► FAQ
Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.
Gorgeous George!
Isn't he.
Glad you enjoyed the city of Ripon. It is a wonderful place on the River Skell.
Slo-mo of George slayed me! Beautiful footage! Thank you!
You’re welcome! G
brilliant slow mo of George shaking off the water after coming out of the water . made me laugh
He’s an amazing dog, even more so in slow mo! M
Love the way George carries his own water bowl lol
If only he carried his own water! M
Good to know you’re enjoying the walkie talkies. We’re looking forward to using ours after your recommendation
We’re honestly not sure how we did it without them! So useful! I’m sure you’ll feel the same! M
Great presentation with the IWA, very enjoyable
Glad you liked it! M
A double like for the George ball catching section (especially the slo-mo drying)
That was a lovely cruise on a lovely sunny day....nice part of the UK....stay safe...thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! M
George in total happiness !!!!
So nice. Your Propeller interview was fantastic !
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! M
We liked Boroughbridge also. We got a fabulous bone china full dinners service from the charity siop there for a couple of quid!
Sound like a good find!
How delightful the Rippon looks and the gentle flowing river, and at last for you no more weed! The town looked pretty as a picture, and I love the telling of the "corner callers" ( tv times axed as well) Guy
It’s a shame the horns have been (temporarily) silenced in the square itself. Hope they return soon! M
Magnificent George shots.
Hi Jo Michael, great video as always, some big locks on this trip ,good information by jo some of the trip had some nice sentry in please but a lovely river not see this river before ,thank you for the ride ,take care keep safe,.
Thanks for coming along for the ride! M
Hit in the face with a fuzzy what? Puppet? Ball of fuzz? A Tribble?
60ft boats do fit but you have to remove front and rear buttons and once in the lock you put the boat k to corner it’s tight I did the journey in 2010 and the water was low that year and made it more fun.
That’d be too tight for our tastes! We felt squeezed as it was! M
we had walkie talkies when we had our narrowboat! Admittedly we had used many years before when John was a ship's agent in S Africa but found them great for lock working. We left them on the boat when we sold her.
They’re a real help in the locks, I can’t believe we went without for so long! M
Best out-takes so far.
Just completed watching starting at video #1 and now I'm at video #309. It's an astonishing body of work - so much footage from so many canals. Beautiful countryside and lovely little towns and villages. You guys have covered more of the canal network than any of the other TH-cam channels I've watched. I'm glad you just started 'Minimal List: Maximal Velocity' which will keep me going until your next episode comes out.
Glad you enjoyed catching up! We’ve enjoyed seeing it all, though we’ve been cruising like mad the last few days to get ahead of an upcoming lock repair stoppage, so Jo’s trying to catch up on editing the next episode as I type this! More coming soon! M
The Narrowboat community must be the last people in the UK to observe the social graces. It's so nice to see people helping each other at the locks. I'm disabled and I have to use a mobility scooter and the rudeness of the pedestrians are just unbelievably bad. I wish I could dry off like George.
Lovely cruise down the River Ure it's so nice to share it with you. Thanks, Guys.
I don’t think we in the narrowboat community are always that graceful, but there’s at least a certain amount of friendliness, which is refreshing! M
Was talking to friends who used to live in Doncaster last night but have moved. Told them I followed you and you were up there. They were interested. Enjoy and stay safe. I’ve not been there it looks very pretty. 💗💙🙋♀️
It’s all quite pretty up here, with just little spots of not quite as pretty! Well worth the visit! M
Astonishing just how eager George is for that ball going into the water! Great update! Ta!
He’s got a remarkably narrow focus when there’s something round about! M
I'm so glad you enjoyed Ripon... Thanks for reminding me of my favourite places!
It’s really nice, though I do wish we’d seen the horn blowing... so many reasons to regret the pandemic! M
I used to live in Ripon and don't remember the canal at all. A lovely canal.
It’s a bit off to one side and kind of easy to miss, but well worth the visit! M
A lovely and relaxing cruise, followed by a George bonus! I was envying him plunging into the water, we should all be a bit more carefree, be more George! Stay safe you three
I constantly wish I was more like George! M
I painted that trip boat last year , looks good , the owner Simon is not just short of rope 😀
Heh. Good paint job! M
Loved the ride and watching George and his slo mo shake, thanks for sharing your cruise. Take care
That's one wet happy dog!
Beautiful photography, lovely canal! I especially like it when you show the streets of the nearby towns. They are very different from my home of Santa Monica, as you well know.
Heh, yeah, I know the streets of Santa Monica well enough to walk them with my eyes closed... they’re VERY different, though I do miss the more reliable weather! M
And like you guys said I watched your webinar a few days back. Very nice. Love your vlogs. Keep it up
Glad you liked it! And them! More coming! M
Newby Hall has some lovely gardens, and a little train that runs around them. Our little lad loves it. They also have a fantastic collection of Teddy bears, including the original Sooty x
Hah, i should have stopped by and braved Covid for the teddy bears! M
You two were great in the webinar! It was an excellent summary of your canal adventures so far, and gave a chance to know you both a little better.
(BTW Michael, for same reasons as you, I'm close to buzzing down my whiskers too.)
Glad you enjoyed the webinar! As for the whiskers, yeah it’s not a great reason, but it really helps the comfort with the mask on, and probably also the safety. Beards will go back into style when this thing is done! M
We also have radios that we forget to use. My husband has selective deafness and they would be very useful.
Once you get used to them they’re an enormous help in locks, especially! M
Ripon is so lovely...Great conversations at the end.... I had a wonderful time.... thanks River Ure is beautiful....
The whole area is lovely! M
And now we know the origin of the name Wakeman, every day's a school day 😄
Lovely video! We've spent a lot of time in Ripon. My mum and dad had a static caravan on a site by the Ure. Can't wait to do this trip in Birdsong.
You’ll love it, it’s great to visit Ripon by boat! M
Hello there, enjoyable veiwing n Very interesting good,
is this the futherist you can go north really enjoy following
Your journey on the 'Trent'& chesterfield canal stunning scenery
Thank you for sharing your videos, great for two OAPs
Take care see you soon
Technically the furthest you can go north on the connected waterways is Tewitfield Basin up on the end of the Lancaster Canal, though there’s certainly some people in Yorkshire who will dispute that anything in Lancashire rises above them! M
I’ve never spent any time in Ripon; only just passed through, but you’ve inspired me to visit. Maybe even on my own boat, once it’s built and I’ve fitted it out!
Definitely worth the visit, especially by boat! M
Excellent, Georgie shakes his body from top to his little bottom.....as I imagine his fun running and jumping into the canal chasing his ball... I would trade lifestyles sometimes.
Me too! M
It will have been a salmon rather than a pike. They love jumping around .
Another great vlog, Not sure the population of Ripon is. keep cruzzing, NZ kia-ora mai
Kia ora! M
Food for thought. Pike generally jump out of the water to avoid bigger pike.
Well, then, there was a HUGE pike down there. M
Not another new favourite canal Jo.
Gorgeous slow-mo of George drying off at the end! I'm constantly impressed by how professionally done your videos are. Audio, video, narration - all top notch! Only David might have an edge over you in the narration...
Well, David’s had more practice, and more time between videos! M
I'll bet everyone thinks it's water in that thermos! :)
It is!! M
Such a lovely vlog. You guys make me to smile. So does wedded bliss cause Micheal to have a “buzzing in your shorts”? And I have a dog that is ball obsessed like George. And I have a new town to visit on the Urhe. Looking forward to the next vlog.
If you can call a Motorola Walkie Talkie a form of wedded bliss. M
I was christened in Ripon Minister - did you sample Appleton's Pork Pies
Afraid we didn’t, due to the vegetarian (more pescatarian in Jo’s case) thing... they did look nice for a past life! M
The walkie talkies, or headsets are called “Marriage Savers” in the sailing world. 😉
Understandably... communication is key. M
Thanks for the vlogs. Watching Minimal List, from the beginning, has been one of my shelter-in-place hobbies -- true escapism for an Anglophile in Missouri. I just caught up! I'm looking forward to continuing adventures.
Glad to know we’ve give you something to do in all this! M
The unuch knomes are back doing the background vocals
Fantastico 😂😂😂👍
Slow motion George shaking will never get old. BTW, when does the channel "Travels with George" go live? 😉
Another BTW, I liked this video as soon as I saw Michael scratching the edge of his beard. I can so relate...
Oh the itchy, itchy face... I so prefer the longer beard, for just this reason! M
Funny I've used walkie talkies for years on board, cracks me up that you've had them and have just started to use them...
Well we actually just got them recently, we just kept forgetting to actually pull them out. M
Jo, you're so fickle! You cast the Chesterfield aside as your favourite canal in favour of the Pocklington and now its the Ripon lol. Ripon does look to be a lovely place though so you are forgiven.
I think we’re like parents, we’ve got to love all our canals! M
H guys! Looks like a great mooring and both of you look rested. Would it be a tight fit if you had 2 boats of same length within the locks as yours? I think the cill would be an issue then. Or does the length take into consideration as the measuring point of lock length? This is a beautiful trip both coming in and going out. Another great video.
The lock measurements you can find on for instance the CRT website are usually to the cill, with a little buffer for safety, so they represent the longest boat they can fit safely. Two boats side by side don’t affect the length, and usually works fine. M
Really enjoyed watching your trip to Ripon, we've done the trip a few times and loved it. This years trip was cancelled due to the pandemic but your timing is perfect and we got to watch it with you. :-)
Glad we could give you a trip by proxy! M
Are you going to try and get to the Driffield canal?
Sadly no, at least not via the Humber, Jo’s orders and a sensible safety override... we’re trying to figure out a plan for after we’ve finished the connected system whereby we go visit the disconnected parts. M
why the canal boats have a open front so when you tied of each other one can sit in the front and one at the back and do not need to speak to weach other :)
Hmm, well now we’ve got the walkies talkies we’ve ruined that use! M
Ripon is my home city
Nice place to call home! M
We have radios but don't bother with them most of the time, instead we have developed a system of hand signals
We started with the system of hand signals, and it worked for three years just fine. Then we got the radios! It’s so much better, when we get to the really noisy locks with terrible sight lines! M
Hi can I ask which is your river or canal you have enjoyed the most out of the yorkshire ones we don't see a lot of you tubers
Who travel this far north we have enjoyed this video and watching you travelling the yorkshire canal and river we were one of the boats moor in ripon basin when you were there stay safe and well we look forward to catching your next vlog
It’s hard to say which is our favorite, personally I really liked the Derwent and Pocklington, despite the weed and general difficulty of access, but the Ouse through York is interesting and the Ure to Ripon is absolutely gorgeous, and we really enjoyed Ripon itself. So I guess what I’d say is it depends on which aspect we’re talking about... Pocklington for adventure, York for history and a fine city from a very odd perspective, and up to Ripon for just plain enjoyable Yorkshire countryside! M
if you cant get a headset there then let me know... loads of suitable ones here I use for VHF and UHF sets. You would have had problems getting us out of Ripon.. looks far too nice
Thanks for that, ours uses a funny connector seemingly unique to Motorola’s Talkabout series, but I think I’ve found a source. And yes, definitely hard not to overstay in Ripon! M
Have you heard, about the bird....?
I spend time in Rippon CA! Poor Michael are you being chased by Harvey in your dreams or is it just me?
Man, I hope you mean the six foot rabbit, and not the Weinstein! M
Minimal List the rabbit a pookaha
Hummm🤔 did I see you puffing on a pipe??? (I thought I saw that in fast forward) if so what brand tobacco
Nope, sorry... will have to go back and see what the heck that was, because the only things I’ve smoked on in my life was two entirely ineffectual single puffs of weed, followed by agonized coughing and much tears. Sorry! M
officially... max length on ripon canal = 58 feet
Not according to the CRT!
What does 300211 mean?
Did I miss something whilst watching the video ? Where did the 300211 reference appear ?
That’d be one of my tattoos... it appears all the time. M
Ahh, so that one’s actually meant to be read like a word, right to left, and not as a number, since it’s basically meaningless to anyone but me... So it’s 112003, or 1/1/2003 ... a moment I needed to remember. M
UFO at 12:50. Flat Earthers will say ti's a bird.
If you want a handie with Bluetooth shout me, (I have a spare) just say what frequencies you need :-)) Gaz
Thanks for that, some think ours uses Bluetooth; I’ve found a source for the handsfree, just need to figure out how and where to get it shipped where we can pick it up! M
Minimal List joys of boat life..:-) shout if you need anything.. gaz
"lets stop the video right ow"
