Great video mate. I love my laser, it’s so great for templates, Engravings cool too. I never thought I would use mine as much as I do, but it now does something on most builds. Also it’s great to see you back in the workshop.
@@fathogwoodworking cheers Ross. A bit spoilt starting at the higher end of the market but I'm glad I waited for the tech to get to this point. Much less stuffing around!
@@FixitFingers definitely worth waiting. The only issue I have with mine is that 12 months on from purchase, I’ve outgrown it. I need a 40w one now so that’s another tool on the upgrade list.
Thanks Vipun, it was a bit of a learning curve but a really fun project to work on. Used a number of different techniques for the thing and let me dial in some settings. I dare say the laser will get used in some way on most projects going forward.
Nice job James. This is what I really enjoy about lasering engraving, is that you can come up with something and have the laser cut it all out, whilst you get on with other stuff. Is definitely a tool, and not a you 👍🍻🍺
I should have added you to the laser list of folks I've watched make the laser leap! While I have no etsy product desires, I'll likely release all the things I do make for free as SVGs on the website. Looks good mate! Love the filter! That would’ve been handy for me before I cut a hole in my garage door to run a 2 inch extraction hose out of. People walking passed think I’m up to something shifty in there now 😂
I'm still going to duct it to that broken fan... but at least I got to test it in the worst case scenario so know it does the job. The real test will be how long does it last before an expensive filter change? :)
A 40w as your first laser, is like getting keys to a Ferrari when you've just turned 18. The stuff you'll discover, and the problems it will solve in the workshop, you'll love it. Everything you said was %100, it's a tool and what tool it can be. 👏
I owe a couple more videos to xTool which will focus on the machine, then it will fade into the background like the tablesaw or Barbar's Trimmer ;) This is certainly not an entry level unit, but it is the unit I've always wanted. Much like my sawstop, it was worth the wait!
Great review interesting about the smoke and the toxins released. Honestly I wouldn't have given it a second thought. Will defo keep a lookout for an equivalent model this side. Great looking project.
@@jamesmullen287 I haven't tried the special 'laser ply' options yet, they are much better apparently. But as usual it's the stuff you can't see that is the worst (and the hardest to filter) which is why venting outside is always the best idea. Still, I think the filter does a great job
That's the plan! Templates for those nice curve transitions, router joinery, marquetry, and even some of the intricate carving that I can now cheat on ;) Plus, I want to experiemnt with some deep char relief carving. Gonna be fun.

Well hopefully she has as much fun playing with it as I had making it 😅 The laser actually lends itself pretty well to kids projects, she'll likely be getting a few things made for her 😊
I agree that XCS is great, plus it’s free to use, but it does have its limitations and the more experienced one gets over time, they almost all switch over to LightBurn and never look back. My only gripe when I used XCS was the estimated processing times displayed. My 10w module always took around 2x as long to process than what was displayed and my 1064nm IR module was typically finished in about 25% of the time estimated. I mean, that number is calculated by speed, distance and number of repetitions, all of which are parameters the user sets in XCS. In the grand scheme of things, it’s fairly simple math. Something Asians are typically good at. So I’m not sure why they can’t seem to get it right. A few minutes one way or another would be acceptable but estimating 38 minutes and it only takes 9 leaves me bewildered how it’s that far off.
@@RefillableBicLighters that is weird. I've only got the one module for now and it's been bang on... Or at least it's counted down to zero...you know, I never actually timed it. Feels like the estimate times were good but you've got me curious now, I'll have to run a clock vs the next job!
