Hey guys just wanted to let u know how entertaining these ranking videos have been. I would love to see a ranking of the Hammer Frankenstein series. The variety in that series should produce a lot of fun debate.
When I was a kid, we finally got pay channels with uncensored modern movies. They would send subscribers magazines devoted to their monthly titles. Premieres, final showings and then they introduced a nostalgia channel. I would read those magazines for free to see what flicks had nudity and you know the game. Then I would see these flicks like "Frankenstein Created Woman" "Dracula Rises from the Grave" and the one I actually recorded on VHS off the station, "Brides of Dracula". Those flicks were all 20-30 years old by then. I never forgot them and man did I love them later on. Cheers.
Great show guys! Prince of Darkness is my favorite for the reasons Jamie mentioned. That was the movie that made me a horror fan. I saw it before Horror and it always stuck with me. That hand coming out of the coffin as the body was hung above just haunted me. Great. The music was also top notch. Terrance Fisher is my favorite director.
Nice to see I'm not the only one who ranks *_Prince of Darkness_* #1! The Original is a close 2nd. But this one has my favourite story, favourite actresses (Barbara Shelley and Suzan Farmer), favourite set designs, and favourite Lee performance.
Dracula (Horror of Dracula), I'm with Alo - favorite horror film ever!, Dracula, Prince of Darkness (classic Halloween season movie), Brides of Dracula (could be number two, stupendous), Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (first Hammer Film I ever saw) and Taste the Blood of Dracula - the rest you can throw in a blender but AD 1972 had the hottest broads
This was great and I can't wait for your Exhumed Fest rundown next week. It was nice to run into Chris there. On the Hammer Dracula subject - real quick "it could only happen in the 70s" story. It was 1978, I was 3rd grade (maybe 8). The elementary school staff decided to do something special to help get into the spooky spirit for Halloween. So they decided to show a horror movie in the lunchroom. So this being even pre-VHS they got a 16 mm film print (from where I have no idea?) of a Hammer Dracula movie (I think it was Taste the Blood or Satanic Rites)!. So, we kids watched as a it unfolded before our young impressionable eyes - very bloody and with nudity! I remember the adults freaking out and quickly distracting us to the playground. Again - only in the 70s!
I was amazed that both Jamie and Pete said they watched the entire series in a row and did not at least make one remark about how often a character is named Paul. Every time I hear that name in a Hammer Film, especially the Dracula series, I chuckle. I think Scars is the one that I was exposed to first as a kid and the violence scared the bejesus out of me. Not the best by any means, but for me the one I have the most sentimental value for.
@@chrisflood9205 /. That’s tremendous. But , you know what. These guys are so creative on SOT , I’m sure the likes of Chris ALO, Jamie. Pete , Dan and. Davys C / could create a stone cold classic with that story line. lol 👍💯
Frankly, when I was a younger man anything with Ingrid Pitt was a must watch, 45 years later I still have fantastic right handed grip strength. I grew up on hammer, they would be the Friday night late horror movie and whether it was Dracula, the Quatermass films, the Mummy, the Werewolf films, Oliver Reed was a standout, the Sherlock Holmes, the Devil rides out almost sent me to church...but not quite,Captain Kronos was epic and the off piste stuff was always worth watching, Plague of the Zombies was terrifying, The Gorgon schlocky as hell, but in a good way. No other film studio affected my formative years as much as Hammer, bless their hearts.

Pete- thanks for the time you guys put into prepping for these shows- we really do appreciate it! I hit the other guys up on Facebook o thank them- even though I am 60+ I always learn something from your presentations. Wondering if u ever bought the books dealin with Hammer movies? I have found some cool stuff on eBay and amazon, but on eBay some are only available in the UK and the shipping is quite high! Any way just wondering I u ever got into any of the books. Take care an hav. Great weekend
Thanks for the lovely FB messages RIch! If you haven't read English Gothic by Jonathan Rigby, I would say it's the definitive text on old school UK horror!
@@DavysFlicks You guys are all excellent. It just seems like Dan is rarely on. So I thought I'd put a spotlight on him. You guys are hopefully opening the eyes of younger horror fans to the classics and lesser known films with your knowledge and excitement for these titles. Thanks Davy! Cheers to you as well!
It's such a haunting and beautiful almost fairy tale-like movie my #1 and quite frankly, along with The Mummy my fave Hammer film that could be their best looking too. I think the studio peaked here, to be honest.
The pained look on Davy's face whenever anybody ranked "Brides" amongst their lowest four titles. 😂 My ranking couldn't be simpler. Just put the titles in chronological order.
Davey as Christopher Lee is more convincing as the real man was in many of these! He's a terrific member of the den. Alo and Davy? They need a show like UK connection. Funniest on the channel
The Hawthorn bush comes from that's what mythology says Jesus's crown of thorns was fashioned from. The original band for the party scene was non other than The Faces which would have been interesting.
Another Hammer "Dracula" film was Twins of Evil. No Christopher Lee but it has Cushing playing a religious fanatic fresh out of Salem. It's a fantastic movie with twins who posed for Playboy as "Dracula's" interest. I believe it is part of the Karstein Trilogy which featured the legendary Ingrid Pitt. (and of course Pete mentions it at the end of the video - I should have waited till it was over. LOL)
So Chris and Davey felt the same way about "The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires" but they reached different conclusions. I think that one of you is completely correct.
Well, Chris was on the money, it does have ALL those elements..but for Hammer have a dozen better Vampire films and the Shaw Brothers...347 better Kung Fu ones! ;) Add on an awful Dracula, Cushing barely in a cameo and...meh in the extreme for me my man! BUT...Chris has seen it with his audience..and that is a test too.
Satanic Rites and AD72 are grossly underrated. Underrated for ambition if not execution. There's a palpable sense of dread to a lot of Satanic Rites in particular.
A.D. 1972 has plenty of spooky atmosphere (within all its silliness with the terribly cast old youths), plus it has the creepiest Dracula of all the films and a terrific apartment fight scene with Van Helsing and Alucard. Satanic Rites is good and yet I somehow find it goofier than even A.D. 1972, it's just too many genres in one so at times feels almost like one of Brian Clemens' stories from The Avengers it's an odd one like that.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 Yeah, it's the police procedural aspect that adds that, I think. Defo the Avengers vibe but moreso The Professionals, his other smash hit.
1. The Brides of Dracula - a complete movie 2. Taste the Blood of Dracula - a Dracula film with some actual meaning? Dracula is weirdly the worst part 3. Dracula - it is fine, but not incredible IMO. 4. Scars of Dracula - fast paced fun, lots of stuff thrown in 5. Dracula Has Risen from the Grave - the scariest G-rated movie? 6. Dracula: Prince of Darkness - well done but hardly anything happens 7. The Satanic Rites of Dracula - the WTF aspect amounts to something 8. Dracula A.D. 1972 - pretty dull 9. The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires - oof
Interesting mixture with regard to Brides of Dracula. It is, even without 'Dracula', an excellent variant with a top-notch Peter Cushing performance. Scenes like Cushing having to deal with the vampire bite and the windmill finale are excellent; it is right up there. Good to see the love for all those films up until AD1972: the point where the franchise went down the shitter.
Yep, Those are the exact two moments I mentioned, curing himself and the finale...they stand as high as any moments in the franchise. Enjoy your weekend!
Having just watched the entire series (except 7 Golden, as I couldn't find that one), I'm glad to see others also appreciating Brides. Personally I'd rank it as my number one. An absolute gem of a movie, and the ending is superb. Just the visual of the windmill catching fire during the end credits is mesmerizing stuff. And Peter Cushing is just phenomenal.
can't remember the title but the scene that comes to mind first is when Dracula is standing on ice and it's breaking up. he's floating under the pieces as the end titles come up.
No, but Amicus were formed when Milton Subotsky was pissed his Frankenstein script was tossed aside by Hammer. He absolutely wanted to beat em, so there is a connection.
Please acept this comment with the good intentions in which it was made. I'm a fan. I respect and thank every contributor on this channel. Enough prelims - I will just say it: I have trouble understanding what the Scotsmen are saying. 🤔 I hate saying this. The two Scotmen are really among the most knowledgeable guests on this channel. (Yeah - When I struggle I can understand them.) Is there any way these guys could PLEASE try to speak more clearly for American ears? Look . . I should try harder, too. I get that. My Granddad was born in Scotland - I understood him fine. 😀 What all guests should keep in mind is that we the audience are not always glued to the screen. We are busy, too. We are doing things. Make it easier for us, please. Thank you. 🙂
My list... 8. Dracula Prince of Darkness 7. Dracula Has Risen From the Grave 6. Dracula AD 1972 5. Taste the Blood of Dracula 4. The Satanic Rites of Dracula 3. Brides of Dracula 2. Scars of Dracula 1. Dracula
Chris love you man but don't underastimate Stephanie Beacham she has way better body compared to most of the Hammer girls you must see her in The Nightcomers or Super Bitch.
I have always found DRACULA (1958) to be the most overrated Dracula film. It's a terrific vampire movie with a great climax, but it veers too far from Stoker's book to be the "definitive Dracula". Don't like Harker as a vampire hunter in broad daytime...don't like that supernatural staples have been ignored (it's a "common fallacy" that vampires change into other creatures?? Oh really??). Christopher Lee is too young here (he looks more appropriate in later films) and has no iconic dialogue, though Peter Cushing is the perfect Van Helsing. Music score is too loud, thunderous, bombastic. The pacing is very quick, but I don't think Dracula should be an action film or Western. Renfield is also non-existent. A good vampire film...just not the perfect Dracula. On the other hand, SCARS OF DRACULA is grossly overlooked and underrated. The main reason it's criticized is it came along too late, and feels like a retread. But if a person has never seen a Hammer Dracula before and just catches SCARS as a stand alone film, it delivers the goods. Christopher Lee has more screen time than any other Dracula feature...he is sadistic and evil throughout...and the movie has a gothic feel, its castle much more creepy than the cheerful one in HORROR OF DRACULA. Fans love to criticize the cheap looking prop bats -- well, at least SCARS has bats at all! No other Lee Dracula film has bats, which is a required element. 1) BRIDES OF DRACULA 2) SCARS OF DRACULA 3) DRACULA HAS RISEN 4) PRINCE OF DARKNESS 5) TASTE BLOOD DRACULA 6) HORROR OF DRACULA 7) DRACULA A.D. 1972 8) SATANIC RITES 9) LEGEND 7 Vampires
I watched this thinking I’d be seeing some informed people talking about films they knew a lot about. Some clearly did but I also saw people (Dan Brown) who barely knew who was in a film they were commenting on. I usually like your channel but this was embarrassing to watch. And (probably because I’m English) disagreed with all the American rankings (and the Scottish). I love these films and to watch people passing judgment on films they don’t have in depth knowledge of is irritating.
Well, as The Scottish, some context..Dan was a few mins late and we had to be done very fast so Chris could pfor a show he is at tonight. Dan didn't know we were so hurried and if he was flustered for a moment, that's why. Disagreement is no issue but I can promise you most of us know these up and down. I know my Miles Malleson from my Michael Ripper and my James Carreras from my James Bernard. Even yesterday on my channel I did a 20 min Captain Clegg review. I've watched Hammer since I was a kid and they were on BBC2 late at weekends. Again my own preference woulda been an extra half hour for some context (I would love to have talked about Messrs Fisher and Sangster a lot more) but...we had an hour, 9 films and 5 of us. I would say I'm happy with it under those circumstances! Dan I would go to bat for anytime, his performance on vids like our Bava ranking or Spiral Staircase was professorial! Best.
I've been watching these films for over 45 years, and I can guarantee you that everyone else has seen these many, many times. Chastising people for getting a couple actors crossed up on NINE films is quite nitpicking, don't you think? Do you think you remember every little detail, every single actor, director, etc. from film to film on 9 of them? I highly doubt it. Not sure what is so embarrassing about having to watch this. And, it's quite alright to not like the same films in the order that we do (not sure what 'the American ranking' has to do with anything)-if we all liked the same movies exactly the same way as everyone else, it would truly be a BORING world, don't you think?
Nice timing to do a Dracula ranking because today would have been Bela Lugosi's 140th Birthday.

@@chrisflood9205 /. That’s tremendous. But , you know what. These guys are so creative on SOT , I’m sure the likes of Chris ALO, Jamie. Pete , Dan and. Davys C / could create a stone cold classic with that story line. lol 👍💯

David Gallagher you do a great Christopher Lee impression mate !!
Thanks John, it was actually me under make up in those Lord Of The Rings movies! Chris really retired in the 90s!

Great show.
Keep banging them out.
Chris and Jamie telling Dan to stop rambling is one of my favorite SoT moments of all time. I actually applauded.
i love Jamie’s props
Great show guys. Frankenstein in the future maybe?🤞
Hopefully when we are a bit less pressed for time as I think the Draculas are a bit more formulaic wheras Frankenstein is WAY all over the place!
Love hammer
Yeah, there's a reason why on my channel I cover em so much. Formative AND wonderful!

I'm with the Scotsman when it comes to Brides. It's superb. 🤘
Scotsman approved!
Dan Brown is great on these. I wish he was on more episodes
Dan The Man will be on our Secret Satan this week AND we are due a Mark Of The Vampire/Dr Jekyll double header soon with him! :) Cheers!

You guys are all excellent. It just seems like Dan is rarely on. So I thought I'd put a spotlight on him. You guys are hopefully opening the eyes of younger horror fans to the classics and lesser known films with your knowledge and excitement for these titles. Thanks Davy! Cheers to you as well!
He reminds me of an academic I had for Film Studies
Dan has such a wealth of knowledge and for me is the Ken Golden (The Professor of Prog) of The Monster's Den. He should be a more regular guest.
Brides of Dracula is one of my favorites
It was always gonna be my #2. Love it to bits. Thanks for watching!
It's such a haunting and beautiful almost fairy tale-like movie my #1 and quite frankly, along with The Mummy my fave Hammer film that could be their best looking too. I think the studio peaked here, to be honest.
I was a Kid watching these in the 70's and Christopher Lee scared the living 💩out of me, He will always be Dracula to me
I have your movie posters behind me.

The pained look on Davy's face whenever anybody ranked "Brides" amongst their lowest four titles. 😂
My ranking couldn't be simpler. Just put the titles in chronological order.
I love Brides more than my actual Bride!
@@DavysFlicks Scandal in "The Monster's Den"!
@@creech54 Best show for it!
Jamie, the Tom Savini of The Monster's Den. And bless him for it.
Revisiting this Monster’s Den. Chris and I share damn near the very same taste. I too am a cinema trash gobbler.
Davey as Christopher Lee is more convincing as the real man was in many of these! He's a terrific member of the den. Alo and Davy? They need a show like UK connection. Funniest on the channel
I’m with Chris. I love Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires.
Hans, we normally agree my man! 😅
@@DavysFlickslol.
The Hawthorn bush comes from that's what mythology says Jesus's crown of thorns was fashioned from. The original band for the party scene was non other than The Faces which would have been interesting.
I'll be at iron maiden tonight! Hope to see you there
Another Hammer "Dracula" film was Twins of Evil.
LOL)
Yes, we said at the end we will swing back round to the non-Dracula vampire ones! :)
Pete can you post everyone’s lists in the comments. Thanks
Which film was Dan's number one again?
The first Dracula, aka Horror of Dracula
@@seaoftranquilityprog Excellent thank you.
Yeah, as I said, Satanic is nihilistic in tone. Dracula is DONE with the world. Scorched Earth. Thanks for watchin!
1. The Brides of Dracula - a complete movie
2. Taste the Blood of Dracula - a Dracula film with some actual meaning? Dracula is weirdly the worst part
3. Dracula - it is fine, but not incredible IMO.
4. Scars of Dracula - fast paced fun, lots of stuff thrown in
5. Dracula Has Risen from the Grave - the scariest G-rated movie?
6. Dracula: Prince of Darkness - well done but hardly anything happens
7. The Satanic Rites of Dracula - the WTF aspect amounts to something
8. Dracula A.D. 1972 - pretty dull
Prince Of Darkness!
@@DavysFlicks thnx, Davy 🤝
Christopher Lee was a legend! I thought he was my favorite as Dracula, him and Bela Lugosi.
Lugosi only had two official entries and one was Abbott And Costello so..I have to be team Chris! Thanks for tuning in!
For The Panel, Does anyone know the difference between Hammer and Atticus were they the same?
They were not, competing film companies, though they shared many of the same actors and occasionally the same lots.
@@sotdude7 Thanks Pete
1) BRIDES OF DRACULA
2) SCARS OF DRACULA
3) DRACULA HAS RISEN
4) PRINCE OF DARKNESS
5) TASTE BLOOD DRACULA
6) HORROR OF DRACULA
7) DRACULA A.D. 1972
8) SATANIC RITES
9) LEGEND 7 Vampires
I agree with your take on Scars. It's far better than its reputation. Think you are a bit harsh on Dracula 1958 though.
Cheers.
Frank lanjela is by far the best dark scary Gary oldman not good he looks like a transvestite not scary
Dracula prince of darkness is my favorite.
It has such good eerie atmosphere, I love it...that creepy drape painting on the wall... 😱
@@LarryFleetwood8675 l like it because Dracula, like dead people in general, doesn't talk. It's more believable if that makes a little sense
Yep, *_Prince of Darkness_* is my fave Hammer Dracula too. There's *a few commenters* here who agree.
