Within events of the first game, Alice Liddell, believing herself responsible for a fire that consumed her home and her family, escapes into a twisted version of Wonderland. While held at Rutledge Asylum for treatment, Alice was able to conquer her doubts, and eventually was released from the ward. Madness Returns takes place in 1875, a year after Alice's release. Alice, now 19 years old,[6] resides at an orphanage in Victorian London, under the care of Dr. Angus Bumby, a psychiatrist who uses hypnosis to help his child patients forget their memories. Though she believes that she is fine, Alice still suffers from hallucinations of Wonderland.

Now that I think of it... This game reminds me of sucker punch.. how insane people try to escape through their imaginations... and throught it. It set them free.
Each part of Wonderland represents Alice's view of London. The first stage represents Alice's denial of the truth, the hatter's domain represents Bumby's destruction of her childhood, the ocean water with Mock Turtle, Capenter and Walrus represents her obliviousness to what's around the doctor's institution (probably explains why she didn't noticed that it's impossible for her to breath underwater), the caterpillar domain represents the truth that is right in front of her but she keeps denying it, the Queensland represents the truth about her sister's unfortunate end (Note the organs, tongue and heart. Also the queen said 'You are not welcomed here stranger') and the dollhouse represents child abuse

Alice wakes up from visiting Wonderland at Doctor Bumby's prompting and wanders the street till she is found by Nurse Witless, but suddenly, Alice starts hallucinating about Witless turning into the Jabberwocky and is transported to Wonderland, while her mind is in Wonderland, her body escaped Witless and wandered around London till she fell into the dock, she then woke up and goes to find her old nanny, who is now working as a prostitute, when a debt collector knocks Alice out, her mind returns to Wonderland, while her body is carried out of the burning house by her nanny, she then wakes up and is taken to her family lawyer, but she hallucinates again and her mind returns to Wonderland, while her body ran around London and got arrested by police officers for causing a ruckus in the street, when she wakes up again, she is let out of jail, since she hasn't done any thing too illegal, but her mind goes to Wonderland once more, her hallucination is so deep that she finds herself no longer able to tell if she is in London or in Wonderland, while in London, Alice confronts and kills Bumby, in Wonderland, she kills the Dollmaker
This would make a great horror movie.

It's a really unique game that a master Developer has come up with. I do take issue with the ending scene however- Yeah the guy deserved to be punished for what he did. But that should have set Alice 100% free and reconciled the past within her mind. Being stuck in between reality and fantasy casts doubt if she really did knock that perv off in front of the train- Was that part of the mental illusion she was trapped in? Or was that action what pushed her off the edge?
This is where the ending for the first game really shines. She beat her demons in that game, and was rewarded with exiting the asylum. There should have been more of an 'exit' to the madness in this one. Just an opinion. I'm looking forward to the 3rd in the series that is coming in the future. This developer has a knack for some really high end mind numbing gaming.

the therapist mind fucked her up so it poisoned wonderland. her past was traumatic so the therapist helped her block it out the point of the game was to uncover what the fuck happened in real world and fix wonderland (it's been a while since i played the game it's fucking amazing)
