  • You know my sewing space. I have everything organized just where I need it. And occasionally, this room turns into a third bedroom. Well now I have two children that live out of province and in the past couple of months it’s switched to become a guest room that's occasionally a sewing room. It has seriously messed with my schedule. So in this video, it's my new studio tour. There's an Ikea Hack, a new sewing setup and hopefully I'll find my groove again.

My cutting table is my late mother's rectangular dining room table with all three leaves installed. I use 8 bed risers if the table is fully expanded, and 4 bed risers if all the leaves are removed. I count myself lucky that I can use my mother's table with all its memories as I work on my projects.

It’s a long story. I retired three years ago, moved south to warmer climate, purchased a small home…and last summer I purchased a new Pfaff Creative Icon sewing machine. I fell in obsessive love with this new hobby! But I have very limited space, of which I’ve gone totally overboard with this new love. But thanks to you and to this years’ challenge, I have totally revamped my sewing room! It’s a very small space that also shares my office desk and file cabinets. But I have reorganized it so my sewing cabinet, my cutting table, my thread cabinet and my fabric cabinets all fit in my little room. My living room no longer has to share space with my sewing room! I purchased a cutting table that has drop sides so it folds down to 12” and tucks up against the wall when I’m not cutting fabric. But I can also lift one side and put my wool pressing mat on it when I’m pressing. I installed pegboard on my wall above the cutting table and hung my rulers on it and got them off of the floor leaning against the wall. I cannot thank you enough for all of the inspiration you have given me to declutter and arrange my space so it is MUCH easier to thoroughly enjoy my favorite hobby! What a difference…I love my new home, my new hobby and my new sewing room! ❤❤❤

I love my Husky Tables. Best purchase I made for my sewing room. The versatility is wonderful. I love how you put them together by yourself! Bravo! I would recommend you use a portable ironing pad between you butcher block and your wool mat for added protection for your wood tabletop. I purchased a mat that you would use on top of a dryer. It is nonslip on the bottom and Teflon fabric on the top.

I’m so jealous that your space is large enough to accommodate all the great organizational things I so covet! Congrats and thanks for sharing. Just think how much fun the 2024 declutter is going to be with all those new cubby holes!! Helpful hint: don’t put something somewhere “for now “ only to pick it up and move it again later. This is called stuff shifting and is useless. Put it away the first time and voila! Future work and decisions are eliminated. Happy weekend all!!

Okay first of all, I hope you feel better soon! I have to tell you I love the pic of you under all the boxes LOL I can relate to that one! I can't believe you made one of those cutting storage tables!!! I absolutely love it and I am so glad you showed how to do it. My daughter and I are going to start shopping for a new home this year and we have decided to turn the living room into the sewing space and the loft into a living room. She has her Baby Lock and also an embroidery machine. I have my Juki and my Baby Lock Lyric. I also bought the Cutie quilting frame with the stitch regulator at Quilt Con last year and I decided I want a cutting table with storage like the one you just made here. I am going to have a lot to do....But I love the table and I hope you like your new sewing space!! I always love mine after I do the declutter challenge. I wake up forgetting that I decluttered and it looks completely different!! It is kind of a shock, but a good one!! Thanks Karen!!!

Love this video! My last sewing room was tiny and cluttered. It was our office/greenhouse during winter/sewing room and there was too much furniture to function. When we moved, I scored a giant loft for my sewing. I was then gifted a bar-height dining room table that has changed my sewing!! I'm so in love with my sewing studio, and I love yours too! Hopefully it fosters lots of creativity!

I have a similar cutting table. I used two book cases and the top is wood my Hubby already had. He cut it and put pretty trim on the edges. I stained the top to match the book cases. I also have the long edge overlap more on one side. I found two comfortable stools that slip underneath.

I'm fortunate to have a large sewing space available. I'm unfortunate to have a large sewing space available because I have an uncanny knack for filling up space with "stuff"! Cautionary tale for those of us who repurpose existing furniture. I have cherry dining table (used for staging) with 2 extensions that made for a perfect sewing surface. HOWEVER, a heavier sewing machine in the middle of a fully extended table, puts stress in the middle. I noticed that my table was bowing down. The weight of the machine had caused the screws to slowly be pulled out of the extension rail. Thank goodness I found it before it collapsed and tossed my machine (either on the floor or my lap). I fixed the issue by putting in mid support.

  • @FremdBands

I made a similar island last year and just love it. IKEA and Home Depot! A few suggestions to anyone thinking of this: I placed the two cabinets on separate pieces (HD melamine shelving so they were white like the cabinets). They clamp together, or will separate to fit out the door if I ever need to move to a different room. Also, added a top, removable layer of HD styrofoam insulation sheets (they come in multiple thicknesses and sizes and are easy to cut) covered that with ironing board fabric. Now I can pin into the top, iron on it, or lay out my cutting mats…such a functional island! Karen, I’ll look forward to your tips about managing two sewing spaces as you progress…you always find us such great ideas. Wishing you good health and grateful for all you share.

Your new set up is great! I'm a little biased though because mine is very similar. I DIY'd my big table out of the same Kallax units as you, but I got the long white laminate countertops (2) instead of the butcher block (too rich for me!), and I drilled the casters directly into the bottom of the Kallax units after attaching them with mending plates and L brackets. I love it so much!
Before I had a studio space that could accommodate such a large table, I bought one of those Husky tables! Then another, and then another. So I have all three sizes, and I use the biggest one for my ironing station.
I do still have a sewing set up at home, and I agree with your friends about the difficulty of moving projects around, as well as tools and supplies. I've gotten in the habit of doing all my cutting at the studio, and some tools I've purchased a duplicate set of to minimize frustration. Still figuring it all out (2 years later!), and it's not perfect, but it's much better than sewing out of my bedroom.
I hope you love your new space. It looks wonderful!

Your decluttering challenge encouraged me to spend 4 full days going through every item in my sewing space last week and getting rid of some, and moving others around so that my space works for me. After alot of trail and error I invested in a 52" Husky adjustable work bench a year ago for my Juki TL2000 machine. My back and neck has been so grateful for it. I purchased a 3 tiered rolling cart from Amazon. Each tier is about 6" wide and 15" long. It store perfectly under the right ledge of the work bench when not in use. When sewing it rolls next to my right side for quick access to my snips, clips, pins, etc. - Rhonda

Love your videos. I noticed you are putting your wool mat directly on the butcher block surface. FYI I did that on an end table and realized the heat and spray caused condensation that damaged the wood surface. You may want to add an old cutting mat under the wool mat to prevent any damage.

Be aware that humidity builds up in the wool pressing mats with a heavy pressing session. I damaged the oak top of a chest of drawers. Even with a heat reflective pressing sheet beneath. Ended up putting a new surface on top: towel to prevent slipping, giant bamboo cutting board, heat reflective mat (rubber backing so it doesn't slide on top of cutting board) then wool mat. No moisture gets past cutting board.
If I'd had a piece of scrap glass that would have been a bit thinner than the cutting board.

Your search for a comfortable, workable space is one I can identify with. I have spent so much money on sewing tables and all did not work.Just didn't feel right. I finally purchased a Husky table, on wheels, and can adjust to different heights, has 2 narrow drawers and this finally works for me. Taking your challenge, I began to rearrange my sewing room and I think for the 4 th time rearranged it: view to the yard, design board wall etc. I also purchased unfinished kitchen cabinets with drawers and an inexpensive counter top placed on top and all of this has worked for me. Being single, no help the opportunity to adjust, use a router etc isn't available for me. Thanks for the challenge but think I finally have it the way I want it. A feeling that works. Thanks for the ideas and the challenge! And gained a few more ideas for my space from your video.

I have reign of the basement for sewing and crafting. Many have asked why I don't use the spare room on the main level, my spare room is for grandchildren and children when they stay. Period. We got a trundle bed so the little boys have a nice place but when my son and his wife visit, it makes a lovely large bed!
    The mom/grandma struggle is real!

I don’t have the space to add storage and work space, but it was so nice to see that you were able to improve your sewing space and gain a guest bedroom all at once!! Happy quilting……..

Love this Karen! I’m doing something similar (and will have Hubs watch this to explain more of my goal) my SIL LOVES her Husky tables (at 6’2” it’s hard for her to find comfortable sizes) and NOOM! Loved this program!! Although now on a Dr regulated diet-I use what I learned from NOOM still daily 💕

You did an amazing job on your new sewing space. I love the idea of having a sewing table that I can raise and lower. I if it came as a bigger table that I could use as a cutting table.

My sister and brother in law thrifted cubbies similar to yours (no shelf backs, tho) and we mounted them on plywood with casters and used a whole sheet of plywood on the top. If I ever move, it will have to be taken apart. I love it.

Just purchased 3 huskey tables. Two for sewing tables and one for ironing. I did line the iron top with batting and that silver iron board material. And also lay a silicone pad down under my wool mat. Might be over kill but works great. You new improved area is looking great.

Did you know Container Store Our Deep Sweater boxes, or 2 Our Sweater boxes, our 1 Our Sweater and 2 Our Shoe boxes fit perfectly, exactly, in the squares of an Ikea Kellax! I have them everywhere! I use those as all my project and storage bins. Great video, I too have been researching my options for sewing table in my kitchen/living room and not finding things that check all my boxes.

I totally understand where you are coming from. As my sewing room also works as a spare bedroom. I just got myself a sewing cabinet so I have more storage and less packing away when company comes. I'm still trying to find where I was before Christmas.

I saw one of those Husky Height adjustable tables at Home Depot this last summer, I should have bought then. It was 6' x 25", I was concerned about my machine vibrating on it. I'll have to wait and see how you like it.

Love the Husky tables- I have two- my only regret is that both are the models with drawers- to use it as a sewing table, it needs to be at a lower setting which means it’s a bit tight for me my legs. I’m not a big person. The tables are heavy but move well on wheels and are very stable.

I WOULD LOVE to have a bedroom that converts to sewing room. I live 6months in RV do my kitchen gets converted. I have a tiny counter space to put my machine. I cover my 2 burner stove for a cutting ironing n layout area. I also have to dry my sink after washing n scrubbing it in case a piece of fabric lands there inadvertently. Did I mention I have to stand to sew? Or that my machine rides and lives in the "garage" (my car) and I fight my Hubcap for a space for fabric that always ends up with tools or BBQ grill. But I persevere. At home I am converting a work shop into a she shed for a studio when I retire. I'm a truck driver over the road so rarely get home to work on projects. But I do bring a hand sewing project with me in the road.
