  • I've avoided studying anatomy because it was overwhelming. So I took both Mogoon and Chyan's Coloso courses on anatomy for 7 days, to learn their secrets on how they recommend to study anatomy.

    My best tip for anyone studying anatomy is trying to first do gestures down. It helps with poses later, you learn proportions, and you get an simplified idea of each limb and bodypart.
    Afterwards you can get into the nitty gritty to fixen your understanding. But in general id say good gesture and posing is more important than knowing most of what anatomy has to offer, except for obviously the very basics

      THIS YESS I honestly think loose gestures are the best bc you dont gotta be perfect it's just quick sketches too that easily get you to understand how form and shape works and I too am also an artist :DDD I haven't done them in a long time BUT you make me wanna do them again TT

      One teacher once told us to learn "gesture and figure drawing before learning anatomy" and it really made sense once I put my mind into these first two.
      Anatomy is cherry on top, and honestly I obsessed a lot in anatomy before learning to have porportionate, fluid characters and it showed in my drawings.

    • @neeevirus
      @neeevirus ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Actually gesture is a whole separate thing to learn. It's like a different stage from anatomy
      A clean way to learn is start with gesture then proportions then anatomy then lastly perspective (this is also really important for compositions, making interesting angles, and depth)

    • @aimeebintang

      Gesture is SO hard to learn for me, because I always ended up with stiff poses instead of stylised one (sometimes they don't even look like the reference photo)

    For gestures, a key thing to keep in mind is EXAGGERATING the pose! Try to push the pose a bit further to help create more movement. Proko has a good video on gestures that explain how to push a pose. I honestly feel like studying gesture is a bit more helpful than focusing on anatomy and bone structure, especially in helping an illustration look more interesting. Keep your lines long and confident and cut into them if you need to! This will help you greatly! Overall you are doing a great job!!

    Personally, my favourite (and personally most effective way) to study anatomy, isnt to study muscle groups and bone structure, or even basic cubes, but to see the different shapes the body is and can be made up of! Like stacking shape toys as a child i guess. For example, for me the torso can be broken into 3* (i cant count it seems) seperate shapes: An oval or rounded rectangle in my case, a circle, and a triangle. Couple shapes with perspective and you've got a pretty good foundation for drawing anatomy! Of course you still have to know how it looks, but shapes can also be used in this way, another example being how the chest muscles kinda form a trapezoid/rectangle shape, and the trap muscle kinda looks like a kite.
    In the end though, use what works best for you! Theres no one way to study and learn :))

    • @reVALcoree

      Agreed!!! Thinking of the body in different shapes has helped me so much!

  • @sebproud
    @sebproud ปีที่แล้ว +150

    If I'm just look at the gesture drawings comparison, I definitely think you gained a lot more clarity in defining certain parts of the body, but the gestures do seem to be more rigid. Learning the human structure from boxes is definitely helpful to establish correct perspective and proportions, but be careful using them because they are inherently rigid objects and if its all you got to rely on the drawings may not be as fluid as you'd want. Not saying that boxes are bad, there's so many ridiculously good artists out there that use it to establish an illustration, but most of them usually have those years of grind behind them. I think if your goal was in getting better at the structure of a body you've definitely taken a solid step towards it.
    For me anatomy is super hard to get to a point where you actually feel good with drawings in any perspective, i know people can spend years on it just to have enough confidence in the study. I can't really give much solid advice other than keep practicing, either by drawing or watching other artists draw. You're on the right track and I know you'll continue getting better and better. Great video and keep up the good work!

  • @kaoru9829

    I still have a long way to go with anatomy, it's one of my biggest struggles in art ngl. But I think the one thing that has helped me the most is gesture drawing. It's not as satisfying as drawing cute anime girls, but you learn so much from it. I think that learning about muscles and bones and all of that is important if you feel like you're hitting a wall with your art, but if you try to memorize all of that early on, you're going to confuse and overwhelm yourself. Being able to look at a picture of a person and accurately represent what you see in a short amount of time is, in my opinion, more beneficial than being able to look at a picture of a person and replicate every single muscle in some kind of jigsaw puzzle over a longer amount of time.
    I really enjoy your videos, tppo! And your passion and improvement is incredible. But I think that you're hindering yourself by only learning about stylized anatomy and trying to make every experiment aesthetically pleasing. A youtuber I'd recommend is Ethan Becker, he has some amazing videos on simplifying and understanding anatomy.

    • @JH-pe3ro
      @JH-pe3ro ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's essentially how I do it too. My studies are almost all based on blind contour now, when I go to draw something accurately I start in line of action and contour and only build enough construction on top to have a starting point or a bit of correction. Blind contour gets ignored in favor of gesture for some reason and I don't know why that is, because gesture is way more involved in terms of decision-making and harder to explain well.

    Tips to beginners, learning skeletons and muscles can actually help. There are books of anatomy for art out there that could help. It might be hard but you can learn more realistic poses and adapt to a lot of different styles of anatomy, but remember not to limit yourself. Don’t give up on a pose because it’s too hard or because you think it’s unrealistic and impossible for a human being to do because it is either possible or becomes one of these ghosts in horror movies and go ahead and challenge yourself. Try limit the number of guiding lines to improve your speed as you can just draw off by future. I am terrible at english

    I really love the analysis of these videos. A couple of crucial steps toward the beginning (that may not have been shown in the video) include perspective of things at or above eye level. Though a lot was done, most of it was at a downward view. Also! Drawing curves in perspective! Though a lot can be broken down into cubes, understanding how curves change can help soften the anatomy from being rigid.
    Your style breakdowns are really good, so the fundamentals become increasingly important.
    Good luck!

    Great video! I feel like this is a very much needed video on TH-cam for beginners trying to get comfortable with anatomy and breaking it down to manageable benchmarks.
    One thing I noticed about the box technique you used around 3:57 was that while it is a great method to use and test out, I noticed how the chair looked way more in exaggerated in perspective than the figure on it on the practice drawing. I realized why that was was because the boxes themselves for the figure were not oriented to the perspective lines as the chair, as the figure looked as if it was based on angle where the chair is level with the camera facing forward, as all the body portions were all well proportioned and even as if it was a character sheet rather than exaggerated to fit the angle used. (For example,from the top-down level angle used, the head would be way bigger and possibly show the top of the head with the lower portion body being smaller due to foreshortening perspective…etc etc) I’m excited to see your progress and journey with both anatomy and perspective and all of your other hard work!!

    Hello! One of the things that helped me learn anatomy is not drawing with squares or rectangles but with rounder shapes like ovals. This really helped my drawings look less stiff. Also another thing that helped me was the line of action. This can help make poses more dynamic by showing you where the spine is in the pose and can help you draw the proportions.

    Man, your video production is top notch.
    I see a lot of youtubers add rather bland stock video footage lately, and the way you add little touches like graphic text, the guitar sound when you mention the guitar and those little animation...that's so much more fitting for the type of content you make. It's so nice and makes the video so enjoyable.
    keep up the good work.
    I usually just look up poses for anatomy and try gesture drawing with a basic construction underneath.
    right now I am focusing on keeping the poses balanced and making it look like the characters have weight and gravity...I think once I master that skill to analyse the pose and depict little shifts in weight distribution it will level up my people drawing game. haha
    I think the biggest weakness I personally have is the bridge between realistic and stylisation...I struggle a little with the uncanny valley and having a clear direction in my art.
    that's why the art of some of the anime-influenced character illustrators is so fascinating to me I guess...they know how to make stylisation look cool and balanced, but the ones I like the most still have a feel of "realness" in their work...like you could touch the skin and it will feel like skin and not like plastic.

    You improved a lot! Personaly I recommend learning anatomy with realistic portraits, before doing anything stylized. Looking trough an anatomy book to get the basic on all the bones and muscle structures. There are also plenty of muscle 3d models on the internet, which helps a lot.

    I feel like something you capture well well that's really good to be telling people (that I see a lot of artists who ask about my work seem to get wrong) is the comparison between your work and your target. Studies are far more effective for growth when you remember you aren't just drawing the same thing over and over because you're grinding levels like a World Of Warcraft character; Rather, you should compare your work to what you are trying to achieve, note the differences, and try again with your faults in mind, through this you recognize and adjust your own understanding more than simply repeating what you've seen over and over.
    Brilliant video, would 100% recommend it to other artists as a fresh view on studies and artist growth

    The thing is the course guide us to practice in more simplified way, i too take both Chyan and Mogoon class i watched their video like parallel, one chyan anatomy and next mogoon coloring class because both these artists really have a great materials they teach to us and me personally, we can get good with this technique less than three months and even seven days if you really practicing a week straight and you proved it lol, it's not about how detailed and accurate it's about our understanding of the fundamentals. though still pay attention to your health and take a proper sleep 😅
    "A best artist is the one who survive"

    Great video production as always. I'd say, as someone who lacks anatomy knowledge, identifying the spine and sternum of the body helps immensely. How I work might be strange since I usually consume mass references while not drawing and use little while drawing, my anatomy turns out alright, not bad but not great. So I guess it's possible to improve by just looking at A LOT of good art, which is mostly how I got to this point. Such high consumption of art helps me identify errors through feelings, however I do not recommend doing this. I might be able to identify errors, but I don't always know how to fix it, it's faster to be consistently accurate instead of being inaccurate and try to fix it later, like me. So practicing and following the basics is still the way to go.

      didn’t want to say anything but since you’re a student as well, if you look hard enough you can find these courses somewhere. I’m don’t remember if it were these specific ones, but yeah. Consider going that route to test if the course will actually be beneficial to you before dropping tons of cash
