size is relative to the amount of room a particular candle will fill.

    Based on your results, would you say the wick guide is accurate? I have different sized jars (tall, short, etc.). How do I get the candle to fill the whole room with fragrance, is it as simple as to add more fragrance to the mixture? Thank you for the videos!

    I do have a question. What are the differences in the wick filaments (cotton, zinc, paper, etc)? How do the filaments impact burn and melt pool?

    • @TimberRidgeGifts
      @TimberRidgeGifts  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jes B. Some are designed for specific wax types, some will burn hotter than others, some will burn differently than others such as self trimming wicks that are designed to curl into themselves in to the hottest part of the flame to constantly keep the excess wick burned away.

    Wonderful video, I learned so much! Question: when you speak of container diameters, are you referring to the jar opening or the wider base part of the jar. I have apothecary jars that are 3" at the top opening but widen out to almost 4". Thanks!

    • @TimberRidgeGifts
      @TimberRidgeGifts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +greenteablend the diameter refers to the width at its most narrow point.

    Excellent Video, very good especially when you teach how reused the wax on this test. We don't need throw away money. Jajaja. You know, I just starting in to this, in my home we consume a lot candles, we like a lot the Yankees candles 16 oz, or bigger. Here we go.
    Do you know what kind wick they used on those candle. I looking, touching is hard, look like have strong wick. I wish to now more about it. I really like to hear your opinion. Thanks men.

    • @TimberRidgeGifts
      @TimberRidgeGifts  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm good question. It's hard to tell just by looking and touching, and of course Yankee Candle in not going to tell us lol. If I had to guess, I'd say it was a specialty wick made exclusively for them. There may be a commercial wick available to nus that is comparable to the one they use. But I doubt we'd be able to get our hands on the exact wick that they use.

    Awesome videos, Tim! Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge with us. I was wondering about your thoughts regarding wick testing... Say, you have a candle that pours with smooth tops (I use C3) but when during test burn, I end up having a sink hole after the candle cools. How big of an issue is this? Is the candle not sellable, etc? Thank you!
