Hello James, It is a very nice design. You showed the details great. A flashy bookmark. Congratulations. Thank you for sharing this inspirational and motivating content. See you. greetings. Stay healthy and happy.
Spent more time on the jigs than the bookmarks but that's half the fun as a hobbyist isn't it ;) Now I have them I could batch out a few dozen and give them to a market stall enthusiast on consignment... 😉
Cheers mate! Just found your channel. Stair builder hey? Welcome to the tubes, there is a great community here, you'll find a ton of locals in the hashtag playlist... Some blow ins too 😋
@@FixitFingers cheers James!! Yeah mate correct, former stair builder 😊 oh nice, I'm diving into the playlist now & am stoked to have stumbled across this community! Genuinely upset its taken me so long to get here 😭 legend mate, will be watching all your stuff with a keen eye from here. Cheers. Sam
I soooo glad I've seen you use socks for buffing, I thought it was only me who did that! 🤣🤣 So much work went into producing them, and they came out great, that resin one looked great, and the colour really added to it 👍
Why buy rags when you got old shirts and socks 😂 Considering the resin and leather were afterthoughts when I questioned the stability of the original intention I am super happy I did them. 'River' bookmarks might even be a thing next ;)
Wow, nice one James. Lots of small jigs over here. Liked that thin strip cutting custom jig. Nice and repeatable. Looking fwd to the drill sander contraption thingy video as well 😁👍
Awesome jig making going on here, very inspirational. Your drum sander (yeah i guessed it on your IG post !!) is awesome, I really need one. I might go for a big one as I hate sanding, and a dig drum sander practically does it for you. This is a very creative project, well done.
Lots of great full sized DIY sanders on TH-cam to try ideas from! ...I've watched none of them obviously 😂 Video on mine is in the queue, will be out on Friday 👌
Not usually! This one was kinda filmed in the middle of the bookmark project so was a cheeky bonus video 😂 I've just upgraded my VO microphone so I'm glad the sound quality has improved. I know there are folks who take English speaking videos and redo the VO in Spanish, Hindi, etc... Maybe I could offer a reverse service 😅
loving the dodgy sander man! great way to stretch the brain muscles to figure that one out XD. beautiful bookmarks too, I've never seen Jarrah wood before. looks great!
I'd never handled jarrah before either! It is endemic to the west coast so we don't see a lot of of in Sydney...it's basically an exotic 😂 Beautiful colour to it.
Really nicely executed with patience & dexterity James, man that’d get the better of me such wafer thin strips 😮🙃. Voiceover a nice touch mate & thanks to Mark for the challenge 🍻👍👍👍
Trying to channel my inner Pask Makes 😉 I wanted to try something very different for this build after a series of workshop projects. Cheers for watching all the way as usual, yes I'm pretty happy with the new microphone 🎤 😃
Cheers Gerrit! The spray adhesive failed after a day but I might make a more permanent Version 2 using what I learnt as it is a handy machine to have around :D
Awesome work James, I really liked the jig you put together to get consistent cuts. Thanks for the shout out, it looks like you beveled correctly to me, lol!
Wow mate! This was a fantastic video! From that awesome cutting jig(with dust collection! ☺️) to all the other amazing jigs you used and finally to the actual bookmarks! Great job and I love how sensible and careful you are with everything! I'm just winging it, pretty much all the time! 😅😅 Subscribed and waiting for more content! 👍👍
Hahahaha I'm glad I looked careful as I was completely making it up as I go. My only idea when I started was "Bookmarks" and somehow using those veneer pieces to do it. Even the drum sander was a spur of the moment decision when I realised I didn't want to use the normal sander after the glue had dried 😅 Speaking of which, that video should be out soon ;) Cheers for jumping on!
Great video James! I thought those jigs were genius! Well designed and efficient in use! I have used veneer as thin as postcard to make into bookmarks but it has to be said that any thicker than that and the wood has to be curved front and back on the long edges otherwise there will be two parallel lines on the page, especially if the book is jammed tight in the bookshelf or if the book is in a pile of heavy books. I have technical books which have cost maybe £50 and I would be shocked if I had impression damage or the wax impacted in hot weather. The leather beveller and the hard burnishing would seem to solve those problems. Great idea for the project challenge James - now what to create with rubbish sawdust! :)
Some interesting thoughts there my friend. I steered away from an oil finish for just that reason, to protect the pages, fortunately for rate at which my mother and sister read they shouldn't stay still for long but I shall warn them of the perils of tardy page turning rates particularly in warm weather! They are a little thick, 2.5 mm they ended up in the middle, but a little thinner around the edges so perhaps by accident I have stumbled on the parabolic curve required due to the eccentricity of my bodgy sander 😅
very creative there young James! very jigsy! and it reminded me of this kangaroo burger that I had once (in Auckland .. so really kangaroo?? 🤔) which tasted like that leather 🤣
Bloody beautiful! Good luck Buddy 🤗 And DnD! 😱🥰 if you are in Melbourne, I would love to come over and play a campaign you run some time after lockdown 😅
Hahahaha, Sydney based, though one of my players is in Melbourne. A group of my old high school mates started playing during the big nationwide lock down last year. About halfway through Storm Kings Thunder at the moment. The bookmarks were going to be for my DnD books but I've decided to give them away instead (as really I need many little labelled ones for the books :P)
That drum sander has some potential. I'm envisioning the addition of two planer blades, and a drill set to a much higher RPM. Then the drum sander can be renamed to spinny death machine. OK OK....I have problems 😇
James, this was interesting in many ways. First off, I like how you explained the difference between scrap wood and rubbish wood. That homemade drum sander was amazing...you should copyright that! All the finnicky, little details that went into those bookmarks show patience, creativity, determination and I could go on and on patting you on the back! So suitable for the dremel too! I am glad you gave them to 3 special ladies! I'm curious, don't you want a tablesaw?
Want? Sure! Need? Not particularly. Fit in my worship? A struggle 😋. I do have one (in the same vein that I have a drum sander 😅) but I think I've used it 3 times. Working towards finding a home where one could live then will need to either DIY version 2 of my prototype one or consult the minister of war and finance 😉
I'm not to sure that rubbing Carbonara into bookmarks is a good idea! 😆😆 bwahahahahaha 😆😆 crack me up... Very nicely done, mate, they look fantastic, and I'm betting they are well received.👍🏽
I believe it was an accurate description of those quality few quiet minutes I spent under the glow of the gentle workshop lighting... I even had the garage door wide open to share it with the world. 🌏
These are great. That little bit of resin really made a huge difference too. I hope the ladies are happy.
Wifey is having a hard time choosing which one she wants so I can pass on the other two 😊
Cool build, the journey to the end product was so good.
It was a journey, but a fun one (if somewhat impractical) 😅 Thanks Harki 👍

Thank you Mehmet. I see you've entered your clever jar storage from a few weeks ago, a most excellent choice, I enjoyed that build a lot.
@@FixitFingers Thank you too. The rotating jar organizer works very well for me. I am happy you like it. 'll see. Best regards.

What a brilliant project James, so many lovely little details 🛠👍😊
Good fun and good practice. Never did use that sander jig again but it was a nice prototype
This is an amazing project! I enjoyed it a lot! Especially the jigs you built. And the ghetto drum sander! Wow! Genius! Plus the use of epoxy!
Cheers Vipun, yep it had a little bit of everything this one! Small projects are often more complicated I find 😅
Clever use of rubbish wood. We like how the bookmarks turned out!
I'll be hosting the next maker challenge at the start of July. I expect a PMDIY entry this time :D
They came out great, and an awesome video as well!
G'day Luke. A bit different for me this one, it was good fun. Cheers 🍻

Another great video. And plus 1 to loving the dodgy drum sander. Great project & great result.

Honestly can't believe it worked 😅 There will be a version 2 with more refinement, but it got the job done!
Wow, nice one James. Lots of small jigs over here. Liked that thin strip cutting custom jig. Nice and repeatable. Looking fwd to the drill sander contraption thingy video as well 😁👍
I think how far you are from your comfort zone is directly proportional to how many new jigs you need to get the job done 😁
Awesome project!! I loved the worlds most dodgey drum sander. I thought I owned that model, but you have taken the prize. Great voiceover audio :)
Yours is down right professional in comparison 😂 Got the job done! I like that new microphone, only about $30 on Amazon, bargain. 🎤
Mate that was awesome!! That drum sander was next level and the bookmarks turned out shmicko!
Nice to make something not for the workshop... That involved making at least two things specifically for the workshop 🤔
@@FixitFingers hahah sounds about right!

Judging by your new router sled you'll be able to make a much better version of the sander 😉
Nice one mate. Love the drum sander! I’m about to delve into some leather work myself!
It's a fun material. I got wifey a set of basic tools and she's starting to play. Nice and quiet compared to woodwork 😉
Slick jig @3:50 mark. Very clever!
Cheers mate. I have great fun making those. Best way to compensate for lack of skill ;)

Nice one! Those look great!
I like them. Probably the least efficient way to make them (and the video of the dodgy jig is doing 5x better 🤣) but I like them.
Awesome work James, I really liked the jig you put together to get consistent cuts. Thanks for the shout out, it looks like you beveled correctly to me, lol!
I feel like that was a V groove cutter, it was hard to keep the depth consistent. Are they different tools or you just need to be careful?
@@FixitFingers there are different tools. A v groove cutter will work in a pinch, but it works much better at cutting grooves than beveling edges. 🤣
Argh. Well either I need to look harder through her tools or to take a trip to the leather shop 😅 That was definitely a V thingy.
