Pete.. Given the weird history of The Hudson Valley it would be cool to have a Halloween Hudson Valley Squares where we hear your own tales of the strange. Tales that have either happened to you yourselves, friends and family or those you grew up with?
My top 30 or so King adaptations: The Shining (1980) The Shawshank Redemption (1994) The Dead Zone (1983) Creepshow (1982) Sometimes They Come Back (1991) The Running Man (1987) Christine (1983) Cujo (1983) Graveyard Shift (1990) 1408 (2007) Pet Sematary (1989) The Dark Half (1993) 'Salem's Lot (1979) Misery (1990) The Lawnmower Man (1992) Creepshow 2 (1987) Maximum Overdrive (1986) Silver Bullet (1985) Cat's Eye (1985) Children Of The Corn (1984) Secret Window (2004) It (1990) Thinner (1996) Dolan's Cadillac (2009) The Langoliers (1995) The Green Mile (1999) The Stand (1994) The Tommyknocker (1993) The Mangler (1995) Dolores Claiborne (1995) Apt Pupil (1998) Needful Things (1993) Desperation (2006)
Hands down, Stand By Me. Perfect circumstances of coming out while my friends and I were that age. Coincidently all lived near train tracks so there was that odd connection. Love it to this day.
HORROR/PSYCHOLOGICAL: - The Shining (1980) is an absolute classic, despite the fact that King disowned it. - Misery (1990) terrified me and I thought Kathy Bates’ acting was superb. - It (1990/2017) are great - Secret Window (2004) was a good film yet very underrated NON-HORROR: - The Shawshank Redemption (1994) was a great film saw it for the first time back in February on TV.
Welcome back Rich. Here are my top 5 subject to change. I admit I have not seen everything from King. 1. The Shining 2. Shawshank Redemption 3. Carrie 4. Creepshow 5. The Langoliers- I enjoyed the miniseries HM The Tommyknockers, Salems Lot
Really hard, there are a lot I really like but I have to go with the classics: 1) The Shawshank Redemption 2) Carrie 3) The Shining 4) Dead Zone 5) Needful Things Of course Misery is great, too. And the recent IT movies deserve an honorable mention as well.
Revival is a great recent King book…very good cosmic horror material. My favorite film adaptations: Misery, Stand By Me, Shawshank, The Green Mile, Carrie, The Dead Zone, The Shining, and “camp” factor notwithstanding, Salem’s Lot. Dolores Claiborne is pretty good, as is the recent adaptation of Gerald’s Game with Carla Gugino.
Nice video, interesting thoughts. Been reading King since '76, he's definitely amongst my favorite authors. He rarely gets translated onto film correctly, imho....but to each his own My top 5 (...😉 today, at least 😊 ) 5- The Dead Zone 4- Doctor Sleep 3- Misery 2- Creepshow 1- Kubricks The Shining
Agree about Delores Claiborne. An excellent story with fantastic acting/performances; always one of my top favorites, but it seems to get overlooked by many. Excellent cinematography with so much mood and atmosphere; notice the grey and overcast shots (which represent the present), contrasted with the brighter colors and hues (representative of the past.) So fascinating.
he's got sooooo many... hard to pick just 5... my favorites in order... and I am reviewing the movie, not the book... #1 The Shawshank Redemption (so much better than the book, probably the best book adaptation I have ever seen - easily in my top 5 favorite films of all time - acting is perfect, casting was perfect, cinematography was perfect, directing was perfect easily Stephen King and Frank Darabont and Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman's greatest work in their entire career and all 4 of them are on the Mt. Rushmore of their fields), #2 Stand By Me (again, amazing direction by Rob Reiner - great acting by all the kids: Cusack, Feldman, Phoenix, Sutherland, Wheaton, O'Connell, Siemaszko, etc. - great use of music, great narration by Richard Dreyfuss), #3 11.22.63 (with James Franco - my favorite Stephen King miniseries - amazing creative story and historical fiction), #4 The Dead Zone (1983 movie with Christopher Walken - Walken and Martin Sheen were both amazing), #5 The Running Man (great adaptation and Richard Dawson was amazing in it. Fun action movie - my only gripe was the directing by Paul Michael Glaser was a little too campy. this movie would have been 100 times better if Paul Verhoeven directed and put the spin on it he had in Robocop, Starship Troopers (and to a lesser extent Total Recall) and made it a dystopian dark comedy or if it had come out a few years later in Arnold Schwarzenegger's career and they had the big budget of a Terminator 2 or a True Lies to make it have better effect or if John Carpenter (Escape From New York, They Live) had directed it instead - it was kind of stuck in the middle of a big budget and small budget and PG-13 and an R - would have been better with a hard R). honorarble mention: The Green Mile (I hate to be one of those "the book was better" people but it was - I wish they had made it a 4 hour movie or even better, a six hour long episode HBO / Showtime / Netflix mini series [the original book was in 6 mini books] and included the character Brad Dolan - the malicious nursing home employee who harasses Paul Edgecombe and is very similar to Percy - I watch more than I read and maybe I feel this way because this was a rare case where I read the books first as they came out otherwise it would be higher on the list - again great work by Frank Darabont and great casting and acting - especially Michael Clarke Duncan - I have seen this movie 10 times and I cry every single time I watch this movie ).
Had the opportunity to actually meet Stephen King at a Gary Hart, remember him?, rally in New Hampshire in 1984. He was announced as a speaker, so I took my paperback copy of Firestarter, and a good pen, and went to the rally. And there he was! So I edged over to where he was standing and introduced myself and asked him to autograph my book. And he did! I was actually shaking as I walked away. It is still one of my most prized possessions that I show to selected guests.
When it comes to Stephen King adaptations, I kinda lean towards the miniseries more. Here are a few of my personal favorites: The Stand(1994) The Shining (both 1980 & 1997) Rose Red(2002) Carrie(1976) Christine (1983) Salem's Lot(1979) Storm Of The Century (1999) IT(both 1990 & 2017) Btw: Pete Pardo, I really enjoy your content. Even if we disagree on some points, I really appreciate your insights as well as the rest of the Hudson Valley crew.
Frank Darabont, who directed "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Mist" and "The Green Mile", was in charge of "The Walking Dead" the first year and a half before he was fired.
1. Maximum Overdrive (HA!) 2. Christine 3. Salem’s Lot 4. Dead Zone 5. Carrie HM: Creepshow The “Shinning” (sshh! You wanna get sued?!) The Mist (awesome) Silver Bullet
My favorite King films are, The Shining, Christine, Maximum Overdrive, Creep Show and Carrie. The Hills Have Eyes remake came out in 2006, not the early 90s. I like many films that were adapted from Stephen King works, but my top favorites are generally the ones that aren't exactly horror; I come back to these the most: 1. The Shawshank Redemption (Probably my favorite film of all, or just about close to it.) 2. The Shining 3. Stand by Me (Might be some nostalgic reasons for this ranking.) 4. Delores Claiborne 5. The Green Mile I also like Misery. I watched stuff like Children of the Corn, The Lawnmower Man, It, Pet Sematary, and such back then, but not so much these days.
Speaking of the shining I met with my friend at the grand lakes hotel in Orlando. The place was so big I said wouldn’t it be cool if we had big kid big wheels and could ride around the hotel😀
1. The Shining 2. Stand By Me 3. Pet Sematary 4. Silver Bullet 5. Cujo honorable mentions: Christine The Running Man IT Salems Lot Children Of The Corn etc etc
Hey Pete, when you say the 90's weren't so good for the great man, don't forget Desperation, The Green Mile, Needful Things, The Wastelands, Bag of Bones, Hearts In Atlantis, Wizard and Glass, Insomnia, Nightmares and Dreamscapes. Not to mention the uncut release of The Stand. It was a good decade.
1) The Shining (1980) 2) Misery (1990) 3) The Shawshank Redemption (1994) 4) The Dead Zone (1983) 5) Carrie (1976) Guilty pleasure picks: 1) Maximum Overdrive (1986) 2) Sleepwalkers (1992)
Gonna go top 10 so many good ones 01 The Shining 02 Shawshank Redemption 03 Carrie 04 Misery 05 Green Mile 06 Stand By Me 07 The Mist 08 Dolores Claiborne 09 The Stand 10 It
Shining, Delores Claiborne, Christine, Firestarter. There's so many. The 1st book I ever read? Night Shift by Stephen King. I was about 9 or 10, I found it upstairs at my grandparents. So much of his work has been made into movies. The story Jerusalem's Lot which opens this book of short stories, which I felt would make the best movie, has finally come to fruition.
We got drenched in Pittsburgh. My friend's roof is now missing shingles and leaking. Anyway... 1) Carrie 2) Stand By Me 3) The Shining 4) Silver Bullet 5) Christine
let’s play the Stephen King movie drinking game! …take a shot when 1) it is in Maine 2) he hates on religion 3) telekinesis…two shots if it’s a child 4) a character has a dumb name, like Randall Flagg or Tommyknockers 5) if a character has abusive parents 6) if someone is an alcoholic 7) if the military is stupid
Top 5 1) IT (The miniseries) 2) IT (The Movies) 3) Pet Sematary(The original) 4) The Shining(Kubricks and the reboot were both good) 5) Carrie I am very biased with IT. The book, the miniseries, and the movies were great. I prefer the book. I first tackled that behemoth of a paper back when I was 12 or 13 and have read IT every year since. The miniseries is a timeless classic and that ensemble cast are who I picture when I read the book. To top it off Tim Curry as every ones favorite clown. The reboot movies were done very well and have no issue with the casting, the production, or other parts except for the ritual of CHUD part. They could of done it closer to the source material.
Wonderful surprise to have Rich back on SoT. Welcome back, Rich. You’ve been missed. Stephen King was a favorite author for me when he started. And the closing minutes of Carrie made me literally jump out of my seat at the movie. Haven’t kept up with all his writings and movies but the lust today would be. 1. The Shawshank Redemption. This is one of those rare movies for me that if I come across it channel surfing, have to stop and watch the movie no matter where I come in to the film. A great adaptation and one of my favorite movies overall. Great casting, excellent story and holds my attention since the first time seeing it. 2. Carrie - the original film. What a cast and only the second movie to make me literally jump up in fright. Unforgettable. 3. The Shining. Actually liked the book better than the film but Nicholson is just so great in this film. 4. The Dead Zone. Couldn’t put the book down and bought it as soon as it was printed. Great story made into an equally riveting movie. 5. A Pardo Mulligan with The Green Mile and Stand By Me. The first for the great story and cast and how it ends. The second because you knew the kid - River Phoenix- was going to be a great actor just from this role. Pity he died so you g. Thanks, gents, for a highly enjoyable Episode.
I love Stand by Me! They didn’t mention it in the video, did they? That surprised me. Or maybe they didn’t consider it a Stephen King Adaptation since it was published under his pseudonym Richard Bachman, same as The Running Man, which I always liked.
I dont know how we knew about it, but when i was like 13 or 14, me and my friends would always say "Thanks for the ride, lady!" I never saw Creepshow, and i dont remember anyone every mentioning thats where it was from.....but we used it for my entire time in junior and senior high school. To finally find out where it was from was crazy....i had to text my best friend to tell him.
In my opinion....the best adaptation from a short story to a film....a film that actually bombed at the box office but gained popularity over time...The Shawshank Redemption!!!
Bill Skaarsgard plays the evil clown in the IT remake and was also in season 1 of Castle Rock as well as the Hemlock Grove series. Talented family the Skarsgards.
I really enjoyed the original Salem's Lot. It seems dated now but when it came out it was great. My top 5 are rounded out with Carrie, The Mist, The Shining, and Misery.
#1 Salem's Lot #2 Christine #3 Pet Cemetery #4 The Mist #5 It (First Remake) #6 Creepshow #7 The Green Mile #8 Silver Bullet #9 Stand by me #10 The Shining Honorable Mention... Riding The Bullet 👹👹👹👹👹👹👹
hey guys, so the olds!, lol. its not Amy Irving who I was thinking of from Carrie that was the same actor with the dark curly hair in Halloween, that is Nancy Keys who played Annie.
"Priscilla Pointer who plays Amy Irving's mother in the movie is actually her real mother and her mom played on Dallas as the mother of Cliff Barnes and Pam Ewing."
I liked the "Rose Red" miniseries. Another one I like is not one that gets a lot of mention. It was part of the "Nightmares & Dreamscapes" collection, called "The End of the Whole Mess". It was adapted for television and starred Ron Livingston and Henry Thomas. It's not very long (probably an hour with commercials) but it's good. Not as good as the version in the book of course.
Top 5 SK horror adaptations 5. Mr. Mercedes (2017-2019) 4. Cujo (1983) 3. 'Salem's Lot (1979) 2. The Stand (1994) 1. The Shining (1980) Top 5 SK Drama/Thriller adaptations 5. The Dead Zone (1983) 4. Apt Pupil (1998) 3. Stand By Me (1986) 2. Misery (1990) 1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Amy Irving is the actress with the dark curly hair. Her character is Sue Snell who asked her boyfriend, Tommy Ross, to take Carrie to the prom. They are the saving grace, along with the PE teacher, for Carrie. Too bad that evil had to prevail.
Absolutely my favorite Stephen king adaption is the stand however I love desperation also but my top 5 are 1 the stand 2 desperation 3 the shining 4 Carrie 5 it
Amicus made 10 horror anthology movies from 1964 to 1981, all of which were CLASSIC horror anthologies. Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965) Torture Garden (1967) The House That Dripped Blood (1971) Asylum (1972) Tales From The Crypt (1972) The Vault of Horror (1973) Tales That Witness Madness (1973) From Beyond The Grave (1974) The Uncanny (1977) The Monster Club (1981)
Thank you Pete!! Great idea ; Rerelease the originals in the theater!! And I totally agree!!!; Why remake a film that the original is less than 20 years old!!?? I’ve had the same thought many times!
I love Carrie, Misery, Shawshank but The Shining is pure cinema and clearly my number 1. The Running Man is also based on King's book, and is really entertaining Arnold actioner.
Even though it’s not a Thriller or Horror I still think Stand By Me is a brilliant film from a Stephen King Story, about adolescence and loss of innocence ( it is a story about kid’s wanting to join in the hunt for a dead body and claim the reward for finding it ) so it still has slightly dark themes in it 👍🏻
There was a short story about a serial killer, the man who loved flowers, I think that’s what it was called, it was in one of his earlier books. But he never made a movie about it, that would’ve been interesting. Anyway, love you guy they take on Stephen King films. See you later.
1. The Shining (1980) 2. Carrie (1976) 3. The Dead Zone 4. Creepshow 5.Salem's Lot The first three,c'mon,Kubrik,De Palma and Cronenberg! What else needs to be said?
My favourite film version of a King novel is "The Dead Zone." It stayed close to the book, it starred Christopher Walken, who I'm a big fan of, and it was filmed right here in the area where I live. Second and third picks would be "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile." I really enjoyed the miniseries of "11/22/63," which I guess was a bit like the Dead Zone in some ways, in that the main character foresaw something awful that was going to happen, and tried to prevent it. I also really liked "The Mist," despite the bleak ending, and "Carrie" was an excellent film. I thought the film of "Firestarter" was quite good myself. "The Shining" is an excellent film, but halfway through it becomes Kubrick's story and not King's, and I can see why he disowned it. "Christine" was also very good, but again it veered away from the original concept of the story. The first King book I read was "Salem's Lot," and when the film came out I didn't like it. Maybe I should give that one a second chance. "The Stand" is my favourite King book, and I thought the original miniseries was very well done, even though they had to leave out about 2/3 of the book to make it. I didn't like the "Pet Sematary" film. I thought it was corny. I really liked the original story "Trucks" that Maximum Overdrive was based on. My son loves that movie, and it's entertaining, but it's nothing like the original story in a lot of ways. King has said he was high on coke the entire time he directed it. "Night Flier" is another of his short stories I really enjoy. I have the film but haven't watched it. He's written so many great books and stories, there are bound to be great ones and clunkers. I just want to totally agree with what you said, Pete, about The Mist. We are going through the same thing here in Canada, with all these selfish people who won't do what they need to do for the greater good, and honestly, it pisses me right off. Their arguments are ridiculous, as far as I'm concerned. Just one more thing, that came into my head when you were talking about Kathy Bates. Have you ever seen "About Schmidt?" It stars Nicholson, in one of his best performances, and also Kathy Bates, (and here's one for Chris Alo), who gets totally naked in it!
Salem’s Lot creeped the hell out of me as a kid. Probably the scariest made - forTV movie ever? James Mason was a tremendous actor.
Rich, it’s great to see you back!
Pete.. Given the weird history of The Hudson Valley it would be cool to have a Halloween Hudson Valley Squares where we hear your own tales of the strange. Tales that have either happened to you yourselves, friends and family or those you grew up with?

Loved the show! Great to see Silver Bullet get a mention. I have a soft spot for Firestarter - superb book, ok film, would love to see a remake.
Delores Claiborne was very good indeed
We got drenched in Pittsburgh. My friend's roof is now missing shingles and leaking. Anyway...
1) Carrie
2) Stand By Me
3) The Shining
4) Silver Bullet
5) Christine
let’s play the Stephen King movie drinking game!
…take a shot when
1) it is in Maine
2) he hates on religion
3) telekinesis…two shots if it’s a child
4) a character has a dumb name, like Randall Flagg or Tommyknockers
5) if a character has abusive parents
6) if someone is an alcoholic
7) if the military is stupid
We'd be dead from cirrhosis of the liver before the game was over....lol
Top 5
1) IT (The miniseries)
2) IT (The Movies)
3) Pet Sematary(The original)
4) The Shining(Kubricks and the reboot were both good)
5) Carrie
I am very biased with IT.
1. The Shining
2. Christine
3. Stephen King's IT! (1990)
4. The Shawshank Redemption
5. The Green Mile
1. The Shining
2. The Dead Zone

5. 1408
Top 5 in no particular order:
- The Shining
- Doctor Sleep
- Storm of the Century (it always seems to be overlooked!)
- The Mist
- Carrie
Amy Irving wasn't in Halloween- but P.J. Soles was and she is also in "Carrie"....
And Rockn'Roll High School I think.
Mine: The Langoliers, Carrie, Shawshank, The Shining, Maximum Overdrive
HM: The Mist No doubt where Frank Darabont got his themes.
Dead Zone, Misery, Green Mile, Christine, Apt Pupil.
I love, love, love The Running Man, not even close to the story but the movie was great.
Carrie (1976).
The Shining (1980).
Salem's Lot (1979).
The Shawshank Redemption (1994).
Silver Bullet (1985).
1408 is probably my favorite. Super underrated film.
Big fan of both Creepshows, I love that one with The Indian.
I've never actually seen Dead Zone. May have to search that one out
In my opinion....the best adaptation from a short story to a film....a film that actually bombed at the box office but gained popularity over time...The Shawshank Redemption!!!
The Dead Zone, The Mist, Shawshank Redemption, It, and Doctor Sleep
1. The Shining (1997)
2. Storm of the Century
3. Salem's Lot (1979)
4. The Stand (1994)
5. It (1990)
Bill Skaarsgard plays the evil clown in the IT remake and was also in season 1 of Castle Rock as well as the Hemlock Grove series. Talented family the Skarsgards.
I really enjoyed the original Salem's Lot. It seems dated now but when it came out it was great. My top 5 are rounded out with Carrie, The Mist, The Shining, and Misery.
The Dead Zone is probAbly my number one adaption. I wish someone had the imagination & skill to tackle The Stand and do it justice
#1 Salem's Lot
#2 Christine
#3 Pet Cemetery
#4 The Mist
#5 It (First Remake)
#6 Creepshow
#7 The Green Mile

👹👹👹👹👹👹👹
...And "Christine",of course!!!! And "Shawshank Redemption"!!!!
hey guys, so the olds!, lol. its not Amy Irving who I was thinking of from Carrie that was the same actor with the dark curly hair in Halloween, that is Nancy Keys who played Annie.
"Priscilla Pointer who plays Amy Irving's mother in the movie
is actually her real mother and her mom played on Dallas as
the mother of Cliff Barnes and Pam Ewing."
Silver bullet, the Shining, it, Christine (John Carpenter), pet cemetary, Night shift, misery.
5. Carrie
4. The Dead Zone
3. The Shining
2. 1408
1. The Shawshank Redemption

Great to have Rich Catino back! This was a great episode!
I am a fan of The Shining. And I thought Stand By Me was fantastic (although not a horror film).

Amy Irving is the actress with the dark curly hair. Her character is Sue Snell who asked her boyfriend, Tommy Ross, to take Carrie to the prom. They are the saving grace, along with the PE teacher, for Carrie. Too bad that evil had to prevail.
Absolutely my favorite Stephen king adaption is the stand however I love desperation also but my top 5 are 1 the stand 2 desperation 3 the shining 4 Carrie 5 it
1. Salem’s Lot miniseries
2. Misery

Good to have you back, Rich!
Stand By Me (The Body) and Apt Pupil are two I think are terrific-though maybe not in the category intended.
I'm a car guy..So its Christine
Thank you Pete!! Great idea ; Rerelease the originals in the theater!! And I totally agree!!!; Why remake a film that the original is less than 20 years old!!?? I’ve had the same thought many times!
My favorite Stephen King Adaptations
Storm of The Century
Rose Red
Apt Pupil
Tommyknockers
Salem's Lot
I love Carrie, Misery, Shawshank but The Shining is pure cinema and clearly my number 1. The Running Man is also based on King's book, and is really entertaining Arnold actioner.
Even though it’s not a Thriller or Horror I still think Stand By Me is a brilliant film from a Stephen King Story, about adolescence and loss of innocence ( it is a story about kid’s wanting to join in the hunt for a dead body and claim the reward for finding it ) so it still has slightly dark themes in it 👍🏻
1. Misery
2. The Shawshank Redemption
3. The Shining
4. The Dead Zone
5. Christine
There was a short story about a serial killer, the man who loved flowers, I think that’s what it was called, it was in one of his earlier books. But he never made a movie about it, that would’ve been interesting. Anyway, love you guy they take on Stephen King films. See you later.
1. Shawshank
2. Misery
3. Stand by me.
1. The Shining (1980)
2. Carrie (1976)
3. The Dead Zone
4. Creepshow
5.Salem's Lot
The first three,c'mon,Kubrik,De Palma and Cronenberg! What else needs to be said?
'The Green Mile' sticks closest to the book and is all the better because of it (IMO)
Shawshank
Green Mile
The Mist
It parts 1 and 2
Doctor Sleep
HM: Misery
the Dark Half is sort of a slasher
I really love Storm Of The Century mini series
Carrie, Dead zone, shining, stand by me, shawshank, misery, doctor sleep, can’t rank
There was also a made for tv version of The Shining that followed the book to a tee.
Welcome back Rich!
The Shining
Carrie
The Shawshank Redemption
The Dead Zone
Creepshow
Honorable mentions: It, The Dark Half, Christine and Thinner
