He's lucky. He endangered himself & those trying to help him. Why on earth move after being told Search & Rescue was on it's way when he wasn't in mortal danger? I glad no one was hurt.
Exactly! We were there when it happened. So many people were running to get help. We made multiple calls to 911 updating them on his status. We left when search and rescue arrived. I can’t believe he didn’t wait.
Maybe he thought he was in mortal danger. He had been submerged in that icy water... maybe he thought, if something happened to delay search & rescue team, he may be too cold and numb to move himself anymore...better to take action while he still could. Of course I'm just speculating... it's a crazy situation, and he's lucky to be alive!
Fortunately a happy outcome. Hopefully this will get more attention because I see people climb over that railing all the time. The consequences are real.
I was there. His choice was the log are hypothermia. He is a smart, strong, brave man. He used his pocket knife to give him purchase on the wet, icy log. He is out of the hospital and finished his vacation.
My apologies, but Smart, Strong and Brave do not intentionally put themselves in danger...unless they have a suicide streak in them. This person is LUCKY, that's about it.

I have always disliked those logs in the pictures of Sol Duc Falls. I guess I'm going to look at them in a whole new way.
